Volgens Leandri is Math Zone ’n opvoedkundige sagtewarereekswat volgens dieCAPSsillabus vanSuid-Afrika ontwikkel is.

THE Eastern Cape Department of Health hasstopped supplying private clinics and pharma-cies with free government vaccines, whichmeans parents will now either have to pay vastamounts to have their babies and children vac-cinated at these facilities, or make use of gov-ernment clinics where the vaccines are stillavailable to the public at no cost.

This decision was made by the departmentbecause they were “not comfortable with theidea that private clinics andpharmacieswerecharging a levy on vaccines that we are pro-viding to them free of charge,” said SizweKu-pelo, spokesperson of the EC Department ofHealth.“These vaccines are available at all public

health facilities at no cost,” Kupelo added.Dewald van Eck, owner and pharmacist at

Klinicare Lorraine, said they used to providethe free state stock vaccines and then onlycharged a levy.“Thiswasaservicewedeliveredtothepublic,

because government clinics are often so busyand people don’t want to stand in long queues,”Van Eck said.ButKupelo said thatwas “an unfortunate ex-

cuse”. “We are doing everything in our powerto improve our services. Currently we cover84% of the total population. If a person has aproblem with long queues at the governmentclinics, hecanpayforthevaccinesattheprivateclinic.”According to Van Eck, parents who opt to

make use of private clinics or pharmacies canexpect to pay the following fees for vaccina-

tions* (estimated costs):Babies6 weeks – R1 50010 weeks – R42014 weeks – R1 5009 months – R90018 months – R600Children6 years – R320Total = R5240

“Mostmedical aids do pay for these vaccines, but not all of them, so some parents will haveto pay cash,” Van Eck said.Could this mean that parents would choose

then not to have their children vaccinated? Not necessarily, believes Teresa Hayward,

registered private midwife in Port Elizabeth.“I don’t think people will not have their ba-

bies vaccinated, as parents want the best fortheir children and will either use medical aidor go to government clinics. This is a new prac-tice anyway. Private clinics did not always getfree vaccinations,” she said.As a health professional, Hayward said she

is very pro vaccinations. “Your baby does needthese injections as these diseases can reallyharm or kill it. Babies are most at risk in thefirst two years, therefore we recommend pro-tecting your baby as soon as possible. But thedecision remains that of the parent whether tovaccinate or not.”Kupelo in themeantime assured that all gov-

ernment clinics have enough stock available.)The EC Department of Health’s call centre

number is 080 003 2364.

IT is hard enough to land prime real estate in Hankeyduring one’s lifetime, but soon it will be even harderto find it for the deceased.

Hankey residents are facing a shortage of space forthem to rest, as the existing cemeteries could be outof room for new graves in as little as a year. This leaves the Kouga Municipality on a time

crunch to build a newcemetery for residents choosingto retire and be buried here.Municipal spokesperson, Mfundo Sobele, says:

“The municipality is under pressure. Although thereare a limited number of spaces left in the two cemete-ries to cater for the current scenario, they are runningout fast.“We still have some space left at the cemetery in

town, but the one in Centreton is running out of spacequickly.”According to Sobele, the municipality is in the pro-

cess to appoint a consultant to investigate suitableland for additional cemeteries across the whole of the

Kouga region.“We have already advertised the appointment of a

consultant, and the appointment will take place afterthe Bid Evaluation and the BidAdjudication Commit-tees have sat,” says Sobele. An amount of R500 000 has been set aside for this

project.Apart from limited space, cemeteries are unkempt

and dangerous.According to a resident, who wants to stay anony-

mous, these cemeteries have become a playground forcriminals. “Theyaremeant to be tranquil areaswhereloved ones are laid to rest, but instead all kinds of dan-ger lurk among the unkempt trees and overgrowngrass,” he says.“The lack of security sees cows grazing on the open

land, waste being dumped and headstones being van-dalised.”According to another resident she was brought to

tearsby the state of the cemetery in townas shevisitedthe grave of her late father, while another said shewas left distressed by the sight of the long grass grow-ing over gravestones.

PAY day has come and pay day has gone . . .still some 18 newly appointed EmergencyMedical Services (EMS) personnel have notseen a cent of their salary.

According to Democratic Alliance (DA)MP, Elza van Lingen, these ambulance driv-ers had to go home empty handed due to lo-gistical glitches in Bhisho.“The EMS employees are paid on the 15th

of each month, but alarmingly, newly ap-pointed employees in Kouga andKoukammahave not been paid as yet,” says Van Lingen.According to Van Lingen, the data of each

new employee could not be logged due to files

being lost. These files include letters of ap-pointment, Identity Documents and bank de-tails.“These employees of EMS are dedicated

drivers and members of a caring society. They haveworked for the entire April tryingto survive economically. How does one ex-plain to your family that you have a job, butthere isnomoneyand thedepartment cannotexplain why? It has been extremely difficultfor these employees to enquire why theywere not paid, for the fear of jeopardisingtheir jobs,” says Van Lingen.“The situationwill be closelymonitoredby

the DA to ensure that these employees arepaid as agreed and that their salaries arepaid on time.”

Hoe sal jy jou termyn as burgemeester beskryf?Uitdagend.

My gunsteling hengelplek is Kaap

St Francis.
