On the following page I have written an article regarding learning and the way in which we teach Mathematics at KSPS. I know that I talk a lot about future proofing our school and the facilities, but we must also future proof our kids learning. I strongly believe that as both parents and educators that we need to work together to offer children variety of experiences, styles and opportunities to learn, transfer and reflect their knowledge across a variety of situations. Please take the time to read the attached article. The upcoming Parent / Teacher interviews for years 1-6 is the perfect opportunity to discuss these concepts with your child’s classroom teacher. Parent/Teacher Interviews is an online booking system for parents. It is now live and ready for you to book a time with your child’s class teacher. Your child’s report cards will be handed out and discussed at the interview. Those parents who are unable to attend an interview will receive their child’s report home on the last Thursday of term (29 June). Please go to: www.schoolinterviews.com.au and use the code: qpcsj and that will find the Kotara South page. A note was sent home last Friday with this information as well. Our year 5 and 6 debating teams are at their next rounds of debating in the upcoming fortnight. The teams are training hard with both Miss Martin and Ms Payne. We wish both teams the best of luck in the next rounds. KSPS will be hosting a Star Struck SHINE ON mufti day this Thursday 8 June. The theme is something sparkly, shiny, glittery and bright- to fit with the SHINE ON theme. A gold coin donation is appreciated. This will assist with the costs associated with Star Struck. Both Ms Gibson and Miss Martin have been regularly practicing with their groups and the big day(s) is next Friday 16 June and Saturday 17 June. It certainly is a #proudprincipal moment for me seeing our children shine in amongst 3500 of their peers. GO KSPS! Mrs Ward has included information in this week’s newsletter on the Sport Knockouts and PSSA teams. Our children are certainly achieving terrific results on the sporting field. Please see further on in the newsletter for this article. Last week some of our students attended the Regional Cross Country event that was at Cessnock Racecourse. We had 3 students competing: Luke Fuller, Elodie Playdon and Nate Ward. Due to his outstanding result, Nate is now through to State Cross Country. We also have two other State representatives in Kyran Whiteman in year 4 for Touch Football and Joe Dunn year 6 for Rugby Union. WOW! We wish you all every success and congratulations on achieving State Rep level. If you have been in school this week you will have noticed the construction going on around the library. The work being done is in regards to the gutters, drainage and eves. This is long-overdue maintenance work that hopefully will resolve the flooding and water issues in our library. There will be a new garden bed in place after the excavations and hopefully this will be an opportunity for some outdoor display space. More to come on this. The Canteen refurbishment is coming along. This week the internal and external sections were painted and the new vinyl floor has gone in. See the photo attached below of the new flooring going in today. As we are moving closer to the end of term and children are getting tried, it is a timely reminder for parents to be having conversations with their children about making good choices, following rules and having a safe day at school. From the Principal Welcome to week 7.

I know that I talk a lot about future proofing our school and the facilities, but we must also future proof our kids learning. We are living in the time of great generational change. As many of the parents in our school are either Gen X and Gen Y and some Gen Z parents, we can acknowledge that school looks very different from the days when we attended.

The info graphics included, courtesy of McCrindle Social Research Australia, 2017, clearly show the differences in the generations. The graphic above specifically highlighting the differences between the styles of learning for a Baby Boomer (BB) in comparison to a Gen Z (Z). As educators, we need to prepare children for this world by giving them the best start we can and be 21st century ready. They need to have the skills and strategies that they can take into the workforce for jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

Simple things that parents can do to support our work at school is to:

Make sure that your child attends school every day unless they are medically unwell to do so.

Value learning and look beyond ‘that’s different to what I did at school’

Be part of what happens with your child at school – get involved.

At Kotara South Public School we are focussing our teacher professional learning on Mathematics. As you know, we have been heavily invovled with a state initiaitve called Mathematics Building Blocks for Numeracy (MBB4N). This has ensured our teachers are presenting, engaging and connecting with all children each day with learning maths that students can communicate, problem solve, reason, understand and become fluent mathemeatical thinkers. This is building the skills and knowledge for their futures. I understand that this may sound very ‘pie in the sky’ to some parents, but our children are in the vortex of change for the workforce and we must be preparing them now in primary school. By parents having an understadning and acceptance of this shift, gives children the confidence to grow and learn.

Future Focussed Learning @ KSPS

P&C Association HAVE YOU SOLD YOUR BOX OF CHOCOLATES? Our Cadbury Chocolate Fundraiser runs through Friday, 23rd June.

A box of chocolates was sent home last Thursday with the eldest child in each participating family. Thank you to the families who have opted out but still contributed their donation to support our fundraising efforts.

Additional boxes can be collected in the office.

Once you’ve sold all your chocolates (Each bar is $1 with 50 to a box), please return all of the money in the envelopes provided with the details on the front completed. All money and left-over chocolates need to be returned to the office by Friday, 23rd of June. Thank you for supporting the P&C and our school through this fundraiser.

BOOK CLUB With the continued support of students and parents, the last orders for issue 3 raised another $260 in rewards for our children’s classrooms and the library!

Since starting the book club last year not only has the library ordered loads of new books but each stage has had a turn at using rewards to obtain books and classroom supplies selected from a catalogue.

Don’t forget to get your orders in for the current issue 4, which are due Friday!

KINDER READINESS SESSION The P&C were proud to be part of the Kinder Readiness Session held on Monday evening. We provided light refreshments and P&C members were there to answer questions and queries all new parents have about their child starting kinder next year.

The P&C used some of the money raised from the Bunnings BBQ to purchase a new urn for the tea/coffee we provide at various events during the year, like the Kinder Readiness Session. This purchase would not have been possible if it weren’t for the great support we receive from KSPS families. Thank you.
