Top tipsThe KODAK EKTRA Smartphone gives you the freedom to seek, shape and elevate every picture. Here are some top tips to get you started. IMAGE CAPTURE

• Quick launch the camera at any point by double tapping the physical shutter button, even when the phone is locked

• Holding down the shutter button will take photos in rapid succession, ‘burst’ mode

• Tap the scene selection wheel to enlarge it on the screen, spin or tap the wheel to select the mode you require

• Refocus and reset exposure by touching anywhere on the scene in Smart Auto – a quick way to adjust settings even within Smart Auto mode

• See how many photos you have space for on the top row of the display, tap to move between on-board memory and your Micro SD Card (if inserted). Use this when you are thinking of filming to check how long you have space for recording in different modes from 720P to 1080P, to 4K before starting the video

• Achieve a 16:9 ratio from a 4:3 ratio by dropping the megapixel setting from 21MP to 16MP on the top menu bar of the display

• Put your phone on mute if looking to take photos in quiet environments – this will mute not just the shutter sound but also the audible focus indicators. The screen will flash to indicate an image has been taken

• Click the settings icon within the camera app on the bottom left of the screen to access a range of settings including tuning the shutter sound on / off, adding geo-tagging to photos and adding grid lines to the display

Top tipsIMAGE MANAGEMENT

• In the gallery, use two fingers to zoom out, this will enable you to find the picture you are looking for more quickly

• Turn the Geo tagging setting of photos on / off from the settings menu within the camera

• Switch between ‘filmstrip’ gallery and ‘grid’ gallery views by tapping the filmstrip / grid icon

• Copy images to different albums by selecting them and choosing ‘copy to album’ from the extended menu

• From an image in the Gallery you can open one of two editors with a single touch – either Kodak’s Editor on the bottom left, for doing things like cropping images or applying basic filters, or SNAPSEED on the bottom right – Google’s professional grade photo editor

• Images edited and saved with SNAPSEED will go into a new folder in the album called ‘SNAPSEED’ that will be created when you save your first image

• From the gallery, photos can be ‘shared’ straight to Kodak’s built-in Prints App. Long press on an image and this will enable you to select several to share

Deep dive into modes

Smart Auto: this mode lets the camera do the hard work but still allows you to make a range of adjustments. Turn the flash on / off, enable red eye removal, set a 3, 5 or 10 second timer, see the aspect ratio, switch object tracking on / off and view the counter indicating how many photos you can still take using the device’s memory or save images to a MicroSD card if inserted. Frame the shot, refocus and reset exposure by touching anywhere on the scene TRY – burst mode to take multiple images in succession, great for a moving subject

Panorama: take pictures across a wide angleTRY – a vertical panorama rather than the traditional horizontal, or getting yourself into a group shot

Bokeh mode: tap the object you want in focus, hold steady while the EKTRA takes two shots in quick succession to create a soft focus backgroundTRY – get in close, the closer you are to the subject the more dramatic the effect will be. Once processed, use the slider bar to adjust the amount of blur to your desired effect

Night mode: capture in low light conditionsTRY – things look different in the dark so scout your location in advance to familiarise yourself with the ideal set up. That way you will have more time during the magic hour at sunset for example

Sports: fast moving objects, people or animalsTRY – focus the action on the middle of the image to help the camera with focusing, but also give leave room for the action to go towards

The KODAK EKTRA Smartphone captures incredible shots at low lit music venues

Use the scene selection wheel to choose your mode, spin and feel the haptic touch indicator, and tap to enlarge the wheel.

Reviewers Guide

Macro Mode: perfect for close-upsTRY – with close-up of patterns, make sure they either fill the frame completely so that there are no gaps around the edges, or show the entire pattern with space all around it for maximum effect

Portrait: normally focused on peopleTRY – use a reflector to bounce light back on your subject and fill any unwanted shadows. A white piece of card can be an effective and simple if you don’t have a reflector to hand

Landscape: capturing the beauty of the world around usTRY – find a focal point for your image – a building, tree, silhouette or natural formation - and decide where in the shot it should be placed

HDR: for low light conditions when there is a brighter area in the shot, for example sunlight coming through a windowTRY – avoid images of people in HDR as it will highlight every blemish, instead shoot up at the sky on a day when the cloud formations are particularly impressive

Manual Mode: settings appear across the bottom of the screen to adjust Shutter speed, ISO, Focal Length, White Balance and Exposure value to your required composition. Tap the icons to make changes to these settings and see the impact live on the device. Use the reset button to undo any changes you are unhappy withTRY – a longer shutter speed to capture motion blur, pan or rotate with a slow shutter speed for surreal effectsNOTE – the Aperture icon is shaded out as it is set at 2.0 which is the size of the aperture for the sensor on the device

Video and Super 8Choose the separate Super 8 App to apply nostalgic effects and vignettes onto new or existing stills and video footage. A range of filters, like the EKTACHROME Film, KODAKCHROME Film and Black & White effect, are available. Experiment in different lighting conditions for some creative results.

Super 8 is not an effect for a point and shoot situation, have some direction and thought before you begin filming to ensure you maximise the effect

Video Mode: tap the scene selection wheel within video mode to reveal the settings that can be adjusted at the top of the screen. Turn the flash off or keep it on in torch mode to light your scene, choose to shoot in 720P, 1080P or 4K and view the counter indicating the length of the video you can take using the devices memory or saved to a MicroSD card (if inserted). TRY – to capture motion, try shooting from a moving vehicle

BEFORE AFTERReviewers Guide

JADE JACKMAN“As a documentary filmmaker and journalist, the best camera is the one you have on you. You can never fully predict what is going to happen, what you’ll notice and the sources of inspiration around you... the EKTRA becomes the perfect addition to my kit because I know I have a camera, and phone, I can rely on always with me.”

@jadeshamraeff

SUPAL“I’m someone who always has my camera with me. I love that I have full control over an image in a DSLR and the fact that my EKTRA allows me to do that is a bonus being it is so compact. My favorite feature, and one I love playing with, is the bokeh.”
