Notes from January 2nd PD Day
Interlibrary Loan Procedures - Needs ProcessingAs a program we must each be diligent in keeping up with these requests so please take a look at your daily schedules and make interlibrary loan a part of your daily work so that we can provide timely resources to students across the district and helping us to meet the Parkway Mission of meeting the needs of ALL Parkway students regardless of the building that they are in.Jim has done a really good job of creating step-by-step procedures for the entire process. If you have questions, please contact him and he will help you work through your sticking points. https://sites.google.com/site/faqofdestiny/interlibrary-loan
Titlewave Curriculum TagsThanks to Gina we had a nice overview of what Titlewave Curriculum Tags can do for creating list to share with teachers and build the collection. To see the screenshot handout click here. While in Titlewave you can also see suggested items for Common Core strands, such as informational text. They can be found by logging into your account and then clicking For the Library, then Common Core State Standards. Teachers can search by curriculum tags as well by utilizing the Universal Search feature. Be sure to scroll down the page to find the ribbon that contains tags. Also note that Universal Search is still in beta, meaning that it is improving daily and the curriculum tags are being applied to the newest items first.
Other items that you will be hearing more about in the very near future:● Book Bid is currently being worked on to select a jobber for the next three years● Summer development opportunities● Role of library in classroom reading programs

ISTE Standards in Our SettingThe Coaching StandardsThe second standard, Teaching, Learning, and Assessment will assist teachers in using
technology effectively for assessing student learning, differentiating instruction, and
providing rigorous, relevant, and engaging learning experiences for all students . This
sounds a lot like our Learning Principles.
The checklist below is a guide for coaches to be able to assist teachers with
leveraging technology to engage students and develop digital age skills:
A. Coach teachers in and model design and implementation of technology-
enhanced learning experiences addressing content standards and student
technology standards

enhanced learning experiences using a variety of research-based, learner-
centered instructional strategies and assessment tools to address the diverse
needs and interests of all students
C. Coach teachers in and model engagement of students in local and global
interdisciplinary units in which technology helps students assume
professional roles, research real-world problems, collaborate with others,
and produce products that are meaningful and useful to a wide audience
D. Coach teachers in and model design and implementation of technology-
enhanced learning experiences emphasizing creativity, higher-order thinking
skills and processes, and mental habits of mind (e.g., critical thinking,
metacognition, and self-regulation)
E. Coach teachers in and model design and implementation of technology-
enhanced learning experiences using differentiation, including adjusting
content, process, product, and learning environment based upon student
readiness levels, learning styles, interests, and personal goals

in instructional design when planning technology-enhanced learning
experiences
G. Coach teachers in and model effective use of technology tools and resources

create flash cards through Google Spreadsheets, but now you can use Flippity
to create Jeopardy-style game boards through Google Spreadsheets. The
video created by Richard Byrne demonstrates how to use Flippity to create a
Jeopardy-style game board.

EdcampSTL An Unconference - February 7, 2015!
At an UNconference, the agenda is created by the attendees at the beginning of the meeting. Anyone who wants to initiate a discussion on a topic can claim a time and a space. UNconferences typically feature open discussions rather than having a single speakers at the front of the room lecturing, although any format is permitted. This form of conference is particularly useful when the attendees generally have a high level of expertise or knowledge in the field the conference convenes to discuss, unlocking the creative genius of the attendees so that all may learn and be inspired! http://www.edcampstl.org/

School Librarians Transform Learning
AASL Hotlinks - January 15
The question is how do librarians transform learning in the digital age? While
students have a tablets, Chromebooks, or smartphones with them at any given time,
they still visit libraries for various reasons. These reasons include access to digital
products, services, and guidance.
The librarian of today plays a unique role in digital information management,
because the physical space is an ever changing community resource where patrons
come to use products. Those products include digital devices, wireless access, mobile
printing, creation/production tools, and eBooks. The librarians are managing device
acquisition, acquiring tools for best practice in learning, and obtaining electronic
media and content to meet curriculum needs.
There is a quite a variety of digital library services being offered as well. Librarians
co-plan and teach lessons that focus on evaluation of sources/information, provide
students with virtual reference services (via email or chat), assist users with finding
relevant materials, participate with teachers in professional learning communities,
provide support for media and technology use, train faculty on how to locate and
evaluate digital content, respond to curriculum needs with up-to-date digital
materials, and maintain relationships to maximize availability of resources.
Librarians are also ensuring that patrons have the best chance to succeed by
providing guidance in information and media literacy. Information online is often
overwhelming and locating credible sources is difficult, therefore librarians offer
support by teaching skills to select, evaluate, and use information appropriately and
effectively.
Librarians are providing equitable physical and intellectual access to the resources
and tools required for learning in a welcoming, stimulating, and safe environment.
Check out the two infographics which provide great talking points to parents,
teachers, and administrators.

How to Be an Independent Learner
In the era of BYOD and technology information it is probably worth the time to share with students how to be an independent learner. It is essential for preparing them for the future and allows them to adapt their time and effort to learning new insights and techniques.

New Teen Series @STLC St. Louis County Library will begin a new program series in January designed to help teens gain skills to transition to adulthood. The series will explore topics such as budgeting, interview tips, how to buy your first car and more. A full program schedule is available here.

Thought for the New Year
"We spend January 1 walking
through our lives, room by
room, drawing up a list of work
to be done, cracks to be
patched. Maybe this year, to
balance the list, we ought to
walk through the rooms of our
lives...not looking for flaws, but
for potential."
- Ellen Goodman
