The first month of the Fraternal year was not exactly filled with non-stop action and events. It was as quiet and uneventful as any I have seen since becoming Grand Knight. Fred and Mary are an integral part of the Council

and Ladies Auxiliary. They both work tirelessly

on all our major events and even some of the

smaller ones. They recently took over the

popcorn machine for our movie night. Charlie

said he could not have done the event without

them! They give of themselves to support our

council events and our parish family. They are a

blessing to all of us. Thank you both for all you

do.

Knight of the Year

July John Carlson

John has taken over the job of food director for

our fall food festival. His planning and

attention to detail has to be seen to be

believed. He has created a feast for those of

us who will be lucky enough to attend this

event on October 3, 2014. Additionally, he is

checking our equipment in room 200 to make

sure it is operating properly. His many years

of food service experience will help us now

and in the future. Thank you John, for all your

help.

On April 11th we hosted our 11th Fish Fry in ten years. We’ve come a long way from that first one. Gone are the small back yard fryers. Now we have three professional Pitco fryers. The fish has changed from catfish to beer battered Icelandic Cod. We keep both the fish and French fries in pro-fessional warmers and we use two freezers outside to keep the fish and fries fresh. Gone are the long lines because with this equipment, we can start early and keep up with the crowd. The price has gone up a little but it is still an inexpensive meal for all our parishioners to enjoy. Every event such as this requires a lot of volunteers. They came and operated as a well disciplined team. Most came early (2:00 pm) and stayed late (9:00 pm). It started with the cooking crew led by Larry Ciske with his 30 years experience with YUM. They set up the fryers, the refrigerators, the electricity, the tables and tablecloths and started cooking so everything would be ready at 5:00 pm in the kitchen. The kitchen crew led by Maryjane and helped by members of the Choir and Ladies Auxiliary, came early to mix up coleslaw, cover tables and put out center pieces. They organized the kitchen so that food could flow smoothly and laid out the serving tables to insure that food was in the right order and attractive. Meanwhile both warmers were set up to receive fish and fries. When service started the ladies plated hot fries in 4 ounce portions and passed them with fish out to the serving line. The drinks crew, lead by Jim Goode and Brad Istas got their tables ready with coffee, and with ice for tea, lemonade and water. Gail Ciske cut up desserts and laid them out artistically. The money-men, lead by Bernie Grant, came with change in hand and set up their table to sell tickets. The serving line team, led by Art Victorine, insured both food warmers were wired and taped down. When service started they handed out the food to our customers. Many Squires came to bus tables, clean up and help wherever they could. Many others came and did what they could to help. Lastly the dish washing crew came to clean up when the rest of us were beat. Of course our Grand Knight, Bob Brennan, was there all night to greet and socialize with our guests as they came in. It was a fantastic job done by all hands. We served 374 people in an hour and a half. We brought in $2854 at a cost of $1194 for a net of $1563. The food was great and none of us heard a single com-plaint. Thanks to All. Fraternally, Jim Newberry

CREDIT CARD PROCESSINGCREDIT CARD PROCESSINGCREDIT CARD PROCESSINGCREDIT CARD PROCESSING Thanks to Kevin Haas we are testing a wireless router and credit card swipes to help us process credit card transactions for our many events. This will, hopefully, allow us to capitalize on opportuni-ties to collect more funds to donate to our many charities. This process was used at the July Ta-male Sales and will be used at the August Burrito Breakfast. It is important to work out the bugs be-fore the Fall Food Festival.

VA Hospital Donation

Deputy Grand Knight Dave Duff (center) and Program Director Brad Istas (left) delivered an air hockey to the VA Hospital in Bonham, TX. After a visit and tour at the hospital to determine needs, Dave Duff located the table at St. Vincent de Paul Society and worked with the President to effect the donation. More opportunities to help the hospital are available and Dave will be meeting with council members to evaluate these options.

Fr. Michael J. McGivney Anniversaries August is a very special month since both the birth and death anniversary of the founder of the Knights of Columbus, Fr. Michael J. McGivney, is celebrated. His birth was August 12, 1862, and he died August 14, 1892 (30 years of age). Fr. McGivney was a young associate pastor in a working-class immigrant parish in in Hartford, Ct. When a parishioner died without visible means of support for his wife and family , Father gathered two dozen men in the basement of the church, which led to the formation of the Knights of Colum-bus, dedicated to charity, fraternity, unity and patriotism. Today 2 million Catholic men around the world belong to the Knights of Columbus, and dedicate themselves to those principles, including Council #7850 right here at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish. Fr. McGivney stands as an inspiration to all. To young Catholic men considering a priestly vocation and ordained priests, he lived as an example of what can be done by "just a parish priest." To fa-thers he reminds us of what it is to provide for our families, both spritually and financially. For all Catholics, he shows us how to live a life of both prayer and action. The Congregation for the Causes of Saints at the Vatican is currently reviewing Father McGivney's life and works and investigating two reported miracles attributed to his intercession, and has recog-nized him as "venerable.". Knights contribute more than 70 million hours per year in service to charitable causes. Are you inter-ested in joining these men? Contact Steve Gumm, [email protected].

Annual Family Picnic

Thanks to all who came to the Family Picnic and made it another fantastic success. The weather on Saturday, July 19th was extremely pleasant due to the previous days of rain and coolness. And on the 19th the skies were overcast. The weather, however, caused many expected swimmers to change their minds. The event took place at Plano Country Place Clubhouse, which has been our host for several years! The setting is beautiful and the air-conditioned dining room is always a bless-ing, although not filled to capacity this year.

Our attendance was 72 adults (12 more than last year) & 15 children (8 less than last year) who thoroughly enjoyed the facilities. We had a total attendance of 87, 4 more than last year. I didn’t see any game playing this year, but we had 13 brave swimmers. Again this year we had new families attend who added to the festivities.

The thanks are numerous again this year. Bob Causer, Bob Bren-nan, Brad Istas, George Ferito, and Ray Vasinda helped me with the shopping and initial setup. These same folks plus Alex Mauricio and Bob Wilson helped rearrange the Tree House dining area to

handle more seating. My wife, Carol, Irma Mauricio, Marge Bren-nan, and Cathy Causer helped set the serving line up and Alex Mauricio sliced and plated the hamburger fixings. And what would we do without cooks (since the main entrée was hamburgers and hot dogs)? Thanks to Bob Causer and Steve Gumm for the ex-ce l l en t f l ame

broiled burgers and dogs! The cooks had many, many observers who, I'm sure, provided excellent guidance as well. The timing ensured that people coming after the 5 pm mass still had fresh cooked food. Thank you Dave Duff and Steve Ousey for helping with check-in this year. Thanks to everyone who brought appetizers and desserts. We were

kind of heavy on desserts this year and I need a better plan next year. I'll do better on the alphabet balance and am thinking that salads might be a better choice than ap-petizers.

The Tree House kitchen clean up crew included Carol Goode, Marge Brennan, Cathy Causer, and Pat Kistner. Dave Kistner, Keith Rock, Jim Wilkins, and Ron Harabis helped get the tables and chairs folded and

put back in the closet. Pat McCormick helped with the grounds policing and cleanup (which he reported was a very light assignment because the grounds were very clean). And then we get to the most thankless job of all, but you are receiving my warmest thanks. Bob Causer, Bob Brennan, Ron Harabis, Dave Kistner, and George Ferito

helped get the large coolers and supplies taken back to the FFC room 130 and room 200. And, bless their hearts, Ron Harabis and Dave Kistner put all the soaking wet drinks back in the refrig-erator. We had about 4 cases each of soda and beer and 3 cases of water left over. Between this event and the Movie Night the Warden should be in good shape on drinks for awhile. I truly appreciate the tremendous help and sup-

port for this event and apologize to anyone I failed to mention individually (since I can't be everywhere at once, I have to depend on others to help me know who all helped). Make plans to attend this event next year. Bring your family and have a blast. Jim Goode
