from the Presidents The big news this month is that your Board of Directors has voted to begin the process of affiliation with the Reform Movement. After reviewing the surveys and tallying all the numbers it is clear that the majority of our mem- bers are in favor of affiliation and the benefits this association will bring to our wonderful and growing community. This month the JHJC will be sending out a membership letter. After seven years we are making some adjustments to our dues and fees structure. There are three major changes: High Holy Days ticketing, membership payment options and a committee to address any financial concerns that may arise from our new fee structure. We ask you to please make your membership a priority. Dues and fees are the foundation of our operating funds and fairly allocates the cost among our members. The JHJC must have sufficient funds if we are to continue to provide our range of services and events. We all share the responsibility for our growth and prosperity and have an important stake in our community. We remain committed to a philosophy of inclusiveness and wel- come everyone who wishes to participate in any of our events, regardless of ability to pay. Each and every one of us must do our part. We have a whirlwind month. Our annual Membership Party will be held at the Lyndsay McCandless Gallery. Rabbi Gerry Weider will be returning to lead a Shabbat service, meet with our B'nai Mitzvah students and lead a morning adult hike and discussion. AIPAC and the JHJC will sponsor meetings with our senior Senator Mike Enzi and newly-appointed Senator John Barasso to discuss Israel and issues involving relations with the U.S. and Israel. And Seth Ward, profes- sor of religious studies at the University of Wyoming, will be returning for an evening lecture. Check the newsletter for dates and times for all these events. August is a glorious month in Jackson Hole.We are all coming, going, hiking, biking, boating and just plain busy. But take a moment to talk about the JHJC with family and friends. Remember, your individual participation inspires everyone. Special thank yous to Carol Mann for her beautiful and thoughtful Shabbat service in July, Chazzan Judd Grossman, who makes every service special, and to the ever-gracious Rose and Ron Novak for opening their home for the service. I recently had an amazing experi-ence. I went to Israel with my familyand had my Bar Mitzvah at theWestern Wall. Having it at theWestern Wall was something that Iwill never forget. The differences ofhow Israel and Americado their Bar-Mitzvah isquite intriguing. Forexample in Israel youhave to wear a teffilenaround your head andarm. A teffilen is ablack box, and in theseboxes are scrolls withprayers on them; com-ing off the box areblack leather strapswith which you wraparound your arm in aspecial way. The Bar-Mitzvahs in Israel also seem to beshorter than those in America, butreally they aren’t. I think the reasonthat they seem shorter in Israel isbecause everyone joins in and theservice is actually a bit chaotic. Itwas quite interesting at the WesternWall, because there were manystrangers that would randomly start

to sing with your group. It was trulyan honor to have my Bar-Mitzvah atthe site of the 1st and 2nd Templesin Jerusalem.

Of the many other things we did onour trip my next favorite part, and it

was very hard tochose, was going toPetra in Jordan.Petra is a fantasticcity from 3000years ago that wasliterally carved outof a mountain; sta-bles, houses, tombsand guard towerswere all carved fromrock. Some buildingswere almost 100feet tall with grandentrances. On our

trip we also rafted the Jordan River, swam in the Mediterranean Sea, theSea of Gallilee, the Red Sea and, most interestingly, the Dead Sea, wellwe actually floated in the Dead Sea.We saw ruins from almost every cen-tury, rode camels, donkeys, horsesand walked in the Western Wall tun-nels. What a trip!

Each summer at theSpirit of the MountainsSummer Camp we striveto create an environmentwhere Jewish identities areformed, Jewish friendshipsare created, and where theseeds of life-long involvement in theJewish community are planted.

This summer we had 25 chil-dren attend our annual Jewishday camp in July. We welcomedback returning campers, andwere thrilled to have several newadditions to the mix. Thecampers participated in the usualarray of camp activities – tiedying, theater, arts and crafts, white water rafting, photography, songs, and swimming. The oldestcampers had a special overnight, despite the bad weather. JoshKleyman took the children on a

day hike and connectedthe natural environmentto Judaism. Mitzvah waswoven into the theme ofcamp as the camperssang with JuddGrossman to the seniors

at the Senior Center of JacksonHole. The campers came awayfrom the experience with hugesmiles, and told their counselorsthat they wanted to repeat theactivity for years to come. Thecampers also participated in acamp clean-up on the last day ofcamp. They collected trash fromthe grounds of the Wilson Schoolwhere camp was held. TheJackson Hole Jewish Communitywould like to send a huge “ThankYou” to the staff and volunteerswho helped make our summercamp possible.

from the PresidentsThe big news this month is that your

Board of Directors has voted to beginthe process of affiliation with theReform Movement. After reviewingthe surveys and tallying all the numbersit is clear that the majority of our mem-bers are in favor of affiliation and thebenefits this association will bring to ourwonderful and growing community.

This month the JHJC will be sendingout a membership letter. After sevenyears we are making some adjustmentsto our dues and fees structure. There arethree major changes: High Holy Daysticketing, membership payment optionsand a committee to address any financialconcerns that may arise from our new feestructure. We ask you to please makeyour membership a priority.
