The Careers Center Dormitory

The Careers Center makes time to meet with you individually, and provides tailor-made careers advice. The Careers Center provides students with not only support in applying for various qualifications courses, internship programs and joint company information sessions, but also with practical lectures on how to join in group discussions and how to prepare for job interviews.
The International CenterThe International Center, established in May, 1988, is the office for the international exchange of students and scholars. The center promotes the internationalization of the University. One of its main activities is to teach Japanese language and culture to international students and to the Japanese returnee students who have lived extensively in foreign countries. The center also provides English language instruction for Komazawa University students.
Komazawa University has a dormitory with 14 private rooms. This accommodation is available only for official exchange students, visiting scholars and researchers. The International Center assigns the rooms to official exchange students as its first priority, and secondly to visiting scholars and researchers.
WelfareThe Health Care Center
The Health Care Center provides not only first-aid treatment for sudden illness and injury but also medical care and counseling for physical and mental concerns. Whether you have a condition upon entering university or develop a condition after entering university which may affect your studies, you can consult doctors who specialize in internal medicine, surgery, orthopedics, and psychosomatic internal medicine. This center also offers health guidance about first-aid treatment and the prevention of illness.
The Student Counseling Room
It is natural for students to have various concerns and worries during their time at university. Dealing with such concerns and worries one at a time by yourself means you will be strong enough to enter society after graduation. However, it is no good allowing these worries to build up inside so that the situation worsens. At these times, the Student Counseling Room comes into play. Here you can consult our professional counselors, advisors and lawyers in total confidentiality about your concerns no matter how small or big they may be.
We are here to provide support so that each of you can lead a full university life.

The members o f t he Spo r t s Association are the stars who take part in official matches to uphold the honour of the University and the club. All groups which are m e m b e r s o f t h e K o m a z a w a University Sports Association are affiliated members of the various sports federations. If you have the motivation, even complete beginners can become active members.
Cultural and Arts Clubs
These groups were established before 1972 and have a long tradition. You can really make the most of your time at university by joining one of these cultural, arts, study or performance clubs, where you will be able to make new friends and meet new challenges.
For non-native Japanese speaking students the following courses in Japanese language and Japanese studies are offered.

FACULTY DEPARTMENT DEGREE
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences consists of seven departments and offers mainly University-wide general education courses. The Department of
Philosophy and Religious Studies and the Department of Japanese Culture provide Arts subjects; the Department of Natural Sciences, science
subjects; the Department of English provides English language courses; the Department of Foreign Languages provides courses in other foreign
languages; the Department of Sport and Health Studies provides courses in Sports and Health; and the Department of Teacher Education provides
courses in teacher education. These subjects enable students to develop outside their normal disciplines.
Arts and Sciences

Department of Zen Buddhist StudiesThe Department offers courses in various fields of Buddhism, ranging from China to Japan, from the earliest days of Zen Buddhism to the present, and from its teachings and philosophy to its arts. The Department also equips students with a general knowledge of the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism from Master Dogen and Master Keizan to the present.
In your first and second years you will learn languages such as the classical Chinese necessary for researching literature on Buddhism and will acquire a broad fundamental knowledge of Buddhism.
In your third and fourth years you will choose a field of interest from the wide range of courses available and study this field in Seminar I and Seminar II. You will be able to take special subjects provided in the Department of Buddhist Studies according to your interests.
Department of Buddhist StudiesThe Department provides courses on the science of religion and Buddhism developed in various regions such as India, Tibet, China, Sri Lanka and South East Asia. The Department also provides a general introduction to the Soto sect of Zen Buddhism.
In your first and second years you will learn languages such as the classical Chinese and Sanskrit necessary for researching literature on Buddhism and will acquire a broad fundamental knowledge about Buddhism.

Faculty of Buddhism
Department of Japanese LiteratureThe Department offers courses in Japanese language and literature, from
classical literature (e.g., Manyoshu, the Tale of Genji, and Heike Monogatari)
to contemporary literature (e.g., works of Soseki Natsume, Haruki
Murakami, Shuntaro Tanikawa). The Department also provides various
courses such as courses in Media, on Child literature, and on Performance.
In your first year you will learn about Japanese language and literature and the
methods for studying it.
In your second year you will be able to practice using logical thinking through debates
and presentations and will be able to study in a wide range of specialized courses.
In your third year you will be able to join a seminar class in which you can further
develop your knowledge and research skills. You will also be able to take a variety of
specialized courses.
In your fourth year you will write your thesis.
Department of English and American LiteratureThe Department provides English courses to strengthen students’ English
proficiency and courses on English and American literature, poetry, theatrical
performance, film and arts culture, and history. The Department also offers
courses on English linguistics ranging from the history of English to variation in
English.
In your first and second years you will develop practical English language skills through
the course, “Speech and Communication.” You will also acquire the knowledge and
reading skills needed to appreciate English literature through the “English Exercise” and
“Literature Reading” courses.
In your third year you can choose from a variety of elective courses based on your own
individual interests. You will also take a small-group seminar course to acquire more
advanced knowledge and to hone your research skills.
In your fourth year you will write a thesis through the support of tutorials.

Department of GeographyCultural Study Program
The Department offers courses and opportunities to do field work which help develop
your skills for observing and investigating life in cities and in farming and mountain
villages from a geographical perspective. The Department also provides courses which
equip you with the skills needed to research the essence of regional culture in Japan
and other countries in a comprehensive manner.
In your first year you will learn about the basics of geography and will develop analytical skills in
introductory and practical courses.
In your second year you can choose from a variety of specialized subjects according to your own
individual interests.
In your third year you will learn research skills in field work in elective courses.
In your fourth year you will write a thesis based on the knowledge you have acquired in courses and
while doing field work.
Environmental Study Program
In this Major you can study courses concerning the relationships between the regional
environment and human beings, in terms of climate, geography and water circulation.
In your first year you will learn about the basics of geography and will develop analytical skills in
introductory and practical courses.
In your second year you can choose from a variety of specialized subjects according to your own
individual interests.
In your third year you will learn research skills in field work in elective courses.
In your fourth year you will write a thesis based on the knowledge you have acquired in courses and
while doing field work.
Department of HistoryJapanese History Program
The Department offers practical courses in which
students learn how to conduct historical document
research and decipherment, theory construction and
proof, and how to present their research results. The
Department also provides chances to practice historical
research in the field through courses such as the one
leading to the qualifications necessary to be a curator.
Foreign History Program
In this section of the Department you will be able to develop your
knowledge and skills through a variety of lectures and lessons which will
help you acquire insight into current situations in the world from the
perspective of history.
In your first year you will learn the basics of Japanese history
and basic skills in historical research.
In your second and third years you will choose from a variety of
specialized subjects on different periods and fields according to
your own individual interests. “Studies in Historical Materials I to
IV” are very important courses for acquiring the skills for
empirical research.
In your third and fourth years you will learn how to interpret
historical materials in the “Seminar on Studies in Japanese
History I and II.” In the fourth year you will write a thesis based
on the knowledge you have acquired in the courses.
Archaeology Program
In this section of the Department you will have the opportunity to participate in
archaeological digs in China as well as in Japan. This major also provides
practical courses on photographic techniques, survey work, and antiquities
measurement in order to develop students’ skil ls for participating in
archaeological digs.
In your first year you will learn basic skills such as how to use the Library and how to
write papers, while studying an outline of world history. You will also develop your
understanding of historical science methodology.
In your second year you will gain knowledge about history and methodology while
studying oriental and occidental history. You will learn basic skills for dealing with
literary and historical documents.
In your third year you will learn about the latest research on history. You will conduct
research into the literature and on historical documents and will report the results.
In your fourth year you
will write a thesis based
on your research results.
In your first year you will learn about the basics of archaeology and acquire abilities to
interpret archaeology from a broad perspective.
In your second year you will learn the basic skills and practical methodologies you will
need on archaeological digs through practical courses.
In your third year you will experience archaeological digs overseas as well as in Japan,
and will further develop your understanding of practical research methods on site.
In your fourth year you will write a thesis testing your own hypothesis by collecting,
analyzing and interpreting
archaeological materials.

Department of Sociology
Sociology Program
This section of the Department systematically offers courses from basic to advanced levels. Students can learn about social systems in a systematic way, discover their interests through study, and acquire the knowledge and flexible skills required in today’s society.
In your first year you will learn the basics of Sociology, develop computer skills and study methods in social research.
In your second year you will learn how to read and write reports and how to make presentations in seminars. You will also be able to take lecture courses in a variety of fields.
In your third year you will be able to take a seminar class and learn more about research in Sociology. You will also conduct a collaborative research project and make a report on it, as you acquire an understanding of advanced methods in social research.
In your fourth year you will write a thesis based on your own interests under the supervision of your seminar instructor.
Social Work Program
You will receive a step-by-step career education through the courses in this major. Courses on counselling and client support are provided for those who want to be professionals in the social welfare field.
In your first year you will learn the basics of Social Welfare, develop computer skills and study methods in social research. You will develop a firmer image of the direction you wish to take in your future career.
In your second and third years you will be able to choose lectures and courses based on your own interests. You will gain more advanced knowledge and skills and will be able to put these to the test in practical training classes provided by the Social Welfare specialist courses. You will also learn about living as a member of society in the career training classes provided in the Social Welfare basic course. In seminar classes you will develop your problem-solving abilities.
In your fourth year you will write a thesis and learn special social welfare skills in the training course for mental health care.
Department of PsychologyThe three main features of the Department curriculum are “an emphasis on fundamental education,” “provision of a wide variety of subjects” and “making use of the most up-to-date information.”
In your first year you will learn about the basics of psychology through introductory courses and special lectures.
In your second year you will learn about various fields in psychology from both theoretical and practical perspectives. You will also learn about scientific approaches and methods in psychology.
In your third year you will learn from a new range of topics more about psychology and related areas.
In your fourth year you will study a topic which interests you and write a thesis.

Department of EconomicsAfter receiving an extensive grounding in general economics in general, you will begin to create theoretical models of your own and conduct statistical analyses of data. The courses provided are designed to meet the future needs of students in their chosen field or career and ensure that students systematically learn about their specialization.
In your first year you will gain basic study skills through the Foundation Seminar, receive a broad, basic education through the University Common Courses, and will build the foundations you will need in your specialist field.
In your second year you will deepen your specialist knowledge in small seminar classes and will systematically take specialist subjects in your chosen field.
In your third year you will be able to gain a wider understanding of economics by taking courses in the Departments of Commerce and Contemporary Applied Economics.
In your final year you will be able to bring everything you have learned together in a graduation thesis which you complete under the course “Graduation Research” and which you take alongside your seminar class.
Department of CommerceBy thinking about how contemporary society should relate to markets and to the companies at their center, you will begin to acquire the ability to think theoretically and practically for yourself. The Department of Commerce offers courses specifically designed to help you decide on a career path and you will have opportunities to hear about the latest business trends from lecturers who are currently working in companies.
In your first year you will learn how today’s companies operate in the market covering basic areas such as distribution and information, accounting and management, and finance and trade.
In your second year you will build on your basic knowledge of commerce and will develop the ability to think about society as you begin to gain a more specialized understanding.
In your third year you will become more deeply engaged with commerce as you explore your own interests and you will start to try to uncover problems which contemporary companies face.
In your fourth year you wil l spend more time investigating the problems you have identified and will consolidate your own ideas regarding the ways in which contemporary society relates to the markets.
Department of Contemporary Applied EconomicsIn our Department you will learn how to view rapidly changing current economic phenomena from both a macro and micro perspective through our comprehensive curriculum which will allow you to grasp new economic trends. You will have the opportunity to learn about cutting-edge areas such as game theory as well as classic economic theory and economics as a system and its relationship with law. The Department also offers courses which look at a variety of organizations which support community economics. These courses focus on the management of such organizations. The curriculum is designed to allow you to choose from a wide selection of courses.
In your first year you will learn techniques for acquiring many types of knowledge which you will encounter at university while at the same time taking liberal arts courses and learning about the fundamentals of economics.
In your second year you will deepen your understanding and gain greater expertise by taking courses outside the basic core and by joining seminar classes.
In your third year, based on a firm understanding of the essentials of commerce, you will further develop your expertise and your ability to think about society.
In your fourth year you will look carefully at the problems you have ident i f i ed fo r yourself and will begin to form your own ideas and opinions about contemporary society and how it relates to the market.

Faculty of Economics
Department of LawIn order to respond to complex contemporary legal issues, this Department provides special courses in environmental law, intellectual property law, and consumer law. Students cultivate a practical sense of the law through courses given by law practitioners (e.g., lawyers, public servants, and tax accountants), who are actively engaged in legal work in the community.
In your first year you study foundational courses such as Constitutional Law, Civil Law, and Criminal Law.
From the second year you can register for applied and advanced courses in Commercial Law, Civil Procedure Law, and Criminal Procedure Law.
Department of Political ScienceBeginning with a course called “Contemporary Society and Politics” which allows you to learn how core politics drives society, this Department provides courses which deal with priority areas in society such as “International and Area Studies,” “Politics and Media Studies” and “Government and Public Policy.” In seminar classes you will have the opportunity to study with teachers who may expect you to do field research, engage in debates, or visit parliament or courts. In the Centre for Research in Mass Communications, you will be able to study how newspapers are put together and presented.
In your first year you study how society functions and ways of thinking about it mainly through introductory courses on politics and public administration.
In your second year you choose courses for yourself which fit your future goals and study to acquire the knowledge and methods which form the basic content of each course.
In your third and fourth years you study advanced courses which introduce a practical and professional element. You can also take relevant courses in other Faculties and Departments which will stretch you further. And in seminar classes you will apply the knowledge you have gained by carrying out your own research projects and surveys.

Faculty of Law
Department of Business AdministrationThis Department aims to foster “professional managers” who can think independently and take action in response to sudden changes in contemporary society. The Department places an emphasis not only on a variety of specialized courses but also on discussion and group work in seminar courses so that students can acquire the problem-solving skills which are required of today’s business managers.
In your first year you will acquire the knowledge and ideas which will act as a foundation for the next stage of your studies through courses such as Corporate Management, Economic Analysis, Corporate Accounting, and Corporate Bookkeeping.
In your second, third and fourth years of study you will be able to choose from over fifty specialized courses according to your own interests and you will be able to register for seminar courses with small class sizes.
Department of Marketing ManagementIn this Department you will have opportunities to learn strategies for making full use of corporate management resources (people, goods, money, and information) so as to meet customers’ needs or to create markets in an unrivaled way in collaboration with outside partners. The Faculty places an emphasis on small-group education so as to develop your individual ability and the ability to work in teams and provides freshman seminars and seminars for second year to fourth year-students.
In your f irst and second years you wil l take courses which are essential for becoming marketing experts who are well-versed in management skil ls. The systematic approach allows you to gradually acquire these skills in both basic and practical courses.
In your third and fourth years you will engage in lots of discussion with expert instructors and other seminar members so that you develop an ability to explain your own original ideas logically.

Department of Radiological SciencesIn our Department you will gain the knowledge and skills in radiological science which are needed to become a medical specialist at the same time as taking a wide range of liberal arts subjects. The curriculum offered at Komazawa is unique in providing both courses which focus on techniques in medical treatment and courses which focus on imaging techniques.
In your first year you will study subjects to do with the foundations of medicine, science and engineering such as anatomy, radiological physics and electrical engineering, as well as having the opportunity to take a wide range of liberal arts subjects.
In your second year you will study subjects such as clinical medicine, imaging technology, and radiation technology, which are necessary for the actual application of radiological sciences in a medical setting.
In your third year you will study more advanced and practical subjects according to the course. We cover all the subjects which are needed for the national examination.
In your fourth year the number of elective courses increases and you can register for courses which suit your own interests. You can also concentrate on your graduation research project and can prepare for the national examination.

Department of Global MediaTo help nurture talented people who can operate in the rapidly developing global society, this Department offers courses which allow you to develop your communication abilities both in English and in terms of media and IT literacy. This Department also offers interdisciplinary courses in economics, business administration, sociology, international cultural studies, law, communication, and information science, which are designed to help you understand the true nature of media and of the content they carry.
In your first year you will learn about information literacy and media literacy taught by IT and media specialists and you will be taught practical English by native English instructors.
From your second year you will have the opportunity to gain overseas experience through long-term and short-term study abroad programs and through overseas internships which will help you acquire the ability to operate on the global stage.
In your third year you will be able to choose an area from a range of interdisciplinary courses which fits your own interests and you will be able to deepen your knowledge of this area by participating in a seminar class taught by someone who specializes in this field.

You can deepen the understanding you gained during
your undergraduate degree at Graduate Schools which
carry out high level research from a broad range of
perspectives. Currently, there are two-year Masters
courses and three-year Doctoral courses in fourteen
majors in seven Graduate Schools at Komazawa,
excluding the Law School. The research output attracts
considerable attention in each field and we aim to
produce graduates who can perform in a wide range of

The Undergraduate School accepts entry to all Faculties and Departments, except for the Flex B Program, by official international students. (Official international students are full-time students who enter either the four-year undergraduate program or the graduate program in April.)International students are required to have a high proficiency level in Japanese language because almost all of the lectures and seminars are offered in Japanese. Admission for International Students Fees
Applicant Qualification To qualify, applicants must satisfy each of the following requirements:

Doctoral ProgramThe applicants’ nationality must be other than Japanese.The applicants who have received or are scheduled to receive a Master’s Degree by March 31.The applicants who have received or are scheduled to receive a Master’s Degree or a degree equivalent to a Master’s Degree from a university outside Japan.The applicants who have been approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science, and Technology in JapanThe applicants who have been approved by the Graduate School through an individual entrance screening as those with scholastic abilities equivalent to or greater than Master’s Degree holders.

Doctoral ProgramA preliminary qualification examination is required for the applicants who graduated from a junior college, a college of technology, a specialized school or other educational institution.Note: The contents of the examination are different for each Graduate School.
Individual Examination of Applicants for Admission(Preliminary Qualification Examination)
To qualify, applicants must satisfy each of the following requirements:
The applicants must submit an application form to the Admission Center, the University Information Bureau. The application period is in November.
Application Procedure
The applicants must take a written examination and interview in Japanese. (The examination subjects are different in each department.) The examination is conducted in January.
Entrance Examination
Written examinations in the applicant’s specialty and on the applicant’s proficiency level in a foreign language, and an interview are conducted in Japanese. The examination subjects are different for each Department and School. The examination for the Master’s Program is held in September and February. The examination for the Doctoral Program is held only in February.
N.B. 1. Tuition, Equipment, Laboratory Fees and Ed. Support Assoc. Fees can be paid by installments.
2. At our university, the first year students are required to enter the Alumni Assoc. and their guarantors are required to enter the Education Support Association.
3. In addition to the above-mentioned fees, other Laboratory Fees are collected annually in: the Department of Geography and the Department of History, Major in Archaeology (15,000) the Department of Sociology, Major in Sociology (10,000) the Department of Psychology (30,000)
4. In addition, an Orientation Fee is collected only in the first year in the Department of History and the Department of Sociology, Major in Sociology. (22,000)
N.B. 1. Tuition, Equipment, Laboratory Fees and Ed. Support Assoc. Fees can be paid by installments.
2. Students who have completed a Komazawa Master's course and who then continue on to take the second part of the Ph.D program, have their School Entrance Fee waived （Law School excepted).
3. Students who graduated from other universities are required to pay 130,000 yen from the second year and after.
4. In the Psychology Program, the Division of Arts and Sciences, 60,000 yen is collected as a Laboratory Fee each year after students are admitted.
5. In the Division of Global Media Studies, 50,000 yen is collected as a Laboratory Fee each year after students are admitted.
6. At our university, the first year students (except students who graduated from Komazawa University) are required to enter the Alumni Assoc. and their guarantors are required to enter the Ed. Support Assoc.
7. In the Law School, as a Laboratory Fee, 20,000 yen is collected in the year when students take an ‘Externship’ and 30,000 yen is collected in the year when students take ‘Legal Clinic,’ as a lump-sum payment.
8. Concerning the entrance procedures for the long-term (four-year, five-year and six-year) courses, please inquire at the Law School office.
Entrance Examination
The applicants must submit the required application form to the Admission Center, the University Information Bureau. For an application from overseas, the submission period is in June and July. For an application from within Japan, the submission period is in August and January. The application period for the Doctoral Program is only in January. (Applications from overseas are not available.)

Scholarships at Komazawa UniversityKomazawa University supports international students with financial difficulties through internal and external scholarship programs. All the university scholarships for international students are provided for free.
The university website provides you with information such as the date of distribution of application forms, and when the scholarship organizations put out a call for applications.
Please check the requirements for applicants for each scholarship program on the scholarship bulletin board and the university website.
In principle, you cannot apply for other full scholarships or grants apart from those we offer.
International students (first year students) applying for these scholarships are required to take the Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) beforehand.
