A Message from Rabbi Schiftan“A Rare Moment...”
Summer is here andI am happy to tellyou that your Boardhas been very busyfrom the start. Many
of you may not know, but one of the firstand important Board Actions is to reviewand approve The Temple 2010/2011 fiscalyear budget. Budget & Finance Chair BenRuss, the Budget & Finance Committeeand Treasurer, Ralph Levy, have put in manyhours looking at controlling expenses andways to increase revenues. Your clergy, staffand Board of Trustees continue to recognizethe need to be diligent during thesechallenging times.
Though summer is usually a little slower dueto staff vacations, your Board is activelypreparing for this upcoming year throughour Board Committees. I have asked all our
committee chairs to complete theircommittees. If you get a call from one ofthe Chairs inviting you to participate, pleaseget on board. If you are interested involunteering to be on a committee, pleasecall Nancy Richardson. She will make sureyour name is given to the appropriate Chair.Each committee has an officer liaison &staff liaison and we are listening.
The staff is also busy preparing for the HighHolidays. As part of that preparation, Iwould like to thank Betsy Chernau and SallyWolfe for their time preparing this year’sMemorial Book. Once again we will handout these books during our Yizkor Service.Please consider listing the names of lovedones you would like to memorialize.
By now, you should have also received yourcopy of The Temple Directory. Please take
some time to look at the directory. There isa lot of important information listed,including your name and contactinformation. We apologize if we have madea mistake, but if so please contact MitzieRussell so that our records may be updated.
Last, I would like to thank those who havegenerously given to the Rabbi’sDiscretionary Fund in an effort to assist ourTemple families adversely affected by theMay storms and flooding. Please join us fora Community Shabbat on July 9 incelebration of our community’s response.
I look forward to seeing you at many of ourcongregational activities during theupcoming year. My best wishes for a relaxingand enjoyable summer.
Though I havebeen in regularc o m m u n i c a t i o nregarding TheTemple’s response tothe recent f loods
(and the Jewish Community’s response, as well),I want to devote my remarks for this column toupdate you on our on-going efforts to reachout, comfort and support those in need in ourcommunity. I also want to invite you to awonderful, “silver lining” event that symbolizesthe extraordinary nature of this community.
To date, we have received nearly $30,000 indonations to our Flood Relief efforts. Thesefunds have come from members of thecongregation, members of other ReformCongregations around the country, the Unionfor Reform Judaism, and from a variety of otherindividuals who have expressed a desire to helpmembers of The Temple community who havebeen adversely affected in catastrophic,substantial or significant ways by the floods.
By the middle of June, we will have distributedthe majority of these funds to nearly three dozenhouseholds representing approximately fiftyindividuals, not including children. These reliefchecks went out to members of thecongregation, members of our TemplePlayschool, immediate relatives of Templemembers, and other individuals whose plight,condition or unique circumstances made themeligible for consideration for funding.
We have received many heartfelt letters ofgratitude from these individuals, and wecontinue to receive more each week. Andinterestingly enough, we have received equallypowerful letters from those wonderfulindividuals who have contributed funds to oureffort. In addition we have provided meals tothose displaced from their homes, as well asvolunteers to help with the cleaning andrebuilding efforts.
Indeed, our entire Jewish Community hasreason to celebrate. One of the silver linings of
this particular tragedy is the further realizationof that which we already knew: that this JewishCommunity (as well as the wider community)is extraordinarily active in reaching out to thosein need, putting aside divisions and differencesto unite in a collective response in assisting thosewho are in need.
To that end, I am honored to invite you to anhistoric Shabbat, a Unity Shabbat, on Friday,July 9th. This service, to be held here at ourTemple at 5:45 PM, will be a service led by allthe Rabbis of all the congregations here inNashville. It is a rare occasion, in which ourcommunity and its clergy will come together towelcome the Sabbath with one voice, regardlessof denomination or affiliation. We will have achance to celebrate our collaborative efforts,even as we commemorate the devastating eventsof early May.
