August Knight of the Month is Phil Carosone Without fanfare, and without any recognition Phil consistently provides for the St. Mark’s Parish. Specifically, Phil is one of many Knights who look after the home needs of our widows. Repairing bathrooms, replacing lightbulbs, he even fixes kitchen sinks. He is there month in and month out leading by example.

August Family of the Month is Justin Azcona and Family Justin invited two new Catholic gentlemen to join our Council, to include his son, making this a family affair. Recruiting and growing our council is a big part of our mission and Justin is an example for all of us Knights. Congratulations to dad and son.

August Rookie of the Month is Ralph Malaker Brother Ralph has been with the Council for a short time but is already making an impact through his actions in St. Mark’s Parish. Brother Ralph is an Ecumenical Minister, participates in the Church Choir, and is active in supporting the annual ACTS Retreats at the Parish. Ralph is providing an example we can all follow.

2019 Religious Appreciation Dinner Once again, the council sponsored a table for the annual Religious Appreciation Dinner. SK Skip Rawley and DGK Sam Simon represented the council at the event. We got to spend quality time with both Seminarian Brandon LeClair and Brandon Woolums at dinner. We met and spoke at length with our newest seminarian Paul Trinh. He asked that we pass on his personal gratitude for supporting him through this challenging period in his life. As it was the Bishop’s 25th Anniversary he was in attendance as was many of the Officers from Texas State Council, to include, Worthy State Deputy Mark Evans. Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton Parish, and Council 76248 did an outstanding job sponsoring the event, it was an excellent dinner.

Get your Tamales Here! In support of our Seminarians Brother Dave Mayfield and a cast of characters routinely sell Tamales after masses on Saturday and Sunday. Look at the fun you are missing out on.....

Ric Hoff Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament 2019 Brother Knights, As hopefully many of you know already, this will be our 15th Annual Ric Hoff Memorial Golf Tournament. It is scheduled to be held at the Lantana Golf Course on Monday, October 14th, which is the observed Columbus Day holiday, a fitting day for an event put on by Knights of Columbus. While Oct. 14 may seem far off, it’s really not. We are now at a little less than 2 ½ months away. I am asking for everyone’s help to make this an even bigger success than last year and last year was a record setting accomplishment. Prior to last year, we had never broken past 100 golfers participating. The previous year was at 83. We blew past 100 and achieved 136 golfers, quite the record! As a result of that participation and the work behind the scenes to get sponsors and donations, we netted a sum of about $16,500, tripling the previous year.

While that is impressive, it is all history now, so on to this year. I am hoping that we can achieve even greater heights this year, but it will take effort from everyone to do so. Remember, our first tenet as a Knight is that of charity and it is for this that we sponsor this event in the first place. Besides having fun at the event, it is the youth of our parish that ultimately benefit from what we do and who we serve to help with in a financial way of support for their continuing education beyond high school. The RHMGT has been meeting to make this coming event a more efficient event this year than last year and you can expect to receive a forthcoming letter to ask for your support. Please take the time to read it and consider its content.

Besides responding to the letter referenced above, I ask you to talk and promote our event with your friends to seek golfers or sponsors and to additionally call on a business entity that you frequent to ask for sponsorship support. You will be amazed at what you can achieve if you just follow the words of scripture, “Ask and ye shall receive!” (John 14:13-14 or John 15:7or Matthew 21:22 to mention a few) Just so you know, the family of Ric Hoff is 100% behind What we do and have been so for all of the years. They not only participate as golfers, but help as volunteers on the day of and of course, contribute financially. It is a great tribute that we do what we do in memory of Ric Hoff. As Ric was fond of saying, “Everybody’s a Winner!” I appreciate also our Brother Knight Rick Wick for his efforts to make this a “Classic” event! His sponsorship and his presence in this and other things is a testament to what it means to be a Knight. All in all, we are making strides, but with Oktoberfest and our own 20th Anniversary upcoming in October as well, I’d like to be at a nearly ready to go state by mid-September,a month before the tournament like we achieved last year. So thanks for all of your efforts so far. We’re getting there, but we do have a ways to go. I look forward to a great event!

Field Agent’s Message Art Kelly

Raising Awareness About Life Insurance Each August we look forward to the Supreme Convention and all the news about the prior Fraternal Year. This year is no different. Although this message has been prepared prior to the convention, here are some predictions:

• The Order will set a new record in the amount of money we donated to charities.

• The Order will set a new record in the number of hours volunteered.

• We already know that our insurance program had another record year ending in December 2018; 18 consecutive years of growth! (And congratulations to the many of you who protected your families last year and helped set that record!)

• We will have given a substantial amount of money to Pope Francis from the Vicarius Christi fund.

• Our Asset Advisors will have more dollars under management; managed, of course using the investment guidelines from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

• We will add to our surplus, which means our strength to pay claims and weather poor economic times will improve.

• I predict that the Supreme Knight will report that the Order will have provided more money to rebuild homes for persecuted Christians in the Middle East; donated more money to disaster relief in the wake of hurricanes, flooding and typhoons; placed more ultrasound machines in service to save lives; and, given more support for religious freedom.

This organization, started by a simple, humble parish priest with men at St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882, has grown to spectacular heights. All of these efforts and worthwhile projects are a source of pride for us members!

But here’s the reality: For the Catholic folks in this council and in these parishes here—you, my brother knights…you, are the Knights of Columbus. When locals think about the Knights, they may have some general notion about all these good works we do and the Order’s amazing impact around the world. But to the local parish and the community, you represent all that is good in this Order. When you are volunteering at a Special Olympics event, when you are visiting the sick, helping your pastor, handing out coats for kids, selling Tootsie Rolls, raising money for a charitable cause right here in your own backyard—this is what people see, they see you; to them you are what it means to be a Knight of Columbus. When you lead with faith, protect your family, serve others and defend your values, you are a witness inspired by our founding principles. Congratulations on another record-breaking fraternal year! I look forward to helping protect your families and reaching Star Council this next fraternal year! Vivat Jesus!

Faithful Navigator’s Message Jacob Engel No 4th Degree update for this month. Assembly Social and Business Meeting Wednesday, August 14, 2019 6:30 pm Assembly Social and Business Meeting Wednesday, September 11, 2019 6:30 pm

History of the Knights of Columbus The Knights after World War I After the Great War, the Order continued its charitable work, offering education and employment services to returning servicemen. In less than two years, the Knights of Columbus Bureau of Employment placed some 100,000 people in jobs. Two years after launching educational, vocational and employment programs for World War I veterans, more than 50,000 students are enrolled in K of C-sponsored evening school programs across the United States and Canada. The Order also launches a correspondence school. Throughout the 1920s, the Order’s anti-defamation work also continued on several fronts. When the Ku Klux Klan and other “nativist” and anti-Catholic groups launched campaigns to make students attend public schools, Church leaders enlisted the Knights’ support. In response to the passage of laws in Oregon prohibiting children under 16 from attending private schools, the Knights work to overturn the law. In 1925, the Supreme Court declares the Oregon law unconstitutional. In 1926 Supreme Knight Flaherty and other officers meet with President Calvin Coolidge about the persecution of the Catholic Church in Mexico. The Order launches a $1 million educational campaign to influence American public opinion on the need for a strong stand against the Mexican government’s attacks on the Church. Each month we will place a new tidbit of historic information from State, Supreme and the Ralph Cerny Chapter.

Saturday - October 12, 2019 We will be back in Joe’s Gym with entertainment provided by Tavie’s Rock and Roll Show. This will be an evening of food, fun, dancing, and celebrating 20 years of outstanding service to the St. Mark’s Community. Please join us in celebrating this fantastic Council and its rich history!!!

Hike For Life – September 21 The annual Hike for life is RESCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 21st. SK Manny Trevino is organizing the event with his beautiful bride Mary. HIKE FOR is a pro-life walk in the city of Denton. It specifically, raises money for the Loreto House, the only Catholic Pregnancy Center in the area. Loreto House has a non-judgmental atmosphere of understanding and support. Loreto House provides materials and assistance, such as maternity and baby clothing, food, and more. They provide confidential counseling and mentoring, with assistance in education and decision-making regarding pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. And if that is not enough, they have been known to save babies. We need your support, as well as your prayers.

Carter BloodCare Blood Drive The next blood drive is scheduled for Sunday, August 18th. When giving blood you will be receiving at no cost to yourself a free Hepatitis C screening, which is very important for folks over the age of 50.

Country Western Dance – Rescheduled The Council in conjunction with the Loreto House fund raising committee, is organizing a Country Western Dance and fund raiser. All proceeds will benefit Loreto House pregnancy crisis center. There is always a need to support the respect of Life in our corner of the world. The dance will be held at Joe's Gym – a new date and more details to follow.

Knights Softball is coming! The Council is organizing a softball team. An email canvasing for potential coaches and participants was sent. Please contact SK Ignacio Salazar with any questions. Participation in an upcoming league will be discussed at the council meeting.

The Sports Section Wanted: A Few Good Bowlers © 2019 Anthony S. Layne

The summer league is almost over. As of this writing (July 30), the K of C Blue team is 13 – 23 with three more weeks to go, two more for final rankings. This season, we were perpetually short-handed with just three bowlers, one of whom was out for two weeks with an injured foot and one who was gone on a family trip. But while it would be nice to be higher up in the ranks, the main reasons for league bowling are the fun, the fellowship, and the chance to represent the Knights among the Denton community.

Which brings me to my next point: After a two-week break, the 2019-2020 Sunday Sundowners regular bowling season will begin Sept. 8. That night, the league will have its annual meeting at 6:00pm, where we’ll finalize the rules, fees, and other housekeeping. After the meeting, and at 6:30pm for the rest of the season, warm-up will begin. The Sundowners is a mixed handicap league, so: 1) you don’t have to be a very good bowler to contribute to victory (I should know), and 2) if your wife bowls better than you do, you can bring her in as a ringer. The weekly lineage fee (which will probably be $20) covers shoes and ball for those who don’t own their own, as well as contributing to the end-of-season prize fund—yes, you get some money back! The league is sanctioned by the USBC (based in Arlington), so there is a one-time, one-year basic membership fee (est. $23 for the coming year), which the Council will reimburse Brother Knights who play. And the alley offers league bowlers a 10% discount on food and drinks, including adult beverages. And, since there are TVs between the alley monitors, you don’t have to miss Sunday Night Football! We’ve fielded two and three teams before; I know we can do it again. If you’d like to have fun with a lot of great Dentonites, give me a call or send me a text at 940-206-1981, or email me at [email protected]. Or show up at Bowlero (formerly The Brunswick Zone), 2200 San Jacinto, on Sunday, Sept. 8 by 6:00pm. I look forward to seeing you there!
