Honoring the team Employees appreciated with special lunch

March 2 was Employee Appreciation Day. As part of the celebration,

The Glen recognized and gave thanks to its outstanding team.

With nearly 200 employees, The Glen offered lunch to celebrate the hard-working staff and administration. The Glen also honors exceptional employees throughout the year as part of an employee recognition program called GEAUX (Glen Employees Achieving Unsurpassed Excellence).

Do you know a staff member who deserves special recognition? Nominate an employee who stands out at www.theglensystem.org/work-with-us.

Clockwise: Tracy Johnson, Rebecca Brown, Marie Davis; Shelia Mitchell; Sara Wells and Angela James attend Employee Appreciation Day.

Steve Van Noppen and LJ Thomas visit while getting a bite to eat during the event.

Our year started in early February with a prediction. GroundDOG Day began a new tradition at The Glen honoring our community

outreach programs. The ceremony kicked off a new season and let the Glen community know there would be six more weeks of winter. So far, Bentley (who posed as our groundDOG) was correct.

This new event that will become a tradition drew quite a crowd. The residents, 81st Street School students, and even the media attended the GroundDOG Day ceremony. The occasion was an exciting way to highlight The Glen’s community outreach programs, which extend our mission to seniors outside of our community.

Besides the groundDOG and his prediction, what drew most to the event was knowledge – to learn what kind of weather the next few weeks would bring. Would we have six more weeks of winter, or was spring right around the corner?

It’s true that knowledge is power, but we ourselves are our own driving force to stay informed. We are the ones who must reach out and educate ourselves as to what we need to know.

Moving into the next few months, The Glen will kick off two different, but similar series following the thread of knowledge. The first series begins March 20 with the return of the CATS Series. CATS, presented by the Paul and Betty McDonald Foundation, is a creative acronym for events on culture, arts, technology and science. These events are meant to bring in a diverse group of speakers, artists and performers to The Glen. You can learn more and see the full season line-up on Page 5 or at www.theglensystem.org/cats.

Looking ahead, May will be one of the busiest months coming up for The Glen. Throughout the month, and in conjunction with Older Americans Month, The Glen will launch a new series this year appropriately titled, “You Oughta Know”. Three events are planned to cover important topics such as supplemental and long-term insurance policies, learning about dementia, and important things you need to know about retirement living. This series will be interactive and fun, but still very informative. Keep up with all these events and others on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/TheGlenRetirementSystem.

We have a packed line-up on the horizon. Don’t miss out on your chance to be more powerful and make better and more informed decisions with the knowledge you will gain. I’d love to see you at The Glen this spring.

The Fowlers send their loveCouple makes local news for greeting card collection

GroundDOG Day sets traditionKTBS, KSLA and The Shreveport

Times each covered a new tradition at The Glen. This tradition called GroundDOG Day honored each of The Glen’s community outreach programs. GroundDOG Day on Feb. 2 mirrored the Groundhog Day ceremony, but with a Glen twist. Bentley was the GroundDOG and residents, 81st Street School students, volunteers and staff attended to learn Bentley’s prediction.

For more on The Glen’s community outreach programs, go to www.theglensystem.org/community/outreach.

Valentine’s Day brought out the nostalgia

of snail mail and put a spotlight on a couple living at The Glen as they shared their story with KSLA News 12. Barbara and Ray Fowler spoke to KSLA about their impressive greeting card collection.

The Fowlers moved to The Glen about two years ago, bringing the cards with them. What makes this couple unique is how they continue to spread love and encouragement to their friends and family. Watch the Fowlers’ story on The Glen’s Facebook page.

Debbie Cowen stands with Bentley as Gary Warren reads Bentley’s proclamation for GroundDOG Day.

Barbara Fowler spoke to KSLA News 12 about her and her husband’s greeting card collection they have kept throughout the years.

Beginning March 20, The Glen Retirement System will host

eight events to bring a diverse group of scholars, leaders and artists to residents and the Shreveport-Bossier City community.

The series, called CATS: Events on Culture, Arts, Technology and Science was created by The Betty and Paul McDonald Foundation. Each of the events will provide insight and illumination into the critical issues of our time, especially those that relate to Northwest Louisiana.

All CATS events begin at 3 p.m. at The Glen Retirement System. Each event is to the public at no charge; however, seating is limited.

CATS will kick off March 20 with a special performance from the Shreveport Symphony. This trio, featuring musicians from the Shreveport Symphony
