You are invited to participate in the
“Knock on Wood” Arts Fest
(29 July – 2 August 2013)
where the Woodridge Schools will be opening their doors to schools in the Eastern Cape
and Garden Route regions for a festival encompassing music, visual art and creative writing.
This bi-annual event aims to:
• Provide exposure to budding young artists in a non-threatening and
stimulating environment,
• Foster a general awareness and appreciation of the arts,
• Stimulate youthful artistic self-expression,
• Foster interaction between schools on a cultural level.

FESTIVAL INFORMATION
1. Festival Format
A vibrant evening programme will be hosted concurrently with the festival in which esteemed
professional performers will grace us with their presence in concerts and/or other kinds of
performances.
Lunches will be available on a daily basis on the Woodridge Campus, but pre-booking is
essential for both participants and adults.
2. Overview of Categories
The “Knock on Wood” Arts Fest facilitates participation on a primary and
secondary school level in the following categories:

What can you expect?
An opportunity to perform in the company of fellow artists and be judged by kind
adjudicators who will “discreetly” provide you with helpful feedback and tips!
Each participant in this festival will receive an adjudicator’s report and a certificate
indicating their level of proficiency. Furthermore, there will also be a competitive
element in that sectional prize winners will be announced for the first three places
in the different age groups of the different categories.

• 4.1 Adjudication will be done by respected professionals.
• 4.2 Certificates will be awarded for the following levels of achievement:
Double gold: 90 – 100%
Gold: 80 – 89%
Silver: 70 – 79%
Bronze: 69% and below

• The adjudicator’s decision is final and no discussion will be entered into regarding
certificates and awards.
• Adjudicators may disqualify participants if they do not adhere to all the Arts Fest rules
and regulations.
• Awards will be made in all sections as indicated in the tables above.
5. Organising Committee
• It is the responsibility of the participants (or their teachers) to inform the
Organising Committee of any change of address, contact details or other entry
details prior to the publication of the entrant list on 8 July 2013. No changes will
be made after that.
• Participating schools must ensure that the current and correct details of the
school, teacher and participants are supplied. The Organising Committee takes
no responsibility for incorrect or altered information which has not been disclosed
and this might lead to disqualification.
• The Organising Committee takes no responsibility for entries that are late due to
the slow postal service or problems with the online registration process if the
participant (or responsible teacher) did not double check entries and entry details.
• Personal details of participants will be used for administrative purposes and not
for public consumption or publication.
• The Organising Committee reserves the right to cancel the Festival at any stage
if deemed necessary due to circumstances that could not be prevented.
• The Organising Committee has the right to alter the age category of the
Participant if it is established that the Participant has been entered into the
incorrect category.

6. Entry details
6.1 Registration of Affiliates & Payment Reference Number
• All participating schools have to AFFILIATE as a member of the Knock on Wood Arts
Fest.
• Affiliation is free of charge.
• After affiliation, a payment reference number will be generated for each school and
this must be used in all communication with the organising committee or when
making payments.
• The period for affiliation is from 5 April to 30 April.
• Affiliation and Entries must preferably be done ELECTRONICALLY on the
Woodridge Website at www.woodridge.co.za/knockonwoodartsfest/2013
• Affiliates that do not have internet access must please contact the Administrative
Secretary so that a Payment Reference Number can be issued.

• Any questions not covered by these Rules must be referred to the respective section
co-ordinators on the Organising Committee.
6.2 Entry Fees & Number of Entries
• Each participant may be entered for a maximum of TWO sections per category.
• Participants may enter works into different categories.
• Only THREE entrants PER SECTION (per age group) will be allowed PER
SCHOOL.
• Other meal options will be available at the Woodridge Coffee Shop, as well as at the
Tuck Shop.
• If an entrant is required to participate on more than one day (which will be apparent
after the publication of the final programme) and wants to book more than one lunch
(as specified above), a period of lunch bookings will be allowed via the Administrative
Assistant, Mrs Marianne Crane. The final order date is 19 July 2013.
6.3 Date of Birth
Entries will only be processed if they include the participant’s date of birth.
Ages to be determined by their age on the 31st of December 2013:

6.4 Electronic Entries
• After the affiliation process is completed the period for REGISTRATION of
ENTRANTS will begin on 1 June ending on 17 June. No late entries will be
accepted.
• Entry fees are not refundable under any circumstances.
• No entries will be processed if entry fees are outstanding.
• Faxed entries will only be accepted if they are accompanied by proof of payment and
the payment reference number is provided.
• Teachers responsible for entries at each affiliated school are advised to use the
Summary of Entries form to help with the calculation of fees (Addendum C).
• The Electronic Entry Form will be made available on the Woodridge Website on 1
June 2013, at: www.woodridge.co.za/knockonwoodartsfest/2013
• Wherever possible, please make use of the electronic method. This will ensure that
spelling and item mistakes will be kept to a minimum.
• The Knock on Wood Arts Fest cannot be held responsible for incorrect information on
the entry forms.
6.5 Posted or Faxed Entries
In case of posted or faxed entries, an entry form (pdf) is available for download on the

6.6 Banking Details for Payments

• No entries will be processed unless the correct payments were made by the affiliated
school.
• All payments must be referenced using the unique Payment Reference Number that
was generated during the affiliation process.
• Affiliates can make as many payments as they like, as long as they adhere to the
prescribed deadlines.

6.7 Details on Entry Forms
• All information on the electronic forms must be completed.
• The information on hand-written entries must be legible and written in block capitals.
This will facilitate correct data capturing.
• Verify details, especially age, category and section numbers and spelling of the
name, as it should appear on the Festival Certificate.
• Ensure that participants are enrolled in the correct categories and sections.
Teachers will be held responsible for supplying accurate details, as incorrect
information may lead to the disqualification of the participant.
6.8 Withdrawal of Participants
• Any participants withdrawing from the Festival will forfeit the entry fee. Once entry
fees have been processed, they can, under no circumstances, be refunded.
• If a participant withdraws, he/she cannot be replaced by another participant –
certificates are pre-printed and therefore no name changes can be made.
• Should a cancellation be necessary, please inform the Administrative Assistant
without delay.

7. Programme
• No draft programme will be supplied. A list of entries will be emailed to affiliates, for
correction and verification, on or before Monday, 8 July 2013.
• For your convenience, this list will also be made available on the internet at the
following address: www.woodridge.co.za/knockonwoodartsfest/2013
• All corrections must reach the Administrative Secretary no later than Thursday, 11
July 2013

• The final programme will be available on the Woodridge Website on Monday, 15
July 2013.
• Please note that the organisers cannot accommodate time or date clashes with extra
mural activities, due to organisational complexities. Should there be any problems,
please discuss this with the discipline co-ordinator.
• While the organisers will do their utmost to ensure the smooth running of each
discipline, there are factors beyond their control which may affect the final
programme. Should any changes be unavoidable, we will, wherever possible, notify
affiliates.
8. Venues
• All performances will take place on the Woodridge College and Preparatory
School Campus, situated just off the old Van Stadens Pass Road, Witteklip,
Thornhill.
• The School Halls, Lecture Theatre and Woodpecker Club House will be used for
the different sections.
• A map of the Woodridge Campus will be made available with the publication of
the final programme.
9. Registration (during the event)
• All participants must register 30 minutes prior their performance (except for the non-
performance entries).

• Registration tables will be situated in the foyers of each of the venues.
10. Language and dress code
• No prejudicial material or derogatory language will be allowed during any of the
performances or entries and may lead to disqualification.
• Please ensure that the performance contents are appropriate and age-related.
• It is suggested that participants wear their school uniforms for performances.
11. Disqualification
To avoid disqualification, participants should comply with all the Festival rules. A participant
will be disqualified if he/she:
• Fails to arrive at the correct venue on the correct date and time for the section he/she
was entered for.
• Plays a piece that is not representative of the chosen section.
• Does not have the original scores or music available on site on the day of the
performance and/or forgets to submit a clear copy of the works to be performed.
• When there is clear evidence of plagiarism or the authenticity of the works are in
question.

CATEGORY INFORMATION
Category 1: Instrumental Music (Primary and Secondary
Schools)
GENERAL AND SPECIFIC RULES
The age groups in which entrants can participate and the different sections, are listed below:
GENERAL RULES PERTAINING TO CATEGORY 1 (INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC).
• No work may be presented in more than one section.
• A participant may only enter ONE PIECE PER SECTION (twice per category) per
age category, except in the music category where a participant may enter for
different musical instruments.
• The duration of each work must be accurately timed and indicated on the entry form. This information is essential when compiling the programme.
• Each school may enter no more than THREE pupils per SECTION per AGE GROUP.

• When sheet music is used, participants must have the originals on at the Arts Fest. Participants will personally be held responsible for copyright infringements and resulting fines in case SAMRO representatives find them not to be in possession of the original scores.
• There is no section for duos, trios and larger ensembles.
• No photocopies will be made at the venue. In case of emergency, participants will pay R5 per photocopied page.
• ONE complete photocopy of the participant’s chosen piece/s must be presented to the section administrator at least 30 minutes before the start of the section for use by the adjudicator.
• Participants are not allowed to present OWN compositions in any of the sections. Only published works will be acceptable – no handwritten scores or chord symbols.
• The UNISA, Trinity Guildhall and ABRSM syllabi should be used as a guide.
• Participants should avoid REPEATS, but Da Capo’s must be observed.
• No contemporary or light music will be allowed. Participants should select works from the specific stylistic periods.
• Where applicable, participants must provide their own accompanists and/or page turners.
• Once a section is in progress, participants and audience members will not be allowed to leave the venue until the next formal break.
• Participants are expected to be present at the end of each section for the prize giving.
• Adjudicators will make general comments about each section and award the trophies for the sectional winners at the end of each section.
• Certificates and performance reports will be available from section administrators ONLY after the sectional prize giving.
• Only acoustic accompaniments will be allowed.
• There are limited on-site warm-up facilities available.
• A music stand will be provided in each performance venue.

SUB-CATEGORY WIN: WIND INSTRUMENTS
• Pieces may be performed on any of the following woodwind instruments:
o Flute
o Clarinet
o Saxophone
o Oboe
o Bassoon
o Recorder
o Trumpet
o Trombone
o Horn
• Pupils are responsible for tuning their own instruments and teachers are not allowed
to do this for participants whilst on stage.

Category 2: Vocal Music (Primary and Secondary Schools)
• Repertoire allowed: Western classical compositions & songs from stage musicals –
but not jazz or rock and pop.
• NO backing tracks and microphones allowed.
• Accompaniment must be acoustic in nature.
• Pieces must be from external examination syllabi – NOT from contemporary syllabi
examinations such as Rockschool, Rock/Pop –The UNISA, Trinity Guildhall and
ABRSM syllabi should be used as a guide.
• Songs must be performed from memory.
• Participants are not allowed to present OWN compositions in any of the sections.
Only published works will be acceptable – no handwritten scores or chord symbols.
• One a section is in progress, participants and audience members will not be allowed
to leave the venue until the next formal break.

• Drawings may not be worked on during the course of the Arts Fest.
• Drawings must be completed in advance and submitted for adjudication before or
on the stipulated date.

• This discipline will be adjudicated according to their ability and age. Primary school
and Secondary School category winners will be announced.
• Participants may only submit work that has been created with the intention of entering
into the Knock on Wood Arts Fest. Works must have been created in 2013.
• A proof of ownership form (Addendum A) needs to be attached at the back of each
individual artwork and no adjudication will take place without this. The following
information must be filled in on this form:
o Name and surname of participant (as it should appear on the certificate).
o Name of school or affiliated body.
o Age group
o Section number
o School Reference number
o Entry number of the participant
o Declaration of the teacher that the artwork is original.
• Only artworks of participants, whose names are printed on the programme, will be
accepted for adjudication. If a participant’s name does not appear in the programme,
please contact the Administrative Assistant.
• Artworks and/or drawings may only be entered once.
• Artworks and/or drawings kept by the organising committee at the risk of the
participant.
• The organising committee reserves the right to display artwork during the week in
which the performance arts takes place.
• Artworks may be collected after adjudication on the date stipulated above.
• No late entries will be accepted.
• Artwork may only be collected by affiliate or designated persons with a written
authorisation from the affiliated school.

PLEASE NOTE: Framed artwork under glass, will not be accepted.
SUB-CATEGORY PVA: PRIMARY SCHOOL VISUAL ARTS
• Participants in this sub-category have the option to choose either a painting or a
drawing or both.
• Drawings may be completed in any ONE of the following mediums: soft chalk
pastels, charcoal, pen, pencil, graphite or any other “traditional” drawing medium.
• Participants must choose to follow one of the following themes for their
compositions:
o Self-portrait (An artwork depicting the “self”, limited to the head and
shoulders)
o Jewels of Nature (Images of the beauty of nature)
o Black and White (A subject of the participant’s choosing, executed in only
black and white)
o Fragments (An image done in the style of the cubists)
o Under a blue sky (Landscape)

(Section A) – Academic Drawing
Theme: Transition
This section pertains to observational, figurative or representational drawing that centres
around the creation of three-dimensional form, tonal contrast, illusion of depth, correct use of
proportion, sound composition, use of line and general technical excellence. Participants
may choose to interpret the theme “Transition” as they see fit, but they must choose only
ONE MEDIUM to complete this drawing, i.e., charcoal, pen, pencil, graphite or any
“traditional” drawing medium.
Inspiration can be sought through the study of the drawings by (although not a prescribed
instruction):
• Ingres
• Jacque Louis David
• Cleo Wilkinson
• Antonio Lopez Garcia
(Section B) – Experimental Drawing
Theme: My Music
The emphasis in this section is the individualistic expression of emotion that pertains to the
theme “My Music” and the use of innovative media. Participants are encouraged to explore
and experiment with the different types of traditional and non-traditional drawing media and
explore the theme “My Music” as freely as possible. The submitted drawings will be
assessed in terms of their emotive expression of content and/or message that pertains to the
theme. Adjudicators will look at how the participants have incorporated or used their chosen
media according to their ability to create an interesting composition, tonal contrast, use of
mark-making and use of line.
Inspiration can be sought through the study of drawings by artists such as (although not a
prescribed instruction):
• Marlene Dumas
• William Kentridge
• Diane Victor – Smoke drawings
• Willem De Kooning
• Wassily Kandinsky
• Helen Sebidi

Category 4: Creative Writing
• This discipline will be adjudicated according to their ability and age. High School
category winners will be announced.
• The authenticity of submitted poems must be verified by the representative teacher.
• Participants may only submit work that has been created with the intention of
entering the Knock on Wood Arts Fest.
• A prescribed form (Addendum B) needs to be attached to each individual entry. The
following information must be filled in on this form:
o Name and surname of participant (as it should appear on the certificate)
o Name of school or affiliated body
o Age group
o Section number
o School Reference number
o Entry number of the participant
o Declaration of the teacher that the poem is original
Poems must be completed in advance and submitted for adjudication before or on the
stipulated date.
Submission Date: 19 July 2013 (8:00AM – 4:30PM)
Collection of entries and certificates:
2 August 2013 (2PM – 5PM)

• The prescribed form is available in Addendum B. This form must be attached to the
back of the poem as no adjudication will take place without this.
• Only poems of participants, whose names are printed on the programme, will be
accepted for adjudication. If a participant’s name does not appear in the programme,
please contact the Administrative Assistant.
• Poems may only be entered once.
• Poems will be kept by the organising committee at the risk of the participant.
• Poems and certificates may be collected after adjudication on the date stipulated
above.
• No late entries will be accepted.
• Winning entries will be published in the Arts Fest Programme.
(Section A) – Poetry Writing
• The poem must be the original work of the participant.
• The poem must not exceed 42 lines, or be less than 8 lines.
• The poem can be on any subject and each poem must be given an appropriate title.
• Entries with inappropriate language or inappropriate material will be disqualified.
• Adjudication will be based on the following criteria:
o Beauty, power, education or entertainment
o Message and interest
o Technical excellence
o Form and Flow
o Choice of words and readability
o Overall impact
o Originality
o Polish and expertise
