What Does It Really Mean?• The term Ingress “Protection Class” generally indicates the type of protection of a device or the internal workings of a device against direct contact and against the infiltration of foreign bodies, such as objects, dust or water
IP Protection Designation Explained
A two-digit number established by the International Electro Technical Commission, is used to provide an Ingress Protection rating to a piece of electronic equipment or to an enclosure for electronic equipment.
The protection class after EN60529 are indicated by short symbols that consist of the two code letters IP and a code numeral for the amount of the protection.
Example: IP65 (NEMA 4)The two digits represent different forms of environmental influence: • The first digit represents protection against ingress of solid objects. • The second digit represents protection against ingress of liquids.
The larger the value of each digit, the greater the protection. As an example, a product rated IP54 would be better protected against environmental factors than another similar product rated as IP42.
Approval Types
APPROVAL TYPES
The most commonly used protection methods are IP and NEMA, whereas:
• IP Classification – addresses the European market
• NEMA Classification – addresses the American market
The European method of Ingress Protection is based upon IEC60529
and designates different IP levels:
Dust (first digit): 1 to 6
Water (second digit): 1 to 8
NEMA Definition
The North American Ingress Protection method is based upon NEMA
Standard 250. These standards are the basis for the North American for non- hazardous Enclosure Types: 1, 2, 3, 3R, 3S, 4,4X, 5, 6, 6P, 12, 12K and 13.
Hazardous area enclosures types will be marked as 7,8,9,10
whereas Type 7 and 10 enclosures are designed to contain an
internal explosion without causing an external hazard. Type 8
enclosures are designed to prevent combustion through the use of
oil-immersed equipment. Type 9 enclosures are designed to
prevent the ignition of combustible dust
IP Classification Definition
The IP (Ingress Protection) standard (IEC Publication 60529) is a classification of degrees of protection provided by the environment
for the electrical equipment.
The IEC designation consists of the letters IP followed by two numerals. The first characteristic numeral indicates the degree of
protection provided by the environment with respect to persons and
solid foreign objects entering the environment. The second
characteristic numeral indicates the degree of protection provided
by the environment with respect to the harmful ingress of water.
The following table summarizes the types of environment and a
general definition for these types.

IP Classifications Third Digit Definitions0 No Protection
1 Protects against impact of 0.225 joule(e.g. 150 g weight falling from 15 cm height).
2 Protects against impact of 0.375 joule(e.g. 250 g weight falling from 15 cm height).
3 Protects against impact of 0.5 joule(e.g. 250 g weight falling from 20 cm height).
4 Protects against impact of 2.0 joule(e.g. 500 g weight falling from 40 cm height).
5 Protects against impact of 6.0 joule(e.g. 1.5 kg weight falling from 40cm height).
6 Protects against impact of 20.0 joule(e.g. 5 kg weight falling from 40 cm height).
IP Third number - Protection against mechanical impacts (commonly omitted, the third number is not a part of IEC 60529)
