• My magazine will be a helpful tool when coming to creaLng a styled dorm room
that is not only well put together but also has a sense of correct design concepts
and funcLon able pieces. When coming to choosing how you want your dorm to
look you could go over the top or too simple. My ideas and examples of design
elements and principles will help my readers to choose a design concept that will
fit their dorm space and create a place that feels home like but more mature than
their old room at home.
Dear Readers, My name is Julie Koter, like most of you I have lived with parents in a house for 18 years. But now all of sudden I’m entering college I am going to be living in a dorm room that is in a building with 10 floors that have two people living in each room. The building doesn't’t sound too home like to me, but I’m here to tell you that you can make it home like and appealing at the same Lme. When thinking of how you want your bed and room to be decorated think about what you like and what items on the walls will inspire you or make you happy to look at. Whether it be nature scenes, quotes or just pictures of things you like, it will all help make your dorm room styled to your liking. Now not only does my dorm room but your dorm will be styled or inspired but I want it to contain a design concept that has a combinaLon of design elements and design principles that will be the foundaLon to make your dorm room styled as well. My images will explain these elements and principles and hopefully give you some ideas. Sincerely, Julie Kotler
Curved Flowing Lines Curved or busy
lines can come on bed spreads, pillows, and
blankets which are all essen<als for a dorm room. The curved lines create a sense of “fun” to any dull room and can also brighten the room up with color and different paBerns.
Straight Vertical Lines
Straight lines can create openness within a small room such as a dorm room, pillows are great to use to add colors to a simple colored
bedspread in your dorm room.
Straight Horizontal Lines
Horizontal lines can widen a narrow room and in college dorm rooms can either been really wide or really narrow and crammed feeling. The horizontal lines on pillows, sheets or bedspreads will widen a room and
add decora<on as well.
Reflective Texture When the lights off of these dangling lamps comes on, they will reflect off different objects around the room
crea<ng a brighter feeling in a dorm room.
Non Reflective Rugs are a great non reflecLve material that adds so_ness and warmth to a non comforLng dorm room!
A floor rug or a few mini rugs can take up the negaLve space of your dorm floor and add color or just comfort to the enLre look of the room. Also buying an absorbent rug can be very useful in a dorm room for those easy spills!
Implied Texture Implied texture can add dimension and design to your dorm walls or flooring. Wall decals are more popular for dorm rooms such as flowers, posters, or nature scenes!
Task Lighting
Task lighLng is essenLal in the dorm room! On your desk you need a reading lamp that will focus where you need it to exactly on your desk while doing your homework. You can get a reading lamp or just a normal bedside lamp!
Natural Lighting Natural light can come from the windows in your dorm room. You can control the color and degree of the light by using blinds and color curtains to help dim the light or color the light. Using natural lighLng in your room will save electricity and also set a nice atmosphere for the dorm room!
Art Lighting Art lighLng can help decorate a boring dorm room.
Also it is a predy night light! It can be the perfect amount of light to sleep with on or just to hangout with on during the evening. It’s a type of lighLng
that is not only creaLve by the way you hang it up but also useful!
Monochromatic Color Scheme
A great way to freshen up a white dorm room is too add bold and bright colors to the furnishings or décor! The bright colors against the solid white background of a dorm room can really help liven up the room.
Neutral Palette A neutral color scheme consists of very light natural colors such as whites, browns, greens, yellows and blues. All those colors can appear natural and relaxing to the eye, creaLng a pleasant dorm room that won’t get old a_er a while!
Direct Complementary Colors Direct Complementary colors is the use of the colors that are exactly opposite from one another on the color wheel! Colors that are directly opposite from one another on the color wheel go together very smoothly!
Positive Space
The space filled in with two or three
dimensional forms or shapes. It is the objects that are taking up space such as a twin bed, bed side table, lamp, desk in
a dorm room.
Negative Space The area between the forms in a two or three dimensional design. The area between the beds, desk, lamp and walk way of the room are all examples of negaLve space!
Crowding Territoriality The term “Crowding Territoriality” means the area where people are grouped together in a restricted area. A dorm room is a perfect example of a restricted area, it is a living quarter designed for two people to live in that is not meant to allow acLviLes with more than those people occur!
Natural/Organic Shape The starfish designed on the pillow creates natural lines outlining an animal!
Another example is this elephant pillow from bed bath and beyond that also is outlined to create a natural shape of an elephant!
Geometric Shape Geometric shapes can be seen in the outline of picture frames!
Geometric shapes also come with most dorm rooms because the dorms are older and the walls tend to be made up of small square Lles!
Abstract Shape Within a dorm room the furniture usually comes from the school is not abstract but ways to incorporate abstract pieces within your dorm room would be to pick color full and abstract posters to hang along the walls of the dorm! For example the owl is a real life animal made up of different shapes and paderns making it an abstract owl!
Natural Form Electronic candles can appear natural and realisLc looking. Adding these candles to your dorm room is not only décor and light but also adds accents to the room!
A bean bag chair is convenient to have to hangout in a_er a long day at school and helps keep the room from looking plain since it changes shape whenever touched!
Geometric Form Within this dorm room geometric forms are throughout the enLre area!

Abstract Form Common abstract forms within a dorm room is monogramed wall pieces along the wall or above the beds! Also individual homemade leders are used to put around a dorm room and usually have an abstract padern on it as well!
Visual Asymmetry The dorm bedrooms have the same furniture and windows but the room is asymmetrical because someLmes the furniture layout is not directly symmetrical along the axis line. However since the room has same amount of furniture and idenLcal furniture the balance in weight is exactly the same.
Visual Symmetry Visual symmetry can be seen in this twin bed room. Each bed, bedding, pillows and pictures above the bed are idenLcal to the other. The night stand in the middle of the beds adds a different kind of balance and line of symmetry to the room.
Structural Symmetry These two beds create the structural symmetry within the dorm room on either side of the room. The line of symmetry is down the center line of the middle window and next to each end of the desk.
Unity Through Shape Pictures and posters are common in dorm rooms for décor. They are usually a rectangular, square or circular shape placed all together on a wall. In this dorm room the rectangular and square posters create a unity of shapes.
Repetition through color
Within this dorm room maroon in the main color on the bedding, pillows and also seems to come out in some of the photos along the wall. This repeLLon of the color maroon creates unity within the room.
Unity Through Color This room is based off the color blue with different shades or hues of blue to make the room unified by color! Any room can become unified if designed with one color and has different hues or shades of the color for the décor or furnishings.
Focal Point: Structural The structural focal point within this dorm room is the center dresser piece. It is directly between the beds! Even from the angle of this picture your eye automaLcally goes to center of the beds. This focal point adds emphasis even to small confined dorm room!
Focal Point: Visual
A visual focal point is created by having an object or a group of objects be the main focus of the room. Within a dorm room there is typically two idenLcal sides of the room therefore on this side of the dorm room, the visual focal point is the objects along the wall! The objects open up the space and are always a great way to add cute décor to a boring white wall!
Repetition The paderns found on the beddings, carpet and pillows all add repeLLon to the room. While the blues, whites, and oranges all add a repeLLve rhythm to the whole dorm room!
Transitional Rhythm All dorm rooms have the basic furniture such as beds, desks, dressers and chairs. When you first enter any dorm room whether it is plain or decorated your eye transiLons from the main furniture pieces easily since it is in such small dimensions.
Contrasting Rhythm
The furniture pieces within this dorm room vary from the curved headboards to the squared off desk and the round desk chair. All of these shapes are opposing to one another creaLng a contrasLng rhythm within the room!
Proportional Space ProporLonal space is the relaLonship of size between and object and its parts!
Within this dorm room shown the furniture is proporLonal to one another and the posters are unified on the wall creaLng a proporLonal whole of space taken on the wall in contrast to the furniture. Nothing in parLcular is taking over the room!
Un- Proportional Space The chair in relaLonship to the desk is un-‐proporLonal and the TV on top of the fridge is as well! The chair and TV are a lidle larger than the pieces they are being paired with making them seem over powering to the proporLon of the room.
Human Scale Human scale is used to figure out the accessibility for the average person. Within a dorm room the furniture can be moved and arranged to fit different types of people. The beds are all twin XL to be accessible to tall teenagers!
Symbolic Scale Symbolic scale is when items are fit to the piece of furniture they are within or simng on. For example the dorm desk isn't very large therefore students have to place office items that will fit Lghtly together and sLll leave enough room for a lap top!
Optical Density OpLcal density is when a piece of furniture has an empty area instead of a solid area or volume! Within this picture you can see that there is a book shelf underneath the bed that takes up a lot of space but also leaves open space inside to store items!
Actual Density
This futon is a perfect example of actual density. The futon is solid with no openings or “empty areas” meaning it is a solid volume!
