ONE of Kouga’s premier beaches will receivea much needed facelift to the tune of thou-sands of Rands before the end of the year.
New walkways, ramps and dune crossoverswill make Main Beach in Jeffreys Bay moreaccessible to residents and visitors this De-cember - beach-lovers will no longer have toclimb and clamber to access this part of thebeach.
This is thanks to Joe Ferreira, a memberof the Dorp van Drome-initiative and ownerof Supertubes, who is spearheading the up-grade.
“The beach in front of Supertubes and Tam-pa Bay Spur is a firm favourite among fami-lies and children, but for the last six years ac-cess has been a problem and also potentiallydangerous,” says Ferreira. “Beach-goershave to climb over the dunes to get to thebeach, and in the process the natural dunevegetation has been destroyed. This is why Ihave decided to provide proper beach accessand also to rehabilitate the affected dunes.
Once the natural dune life has been restored, the cycle of sea live will also improve.”
Ferreira already constructed two look-outpoints - one of which is especially designedfor people with disabilities. The third look-out point will be constructed across TampaBay Spur before the December holidays.
“Each look-out point will also get a walk-way leading to the beach,” says Ferreira.
“Early next year all three look-out pointswill be connected with a walkway, with thelast walkway being extended up to KitchenWindows.”
He continues: “I will furthermore look athow we can successfully expand on theseprojects by trying to secure sufficient fundingto embark on a mini-environmental upgradeof this area. It is my dream to establish thesame vegetation here as that is at the Super-tubes Foundation”.
“Aslo in the pipeline is the paving of theparking area, as well as the construction ofa walkway connection Da Gama Road withthe main beach”.
For more information or to assist financial-ly, contact Ferreira at 082 576 9455.

AFTER six and a half years of endless meet-ings and discussions, theKougaMunicipalityhas finally given the green light for construc-tion on the first primary school in OceanView.
Nearly 500 underprivileged children fromthe area will in the near future be able to at-tend their very own primary school, situatedright on their doorstep. The new school building, that will be built
on the 3 hectare piece of ground opposite theroad to Marina Martinique, will be the newhome to 280 learners from King’s College inTokyo Sexwale as their current school build-ing has become too small to accommodate theincreasing number of learners.According to Astrid Vos from Victory4All
Projects, the driving force behind the plannedschool, the school will accommodate a maxi-mum of 500 learners from Grade R to Grade 7.“Only children from informal settlements
may apply to attend the school,” says Vos.According to Vos, the new school building
will resemble a castle. “The children mustfeel that they are royalties and deserve to livein a castle. They are the princesses and princ-es of our Lord,” says Vos.“As we are a non-profit organisation, funds
need to be raised for the building of theschool. We trust that soon enoughmoneywillcome in to commence the first phase of thebuilding plan, namely the ground work. Thiswill entail the levelling of the ground, settingup a fence around the perimeter and establisha sewerage system.“We are considering creating a borehole,
seeing that water is scarce in this area andwe need enough water to irrigate our sportsfields and flush the toilets.”According to Vos, the first phase will cost
approximately 1.4 million.“We hope to soon commence with the dig-
ging of the foundations, but that will dependon the available funds,” says Vos.According to her, phase two will comprise
the construction of the first eleven class-rooms at a cost of appr. R8.5 million.
Municipal spokesperson, Larua-Leigh Ran-dall, says the building of the school will nothave an effect on the construction of RDP-houses for residents.“Government housing projects will go
ahead as planned,” says Randall. “With bighousing projects, it is actually required thatland be set aside for facilities such as schoolsto cater for that community. The school plansare, therefore, in line with government’s vi-sion of building “human settlements” whereall community needs are catered for as op-posed to simply building houses without abroader support system.”According to Randall, various processes
first needed to be finalised. This included theupgrade of bulk services to the area, whichis in progress, as well as an EnvironmentalImpact Assessment.“Kouga has the highest population growth
rate in the Eastern Cape. The number of chil-dren aged 14 and under increased from 19 026in 1996 to 26 403 in 2011, according to Census2011. The municipality supports the buildingof the school, as provision needs to be madefor the growing number of children to haveaccess to quality schooling,” says Randall. To assist in funding the construction of the
building, contact Johan Vos at 082 821 4291 orsend an email to [email protected].
.King’s College, previously known asVictory4All Christian School, forms part ofVictory4All Projects.According toKing’sCollegeheadmasterSo-
ria Swart, since the school’s inception in 2008,this is the first year that they have their ownindividual name.“It is very important for me that the school
has its own identity with which learners canidentify and feel a sense of belonging,” saysSwart.Johan and Astrid Vos started the
‘Victory4All’ Projects in 2005 with only a fewchildren. This has grown into a Playschoolcalled Noah’s Ark, eight foster homes, a day-care centre for children with special needs(Rainbow, in Humansdorp), holiday andyouth programmes andKing’s College Prima-ry School.
The number of children grew fast and todaythey are able to reach out to over 500 children.Victory4All is as anNPO, totally dependent
on donations. They don’t receive financialhelp from the government. School fees are on-ly R70 per month per child. Astrid says: “Theprojects, and thus also King’s College, is run
on faith – it is a faith journey. Our wonderfuland very motivated teachers and other staffare not here because of the money, they arewith us on this journey because they love thechildren and want to give them a chance toa good future by offering them good, Chris-tian education.”

A car accident not only left business ownersin the dark, but also caused a sewage spill on-to the beach at the Boneyards surf break inKabeljauws - colouring the waves brown.
At approximately 09:00 on Sunday two bak-kies collided in front of the Spar Centre inDa Gama Road. The one bakkie overturnedand crashed into an electrical mini sub-sta-tion, causing a power failure in lowerWavecrest for most of the day.
The power failure caused the Beach Hotelsewage pump station to stop operating, which then resulted in a sewage spill at theCheckers car park. The flowof the sewage on-to the beach was clearly visible, and browncoloured waves could still be seen late Mon-day afternoon.
According to Kouga municipal spokesper-son, they have the situation under control.
“Temporarymeasures are in place. We aremaking use of a nearby transformer for elec-trical supply to the pump station which wasconnected and came back to use on the sameday. Our team conducted a clean-up of theplace asfar as sewerage is concerned and wewillmonitor the situation as time goes,” saysSobele.
Nearby business owners had to dig intotheir own profit to keep their businessesopen for the day.
According to Thinus Dekker from Vee’sVideo he had to spent close to R250 on gas forhis generator just to be able to trade for theday.
“I did not budget for this additional ex-penditure,” says Dekker.
According to police spokesperson W.O.Basil Seekoei, nobody was seriously injuredin the accident.
“Fines were issued to the drivers whodrove without valid driver’s licences.”

COVERING a distance of nearly100 000km, crossing over 25 coun-tries, obtaining 14 visas each, usingclose to 19 000 litres of diesel and
finding a midway between four languagessaw three diverse travelling couples unite inone of the smallest town’s in South Africa.
All by pure coincidence ... and the sharingof valuable information. If it is in Africa - North or South, or even
so small that it is not indicated on a map - theEberhards have been there to experience therich heritage and culture of the land and itspeople.Their vast knowledge, andagooddashof coincidence, recently led to the forming ofunbelievable friendships across countries -even though they only met and spoke to oneanother for the first time in Aston Bay.The beginning of September saw travellers
Paul and Maria Eberhard’s home in AstonBay turned into a cacophony of cultures, lan-guages, travelling vehicles - big and small -and stories. And it all began on the internet. After shar-
ing valuable advice and travelling tips withMarion andWalterHalscheidt fromGermanyand Stina and Turi Schimmel from Switzer-land, these two couples ended in the drivewayof the Eberhards after months of travellingand without knowing about one another.
Stina and Turi Schimmel
Before embarking on their 52 000km journeyfromSwitzerland toSouthAfrica inMarch2013- crossing 20 countries, acquiring 10 visas andusing 7 500 litres of diesel - the Schimmels con-tacted Paul on a traveller’s forum for advice onoff-loading a vehicle when crossing the ocean. They againmade contact when they were look-
FRIENDSHIPACROSSBORDERS
Travelling ‘family’meets inAstonBaying for a part for their truck when it broke inthe middle of the jungle in Cameroon. Not missing out on an opportunity to meet
fellow travellers, Paul invited them to comeover once they are in South Africa. And so,after travelling through Switzerland, France,Spain, Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, Mali,Burkina Faso, Bernini, Nigeria, Cameroon,Gabon, Republic of Congo, Democratic Re-public of Congo, Angola, Namibia, Zambiaand Botswana they arrived in South Africawhere they took Paul up on his kind-heartedoffer, resulting in a visitwhichmemorieswilllast a lifetime.According to Stina, they are used to travel-
ling short distance, but this time they decidedto embark on a twoyear journey exploringAf-rica and surrounding countries.“We only had two set-backs on our journey
so far,” says Stina. “Our truck broke in theheart of the Cameroon jungle, and we had toimport the broken truck from Switzerlandand had it delivered in Brazzaville in the Re-public of Congo - forcing us to back-track sev-eral hundreds of kilometres after the partwastemporarily fixed by the Chinese people fell-ing trees in the area.“The biggest set-back,however, was when
we were almost unable to obtain a visa to en-ter Angola - which would have forced us tocut our journey sort. The only alternativeroute is through the Congo where the roadsare so bad you can only travel a maximum of50km a day. After weeks of struggling and go-ing from the one embassy to another weman-aged to get the necessary visa.”Highlights of their journey include Mauri-
tania, Senegal where they spend threemonths to explore the country side, Mali andCameroon - countries they want to re-visit,Angola and the Richtersveld. A country theynever want to se foot in again, is Nouadhibuoin Mauritania.
“We did not once have to pay a bribe andwe did not encounter any crime. Overall, thepeople were very friendly and helpful,” saysStina.According to her the only item they stocked
upwith for their extended journey is toilet pa-per - you never know what can happen.“We did not bulk up on food supplies and
mainly ate fresh fruit and vegetables alongthe way, but items we never go without areour Italian coffee machine and a heater.”
Marion and Walter Halscheidt
Having travelled through North, South andCentral America before, Marion and WalterHalscheidt left their home in Germany 18months ago to explore Russia and Africa - amust on their bucket list.Neverdid it cross theirminds thatwhile tick-
ingoff anotherdestinationon this list, the shar-ing of information about transfer boxes andshipping would lead to the forming of a valua-ble friendship thousands of kilometres away.Aftermore than a year and ahalf on the road,
travelling 45 000km, using 11 250 litres of dieseland four visas, they took Paul up on his invita-tion to visit them once they are in the area.Leaving Germany, crossing Poland and
Ukraine their travelling dream almost cameto an abrupt hold at the Russian border.According to Marion, their truck exceeds
5 tons and they were thus not allowed to en-ter the country. “They strictly told us to goback. I was crying ... we paid a lot of moneyfor this trip and I thought our dream of trav-elling through Russia ended even before itstarted.“By some miracle and perseverance we
were able to obtain a visa at another bordergate a few kilometres further - but also notwithout difficulty as we already had a stampin our books from the first border crossing.”
Still their bad luck was not at an end.A few days after entering Russia, their
truck left the road on a rainy day and gotstuck in knee-deep mud for four days at a 20degree angle - making sleeping difficult andcooking and showering impossible.“We tried to free the truck with a winch, a
big truck and even a bulldozer but withoutany luck at all. The only thing that gave waywas the tree when it snapped during our res-cue mission on day one. On the fourth day atractor came to our aid and managed to pullus out of the mud,” says Marion.Only a few months later they got stuck
again, this time in a rice field in Thailand.Their vast explorations include a visit to
Lake Baikal in Russia (the deepest lake in theworld); UlanBator inMangolia (known for itsbad dirt roads, but friendly people); an expen-siveChinawhere theypaid avisit to theGreatWall; Laos where the people eat anythingfrom rats to grasshoppers; Thailand with itsdeafening music, temples and the worst traf-fic in the world; Kombodja to see the famoustemple Angkor Wat; Maylasia where theytook a ship to SouthAfrica and docked inDur-ban; as well as a close encounter with twosnakesmating under the ladder of their truckin the Gobi Dessert.“Although we had a few set backs, we did
not have one bad experience andmet wonder-ful people along the way,’ says Marion.According to Marion the thing they miss
the most when on such long trips away fromhome, is a washing machine. “We only haveone small cupboard each for clothing, so pack-ing must be kept to the minimum.“It is also sometimes difficult to be away
from your friends and families, but youmakea lot of new friends on the road.”They are now thinking of pointing their
trusty truck in the direction of Egypt or Israel,or even Turkey.

HELP MANAGETHE LOAD!
Geyser Management Project in Kouga Local MunicipalityFacts and Fiction

Why does Kouga Local Municipality support this project? The municipality must comply with national regulations that were implemented in 2012, which require municipalities to implement remote controltechnology controlling electrical loads, such as geysers. By means of this project, the Kouga Local Municipality will comply with the regulations. If peak demand can be reduced, the existing capacity of the electricity supply network will be used more efficiently - simply because consumerswould be using what is already available, without the need for additional power to be generated. This would make load shedding less likely - andif the load needs to be reduced (due to overloading on the national grid), it may be possible to avoid blackouts by only switching off the geysers.
How does this project work?
This is a load shift project, meaning that the load that would have been used at a certain time (in this case between 18:00 and 20:00 on weekdays)will be shifted to a different time (after 20:00) when there is less strain on the Eskom national grid. The project is based on a megawatt value thatwill be moved by switching off 6 200 geysers in the Kouga area.
Where will the geyser units be installed?Qualified technicians, with Kouga Local Municipality, Eskom and Escotek Enterprises identification cards will visit homes in Humansdorp,Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis to install the units. The following areas will be visited:
• Jeffreys Bay • Paradise Beach • Aston Bay • Kruisfontein • Humansdorp• St Francis Bay • Cape St Francis • Pellsrus • Ocean View
Should I switch off my geyser manually?
A request to the public to help make this project a success: if you do switch off your geyser manually in the morning and back on after returningfrom work in the afternoon, switch it on as soon as possible after arriving home to allow the geyser to heat the water for use between 18:00 and20:00. If you do switch it off again in the evening, allow some time after 20:00 to heat the replacement hot water.
What happens if Iam not at home during the day?
The technician will leave a not-at-home card with a Call Centre number so that you can phone us to install at a time when it is convenient to you.We usually do not install at night due to security reasons.
Who funds the project?
The project is funded by the National Electricity Regulator of South Africa (NERSA) through Eskom. The relays are paid for by NERSA throughEskom and are installed free of charge.
How long does installation take?
A typical installation takes 20-30 minutes.

Why is this project necessary?
South Africa is experiencing an ever-increasing demand for electricity during peak periods. This load management or geyser control project inKouga Local Municipality aims to move a substantial portion of the residential evening peak to later in the evening (after 20:00).
