A new recycling plant in Dewsbury has created apprenticeships for 100 unemployed young people.

Think3e, a not-for-profit social enterprise, worked together with Kirklees Council to set up the recycling plant at Calder Bank Mills in Scout Hill, Dewsbury.

All the trainees will have the benefit of a bespoke, fully funded apprenticeship with the opportunity of a permanent job.

Think3e - which takes its name from employment, education and environment - has invested £250,000 in the site. Earlier this year, the council approved a £100,000 grant from the Dewsbury Neighbourhood Fund towards equipment at the site and the first year’s rent.

Working closely with the council, Think3e is diverting waste from landfill and transforming it into raw materials and products for local manufacturing.

Think3e Managing Director, Marcus Baldry, said:

“We would like to thank all the local businesses for their support. It’s great to invest time and energy in 100 local young people. I’m fully confident that they will become the ambassadors of our business and green heroes of the future.”

A fabulous £12m Enterprise and Innovation Centre will enable businesses - in Kirklees and beyond - to benefit more than ever before from research and technical facilities at the University of Huddersfield. The new Enterprise and Innovation Centre in Firth Street will be an important part of the Waterfront development and is due to open for business next year.It will be based in the former premises of the university’s Business School which have been extended and totally transformed. The Business School has already moved to a new £17m centre nearby.

Another development at the university is the £8m Centre for Innovative Manufacture which will offer manufacturing firms the opportunity to have machine tools fitted with devices to ensure almost total accuracy. More than half the cost of the Enterprise and Innovation Centre was met by the European Regional Development Fund, through the regional development agency, Yorkshire Forward. The university provided £3.8m and Kirklees Council contributed £1.3m.

Hundreds of new jobs could be on their way to Kirklees after the prestigious Waterfront Quarter development in Huddersfield took another big step forward. Major site preparation and landscaping works have started, after Kirklees Council awarded a £2m contract to Clugston Construction to make three acres of land ready for commercial development from next year.

The land - which already has outline planning permission for four new buildings containing offices, shops, restaurants and bars - will be for sale to developers, creating several hundred new jobs.

Active for Life Callum was referred to Active for Life by his community psychiatric nurse and, despite doing very little exercise previously, he found that he enjoyed running on the treadmill at the gym.

His fitness improved, he lost weight and developed a more positive outlook.

Callum said: “I am healthier than I have been for a long time and I generally feel a lot better about myself. I realise just how much exercise affects my well-being and it’s part of my life now.”

Active for Life is run by Kirklees Council to help people with mental health issues to benefit from physical activity.

Making new friends at Kirklees concertsYou don’t need to understand classical music to enjoy the concerts at Dewsbury and Huddersfield Town Halls. Old favourites from childhood and popular tunes from the radio are part of the programme and it’s a great opportunity for a friendly get-together.

Here’s what some concert-goers have to say:

“There’s always someone to chat to and a lot of friendships are formed here.” Richard Beardsworth, of Bolton; Frank Hall, of Greenhead; and Colin Millington and Brian Hollingworth, both of Salendine Nook.

Enjoying the music: Andrew Mawdsley, Judith Butler, Malcolm J Bulcock, Kirklees Borough Organist Dr Gordon Stewart, Susan Wakefield and Tony Butler.“The tickets are good value and it’s nice to

come and have some lunch before the concert.”

Barbara Drake, of Liversedge, and Dorethea

Tarbatt, of Skelmanthorpe.

“We both came alone today and we met each other over lunch.” Ann Cornthwaite, of Heckmondwike, and Wendy Crookes, of Kirkburton.

New secondary school for Kirklees The first new secondary school in Kirklees for over 30 years is welcoming its first students at the start of the new term.

The North Huddersfield Trust School - on the site of the former Fartown High - is a secondary school for students across north Huddersfield.

Students and parents groups were closely involved in developing the new school including its name and uniform.

Executive Head Teacher, Dr Andy Williams, said: “We will be outstanding in the next five years and give this community the school it deserves.”

The Trust partners include Kirklees Council and a range of local businesses, community organisations and education providers.

If you would like to see the school in action, there is a drop-in session on Wednesday, September 14, between 9.15am and 12.15pm; and an open evening on Thursday, September 29, from 6pm.

The Mayor of Kirklees, Cllr Eric Firth, aims to raise over £100,000 for the Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice during his mayoral year.

Records show that many more children go to hospital with increased asthma symptoms in September than at any other time of year. This could be because some children forget to take their medication regularly in the summer holidays when they get fewer symptoms.

NHS Kirklees advises parents to make sure that, if their child has asthma, they take their medication regularly.

Curry Cuisine expands with help from the councilA Dewsbury business has expanded – generating income for the region and securing jobs – with help from an innovation voucher scheme run by Kirklees Council in partnership with the University of Huddersfield and Kirklees College.

Curry Cuisine makes award-winning Indian pickles and chutneys under the Chutnees Handmade brand. The owners, Prett and Paresh Tejura, aimed to develop new products for a major retailer. They also wanted to find a use for the gallons of beetroot juice wasted when they made beetroot chutney.

Prett and Paresh applied to take part in the innovation voucher scheme earlier this year. They were delighted when they were chosen to receive a voucher, along with eleven other local firms. With help from experts, they developed six brand new flavours for dessert sauces, all of which will be on sale soon. They also developed a new product to use up the beetroot juice.

Prett said: "The scheme helped our business develop a range of

products that we are selling to major retailers, independents and food service clients. It has directly helped generate income for the region as well as securing and creating jobs for the future.

“Without the support of the scheme, we, as a small business, would not have been able to allocate the resources to make the project a reality and, more importantly, to take it to market."

Do you run a local business that is looking for help with innovation? You can now apply for the second round of council innovation vouchers. Up to £5,000 is available. You should already have a project idea when you apply. The scheme is open to all businesses in Kirklees. www.kirklees.gov.uk/innovation

Safe parking outside schoolsOne of the most frequently reported safety concerns by parents is unsafe parking around schools. For example, zigzag road markings are no parking zones.

Kirklees Council is using a vehicle with a CCTV camera to enforce the parking laws around schools by recording evidence and issuing penalty charge notices. Any driver breaking the law will be fined.

Measles is a highly infectious disease and is spread through direct contact with an infected person or through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes.

MMR vaccine is the safest and most effective way of protecting children and young adults against what can be a very dangerous illness. Being vaccinated not only protects the individual but stops the virus from spreading in the community.

People are protected from the measles virus when they have been given two doses of MMR vaccine. The vaccine also protects against mumps and rubella.

It is never too late for children and young adults to be immunised with the MMR vaccine. Those who have not been vaccinated should contact their GP to arrange for vaccination.

Making new friends and learning about different cultures

The twinning of two council schools in Huddersfield is a great success. Pupils at Hade Edge Junior and Infant School in Holmfirth, and Mount Pleasant Junior, Infant and Nursery School in Lockwood, had a lot of fun learning and playing together. Each child was paired with a buddy from the other school and some new friendships began.

The first twinning event was a fun day at The Zone in Huddersfield where they played football and rugby, danced, and played together in the play zone. Harry, 8, of Hade Edge, said: “It was good to play together at The Zone.”

Pupils and staff from Mount Pleasant visited Hade Edge where they had a tour of the school, visited the chapel and walked through the woods at Holme Styes.

Sahdia, 8, of Mount Pleasant, said: “I enjoyed the long walk we went on - it was very muddy!”

“All the children and staff have become friends in a short time.

We are really excited about meeting up again in the future.”

Together • 16 www.kirklees.gov.uk

When pupils from Hade Edge visited the much larger school at Mount Pleasant, they also visited a mosque and started work on their joint project to make a 3D model of their perfect school. They showed their work to parents of both schools in a celebration event at Mount Pleasant in July.

Mrs Firbank, a teacher from Hade Edge, said: “The twinning project has been really good and given the children the opportunity to find out about other cultures and religions.”

Seasonal FluFollowing infection, flu has a usual incubation of one to three days with the appearance of fever chills, headache, muscle and joint pain and tiredness.

People with suspected flu should:• stay at home• rest• drink plenty of fluids, and• consider taking paracetamol or cold remedies

to lower their temperature and lessen symptoms.

People with serious medical conditions may need to contact their GP for further advice.

To try and prevent the spread of flu – ‘Catch it, Bin it, Kill it’ – cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, use tissues and then throw the tissues away in a bin and regularly wash your hands.

If you are in a clinical at risk group, e.g. have chronic heart disease, are diabetic, pregnant or are aged 65+ years it is important that you have your vaccination as soon as it is available to protect yourself from serious illness (usually provided in September). If you are in a risk group but have not received an appointment from your GP, contact your surgery.

Be meningitis awareMeningitis Awareness Week takes place between September 19 and 25 and everyone needs to be aware of the signs and symptoms.

Meningococcal infection commonly occurs as meningitis or septicaemia or a combination of both.

Early signs are – temperature, fatigue, vomiting, headache, neck stiffness, drowsiness and confusion.

With meningococcal septicaemia a rash may appear which does not disappear when gentle pressure is applied with a glass: this is known as the glass test.

The National Childhood Immunisation Programme aims to protect those under 25 years of age and those at increased risk from meningococcal C disease. In children under one year of age – the recommended ages for vaccination are three months of age and four months of age. A booster dose is recommended at 12 months of age for children. Contact your GP if you are unsure if your child is fully protected.

You can find out more by visiting the Meningitis Trust website at www.meningitis-trust.org

re-opening on Sunday, September 25, from 1pm to 8pm.You can sit and watch – or join in – sports, traditional

games, and performances.

Celebrate Greenhead Park!Greenhead Park officially re-opens this month after two years of extensive renovations. Thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Kirklees Council, this popular Huddersfield park has been restored to its Victorian splendour – and new attractions have been added.

Whether the park is full of childhood memories – or somewhere new for you – there is plenty to see and do. Why not bring your family and friends and try out some of the regular activities such as skating, bowls, nature clubs, or the weekly running and jogging clubs?

The park is just outside Huddersfield town centre.

New play areas have been created with modern play

equipment.

The ornamental lake, which was the centrepiece of the park when it opened in 1884, has been beautifully restored.

The jewel in the crown of the Italian garden is the original fountain which has been carefully restored.

The conservatory, which is the largest building in the park, has been fully re-glazed and is now an attractive restaurant serving locally-sourced seasonal fresh food.

Top award for Kirklees parksThree Kirklees parks have succeeded in gaining the prestigious Green Flag Award - and a fourth has just gained its seventh successive award.

The three parks are: Crow Nest Park in Dewsbury; Wilton Park in Batley; and Beaumont Park on the outskirts of Huddersfield. This makes a total of four Green Flag Awards within Kirklees - including Oakwell Hall Country Park, the one which gained its seventh successive award.

The Green Flag Award scheme is the benchmark national standard for parks and green spaces in the UK and is run by the Tidy Britain group. See www.keepbritaintidy.org/GreenFlagBeaumont Park has received the coveted award in the same year that its Heritage Lottery-funded bandstand was unveiled.

At Crow Nest Park, the award reflects the recent refurbishment and development of a number of facilities including the museum, refurbished greenhouse and the adventure playground.

The timing of the award could not be better for Wilton Park and Bagshaw Museum which celebrate their centenary year with a series of events funded by the Heritage Lottery.

Last but not least, Oakwell Hall Country Park achieved and maintained its high standards.

Latest news from the University of Huddersfield Would you like to be a student at the University of Huddersfield? Open days will be held on Saturday, September 17; Wednesday, October 26; and Thursday, October 27, from 9.30am to 3.30pm.

Book your place at www.hud.ac.uk/undergraduate/opendaysThe University of Huddersfield says: “We will be charging a fair fee of £7,950 – this is what it will cost to provide you with a world class degree programme. We are a debt-free university so all that fee is being spent on giving you the best education possible. If you choose to take a placement year – and we strongly recommend that you do - our charge is £500 for that year, and your loan will cover this too.

“The key thing to remember is you don’t have to pay us anything at all. You will only repay the cost of your education when you have left university and are earning more than £21,000 per year.”

To apply for your tuition fee loan you need to go to the Student Finance England website. Through them you can also apply for living cost support – in the form of maintenance grants and loans.

The uwniversity says: “You start to pay back your loan when you earn over £21,000 per year and the payment will be about £7.50 a month when you earn that amount – this will come out of your wages under the PAYE (pay as you earn) scheme, so it’s not like any other loan.

“If you already hold a degree, there will not be any government funding available for you although, if you did not complete your previous course, some funding may still be available. Please contact our Student Finance Office for further details.”

All this information was correct at time of publishing but everyone is waiting for the consultation on the government’s White Paper on Higher Education to be completed. If any of our information changes as a result of this, the University of Huddersfield website will be updated, so please check there for current information.

“Castle & Minster Credit Union is a lifesaver”, says Monisha, a single parent with two young children, who lives in Rawthorpe.Monisha said: “I’ve had a few loans with them now and they always reply quickly and are so helpful, friendly and professional. The money I borrowed helped to pay for my two children’s joint christening, Christmas gifts for my family and for essential, but expensive, household items such as appliances and furniture.

“The money has also helped to pay for a much needed holiday and my latest loan will help cover some of my moving costs as I’m moving house.” She continued: “I think the responsible lending ethos at Castle & Minster is great because I know I have to pay a proportion of the loan off, and commit to saving with them, before I can take out a new loan. This helps me to manage my finances and means I don’t borrow more than I can afford.”

DewsburyNew customer services centreA new customer service centre is being planned for Dewsbury.

You will be able to: pay council tax, Yorkshire Water bills and council rent; apply for housing and council tax benefit; discuss housing needs; and apply for a Kirklees Passport or a Blue Badge. A whole range of other services, advice and information will be available as well.

The new centre will be based in the Walsh Building, Town Hall Way. It will replace the current customer services at Dewsbury Town Hall with a modern, specially designed centre. The Town Hall will focus on its role as an events venue.

Council saves Pioneer House from derelictionKirklees Council has become the owner of a landmark Dewsbury building following its compulsory purchase.

Pioneer House has dominated Dewsbury’s skyline since 1878, when it was built for Dewsbury Pioneers’ Industrial Society. Over the years, it has changed ownership and been home to a wide variety of tenants.

The council’s first priority is to make the building safe and protect it from further decay.
