Columbian Report

After a very busy December, with bookings and lounge

business being very good, January and February are a little

below last year for rentals. We paid our real estate taxes

at the beginning of January and have enough left over in

the treasury to buy a cup of coffee. Projects that are being

looked at for the coming year are striping the parking lot,

painting the lounge, painting the trim in the game room

and doing some landscaping. Also we will be starting our

raffle to support the Catholic schools, Council 246 and the

Columbian, we need your support. Thanks to Dave, Rick,

Dick and Gus who are running the Columbian while I am

away.

Thanks

Ken Davis, Columbian President

a good thing going.

Prayers...

Please keep in your hearts and prayers the many Brother Knights and their family members who are ailing and recovering.

Chaplain’s Message

On February 11 we celebrate the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. This is the date that Mary appeared to a

young, poor, sickly uneducated girl in a grotto in Lourdes France in 1858. The girl was Bernadette Soubirous.

Bernadette, at the sixteenth apparition asked the "Lady", "Madamoiselle, would you be so kind as to tell me

who you are, if you please"? The Lady answered "Que soy era Immaculada Concepciou." Meaning, I am the

Immaculate Conception. Only four years before Pope Pius IX declared the dogma that Mary was the

Immaculate Conception. There is much more about this event that can be told. But I would like to mention

that over six million souls visit Lourdes each year and hundreds of miracles have taken place.

When I was a youngster in grade school we learned our lessons from the Baltimore Catechism. It was the rote system and

by golly I still remember many of questions and answers. One such question was, what is a sacrament?. The answer was, a

sacrament is an outward sign instituted by Christ to give grace. But, what is grace? It is the divine assistance given to us by

the Holy Spirit to advance our relationship with God. When we receive a sacrament we receive God's grace in abundance.

There are seven sacraments, Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Matrimony, Anointing of the sick, Holy Orders and

Reconciliation. In 1274 St. Thomas Acquinas formally listed the seven sacraments. Prior to that date the Church listed 30

sacraments which included the sacramentals. The Council of Trent in 1439 confirmed St. Thomas's number.

Each coming month I plan to share something special about each sacrament. Next month we will start with with the

sacrament of Baptism.

"Our Lady of Lourdes pray for us"

God bless us all

Being open to having children is just as important to

being pro-life as is the opposition to abortion. Much

of Europe and the western world is suffering from a

birth dearth because of selfishness that puts material-

ism and career advancement ahead of having children.

Monsignor Carlo Liberati, Archbishop Emeritus of Pompeii, said that

Islam will soon become Europe’s main religion because the Muslims

are having children and we are not. The time has come to throw out

contraceptives and stop the rush to cultural suicide.

God’s instruction to the human race was to increase and multiply, and

to fill the earth and subdue it. Do we think that He was wrong and

could not provide for His children?

REWIND ---“Back in the Day!”

It’s that time of the year when you are looking for something to do. It happens every winter. So why not clean up the closets and those dresser drawers that you have not looked in for years. You never know what you will find. Maybe it’s that hidden money you forgot you hid, or maybe it’s something you were looking for but now it’s too late because you bought a replace-ment. Maybe it’s some old pictures, or in most cases it’s old cloths that don’t fit any-more and it’s time to put them in a bag and drop them off at our new Used Clothing Drop Off Shed that is located in our parking lot. Lucky enough and just in time for this edi-tion of REWIND we had several members drop off some pictures from “Back in the Day”. Rather than give you the answers of who is in the pictures I thought it would be fun for you to figure out. If you need help just give me a call and I’ll provide you with the answers. They say a picture is worth a 1000 words. So enjoy the pictures and I hope I will be hearing from you for next month’s article. If you need any help I can stop by and make a copy of your pictures.

I’m looking forward to the next REWIND---“Back in the Day” story. Please provide your pic-tures by 2/13/2017 so I can in-clude it in our March issue.

Volunteers Always Needed As I stated back in my September message, our biggest

and longest standing fundraiser BINGO on Wednesday

nights continues to struggle finding enough volunteers to

support the weekly event. With members passing, others

dealing with health issues and members going south dur-

ing the winter months, we need more support to keep

this revenue raising activity operating. Below find a list of

duties that require support every week:

· Bingo Preparation · Games

· Selling · Clean Up

· Money

To learn more about the BINGO operations, please show

up at 5:30 pm to be assigned a duty. Some duties last an

hour, some two hours and others lasting the entire night

about four hours. If you are a new member, this is a great

way to start your fraternal mission and meet other mem-

bers of the Council. The most important thing is to make

sure we have enough volunteers to cover a BINGO night.

Very Truly Yours, Tom Gurka – Grand Knight
