The Mission of the Student Technology Leadership Program (STLP™) is to

advance individual capabilities; to motivate all

students; and to create leadership opportunities

through the use of technology.

Shelby West Middle School Has exceeded the mission expectations

of the STLP

•We submitted 2 Presentations and 2 Projects to fall showscase – a total of 12 individuals – 7 had never participated in STLP prior to this year•We have 66 students currently involved in the West Middle School STL Program motivating all students at West Middle through the Video Yearbook Project, the Hooks and Cable Project, Robotics and Digital Art. •Our youth leaders are helping in the classrooms daily by updating teacher web sites, publishing an electronic newspaper, installing, operating and fixing technology for teachers and students

3. The STLP will participate in multi-age collaboration by forming innovative learning partnerships.

4. The STLP will form learning partnerships among students with different technology skills.

6. The STLP will develop instructional activities which integrates technology and benefits the school and support KETS (Kentucky Education Technology System)

6 STLP Goals

•Student Technology Leaders (STLs) have set up and are currently hosting a School Wide Electronic Newspaper in conjunction with 8th Grade Language Arts. 8th grade student work was selected by publication based on originality and the project duration.

•STLs on the Video Yearbook project have worked as a team to market, advertise and sell their product to school members and other Shelby County residents.

•STLs interacted with Cutting Edge Research, Incorporated to developed a survey instrument to capture the technology needs of Shelby West Middle School. Several STL’s participated on the Hooks and Cables project to ensure they meet both the needs of Shelby West Middle School and the deadlines for Fall Showcase as well as submission of the

Technology Plan to the Board of Education.

Goal 1The STLP will develop activities which

enhance the academic, social and emotional growth of the student.

•West Middles STLs reflect the diversity of school population – we have 18 Hispanic, 16 African Americans 38 Caucasians.

•West Middle STLs participated in the MORE Poster Content; our STL’s are members of TAG and take leadership roles in the classroom by leading in technology training and assuming project leadership positions.

•Our Video Yearbook STLs are living awareness/entrepreneurial opportunities by marketing, advertising and selling the first ever Digital Yearbook in a Shelby County School.

Goal 2

The STLP will provide leadership opportunities for all students.

STLs, coaches and parent volunteers interacted with Cutting Edge Research, Incorporated to develop a survey instrument to capture the technology needs of Shelby West Middle School. Several STL’s participated on the Hooks and Cables project to ensure they met both the needs of Shelby West Middle School and the deadlines for Fall Showcase as well as submission of

the Technology Plan to the Board of Education. This effort involved all staff members, all grade levels, and the a global research company.

Goal 3

The STLP will participate in multi-age collaboration by forming innovative

learning partnerships.

•Our STLs learned how to interface the schools electronic microscope with a laptop and interface them with a projector to display organisms and cell structures to an entire science classroom.

•STL on the Video Yearbook project recruited and trained the three other members of the project team and shared her technological expertise with them in order to produce and market the product.

•Our lead Robotics team member has assumed the project management role to teach the other STLs interested in Robotics how to program the robot, and maneuver it to successfully perform the required tasks for competition.

Goal 4

The STLP will form learning partnerships among students with

different technology skills.

•STLs, coaches and parent volunteers interacted with Cutting Edge Research, Incorporated to develop a survey instrument to capture the technology needs of Shelby West Middle School. Several STL’s participated on the Hooks and Cables project to ensure they met both the needs of Shelby West Middle School and the deadlines for Fall Showcase as well as submission of the Technology Plan to the Board of Education. This effort involved all staff members, all grade levels, and the a global research company.•Animal Rescue 911 STL’s are working with the local human society to help “get the word out” concerning their reduced rates on vaccinations, spay and neutering program and other services they offer in Shelby County. This will be an on-going effort for the future.

The STLP will develop activities which benefit communities.

•Our STLP Coach, Parent Volunteers, and Hooks and Cables project team members are currently revising their school wide technology survey/needs assessment to reflect the preliminary results of the first survey. The first survey results have been included in our school’s technology plan which we submitted to the board of education for consideration in allocating available district technology dollars. The on-line version of the technology needs assessment will positively position West Middle for District Technology dollars next year and in years to come. This project directly supports our schools consolidated plan.

• Member went from classroom to classroom assisting the yearbook staff with needed pictures for Score 4, the School “paper” yearbook as well as the video yearbook.

•Members installed computer speakers in every classroom allowing teachers to interface their PC with the television and actual “hear” what was being displayed – great addition to classroom curriculum!!!

•Our Mouse patrol installed all the computer speakers in every classroom at the request of our principal.

What process was used to recruit students?

How does your school encourage all students interested to join?

At the beginning of the school year, posters were placed around our school inviting students to join STLP. If students were interested, they were invited to come to our district STLP meeting. Once the students attended this meeting and turned in information about themselves, the students were invited to the first STLP meeting. After the first few meetings a personalized letter along with STLP workshops and other information, was sent home with each student inviting participation from the interested student and parents who might be able to volunteer at our events and activities.

Students are encouraged by STLP students, and our faculty and staff. Announcements are made at the beginning of the year and meetings are held for interested students and parents to discuss STLP goals and activities for the year...and students observe our activities.

Absolutely. Our students are diverse in ethnicity, personalities and educational

levels. No one is turned away if they are interested in participating in STLP.

How does the community know about your STLP?

The community is aware of our program from the newspaper articles published by the Sentinel News, and by word of mouth from our students and parents. AND, our projects are posted on the SWMS web page!

The community knows about us. We had 8 digital art pieces entered and displayed at the Shelby County Extension Office and one of our members won the MORE Poster Contest!!

Activities & Projects that…

•Our Web Master has taught others to design web sites.

•Our more experienced Robotics members are showing the newer members how to design, and program the robots.

•Members are helping other students develop PowerPoint projects for classroom projects.

• Members are showing students how to take on-line quizzes and submit them for grades via the web.

•Member are showing other members how to put produce videos and host them as well as how to burn CD’s and DVD’s.

•Our Mouse patrol installed all the computer speakers in every classroom at the request of our principal.

•Our Video Stringers and Video Yearbook Team members have taken pictures and videos of all the school activities, Step Club, sporting events and assemblies

•Hooks and Cables is revising the Technology questionnaire and developing an on-line version to make it more user friendly and accessible.


•Members have developed PowerPoint presentations for teachers to use in the classroom

•Members have learned to interface the electron microscope with the projector and a laptop and assisted his teacher in displaying cells and organisms during their unit on Cells – great learning visual!!!

Our Plans for the FutureWe have lots to do. We are currently marketing and selling our advanced copies of our video yearbook project. We have 4 teams preparing for intramural Robotics competition in which one team will advance to the State level. We are also conducting a digital art contest to determine which pieces will advance to state competition.

Our Hooks and Cables project is currently revising their school wide technology survey/needs assessment to reflect the preliminary results of the first survey. The first survey results have been included in our school’s technology plan which we submitted to the board of education for consideration in allocating available district technology dollars. The on-line version of the technology needs assessment will positively position West Middle for District Technology dollars next year and in years to come.

Both Hooks and Cables and the Video Yearbook projects are preparing for state competition as is our Animal Rescue 911 presenters. Animal Rescue 911 STL’s are working with the local human society to help “get the word out” concerning their reduced rates on vaccinations, spay and neutering program and other services they offer in Shelby County. This will be an on-going effort for the future.

Members are investigating the technology requirements of our teachers, researching those technologies, and then we plan to purchase and implementation them in the classroom if applicable and funding is available.

Student participation at local, district, state, national level

and/or public forum as a representative of STLP

This year West Middle sent 2 presentations, 2 projects, one cyber reporter and one engineer to fall showcase. One presentation and 2 projects scored high enough to go onto state competition. Our district also hosts a community wide STLP Showcase and all those members we participated in Fall Showcase are also presenting at district. Our district also sponsors a Digital Art Show and West sent 8 pieces to the show.
