1. SUMMARY AND RECOMMENDATIONS
During the period September l through October 12, 1989, Homestake Mineral Development Company completed a program of geological mapping and lithogeochemical sampling over its 136 claim Saganaga Lake property, located 140 kilometres west of the city of Thunder Bay, in northwestern Ontario.
Detailed, 1:2000 scale geological mapping was completed over an 80 kilometre cut line grid established over a portion of the property. Reconnaissance 1:2000 and 1:10,000 scale geological mapping was completed over all other portions of the property, employing claim lines for control.
The mapping indicated that the majority of the property was underlain by a thick, mundane sequence of intercalated pillowed and massive intermediate (andesitic) and mafic (basaltic) flows. Minor occurrences of felsic metavolcanics, and interformational chemical and epiclastic sediments were also noted in places. This stratigraphy was extensively intruded by mafic (gabbroic) stocks, plugs, and sills. Lessor occurrences of ultramafic (pyroxenite to peridotite) intrusive rocks, and felsic (quartz feldspar porphyry) intrusive rocks were encountered during mapping.
Only two zones of potential economic interest were defined on the property during mapping. At one location, a thin pyritic chert- magnetite iron formation is exposed over 500 metres of strike length. Grab samples from this horizon returned assays as high as 4.81 gpt Au. Extensive sampling of the horizon indicated however that gold distribution was highly erratic, and for the most part uneconomic. At a second location, a large area of intense hydrothermal alteration within an ultramafic intrusive body had produced a "listwanitic" alteration assemblage of carbonate -f/- silica, fuchsite, pyrite. Despite extensive sampling, no economic gold values were returned, and only 2 of 75 samples returned even anomalous gold values. The economic potential of both zones is thought to be minimal, as is the potential of the entire property.

2. INTRODUCTION
2.1 SCOPE OF REPORT
This report serves to summarize the results of a geological mapping and lithogeochemical sampling program carried out on the Saganaga Lake property by Homestake Mineral Development Company during the period September l to October 12, 1989.
2.2 LOCATION AND ACCESS
The Saganaga Lake property is located approximately 140 kilometres west of the city of Thunder Bay, in northwestern Ontario. The claims are situated in the Saganagons Lake area of the Thunder Bay Mining Division, on NTS Map Sheet 52B/07. Access to the property is via a network of logging roads extending south from Highway 11 at Kashebowie (see Figures l and 2).
2.3 PROPERTY DEFINITION
The Saganaga Lake property is comprised of 136 claims in two blocks; the southern block with 104 claims, and the northern block of 32 claims. Appendix l contains a table outlining the claims that comprise the property, and their current land status. Figures 3 and 4 outline the south and north claim blocks respectively.
2.4 REGIONAL GEOLOGY
The Saganaga Lake property is situated within the Wabigoon Sub- province of the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield. The Wabigoon is comprised predominantly of granitoid intrusive rocks, and volcano-sedimentary assemblages commonly referred to as "greenstone belts".
The Saganaga Lake property is underlain predominantly by intermediate to mafic metavolcanics, with minor intercalated felsic metavolcanics, and thin interformational oxide facies iron formation and related epiclastic metasediments. The stratigraphy is locally intruded by felsic dykes, and mafic to ultramafic stocks and plugs. These rocks lay in fault contact with granitoid intrusives immediately south of the property, and extensive

3.0 DETAILED TECHNICAL DATA
3.1 GEOLOGICAL MAPPING AND LITHOGEOCHEMICAL SAMPLING
i) METHODS EMPLOYED
SOUTHERN CLAIM BLOCK
As wets mentioned, ci ri eighty kilometre cut line grid was established over the southern portion of the Southern Claim Block, to facilitate detailed geological mapping over that portion of the property felt to hold the most potential for significant gold mineralization. That decision was based on an analysis of the airborne geophysical data (Mcivor, 1989), that identified several prominent structural features in this portion of the property. Figure 7 illustrates the location of the grid with respect to the property, and all pertinent map locations that are enclosed in the appendices.
A baseline trending 060 degrees was established across the center of the gridded area, from which cross lines at 100 metre intervals were extended for a distance of 500 metres northwest (330 degrees) and 500 to 1100 metres southeast (150 degrees), to the limits of an area withdrawn from staking along the shores of Saganaga Lake. Tie lines trending at 060 degrees were established at 5-fOO North, and 5400 South, to provide additional control of grid line locations. Stations were established at 25 metre intervals along all cut lines, and pickets erected with clearly labelled line and station co-ordinates.

This grid provided control for detailed 1:2000 scale geological mapping over this portion of the property. During mapping, all encountered outcrops were tied into the grid, and detailed notations as to lithology, structure, alteration, and mineralization recorded. This data appears on the enclosed Maps l to 4, in Appendix 2. Any significant zones of alteration, veining, or sulphide mineralization encountered during the detailed mapping were systematically sampled. All sample locations and descriptions also appear on the enclosed 1:2000 Geology and Rock Geochemistry Maps (l through 4) in Appendix 2, as do the gold analytical results. All gold analyses were completed by Min-En Laboratories in Vancouver, using a fire assay geochemical technique. Any samples returning values higher than 1.0 gpt Au were automatically re-assayed for gold using a fire assay and atomic absorption technique.
Map 5, in Appendix 3, summarizes the results of detailed 1:50 scale geological mapping and lithogeochemical sampling over a showing area illustrated in Figure 7. At this location, a small flagged line grid was established over the area to provide control during geological mapping. A north-south trending baseline was extended through the center of the area, for a distance of 500 metres. East-west trending cross lines were established at 50 metre intervals, extending 100 metres east of baseline, and 200 metres west of baseline. Stations were established on all flagged lines at 25 metre intervals.
After completion of all grid mapping over the southern claim block, reconnaissance scale 1:10,000 geological mapping was carried out over the remainder of the block, employing claim lines for control. A numeric legend, based on the results of the detailed mapping, was used in describing all encountered outcrops. This data appears plotted on the 1:10,000 geological compilation in Appendix 4. Again, all zones of potential economic interest were sampled. Sample locations and analytical results (gold) also appear plotted on the enclosed compilation in Appendix 4. Appendix 5 contains detailed descriptions of all samples collected during the reconnaissance phase mapping over the southern claim block.
Map 6, in Appendix 6, outlines the location of all claims that comprise the southern claim block, at a scale of 1:10,000.

NORTHERN CLAIM BLOCK
Reconnaissance scale, 1:2000 geological mapping was completed over the 32 claims that comprise the northern claim block, employing claim lines for control. The results of this mapping appear in Appendix 7, as Maps l through 3, at 1:2000, and 3n Appendix 8 as Map 5, a 1:10,000 scale geological compilation of the claim block. Appendix 8 also contains Map 6, a 1:10,000 outline, of the claims that comprise the northern block of the property.
i i) RESULTS AND INTERPRETATION
a) MAIN GRID, LINES O TO 5? EAST
The results of the geological mapping over the Main Grid portion of the property appear in Appendix 2, as maps:

Mapping in this portion of the property encountered predominantly intercalated mafic (basaltic) and intermediate (andesitic) metavolcanics, in a thick, mundane, east-west trending, vertically dipping stratigraphic package. The intermediate and mafic metavolcanics are predominantly pillowed, with tops indicators pointing north in all cases. More massive, and often coarser flows are intercalated with the pillowed flows, and useful in defining the stratigraphic orientation of the volcanic package.
Only very limited occurrences of felsic metavolcanics were noted in this portion of the property, predominantly as thin, often boudined and deformed quartz porphyritic rhyolitic flows to 2 to 3 metres within the basalts. In many instances, some of the felsic horizons may in fact be dykes, as they are extremely discontinuous, and nowhere in the area is there a significant felsic component to the stratigraphy.
Only very limited occurrences of interflow clastic and chemical exhalative horizons were noted in this portion of the property. Most notable is a thin l to 5 metre thick, pyritic chert -

magnetite iron formation, exposed over a strike length of 500 metres, between Lines 34-iOOE and 39 + OOE on Map 3. This horizon trends at 045 degrees, and dips at a shallow angle (40 degrees) to the southeast. Clearly crosscutting the overall stratigraphic trend in this portion of the property, the iron formation may be structurally introduced, or represent a d isconformity occurrence within the stratigraphic section. Associated with the chemical exhalative horizon are thin chloritic argillite beds.
The volcanic stratigraphy throughout this area has been extensively intruded. Numerous small plugs, stocks, and in some cases conformable appearing sills of gabbro are present throughout the Main Grid area, increasing in frequency to the southwest of the map area. These gabbros are characteristically hornblende porphyritic, and often strongly magnetic. In many places, it is difficult to distinguish between coarse mafic flows, also often porphyritic and magnetic, and truly intrusive gabbroic rocks. Only where intrusive textures or crosscutting relationships were observed is the gabbroic (Unit 5} term employed.
A prominent north-northwest to south-southeast trending ultramafic intrusive body crosscuts stratigraphy in the vicinity of Lines 13E to 14E on Map 2. This intrusive, ranging in thickness from 30 to 100 metres, is comprised predominantly of peridotite, though pyroxenitic appearing phases are present. The rocks are usually fresh, to only weakly serpentinized, and are characteristically very strongly magnetic.
Throughout the map area, thin, centimetre scale to l to 3 metre thick quartz-feldspar porphyry dykes cut the volcanic stratigraphy, usually at a consistent orientation of 110 to 125 degrees, dipping vertically to sub-vertically.
No major zones of intense structurally induced shearing and related hydrothermal alteration were noted in this portion of the property. The only horizon of any economic interest discovered during mapping was the previously described iron formation. Between Lines 37+OOE and 39+OOE, in the vicinity of Tie Line 5+00 South, several grab samples from the poorly exposed iron formation returned gold values as high as 4.81 grams per tonne, and consistently anomalous values in the 500 ppb to 4 gram per tonne range. Table l summarizes all significantly anomalous gold values O500 ppb) returned from the

mapping program on the property, including those from this iron formation. While the values are of interest, the horizon has been extensively sampled, and the majority of analytical results were poor, indicating an extremely sporadic gold distribution over a limited strike length and thin width.
h) NORTHWEST GRID AREA
Figure 7 illustrates the location of the Northwest Grid Area, a small flagged line grid established over a small showing discovered during reconnaissance scale geological mapping.
Map 5, in Appendix 3, is the 1:50 Detailed Geology and Rock Geochemistry coverage of the area.
At this location, a broad, 50 to 150 metre wide ultramafic intrusive body trends north-south through a sequence of pillowed mafjc metavolcanics. The ultramafic intrusive ranges from gabbro/pyroxenite to peridotite in composition, and exhibits varying intensities of hydrothermal alteration. For the most part, the body is strongly carbonatized, with in many places almost complete alteration to magnesite. Windows of less intense alteration occur as zones of serpentinization, and a chlorite- carbonate assemblage, and local pods of more intense alteration occur as irregular zones of silicification overprinting the carbonatization. Fuchsite is a common associated secondary mineral, in what constitutes a classic "listwanitic" alteration assemblage of the ultramafic intrusive. The alteration is restricted to the ultramafic intrusive, and bounding pillowed mafic metavolcanics are relatively fresh. Within the altered ultramafic are several podiform zones of disseminated pyrite mineralization, approaching 10 ?o in places. Several large (to 2 metres) quartz and guartz-rnagnesite veins trend at all orientations within the confines of the intrusive. The veins are usually extremely discontinuous and podiform.
The area was extensively sampled, with a total of 75 grab and chip channel samples taken from zones of mineralization, veining, and/or alteration. All sample locations and descriptions appear on the enclosed 1:50 map in Appendix 3. Only two of the 75 samples (28507, 28509) returned significantly anomalous gold values of ^00 ppb (5-35, 660 ppb Au respectively), both grabs from locally pyritic carbonatized gabbro (see Table 1). All other

analytical results were disappointing, indicating that there is little gold potential within the locally altered ultramafic intrusive body.
c) RECONNAISSANCE MAPPING, SOUTHERN CLAIM BLOCK
As mentioned, after completion of the detailed grid mapping over portions of the Southern Claim Block, reconnaissance scale 1:10,000 geological mapping was carried out over the remainder of the claim block, employing all north-south trending claim lines, and all roads and trails that provided ease of access through those areas not covered by the grids. The mapping was completed to evaluate the gold potential of the remainder of the property.
The results of that mapping, with all sample locations and gold analytical results, appears on the 1:10,000 scale Geological Compilation Map in Appendix 4. All sample descriptions appear in Appendix 5.
The mapping encountered a similar stratigraphy to that seen in the gridded areas, namely a sequence of predominantly intermediate and mafic, intercalated pillowed and massive metavolcanic flows. No zones of economic significance were encountered during this phase of the mapping program.
d) RECONNAISSANCE MAPPING, NORTHERN CLAIM BLOCK
Reconnaissance geological mapping was completed over the Northern Claim Block, at a scale of 1:2000, employing all north-south claim lines for control during traverses. Appendix 7 contains the results of that mapping as Maps l through 3, at 1:2000. Appendix 8 contains a 1:10,000 geological compilation of the Northern Claim Block. All sample locations, descriptions, and analytical results also appear plotted on the 1:2000 scale geological maps for the area.
The mapping encountered a sequence of northeast-southwest trending, vertically to sub-vertically dipping pillowed to massive mafic rnetavolcanics throughout most of the claim block. Along the northern margin of the map area, granitoid rocks were encountered, and proximal to the granitoid - volcanic contact, the mafic metavolcanics became amphibolitized, to amphibole gneiss, and hornblende and hornblende-biotite schists. The

presence of this contact aureole indicates that the granite/volcanic contact is intrusive as opposed to fault controlled, as previously suggested by Harris (1968).
Intercalated within the mafic rnetavolcanics are numerous, often thick (to 10 to 15 metres) oxide facies (chert-magnetite) ironformation horizons.
Minor occurrences of gabbro and peridotite were also noted during mapping of the Northern Claim Block.
No zones of economic significance were encountered during the mapping program. Similarly, no anomalous gold values were returned from the limited sampling that took place during mapping. The economic potential of this portion of the property is felt to be negligible.
4. DISCUSSION; AN OVERVIEW OF THE DATA ACQUIRED TO DATE. AND THE ECONOMIC POTENTIAL OF THE PROPERTY
The results of the geological mapping program on the Saganaga Lake property defined, for the most part, a sequence of mundane, unaltered intermediate and mafic rnetavolcanics. Two zones of potential economic significance were encountered, an interformational iron formation that may have been structurally introduced into the stratigraphy, and a listwanitic alteration assemblage within a mafic-ultramafic intrusive body. Both zones returned anomalous gold values, though extensive sampling indicated that the size potential of the anomalous gold mineralization was severely restricted, and that the mineralization itself was highly sporadic. After a complete evaluation of these zones, neither is envisioned as having economic potential.
No other areas of significance were encountered on the property. No styles of alteration or mineralization similar to the Wye Resources "Powell Showing", immediately east of the property, were discovered during the mapping program. As such, it is felt that the property holds little potent.ial for significant gold mineralization, and no further work is recommended.
