Brother Knights: Good-Bye Summer and Welcome Fall. At our Council meeting we approved funds to upgrade a sign, purchase a new Council Banner and purchase flags that will enable us to have a full complement of proper and good looking flags at our meetings and ceremonies. A great time was had by all that attended Our PGK's Dinner. Thanks to our Adviser (PGK Bill Martin), our Chairman SK Bob Smith, An-gie Smith and their family, our Head Cook PGK Gerald Padgett and his helpers and all the other people that made for a very successful and well attended event. Our local Boy Scout Troop served the food with speed and precision and the mothers that coordinated their tasks and the Youth Ministry group that helped clean up and finished off the left over food. Thanks to all. The Blue Mass gets bigger and better each year and a big thanks goes out to our 4th Degree Color Corps for their contribution to it. Monday Night Football is off and running with a great 1st. night turnout, thanks to PGK Ron Huerth. The Bowling League is off to a good start with lots of teams and subs, thanks to PGK Bill Alexan-der. The Simi Valley Days trash pickup crews did an outstanding job and we received a lot of complements from the organizers. We thank John MacKenzie and Paul Friedeborn for their organizational skills.

We are looking forward to yet another busy month. Pick out an event and get involved. And we welcome all the NEW GENTEL-MEN as they join us in this great organization, K of C COUN-CIL 5803. VIVAT JESUS BOB SPIELMAN GK

Russ:

During that first year, we learned of a parishioner who had been

evicted. After a few phone calls, we rounded up a truck and enough

men to move their belongings into a Brother’s garage at midnight,

and the family of 5 into another Brother’s home until they could get

on their feet. At another time, we loaded trucks with donated food

and made deliveries to families in need. When there was cleaning

or painting to be done or any other work, Brothers showed up.

Gail:

The Columbiettes used to collect $1 “dues” from everyone in atten-

dance at our meetings. We put on a spring fashion show. Eventu-

ally, we bought the Knights some tables and folding chairs for their

quarters. One of our talented members, Kathy Stone, made the first

Council banner, which was also presented to the men. We enjoyed

being together, our children played well with one another, and we

became a family-oriented group.

Helping Our Neighbors The Great Depression initially had a detrimental effect on the Or-der’s membership and finances, but it also led to a renewed sense of volunteer service. The success of an extensive membership cam-paign in 1935, titled Mobilization for Catholic Action, led to the establishment of the Order’s Service Department, which subse-quently launched a “Five-Point Program of Progress.” The pro-gram encouraged councils to play a more active role in the life of the local parish and community, and included five categories: Catholic activity, council activity, fraternal protection, publicity and maintenance of manpower. Also in the early 1930s, violent persecution resurfaced in Mexico, prompting the Order’s leadership to strongly urge the U.S. govern-ment to take action. Tensions in Mexico eventually eased in 1937, but the threat of atheistic communism was growing in Europe. In response, the Knights organized anti-communist rallies in early 1937. When Pope Pius XI’s encyclical on the subject, Divini Re-demptoris, was released in March of that year, the Order printed and distributed a million copies. The Knights also sponsored a new lecture tour and expanded its anti-communism program to include a Crusade for Social Justice. “Injustice to man is the seed of com-munistic growth,” Supreme Knight Martin Carmody said. “With Truth and Charity as your weapons, go forth as a Crusade.” 1932: The 50th anniversary of the Knights is celebrated with Com-memoration Week, June 24-30, 1932. Among the highlights is the unveiling in Washington, D.C. of a statue of Cardinal James Gib-bons, an early supporter of the Knights who had ordained Father McGivney. 1935: On July 8, 1935, Supreme Knight Martin Carmody and other K of C officials meet with President Franklin D. Roosevelt about the ongoing situation in Mexico. 1936: Cardinal Eugenio Pacelli, Vatican secretary of state, visits the Knights of Columbus headquarters in New Haven; in 1939, Cardinal Pacelli becomes Pope Pius XII.

INSURANCE REPORT

If the living room in your home is on the far corner of your lot, the dining room on another corner, the kitchen in the street and the bedrooms scattered all over the neighborhood, your home wouldn’t be very livable would it? It is the same with your life insurance. Unless the in-dividual policies you own are fitted together to form a balanced, well planned program, they cannot possi-bly do what they should for you. Good money management calls for having the life in-surance you own reviewed at regular intervals. In or-der to be financially sound, you should know exactly what you want the insurance to do for you. My review is not designed to get you to buy more life insurance. Instead, I work your ideas and ambi-tions into a plan, and then organize it with your budget in a way that will bring you closer to your goals. Call me today to schedule your review

By the time you read this bulletin our annual fishing trip will be com-pleted. Did you miss the trip this year? How many times have you said to yourself that you should go on the trip at least once? This trip should be on your bucket list. Start thinking now and be ready when the next trip comes around. The annual Men's KCO (K of C Outdoor Club) fishing trip to the Eastern Sierra's is held annually on the 1st weekend of October. Join me and 40-50 of your Brother Knights, friends, and families for a great weekend. Activities include a fishing derby with many prizes (adults and kids, depending on attendance), a BBQ Tri-Tip Dinner on Saturday Night, and card games when there are enough interested play-ers. If we have enough interest and help we may have a Sunday morn-ing breakfast. Beautiful mountain scenery, good fishing (trout up to 5 lbs) and good people. You shouldn't pass it up. Ask anybody that has ever gone, they will tell you what a great weekend it is. This event is open to all Council and Assembly members, their families, and friends. We generally have only male guests (let your wives and daughters have a "ladies night out" with other fishing trip widows). Lets hope that the weather, the Edison Company, and assorted others allow for more water into area lakes and streams. Like all of California, the Eastern Sierras need water/rain/snow. Let us pray that "El Nino" rains help our water shortage and ends our drought before we have more serious water shortages and possible rationing. 4TH DEGREE CORNER-ASSEMBLY 2557 DEACON’S CORNER Pope Francis

In his address to Congress, Pope Francis honored four Americans with his remarks. Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton. Many of us are very familiar with the first two mentioned but how many of us know about Dorothy Day and Thomas Merton? Dorothy Day was the socialist co-founder of the Catholic Worker Movement who championed labor and the poor and educated her life to social justice. The Holy Father told us she had a passion for justice and for the cause of the oppressed. The gospel, the Catholic faith and the example of saints, gave her deep commitment to the cause. To-day there are more than 208 Catholic Worker Communities across the US and more than two dozen internationally to assist those in need. She protested against war and nuclear weapons. She was adamant about personal sacrifice in order to perform the corporal and spiritual works of mercy for the stranger. She is now under consideration for sainthood. Thomas Merton was a Trappist monk, and author of several books. The Pope described him as “above all a man of prayer, a thinker who challenged the certitudes of his time and opened new horizons for souls and the church.” “He was also a man of dialogue, a promoter of peace between peoples and religions.” Francis used Merton’s legacy to transition into praising the United States’ renewed commitment to mending relationships with other na-tions (i.e. Cuba). Merton’s popular writings encouraged a post WWII generation to recommit itself to prayer and spirituality. Merton drew criticism for his support for the peace and civil rights movements of the 1960s. Merton’s pursuit of inner and outer peace led him to ex-plore Eastern spirituality, especially Zen Buddhism. There, he had an influential meeting with the Dalai Lama, who continues to refer to Mer-ton as “brother”. The Pope considers Thomas Merton as a model of peace. As Knights and the strong arm of the Catholic Church, we must lis-ten carefully to what the Holy Father has to say and take responsibility for what we believe. Deacon Terry

Brothers, The benefit of being homebound these last few days is I have been able to watch the historic visit of our Holy Father, Pope Francis on TV. What a great time it is to be Catholic in America! His recurring theme of helping the less fortunate, the outcast, those in prison and the hungry sums up much of what we as Knights do on a daily basis. We are members of the greatest fraternal order on this earth. I have seen firsthand the last few weeks the greatness of our fraternal order while I was in the hospital and now at home resting. The many cards, phone calls, emails, meals and most importantly the prayers are greatly appreciated. Having gone from “full speed” to “full stop” overnight was a bit of a shock and I am trying my best to listen to by body and get my rest. Thankfully our Worthy Warden Andy Prete has taken on the day to day tasks of our District but I promise I will be back and raring to go just as soon as I can! For October, each of your Grand Knights has received your soccer chal-lenge kits and essay contest packages and hopefully you are participating. We have an order wide membership drive October 17 and 18th. Your mem-bership blitz materials will be a great help in recruitment. Please let War-den Andy or myself know if you need any additional supplies. I leave you this month with the motto from our newest saint canonized last week in Washington DC. “Always Go Forward and Never Turn Back” ~ Junipero Serra  May God bless you and your loved ones and may He comfort any of you in physical or mental distress. Upcoming Knights of Columbus Cruise This article regarding the upcoming cruise is basically a repeat of information included in last month's article. As of the writing of the previous article (Aug 19th) we had 15 couples and two singles booked. Interest has slowed down but those that have already booked their cruise are anxiously awaiting our sailing date of Jan 18, 2016. We still have a room for a few more if you are interested. For those of you that may still be interested I have de-tails that may help you. We sail on Monday, January 18, 2016 returning on Friday, January 22, 2016. We sail on the Crown Princess from San Pedro, a day at sea, stopping in Santa Barbara, then on to a stop in Ensenada Mexico, then back to San Pedro. Most of us booked a Balcony cabin at a price of $604 including the cost of the cruise, port fees, and taxes. Costs could change if you want to upgrade or down-grade to a different class of cabin. Adeline reserved 30 cabins but you must act fast as she cannot hold them too long. For booking and more information call Adeline at "Sweet Adeline Travel and Tours" 1-818-368-6545 and tell her that you want to part of our cruise.

Come one and all to our annual Columbus Day spaghetti dinner sponsored by Council 5803 on Sunday October 18th.. Many years ago Brother Al Gam-mariello along with his family cooked this yearly feast for our council. After Al died his wife Lucretia along with her sons have carried on this yearly tra-dition. This year Brother Tony Bonomo joins Brother Tony Gammariello and his mom Lu and will be adding his famous eggplant parmigiana to the menu. All members, families and parishioners are invited. As many of you know Brother Andy Budinski has been hospitalized for many, many months. The economic burden on his wife and son has been devastating. Although we cannot do anything for his health, we certainly can do something to lighten the load on his family. As we have done in years past when a brother Knight was in need, we remember our call to charity and step up. Our Grand Knight has authorized this years dinner to be a fundraiser for the Budinski Family. Brother Andy’s birthday is October 20th so we thought it would be fitting to throw him a birthday party at our annual Columbus Day Dinner on Octo-ber 18th. Although the dinner is free we are asking for birth-day presents in the way of cash, checks or credit cards. You may make the checks out the St. Rose of Lima or use a credit card and it will be tax de-ductable. You also can make a check out to the Knights of Columbus but will not get the deduction. You may bring cash too. NO amount is too little. Whether it be $5.00 or $500, it will help our brother and his family. Fr. Shea has generously allowed this to be a parish event and is also making a donation from the Christian Service Program. The dinner will be held at 4:30 at the St. Rose of Lima Parish hall. We will also invite the parish over after the 5:00 mass as well. Please, please, please come out and support Brother Andy in his time of need. For more information or to lend a hand call PGK Cliff Wirtz at 208-8970. Thanks in advance for you generosity. Tony Gammariello, Tony Bonomo, John MacKenzie & Cliff Wirtz Co-Chairmen

What a fantastic evening! For a few minutes I thought we were watching a sequel to the God Father, all that was missing was the horse’s head. Kudos to Bob and Angie Smith for putting together a wonderful evening that outgoing Grand Knight Andy Prete will never forget. The spaghetti dinner prepared by chef Boyardee was mouthwatering, the entertain-ment provided by a singer whose name escapes me, it was something like Sinatra, or Benedetto or LaRosa was perfect for the evening. The boy scouts did a tre-mendous job serving the tables. And I would be remiss if I did not mention Tony, Tony, Tony and Tony for pro-viding the Grand Knight’s escort and protection. Thank you so much to all who helped put this event to-gether.

Bingo Workers

We are in need of more pull tab workers and we need a Finance person. Training is free, these are not hard jobs. For pull tabs you basically sell lottery tickets to the players, the finance guy counts the money and makes up payouts for the winners (desk job) . If you are new to the council please call me so I can get you on the Bingo Schedule. If you can’t work a specific weekend in October or have a shift preference please email me at [email protected] . I have also begun to post the bingo worker schedule online at www.kc5803.org, you will need a password to access it. This is the same password as for the roster. Call me if you need the password.
