increasing volumes of data and demands for more efficient use of financial and it resources means today’s

networking professionals are being asked to deliver services that are not only ‘always on’ but that respond with

agility to rapidly changing business needs.

these increasingly complex networks demand;

• Efficientmanagementofavirtualizedinfrastructurethroughinvestmentinvirtualizationmanagementsoftware.

• ExcellentITprocesscontrolthroughimplementationofbestpracticeframeworkssuchasITIL.

• Ahighly integratedapproach to all aspectof networkmanagement –getting themostout of your

data center infrastructure management (dCiM) and network management (NMS) software.

investment in virtualisation from the data center to the

desktop and enhancement of in-house capability with

cloud based services can increase flexibility and efficiency,

but at the same time establishes a more fluid and less

tangible operational environment. this environment

requires excellent process control and clear visibility of

network assets and their workload to give it professionals

the control that is essential to run an efficient enterprise

network or data center.

While most elements of the network can be managed in

this way, there has been one element of the network that

has lagged behind in terms of process automation and

network visibility – the physical layer. often consisting of

many thousands of individual, cables, connectors and

connections, this physical layer can remain a ‘blind spot’

that, with better visibility, could reveal vital information

key to:

1. Higher availability through increased automation,

improved diagnostics and reduced downtime.

2. Reduced oPeX through more efficient change

management, asset provisioning and utilization.

3. improved itiL process efficiency through 100%

accurate real time physical location information that

can prove invaluable to security and compliance.

4. Full integration of the physical layer with the virtual world

within existing nmS and dcim software to enhance

visibility and control of the whole network.

te’s managed connectivity solution, with its infrastructure

configuration manager (icm) software and a choice of

two connectivity hardware technologies, delivers full

knowledge and visibility of the physical layer. icm can be

seamlessly integrated into your existing network

management software to give full control and visibility

of the complete network –

it’s time to truly: Know Your Network.

te’s managed connectivity solution

enables higher network availability,

while lowering network costs, by

integrating full visibility of the

physical layer into existing network

management applications – all

the way from the data center to

the desktop.

Most Network

Management solutions

are primarily designed to

manage Layers 2 to 7.

Deploying a managed

connectivity solution

brings real-time visibility

of Layer 1, the physical

layer, into existing DCIM

and NMS applications.

Allowing you to truly:

Know Your Network.

Many of the features of a managed connectivity

solution that raise availability also play a key role in

reducing operating costs by improving the efficiency of

moves, adds and changes and ensuring downtime is

minimized.

in addition to these benefits, network utilisation can be

improved as the accurate connection database can

help identify unused active ports and re-provision them

to where additional capacity is needed, delaying the

need for further investment.

the physical layer can often be the cause of network

downtime, making rapid physical fault location and

diagnosis an essential part of a comprehensive

network uptime strategy. te’s managed connectivity

solutionautomaticallymaintainsadatabaseof100%

accurate connection information and can also provide

crucial information on the data carrying capacity of

the links between those connections.

if a network asset fails, an accurate database of

the physical connections can help locate the real

world, physical location of that asset in a virtualised

environment, speeding up the recovery work.

the availability of new services is also improved

through the remote, automated reporting of

connectivityutilization.Witharealtime,integrated

view of server capacity and connection capacity, the

need for an engineer visit to audit capacity prior to

provisioning is eliminated.

in all cases, the human element of record keeping is

kept to a minimum, not only improving MttR but also

enhancing security.

data center space is expensive. New data center build and expansion is complicated and resource intensive. to make

for collocation data center owners and providers of cloud based data center services, one of the biggest concerns

your customers have is the security and location of their critical data. by integrating te’s managed connectivity into

your data center physical structure, you now have ‘real time’ physical data on the connections between servers that

can be mapped to their physical location. this information can be used to assure customers of the physical location

of their data, aid compliance with international data storage regulations and provide security alerts should any

unauthorizedphysicalconnectionsoccur.

the infrastructure Configuration Manager sits at the heart

of the managed connectivity system, linking connectivity

information generated by the supporting hardware

technologies to third party network management

applications. the user experience is via a ‘drag & drop’

graphical user interface and the real-time connectivity

data is stored in the iCM database. the iCM also contains

the management agents necessary to collect the data

from the choice of hardware technologies and to

communicate control instructions to the hardware.

iCM can be used as a self contained stand alone physical

layer management application if desired. in this

configuration, iCM will deliver documentation of your

network connections and a complete application for

managingWorkorders, Network Topology, Level 2

discovery, reporting and alarms. however, to get the

most from your managed connectivity solution and your

existing NMS and dCiM investments, iCM contains on

open application Programming interface (aPi).

along with the associated software development kit, this

open aPi can deliver two-way, seamless integration with

your network management software and opens up a

whole range of value add applications that can only be

delivered by linking physical layer data into your network

management environment.
