A man, thought to be involved in a burglarycase, was severely assaulted by communitymembers on Sunday, May 8.
According to police spokesperson Lt Ger-da Swart, members of the Humansdorp Po-lice Station received a complaint at approxi-mately 17:00 that KwaNomzama-residentswere assaulting a man. “Police members re-sponded immediately and the injured manwas admitted to hospital as no case had beenopened against him,” says Swart.
According to Swart, disgruntled commu-nity members, mainly foreigners, gatheredat the Humansdorp Police Station on Mon-day. “It was explained to them that, accord-ing to law, a case must be opened or a state-ment submitted before a person can be ar-rested on a specific charge. As no case wasopened against the victim, he is not in policecustody. The crowd then dispersed.”
According to Swart, a case of assault wasopened.

THIS is absolute nonsense. You never knowwhat you will get when you open the tap.Washing white clothes is a luxury - that is ifyou dare. I challenge AfriForum to come anddrink the water that comes from our taps.
These are only some of the comments madeby irate residents after reading the article Jef-freys Bay water is tops in the Kouga Expressof Thursday, May 5.
According to Jacky Opperman from Snow-drop Avenue in Wavecrest, the water comingfrom their taps is not fit for human consump-tion - unless holidaymakers are here, then thewater is clean.
“The water is brown in colour with uniden-tified hard bits and pieces and it smells. Noteven our dogs want to drink the water,” shesays. “We have no other choice than to buybottled water on a regular basis and to take
our washing to a laundromat at times. On av-erage we buy 30l of water a week. This is onlyto drink, to cook and to brush our teeth andwash our faces with.
“Buying bottled water for household neces-sities has become so expensive that some pen-sioners in the area have to fill containers withwater from the showers opposite Checkers inDa Gama Road.”
Doing washing is also a huge challenge. Ac-cording to residents once thewashing is in themachine, it is a gamble whether the clotheswill come out clean or dirtier than before.“You just never know when the water willgo.”
An elderly resident says that she washesher husband’s bowls trousers by hand in thebath - the same goes for all her other whiteand light in colour clothes.
According to Opperman, the water messesup their toilets and geysers and they need tobleach between the shower tiles to get rid of
the brown stains caused by the water.“Having visitors use the toilet is an embar-
rassment as it looks as though we did notflush the toilet,” she says.
Kouga Municipal spokesperson, Laura-Leigh Randall, previously said it is estimatedthat about R100 million will be needed for theupgrade and related infrastructure require-ments at the Jeffreys Bay Water TreatmentWorks supplying water to Wavecrest resi-dents.
“Basically, a whole new plant will have tobe built. More boreholes will have to bedrilled and connected to the plant. Anotherreservoir will also be needed. The pilot plantwas built in conjunction with the Departmentof Water and Sanitation and we are still work-ing with them to monitor how effective the pi-lot plant has been.
“It is unlikely that the department will beable to make funding available for a new plantin Jeffreys Bay in their next financial year.”

) Irill Humphrey van Niekerk: I beg to differ.Just last week I did my weekly washing.Among the washing was a white top of mine. . . I was horrified when I took the washingout of my machine. The top is no longer wear-able.
Also, when I put tap water into my cat’s wa-ter bowl, there is usually a sandy sedimentand the water is a yellowish colour.
Ekmoetdaagliksmywasgoedooren oor was met ’n bottel Jik daarby soos mywasgoed bruin gevlek is. Verduidelik dit asse-blief?
My ouers woon minder as 1km weg in LifeStyle . .

Almyklagtes oormynuwe tandehet opdoweore geval.
hom, maar toe ek my valstande ’n paar daelater wou gaan optel, prop hy die steeds stuk-kende tande in my hand en jaag my soos ’nsleg hond weg.

A young, local Stewardship Officer who cameup with a unique approach of looking at howattitudes and beliefs about hunting can beused as a basis for strategies to improve thesocial legitimacy of hunting, has been recog-nised with a prestigious, international thesisaward.
Dr Wentzel Coetzer (30), a former HananjaAcademy learner, was awarded the Interna-tional Council for Game and Wildlife Conser-vation’s (CIC) Young Opinion ResearchAward for 2016 at the CIC’s 63 General Assem-bly in Brussels, Belgium, on April 21 to 23.The award is aimed at supporting young sci-entists under the age of 35 whose researchprojects contribute to the sustainable use ofwildlife for thebenefit of naturalheritage con-servation.To qualify for the award, students of MastersorDoctoral programmeshad to submit a sum-mary of their research project, explaining theaim, methods and conclusions of the project.

“The quality of this year’s submissions wasoutstanding, but the judges felt that our workand the work of another applicant were supe-rior to the other submissions, and addressedthe three pillars of sustainable wildlife man-agement,” saysCICYoungOpinionVice-Pres-ident Denis Slobodyan about Coetzer’s thesisthat formed part of his doctorate at the De-partment of Agriculture and Game Manage-ment at the Nelson Mandela MetropolitanUniversity in 2015.Coetzer, who had worked at NMMU as a con-tract lecturer for five years, says he is ho-noured and overjoyed by this prestigiousaward. He is currently the Biodiversity StewardshipFacilitator for the Greater Kromme Steward-ship (GKS) initiative that is managed by Con-servation Outcomes. The GKS initiative wasestablished by the St Francis Kromme Trustunder the leadership of Maggie Langlands, along with a group of renewable energy deve-lopers. The initiative offers private landown-ers in the area the opportunity to play an im-portant role in the conservation of the re-
gion’s natural heritage.According to Coetzer, who grew up on a farmnear Thornhill, conservation formed part ofhis daily life from a very young age and is em-bedded in his DNA.“Having to decide what to study after matric, was a toss-up between mathematics and con-servation. When I heard that the only careerwith a degree in mathematics is that of a stat-istician, the choice was easy - conservation itwas. At that time, I had no ideawhat a statisti-cian is,” says Coetzer. What is this ambitious youngman’s plans forthe future? “Who knows. Maybe I will returnto the life of an academic, a great love ofmine,or stay out in the veld close to nature. Onlythe future will tell.”
) The CIC is a global non-profit inter-govern-mental organisation aiming to conserve wild-life through its sustainable use. The YoungOpinion working group of the CIC focuses oncreating a global network of young scientistsunder the age of 35, who believe in the valueswhich the CIC advocates.

LOCAL blood donors were honoured at aspecial donor awards ceremony held by theSouth African National Blood Service atMentors Country Estate on May 4.Pierre Barnard received the highestmile-stone for 250 blood donations. This is a life-long commitment considering that a personcan only donate blood every 56 days.Barnard’s fondest memory of blood dona-tion goes back many years when he was on-ly 19 years old. He went to donate blood atthe then Oxford Street Blood Donor Centrein East London. He saw a long queue of do-nors and decided to leave since he did notfeel like waiting that long to give blood. Ashe turned around to walk out, one of thenurses ran after him and literally beggedhim to donate, and she proceeded to push
him to the front of the queue. He was not sure what the fuss was about. It turned out that there was a baby that wasborn prematurely and required lots of groupA+blood andBarnard happened to have thatblood type. This was the turning point withregard to his commitment to blood donation. This incident laid the foundation of all thedonations that followed. Barnard made apromise to himself that he would continuegi-ving blood for as long as he could sinceit really does save lives. Knowing you canhelp someone is phenomenal and this kepthim committed throughout the years.Rev. A Veld and Forest Awareness Day and aspecial general meeting of the newly es-tablished Sarah Baartman West Fire Pro-tection Association (SBW FPA) are set totake place at the Humansdorp CountryClub at 14:00 on May 17.The day is hosted by the SarahBaartman
West FPA and the Kouga Municipality. The recently registered SBW FPA is
now accepting membership of all land-owners in the south western part of theSarah Baartman District Municipality. To attend are existing FPA members,
farmer associations and any rural privateand/ or state landowners who could be af-fected by wild fires and who would like tofind out more about the advantages of be-coming a member of the FPA.On sitewill be exhibitors of fire fighting
equipment, as well as a Working on Fireteam.
Background about the SBW FPAIn order to have current registered FireProtectionAssociationsbecomemore sus-tainable and financially viable organisa-tions, the major stakeholders in the areadecided during 2015 to amalgamate threeexisting FPA’s situated between Port Eliz-abeth and theWesternCape border. Thesewere the Thornhill FPA, the ZuuranysFPA and the Baviaans FPA. The newname for the amalgamated FPA’s, the Sar-ahBaartmanWest FPA, has nowbeen reg-istered and been approved by DAFF, andall rural landowners in the Kouga, Kou-kamma and Baviaans Municipalities areencouraged to become a members of theSBW FPA.“Due to the fact that the original FPA’s
in this part were not very active and effec-tive, several landowners from the EasternCape had decided to become members ofa very effective FPA in the Western Cape, namely the Southern Cape FPA,” saysMatt Marell.
“Their support has always been good, and we envisage that we will be able toprovide the same service from theEasternCape but when this is more beneficial toall, we have agreements with the South-ern Cape FPA to ensure that there is nodelay in providing assistance during aveld or forest fire.”The current area of the SarahBaartman
West FPA could possibly still increase ata later stage when other bordering, small-er FPA’s might want to join.
Advantages of becoming a member ofthe SBW FPA1. In the case of a fire where a member re-quires assistance, a Working on Fire Teamcould be sent to help at amuch reduced cost.2. If assistance is needed in making firebreaks or managing a controlled burn, help will be provided at a reduced cost.3. The SBW FPA will, on behalf of themembers, also ensure that all Parastatalcompanies and otherGovernmentDepart-ments are active and supportingmembersof the SBW FPA.4. The FPA will on the behalf of membersendeavour to get additional sponsorshipfor the running of the FPA, in order tokeep membership fees to the minimum.5. A representative of the SBW FPA willrepresent members at the Eastern CapeUmbrella FPA (ECU FPA).6. As a member of the ECU FPA the SBWFPA can also benefit from their negotia-tions for more funding from the relevantGovernment Departments.7. South African insurance companiesthat provide fire and liability insurances, also stipulate that one has to comply withthe National Veld and Forest Fire ACT101, before any compensation will be con-sidered.Formore information, contactMattMa-

hoofstrand in Jeffreysbaai die fluitjie geblaas.“My eerste volwaardige wedstryd as
skeidsregter wasnie, sou hy graag ’nprofessionele gholf-speler wou wees.
