StewardshipStewardship is a satisfying, rewarding and meaningful way to contribute to our community. A wide variety of stewardship opportunities are available:
mahon park stewards

Streamkeepers work to protect and enhance the environmental health of creeks throughout the North Shore. Streamkeepers are active in public education, information sharing, habitat restoration and enhancement, and environmental monitoring.
seymour salmonid society
The Seymour Salmonid Society runs the Seymour River Fish Hatchery and Education Centre.
volunteer opportunities
For volunteer opportunities, check the CNV and DNV websites for contact information and range of projects.
North Shore Native Ecology /FishThe North Shore, positioned between the coastal mountains and the waterfront edge of Burrard Inlet, provides a spectacular setting and a rich and varied natural environment.
fish bearing streams
The North Shore is fortunate to have some of the few remaining salmon bearing streams in Metro Vancouver. A number of North Shore creeks support populations of coho, chinook and pink salmon, cutthroat trout, steelhead and Dolly Varden char. Protect our riparian zones by staying out of sensitive creek, ponds, and river areas.
native plants
Planting native plants not only improves the biodiversity of our communities, but it is water-wise, preserves local heritage and helps maintain the natural character of North Vancouver.
invasive plants
Invasive plants, such as English Ivy, spread rapidly, choking out existing native plants. The main contributor to the spread of invasives is illegal dumping of garden waste, which has contributed to the reduced ecological health of many natural areas. See www.cnv.org for suggested alternate plants.
Park / Trail / Bike Etiquette

victoria park D7
Victoria Park was created as the fi rst and central component of a system of parks and boulevards promoted as North Vancouver’s ‘Necklace of Parks’. In 1905, area residents began clearing the forest and by 1910, formal pathways were laid out and lined with European species of trees; over 100 of these original trees remain today. In the eastern half of the park is the Cenotaph and Commemorative Flame.

This park is co-managed by the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and the District of North Vancouver. Whey-ah-Wichen is a Tsleil-Waututh word that means “faces the wind”.
deep cove / panorama park L6
Located in quaint Deep Cove Village, this waterfront park offers spectacular views of Indian Arm and the North Shore mountains; as well as beaches, playgrounds, picnic shelters, bbq’s, a water-front trail, swimming, kayak/canoe rentals, change rooms and washrooms.

Throughout the year, Waterfront Park is venue to a number of exciting special events and festivals, including the Wild Lights Summer Solstice Festival, the Annual Clam Chowder Cook-off and Boat Building Contest, Caribbean Festival, Canada Day Celebrations, Carol Ships Festival and numerous car shows.
waterfront corridors and views
Smaller waterfront parks and access points dot the North Vancouver shoreline, providing unique views of the downtown skyline, industrial waterfront, and mountain backdrop. Check out Lowry Lane, Kings Mills Walk, and Strathcona Park to name a few idyllic spots.
burrard dry dock C8
Standing as a tribute to the City of North Vancouver’s shipbuilding history and rich marine heritage, the shipyards and the Burrard Dry Dock pier, a 700-foot long pier and waterfront walk, offer spectacular 360-degree views of Vancouver’s skyline and the North Shore mountains.
boating
Small boat and kayak launching facilities are located at Cates Park/Whey-ah-Wichen and Deep Cove Park, where fees may apply. For more information and launching fees, contact dnv Parks at 604.990.3800. Lowry Park, Strathcona Park, Strathcona Wharf, Sunshine Wharf and Woodlands Wharf also provide opportunities to launch small boats.
Small boat moorage, maximum three hours, is available at Gold-sworthy Pier in Waterfront Park, and at the shipyard’s St. Roch Dock.
Playplaygrounds
Whether you’re age 6, 60, or somewhere in-between, you’ll have fun in North Vancouver’s 65 playgrounds. The most popular community playgrounds include Cates, Mosquito Creek, St. Andrews, Myrtle, Princess, and Parkgate Parks, to name a few. Many parks also offer picnic tables and seating.

skateboarding
Whether street style or bowl skating, there’s something for every interest and ability at Kirkstone, Seylynn, William Griffi n, Parkgate and City Skate parks.
multi-purpose courts, lacrosse and tennis
For the avid hockey, tennis, or lacrosse players, check out the map for locations to enjoy your sport. With over 40 hard-surfaced courts, there’s a wide variety to choose from.
bike parks
Working in partnership with user groups, bikers can enjoy the dirt bike parks at Inter River and Myrtle parks.
Park Heritagecarisbrooke D5
One of North Vancouver’s oldest parks, Carisbrooke was laid out in 1912-13 by the bc Electric Street Railway Company. A bandstand was built in 1913 with the fi rst band concert held on August 29, 1913.
cates park/whey-ah-wichen L9
When visiting the park, you’ll want to walk the shoreline trail known as the Malcolm Lowry Trail. Watch for the stone marker, which has been placed along the trail, and imagine the squatter’s shack on the beach where Lowry wrote many of his stories. For centuries, the Tsleil-Waututh Nation occupied these lands and are now active in co-managing the park.
crickmay park D6
Crickmay Park has been home to the North Vancouver Horticultural Hall, Japanese Tea House, Scout Hall and at one time was the termi-nus of the Lonsdale Streetcar. Today, Crickmay Park has a playground surrounded by lush gardens and mature trees.

pack it out
· Camping, smoking and open fi res are not permitted at any time.· Trash belongs in your pocket, not on the trail.
respect wildlife
· Remember, any park or greenbelt is a wildlife corridor. If you encounter a bear, remain calm and slowly back away. For more information on becoming ‘Bear Aware’, visit www.dnv.org, or contact the DNV Parks Department.
park / trail / bike safety and conduct
Several North Vancouver parks are in wilderness areas, be prepared and take responsibility for your safety.· Dress appropriate for the weather, with proper footwear, headgear, food, water, raingear, and a fi rst-aid kit. · Before you head out, make sure you leave your route and expected return time with a contact. · Learn the ‘Ten Essentials’ before heading out to wilderness areas: visit www.northshorerescue.com.
Dogs in ParksTo balance the interests of all park users, as well as the natural environment, it is important for dog owners to adopt an approach to managing their dog that respects both the park environment and other park users:
