Site VisitsSeoul Station 7017 Project (Seoullo)

The Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to turn the total 938m of the deteriorated elevated road near Seoul Station from a road for cars to a path for people. The elevated road will be connected to 17 pedestrian roads, where over 390,000 people and 75 bus lines pass through every day.

The elevated road near Seoul Station was rated D in the safety assessment of the Precision Safety Diagnosis in 2006. Given its high historical value as a legacy of the industrial era in Korea, and a high future value as the starting and terminal point of the Eurasian Railway, the Seoul Metropolitan Government has decided to renew it instead of tearing it down. This will open a new chapter of ‘walking tourism’ in Seoul’s history by connecting areas popular with tourists, such as Myeong-dong and Namsan, as well as Seoul Station, through history, culture, and shopping.

Seoul N Tower

The N Seoul Tower, which is a symbol of Seoul now, was established at the highest point to glance the most beautiful images of Seoul. It is also Korea’s first general radio wave tower from 1969, delivering TV and radio broadcasting in the metropolitan area. Seoul Tower opened to the public on October 15, 1980 and has since become a major tourist attraction. The 236.7 meter tower sits atop Namsan Mountain (243m). The observatory offers panoramic views of Seoul and the surrounding areas. Thirty years and countless visitors later, the structure was renamed ‘N Seoul Tower.’ The letter ‘N’ stands for the tower’s ‘new’ look, which resulted from a 15 billion won remodeling project in December 2005. With a new lighting system and changes to the tower’s overall color scheme, event coordinators can now decorate the tower for the season or events.

TOPIS

Seoul TOPIS refers to the general transport control center responsible for operating and managing Seoul's overall traffic. TOPIS does this by collecting traffic information from the Bus Management System (BMS), the Transport Card System, the unmanned surveillance system and traffic-related authorities and institutions such as Seoul Traffic Broadcasting, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency and the Korea Expressway Corporation.

The system is designed to clear heavy traffic and avoid sudden traffic issues by collecting information on bus operations, the number of people using public transport, traffic density, traffic speeds, incidental situations such as traffic accidents and demonstrations, status of expressways, private traffic information and other information related to transportation, and establishing science-based public transit policies through analysis of this integrated traffic information.

Cheonggyecheon Museum and Cheonggyecheon

The Museum was established to commemorate the historic Cheonggyecheon restoration project. From the museum, visitors can learn about the history of Cheonggyecheon, and the Cheonggyecheon Restoration Project which proceeded for two years and three months from July 2003 until October 2005, the changing face of the city since then, and a long-term vision of Cheonggyecheon from the permanent exhibition.

Cheonggyecheon is an 11km long modern stream that runs through downtown Seoul. Created as part of an urban renewal project, Cheonggyecheon is a restoration of the stream that was once there before during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).The stream was covered with an elevated highway after the Korean War (1950-1953), as part of the country’s post-war economic development. Then in 2003, the elevated highway was removed to restore the stream to its present form today.

The stream passes under a total of 22 bridges before flowing into the Hangang River. Cheonggyecheon Stream passes close to Deoksugung Palace, Seoul Plaza, the Sejong Center, Insa-dong Street, Changdeokgung Palace, and Changgyeonggung Palace, allowing visitors to easily visit major tourist sites after a leisure stroll along the stream. Cheonggyecheon festival is being held every weekend between April and November.
