Our extremely high cycle stem sealing design is accomplishedby a double sealing system. The high performance of KTM ball valves is mainly due to the unique SealMaster™ stem sealarrangement, which provides primary sealing. It has beenspecially designed and constructed to prevent line fluidpermeation and resultant leakage. On top of this arrangementare multiple layers of V-ring stem packing, which act assecondary sealing. A set of Belleville washers automatically and constantly compresses the seals to adjust for wear,pressure and temperature fluctuations. Every KTM ball valve is a stalwart barrier against fugitive emissions.

The live-loaded SealMaster™ is a combination of threecomponents: (A) a cup and cone PFA/TFE upper tost seal; (B) a cup and cone sintered stainless steel 316 center load ring,and (C) a flat stainless steel/TFE lower tost seal. When tightened,the live loaded stem pulls up, compressing the stem tost seal. As this happens, material from upper and lower tost sealextrudes between stem and body enclosures (see Views 1-6).The surfaces between the bottom of the lower tost seal and topof the stem flange are smooth and all rotation occurs betweenthese two surfaces, leaving the stem tost seal “static” to createthe best possible seal. As rotation continues, components bed inand keep seal performance constant with usage. As operatingwear takes place, the stem tost seal can be re-tightened torecommended torques multiple times.

Choose from three soft seat materials:The standard E-seat PTFE/PFAcopolymer, PEEK and PTFE. Each typeof seat is retained in the same manner,with the valve body machined with aprotective lip designed to eliminate seatdeformation and cold flow. This samelip acts as a secondary back-up seal,which forms a metal-to-metal contact inthe event the primary soft seal isdestroyed in a fire. The E-seat offers process purity,strength, integrity, low permeability and high resiliency. It is composed of a unique molecularly enhancedcopolymer of PTFE and PFA. It offers a full range of properties formerlyrequiring two separate materials. The E-seat provides pressure and

temperature capabilities previouslyavailable only with glass or carbonfiber-reinforced PTFE. In high-temperature operations, the seatremains white, eliminating the risk ofcolor contamination associated withseats made from darker reinforcedmaterials. The E-seat is excellent on awide variety of applications but isparticularly recommended for use onstyrene and butadiene, where lowpermeability is a performance factor;and on low-pressure steam, whereflaking of virgin PTFE is a problem. It s also recommended for use on foodand beverage, pharmaceutical andbiotech, paper, clean gas and any otherapplications where product purity andthe lack of foreign fillers are critical tosuccess.

The photographs show a virgin PTFEseat after attack by reactive monomers(in this case, styrene). The material’smolecular matrix has been penetratedby uninhibited monomers due to vaporpressure, allowing a polymeric reactionto take place. Commonly called“popcorn polymerization,” this reactioncan totally destroy seat material.

In the second photograph, you can seethe results of a field test of the E-seatcopolymer by KTM. Using butadiene,

generally considered the worst-casescenario due to its small molecular size,the test ran for two years at 120 psi and180°F. The seats experienced minimumdistortion and, after the two-year period,did not leak in service. Pressure testsafter removal, at 1.1 times design, alsoshowed no seat leakage. The photoshows two of the seats tested and forcomparison, a new seat is shown in theforeground.

Suitable for atemperature range from -50°F to 932°F, the Metaltite metal seat is bi-directional andprovides a high performance solution to many difficult applications. Precision lappingof the ball-to-seat result in superior interfacing and a tight shut-off conforming to ANSIFCI 70-2 Class V and Class VI. Available with two different ball coatings: Hard chromeor Nickel alloy overlay. Durable stellited stainless seats are highly corrosion anderosion resistant. Proprietary Micro-space Design Helps Reduce Reactive Buildup.A frequent problem in processingproducts ranging from reactive monomers such as styrene andbutadiene to starches and slurries is that they can, and do, build up – andpolymerize or ferment – within the“cavities” or open spaces inside thevalves controlling the process.

Until now the response to this problemhas been to fill the cavities with PFA,FEP or another “foreign” material.

A more complete solution is KTM’s NoFill valve. As its name implies, theNoFill uses no filling material of anykind. Instead, the cavity has beencompletely eliminated – except for themicro-space required for ball movement(shown here in red). Depending uponthe valve size, that micro-space rangesfrom 0.5 to 1.0 millimeter. All wettedsurfaces are stainless steel, polished toa mirror finish.

This technology from KTM is superiorbecause:

• The micro-space is designed toseverely restrict the area where product can collect and build up over time.

• The mirror-finished interior helpsdrastically reduce the potential forbonding.

• There is no excess material to flake off with wear, helping reduce productcontamination.

• Solidification of media is much moremanageable, should a severeprocess change occur.

• The stainless steel interior lasts muchlonger, resulting in less down-time.This, plus easy maintenance,translates to a lower total cost ofownership.

Model EO3100 and EO3800 ball valvesare used for diverting or mixing fluids.The 2-seat design reduces torqueconsiderably when compared to 4-seatdesign with standard soft seats. Can bemade suitable for high and lowtemperature applications.

Model E3900 and E3200 ball valves areused for diverting or mixing fluids. The 4-seat design offers additional portarrangements. A greater Cv value isachieved in most sizes. Media trappedin the valve cavity is reducedsubstantially with additional seats.

KTM Pre-Vac Seal Ball Valves, 1/2" to 12"(full bore) are recommended for vacuumservices down to 20 microns. Whenordering, specify “Vacuum Service”. Both “T” and “G” seats are available forvacuum services.

When KTM ball valves are for highervacuum service, the valves must bethoroughly cleaned, more preciselymachined, and subjected to a leakagetest. For high vacuum applications,please contact your salesrepresentative.

Ball Valve Leakage AllowanceWhen KTM standard valves are used forvacuum service, 0.01 to 1.00 Lusec (1µ Hg/sec.) of body leakage will bedetected for sizes 1/2" to 12" (full bore).Major causes of leakage are penetrationthrough body casting of gas or steamfrom oil and water deposited oncomponents or contained in the casting.Seat leakage is negligible for actualservices.

Since KTM ball valves have inherentequal percentage flow characteristics,they are ideally suited for controlapplications over the widest possiblerange of flow. Equal percentage flowcharacteristics, in simple terms, meansthat a given percentage change in thevalve opening will produce the samepercentage change in flow.

General InformationComposed of a unique molecularlyenhanced copolymer of PTFE and PFA,KTM’s E-seat offers a full range ofproperties formerly requiring two separatematerials. The E-seat copolymer providespressure available only with glass fiberfilament or carbon-reinforced PTFE. Inhigh-temperature operations, the seatremains white, eliminating the risk of colorcontamination associated with seatsmade from darker reinforced materials.

Standard in all KTM floating-style ballvalves, the E-seat is excellent on a widevariety of applications but is particularlyrecommended for use on styrene andbutadiene, where low permeability is aperformance factor; and on low-pressuresteam, where flaking of virgin PTFE is aproblem. It is also recommended for useon food and beverage, pharmaceuticaland biotech, paper, clean gas and anyother applications where product purityand the lack of foreign fillers such as glass are critical to the user.

Properties and PerformanceFigure 1 compares the performance of theE-seat with seats made from virgin PTFEand 10-20% carbon-filled PTFE. Note thatthe E-seat has:

• A tensile strength greater than orcomparable to the other two.

• Greater compressive strength than the others.

• The least creep percentage of the threematerials, which gives it the leastdistortion that causes cold flow.

• Greater hardness (Shore Durometer)than virgin PTFE.

• The highest coefficient of linear thermalexpansion, translating into betterflexibility.

• A coefficient of wear significantly belowthat of virgin PTFE.

• A specific gravity and friction coefficientequal to that of virgin PTFE.

Figure 2 data show the E-seat to have superior characteristics throughout the fullrange of temperatures. Data was collected over a 24-hour period with a fixed pressureof 1991 psi. Because compressive creep is of such major importance in a valve seat, results from a wider range of temperatures are shown.

Operating Torque for Trunnion Mounted Ball Valves - EO1100, EO8100, EO1200 and EO8200 (Sizes 2" to 24")The enclosed valve torques are intended as a guide for the selection of the properactuator for us on KTM ball valves. The torques reflect net peak (no safety factor) atbreakaway. Normally, running is 25% less and seating is 10% less.

Procedure for Torque Selection1. From the Pressure/Temperature charts (Contact your sales representative),

determine which seat should be used.

2. Select valve torque Factor I, II, or III from the following table.

Note: Example Clean Liquid = Water or Oil (Lubricant Effect)

Example Solvent = Gasoline or Kerosene (Washing Effect)

Example:Service conditions = 10" line, handling natural gas at a maximum differential pressureof 800 psi, and a maximum temperature of 100°F. Customer desires full bore ballvalve, flange ends, 600 ANSI.

From Factor Chart above, Dry Gas has a torque of Factor II.

On Factor II Chart (page 78), locate 800 psi column under Differential Pressure.Proceed downward until 10" Full Bore (F.B.) row is intersected. Torque in this blockreads 17,200 in/lbs. This is net peak torque at breakaway.
