n Joan Grossman is pleased and thrilled to announce that her son Benjamin Grossman-Ponemon has recently be-come engaged to Rebecca Wolkoff of Cleveland, OH.

n At K.I. you are never too young to have a mitzvah. In November Noah Denmark was student of the month at Williams El-ementary school and Levi Denmark was student of the month in December so the Denmark boys swept winter 2019!!

n For my Bar-Mitzvah/tikkun olam project, I am collecting kits for the Pittsfield Emergency Recovery Committee, which the rabbi helped start a few months ago.

The committee helps the community assist those affect-ed by fire or flood. It coordinates collections of house-hold items to give to displaced families. Navigators, who are mentors trained by the committee, will help families work their way through the many tasks that they must complete to clean up, heal, and rebuild. The committee also is raising funds for limited direct assistance to affect-ed families.

I am helping by collecting kitchen kits. The purpose of the kits is to get families started again when they move into their next home.

I chose this as my Bar-Mitzvah/tikkun olam project partly because I have experienced a house fire, and also because I think it is important for us to help others in this way.

I am asking the congregation to help me collect the contents of three kitchen kits. This includes items to cook with, items to eat with, and items to serve with, but not food, furniture, or appliances. Everything donated for this project should be new or unused.

The collection will start on March 1. To contribute, please take a card from the social hall (like for KI’s Adopt-a-Family project) and bring your chosen item(s) back to Knesset Israel before April 12.

January and February, even as the enticing smell of hamantashen wafts through the building, are the time of year that K.I. staff and programming volunteers turn our at-tention to the upcoming summer. Given this frigid winter, the process has been particularly uplift-ing. Especially during this year of celebrating Knes-set Israel’s 125th anniversa-ry, we are looking forward to a dynamic season of warm hospitality, compelling programs and moving worship.

Shabbaton. Speakers, JTS, Film Festival

As plans coalesce, you will be hearing about many exciting events. For our Wildman Shabbaton in early May, we will welcome Professor David Freidenreich, a scholar of Judaism and comparative re-ligions at Colby College, Maine. In July, thanks to a generous gift from Rabbi Jan Kaufman in honor of the 40th anniversary of her ordination, we will welcome Rabbi David Ellenson, who is in the process of his second retirement from the presi-dency of Hebrew Union College. Three JTS in the Berkshires programs will offer scholarly riffs on the Jewish resonance of this summer’s cultural and musical of-

ferings in the Berkshires. And, as always, our Berk-shires Jewish Film Festival will continue to move and entertain thousands of locals, seasonal residents and visitors alike.

Summer Kiddush

Shabbat is a focal point of Knesset Israel’s life during the summer. Over the last three summers, thanks to the generosity of a chal-

lenge gift, sponsorships and many con-tributions from members and guests, we have served a sumptuous kiddush lun-cheon every shabbat in July and August.

Our membership committee hears over and over again that these luncheons, expertly prepared by Chris Goetze, help people—congregants, returning visi-tors, newcomers—to feel welcome at Knesset Israel. The conversations that ensue forge the connections that are the

building blocks of community and the continuing vibrancy of our synagogue.

I am pleased to announce that we have again received a ‘challenge grant’ to-wards our summer kiddushes. Between that grant and sponsorship pledges, we have achieved almost half of our goal of raising a total of $8,000 this spring. Gifts totaling $4,500 will enable Knesset Israel to feature a kiddush luncheon every sin-gle week from July 4 to the end of Au-gust. I hope everyone will participate in this important hospitality effort, wheth-er by sponsoring a kiddush in honor of a simha or in commemoration of a yahr-zeit ($500), or by making contributions of any size in support of the effort. Every gift makes a difference.

Upcoming Sabbatical

The summer planning process is unusual this year, however, because I will be out of town when many of the programs take place. The Weiners will be travelling around the world (literally!) this summer, from early June until the end of August. After ten years in the Berkshires, we are grateful for this 3-month sabbatical. It presents us with a priceless opportunity to recharge, visit family, and explore some new places. We will be spending several weeks in Jerusalem, where the children will attend a trilingual Google-s ponsored technology camp and I will be studying at the Shalom Hartman Institute. We hope this residency in

We are hoping to pass along the family ‘travel bug…Judith and I believe that experiencing new places broadens horizons and deepens understanding.

Each Purim we commemorate the reversal of Haman’s plot to annihilate the Jews of Persia. We are reminded that ve-nahafokh hu, the opposite happened! Our enemies were defeated and the Jewish people survived. We dress in cos-tume, listen to the megilla and enjoy a purim shpiel, taking delight in celebrating the unexpected.

Our tradition instructs us to perform the following four life affirming mitzvot on Purim:

n to hear the story of Purim by listening to Megillat Esther, the Book of Esther n to enjoy a festive meal (seudah) n to exchange gift baskets (mishloach manot) and n to give to the needy (matanot la’evyonim).

Here at K.I., with thanks to the dedication of our Rabbi, staff and countless volunteers, we have wonderful opportunities to celebrate Purim in community. Starting in Janu-ary, Cindy Helitzer assembles a team of people from ages 7 to 95 to bake, package, and deliver hamantaschen so that we can send misholach manot to our friends and family. It is nearly impossible to quantify the number of volunteer hours that Cindy and her team devote to this project. Cindy handles this project with tremendous professional-ism, good cheer, and that ever present smile! Todah Raba, Cindy!

The K.I. Band is another group that puts in countless hours to enhance our Purim cel-ebration. If you have not attended the annual Purim concert, this is one not to be missed! I guarantee that you’ll love the music and enjoy the comedic lyrics! I hope to see on Saturday night, March 9.

The Rabbi organizes a reading of the Megillah that truly entertains all ages! Readers chant the words with, shall we say, a Purim style! It’s an incredibly enjoyable evening so please mark off March 20 on your calendar.

In this topsy-turvy world in which we live, let’s take a moment to celebrate life and the blessings bestowed upon us. Chag Purim Sameach!

Knesset Israel Statement of PurposeWelcome.

We are here to nourish mind, heart, and soul.

We are here to inspire through word and deed.

We are here to accompany each other on life’s journey.

We are here to celebrate in community.

We are here to bring life to the wisdom and values of Torah.

We are here to transform our world.

Jerusalem, plus our travels throughout the country, will lay the groundwork for our children to develop a strong, lifelong connection to Israel and to encounter the wider Jewish world. We are also hoping to pass along the family ‘travel bug’ —Judith and I believe that experiencing new places broadens horizons and deepens understanding.

Meanwhile the summer here should feel seamless. Working together with Myrna, Richie, Diana, and our lay leaders, l am busy arranging program, service, and lifecycle coverage for the three months that I will be away. Knesset Israel’s robust volunteer culture and depth of Jewish knowledge will enable the congregation not only to continue to operate during my absence but to thrive and grow. Shabbat mornings will feature oppor-tunities to study Torah with many of my rabbinic and cantorial colleagues—and perhaps other scholars and professors—who spend all or part of their summer in the Berkshires. I have been helping Marcie Greenfield Simons, a beloved K.I. leader who now works as a chaplain at Berkshire Medical Center, as she pre-pares to cover the congregation’s life-cycle and pastoral needs for the weeks I will be away. I will be looking to build a schedule for leadership of shabbat ser-vices during the summer, and I thank you in advance for signing on to help.

Purim Around the Corner

However, summer is still a few months away. I hope to see everyone during our week of Purim celebrations— the con-cert, the carnival at Temple Anshe Amu-nim, the community dinner & Megillah reading. Come and enjoy!

Note: Read all about the Purim happen-ings in our page 1 article and in the Calen-dar on the next page.

KOL K.I. • MARCH 2019 • ADAR I AND ADAR II 5779 n 7

Hello readers, check out my Spotlight On column this month with our special guest Yael Snowise. It’s great to be able to

feature some of the younger members of our Congregation!

Spotlight On… Yael SnowiseYael, it’s so nice to have you as my guest this month. Welcome. What kind of mu-sical training have you had—your teach-ers, instruments, or voice coaches?

Yael: My musical training began as a baby and toddler when I attended the “Music Together” progarm taught by Sandy Russell. My mother tells me that I loved that. I took piano lessons be-fore I was eight years old but in school I learned the recorder in third grade, and discovered my love of the flute in fourth grade. Joy Mullen was my teacher in fourth grade, and I began taking flute lessons with Tari Roosa at the Berkshire Music School in fifth grade. Tari has been teaching me ever since. I have played in

a school concert band since sixth grade, and this year I am a part of a duet eith a violin player under the instruction of Alla Zernitskaya. In addition to my playing instruments over the years, my grandfather has taught me about singing, and I’ve participated in a cabaret class with Sherri Buxton.

What do you listen to when you want to hear some music? Favorite bands or groups, your influences, what you hear around the house.

Yael: When I listen to music it could be anything ranging from Israeli, to instrumental, to pop, country or A-cappella. I really love many different kinds of music and I don’t have a favorite group.

How have you been involved in music at K.I.? I know you have been coming here for many years.

Yael: At K.I. I started helping to teach the melodies for many prayers to the kids in Ju-nior Congregation. I also am now tutoring my second Bat Mitzvah student, and I have participated a couple of times in Shirei Shabbat.

We loved having you as a service leader at Shirei Shabbat. What do you like about our music or services?

Yael: Shirei Shabbat is a very unique service in my mind and I love it because it is dif-ferent from everything else. I love having the instruments accompany the singing and think it is really beautiful. I like that the service appeals to all ages and everyone can take part in it. It’s my favorite service at K.I.

Do you see a future for yourself in music, either as an amateur or professional?

Yael: Yes and no. I love music and I can see it always being in my life, but at this age it’s too hard to say what the future will bring.

Thanks so much Yael, it was great hearing your story!

Join us at Knesset Israel on Saturday, March 23 at 8:00 pm for Havdalah followed imme-diately by a special screening of the award-winning film Arranged, which is an add-on to this year’s Berkshire Jewish Film Festival.

Arranged (98 minutes) is a film about friendship and commonality. Two young women, one Orthodox, the other Muslim, and both teachers at a public school in Brooklyn, find they have much in common, not least of which is that they are both going through the process of arranged marriages. It’s a sweet and light film, perfect for a March night in the Berkshires!

“Lovely... [Co-Directors, Co-Producers] Schaefer and Crespo have achieved a unique authenticity with this film, both in its religious underpinnings and its American-ness…” wrote Nora Ankrum of the Austin Chronicle.

The dedicated Berkshire Jewish Film Festival committee happened upon this movie inadvertently during their search for this summer’s festival, now in it’s 33rd year. Al-though the film is not brand new (it debuted in 2007), its quality, audience appeal, and award-winning status could not be ignored.

Awards include “Best Feature” and “Best Film” at the Brooklyn International Film Fes-tival, “Grand Prize” at the Skip City International D-Cinema Festival, and winner of the “Audience Award” at the Washington Jewish, Berkshire International, and Palm Beach Film Festivals.

Arranged | March 23 at 8:00 pm | Tickets $5 Knesset Israel • 16 Colt Road, Pittsfield

Light refreshments will be served following the screening.

If you plan on attending, please call 413.445.4872 x16 and indicate how many will be in your group so we can estimate how many chairs and how much food to set up.

Francis Benhamou and Zoe Lister-Jones star in the award-winning movie “Arranged.”

Nearly 50 people gathered in the Chapel on January 23rd to watch the delightful film Egg Cream and participate in learning about the Lower East Side.

Our children heard about life in the Lower East Side at the turn of the last century and shared in the memories of our older members as they related their family histories and experiences as immigrants.

The event culminated in dinner and the making of authentic New York City Egg Creams!
