Goodson Derek Nash Model Tenor Sax!
KYJO were delighted to run a Jazz Workshop
under the direction of Steve Waterman this
summer in Sevenoaks. Over 10 new players
participated in this educational outreach
programme by KYJO, bringing the ‘Big Band’
experience to young musicians across Sevenoaks
and beyond.
Tom Lee & John Oliver
KYJO Played a great set to the
public attending Sevenoaks
Summer Festival at Bligh’s
Meadow. Musical Director
Graham Mann and Assistant
Musical Director Mike Austin
showcased some KYJO classics
as well as some new material.
KYJO Patron Derek Nash loans his own bespoke Tenor Sax model to the band! The Tenor Sax was designed by Derek Nash and built by Steve Goodson Saxophones from New Orleans
KYJO invests in Brand New Trevor James Tenor Saxophone for the band!
KYJO were delighted when Derek Nash, KYJO Patron and
Saxophone player for the Jools Holland Big Band offered
to loan the orchestra his very own ‘Steve Goodson Derek
Nash Model Tenor Sax’. KYJO Chairman John Levett
collected the Rose Coloured Tenor Sax from Derek.
Allowing more young players to transition from their Alto
Sax to the Tenor Sax enables Graham and Mike to balance
the sound within the orchestra as well as progress young
musicians within the band. KYJO are very grateful to Derek
for this generous loan! To see a video of Derek
demonstrating this very saxophone click on the link here

KYJO Chairman John Levett and KYJO Treasurer
Ray Russell with the Derek Nash Tenor Sax
KYJO have invested in the future of the band by purchasing a brand new
Trevor James Tenor Saxophone. KYJO are very grateful to Trevor James
Saxophones for offering the Tenor Sax at a discounted rate for the
orchestra. Existing and new players will now have the opportunity to play
the Tenor Sax at rehearsals and also take the instruments home to practice.
“As patron of KYJO I’m delighted that
Steve Goodson Saxophones and I are able
to support the next generation of jazz
players by lending one of my Derek Nash
signature tenor saxes to KYJO - enjoy!”

Goodbye and Good Luck to our KYJO leavers Summer 2018 !
Great to see they will be carrying on with their music away from Kent …
This summer we said Goodbye and Good Luck to our KYJO Leavers - it’s always the nature
of Youth Bands to have a change over of players at this time of year. We are always sad
to say goodbye but welcome all KYJO Alumni Players to come back and join us at any of
our future gigs. We caught up with them over the summer to see where they are going …

KYJO Players
Your Musical Directors encourage you to
listen to jazz every month!
The first is just one track as we’re going to try to play it this year. It’s called ‘Tarova’ by
Snarky Puppy and it’s on the ‘Culcha Vulcha’ album. The players who were on the
Benenden course will know it.
The second is ‘Red’s Good Groove’ by Red Garland. Recorded in 1962 and featuring Red
Garland on piano, Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Pepper Adams on baritone saxophone, Sam
Jones on bass and the great Philly Joe Jones on drums, it still sounds really cool! The title
track is one of the new charts we’re playing in KYJO.
