Beast from the East thwarts KYJO’s Headline Concert for 2018 ! It was with nervous anticipation that in the week leading up to the original concert
date of 3rd March your committee were studying every available weather
forecast for Kent and Folkestone. We liaised closely with the venue (Harvey
Grammar School) which itself was closed during Thursday and Friday. We were
also aware that a decision on whether the concert would go ahead or not had to
be made on Friday afternoon (2nd March) so that everyone involved (approx.
400 people) had time to get the message and make other plans if necessary.
When it snowed again in Kent on Friday afternoon and with no certainty that all
the snow and ice would disappear the following day we had to postpone the
concert. On Saturday evening (when the concert would have been played) there was a Yellow weather warning for icy roads
across Kent and still plenty of snow and slush on the side roads to make driving dangerous. It was not an easy decision to
make but we had to put the safety of the players, parents, guests and all the helpers at the school first.

will be staying in a Castle and joining with the German
Youth Jazz Orchestra in the Rhineland for a joint rehearsal

children from the German Orchestra will need to cross the
River Rhine in a boat to
reach us and then take
the boat home.
German Youth Jazz Orchestra
UPDATE - MARCH 2018
Peterskirche Church in Bacharach on the Rhine River
In 2008, not long after I had started attending rehearsals, KYJO were due to head off to Germany to play at a festival in Buhl. As I was the newbie who hadn't been given an official seat yet, I didn't think I would be going but little did I know Mike Taylor had been working his magic with my parents! I was very nervous about going as I still didn't really know anyone but as it turned out, I had an absolute blast! When we came back, I officially joined the band and played in KYJO for almost 7 years. It was then that I decided to go into music professionally and I haven't looked back since! You will have a great time in Germany and don't worry if you're nervous, you'll be fine! Leanne

Kent Youth Jazz Orchestra Committee News
KYJO held it’s Annual General Meeting on 20th February 2018. Attended by the Committee, some Full
Members and KYJO Supporters the Chairman and Treasurer updated everyone on the previous year’s
activities up to August 2017. The current Officers, Chairman, Treasurer and Secretary stay in their role
until 2020. Paul Gripper was re-elected on to the Committee for another year. The year to August 2017
had been a year of transition for KYJO but with many more players coming on board and a healthy gig
calendar ahead the prospects for KYJO look good with the Committee able to fulfil the main objectives of
KYJO i.e. to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in and appreciation of the art and
science of Big Band Jazz for youth musicians up to the age of 18, by the presentation of public big band
concerts, band workshops and any other events to promote its charitable purpose that the Committee
may from time to time decide. Ray Russell - Treasurer John Levett - Chairman Tom Lee - Secretary Paul Gripper
