Soon as you stroll through the local stores, you’ll see an abundance of bunnies, baskets, and candy for sale, and those may be the only signs of Easter you’ll find outside of church. Unlike its Christmas counterpart, Easter is largely uncommercialized, which is pretty wonderful: the day that we celebrate the glory of Christ’s resurrection remains untainted by retailers. However, just because we’re not receiving Easter ad

upon Easter ad in our newspapers and inboxes doesn’t mean we should pigeonhole the holiday as a minor celebration. On the contrary, Easter is perhaps the most crucial holiday on the Christian calendar—even the word crucial has its roots in Christianity, stemming from the term for crucify.

“And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him. Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the Good News of God, and saying, ‘The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the Good News.’”– Mark 1:12-15

The season we call Lent, the forty days prior to Easter, represents the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness, continually tempted by Satan. When He emerged from the wilderness, He knew it was time for the prophesy of His death and resurrection to be fulfilled.

As followers of Jesus, we remember this. We look to this time of Lent as a way to go into our own ‘wilderness’ of sorts; we pray, we fast, we meditate, we worship, we focus on God. We ready ourselves for the grief of Christ’s death and we take joy in the gospel of His rising again. We are granted eternal life through Christ, the Messiah lifted up.

I invite you to join us as we take a closer look at the life of Christ these next few weeks as we recall what this season is all about.

Lenten Blessings,

Pastor Joel Martyn

CALL FOR NOMINEES Church council elections are coming up sometime in April. Between now and then, the Nominating Team is seeking confirmed KLC members who would be willing to place their name into nomination for one of the 3 positions that will be open. The 2019-2020 term begins July 1st, and is a two-year term. Please consider whether you would be willing to serve in this area of the ministry of KLC. The council consists of 12 members, the new council members

will replace the outgoing ones. If you would like more information, please speak with members of the Nominating Team – Steve Moksnes, Ollie Stafford, Sue Moorcroft or Dave Reader.

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

This past month, our congregation had a few celebratory mo-ments. One was our annual whale watch. It was a great time for our ohana to get together for fellowship and see God’s crea-tions. We also celebrated the wonderful work of Ali Dauler and

family while also saying “Aloha” as they move to the mainland. Ali specifically helped KLC develop one our largest outreach ministries, the Keiki Klothing Exchange. The KKE reaches hundreds of families every month and is an excellent example of how KLC strives to meet its purpose of “sharing God’s love with others”. We are grateful for her leadership and wish the entire family well as they embark on their new endeavors. If there is a silver lining in their departure, it is that the KKE will live on. Thanks to Ali, we have another community member (Mel Eisenhart) who has stepped up to guide this great ministry. The KLC ohana will need to continue to provide support moving forward.

In late February, our council met in a retreat to discuss KLC’s Purpose, Mission, and Vision (PMV), the church committee structure and how to better communicate as we do our work. We had hearty conversations on how Council and our committees can do better to serve KLC and our community. Future planning meetings will continue as the PMV is fully developed. The goal is to align our or-ganizational structure with our Purpose, Mission and Vision (once finalized).

Mahalo to those of you who were able to attend and participate in our annual meeting on February 24th. If you happened to miss it and would like a copy of the annual report, please contact the church office or check one of the recent e-blasts.

Our congregation will meet again on March 3 after the second service. The purpose of this meeting will be to brainstorm and develop a Mission, the next component of our PMV process. There has been recent emails detailing this information. Please check your inbox for more details. If you have thoughts or questions you can also speak with Pastor Joel, myself or any one of the committee members. (Joel Rudow, Barbara Rudow, Ollie Stafford, Trevor Sim, or Mo Hottendorf).

In just a few days from the publishing of this, we will enter the season of Lent. Lent is a time of re-pentance and self-reflection and time to focus on our relationship with God. As we continue our work together, let us also take some time to reflect on all of the blessings God continues to bestow on Kihei Lutheran Church. KLC may have its share of “growing pains” as we journey through the PMV planning and execution, but we should celebrate our great work and the joys we encounter as we share God’s love with others.

PIRATES OF PENZANCEThe season's first event for the KLC Theatre Fellowship Group is March 17, 3PM, at the Iao Theatre in Wailuku. The musical show is a delightfully funny tale of a band of soft-tempered pirates. Titled "Pirates of Penzance", Frederick, a boy apprentice of the pirates, leaves the group at age 21 and encounters a gaggle of beautiful maidens, including Mabel who steals his heart. (See the poster behind the welcome table). This funny farce of a classic is amusement for all ages. Bring along friends or neighbors. Group tickets are $18 each, cash or check. You can sign-up and pay at a table on the lanai Feb. 24 or March 3 followed by ticket pickup March 10. For more information contact Dee or Dave Reader at 874-1481.

REPORT OF THE FEBRUARY 19 COUNCIL MEETING

On February 19, members of Council meet to discuss and make de-cisions for operations at KLC. Along with the information presented here, committees prepared written reports of happenings since the previous Council meeting. If you wish to have more information,

these reports are available by contacting Council secretary, Marilyn Hopkins.

At every meeting, we share celebrations and concerns of Council members and those we know of in the KLC ohana. These are included in the opening prayer.

Pastor Joel and Council President Phil Proctor both presented written reports. Plans for the upcom-ing Council member retreat and both congregational meetings were shared. In the past month, Pastor Joel visited 8 members and 6 non-members and performed 2 baptisms, 1 funeral, 1 vow re-newal and 1 wedding.Vicki Lee reported that as of February 20, 2019, there is $17,380 in the General Fund.We continue to work with Wiki Wiki to correct problems of the PV systems on the church and par-sonage.

The PMV Committee has prepared a summary of information gathered. The process to be followed at the March 3 Congregational Meeting was presented. Through this process, many mission ideas can be whittled down to the three top missions on which we will concentrate for the next few years.

The Task Force is seeking updated cost information for playground improvements, windows for the parsonage and the worship area sound system.

The Finance Committee recommended that general fund account 5609, General Maintenance, be used to pay for the new stove at the parsonage even though the cost will exceed the budget by $80.

Peter Harp is now a member of the Worship Committee.

The meeting was adjourned with prayer by Pastor Joel. The next regular meeting of Council will be March 19, 2019, at 7:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Marilyn Hopkins

ADULT EDUCATIONWe have enjoyed a faith journey through I Corinthians in the Sunday clas-ses after the 9:30 worship service and will continue on March 10, after the Annual Meeting on February 24 and the Congregational Meeting on March 3. It has helped us strengthen our relationship with God. I Corinthians will be our focus through April 7. We hope you will consider joining us and en-hance our journey with your ideas as we continue our discussions.

Looking ahead, Barry Rosenfeld will lead a 5-week study of comparative religions beginning April 28.

KEIKI KLOTHING EXCHANGE (KKE)We Could Use Your Help

This once-a-month ministry is serving about 400 families across the island of Maui. People bring what they can and take what they need for their families. Clothing is available for newborns through 12 years of age and for mothers. There are also baby items, toys, shoes and books.

Keiki Klothing Exchange meets the first Saturday of every month. Here is the schedule of events starting on Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. and ending around 12:00 p.m.

Setup begins on Saturday at 8:00 a.m. when volunteers take down the chairs in the sanctuary. Can you give 1/2 hour of your time to help?

On Saturday at 9:00 people arrive with donations. These donations need to be sorted by size and gender. Sorting continues through 10:45. Can you give an hour of your time to help?

On Saturday at 11:00 the event ends and volunteers put leftovers in plastic bags, take down tables, sweep the sanctuary floor and put back the chairs for Sunday worship. Can you give 45 minutes of your time to help?

If you answered yes to any of these, please show up at the church. Your will be greatly appreciat-ed. If you could please let Mel Eisenhart know if you can help, that would be much appreciated. Mel’s contact info. Phone: 808-264-2846.

FORTY DAYS OF GIVING

Lent is a time to open our hearts to God's grace through prayer, confession, fasting, and denying ourselves the excesses of life. It is also a time to become aware of the suffering and sacrifice of Christ and also the suffering of others.

How can we give something of ourselves to others? Our challenge to you between Ash Wednesday and Good Friday is to give 40 servings of food to those in need via the Maui Food Bank. What is an example of 40 servings? How about four boxes of cereal (9 to 12 servings per box), or three jars of peanut butter, or 6 cans of tuna fish. YOU do the math and decide what you would like to give during the Lenten season Please don't feel as though you must bring all 40 servings all at once. One item per week of cereal, peanut butter, pasta, jars of sauce, etc... may be given during the Lenten season. A Tupperware bin will be stationed on the lanai to receive your gift of 40 servings during the 40 Days of Giving. Mahalo.

HOW WE CHOOSE CHURCH MUSICHave you ever wondered about the music that is chosen to be part of our services at Kihei Lutheran Church? Who plans the songs? How do they get chosen? When are we going to sing my favorite? Can we please never sing that one again? Here’s a window into the process. There are three things to keep in mind when selecting music for our congregational singing. They are:

What is the theme of the day? What are the liturgical actions that are taking place on this day? Is there a Baptism? Holy Communion?

Installation of parish council members? Farewell and Godspeed to some longtime members? What is the function of each hymn within the service? Is a particular hymn appropriate for the liturgical season we are currently in? For example, we wouldn’t

choose, “Jesus Christ is Risen Today”, during the season of Lent. We wouldn’t choose, “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”, during the season of Advent.

The primary source we use when selecting hymns for liturgy is called, “Sunday and Seasons”.Sunday and Seasons is a rich and reliable resource for worship. Sunday and Seasons is published out of the ELCA publishing house, Augsburg Fortress, and is used by pastors and lay people in planning worship.

At Kihei Lutheran Church, our process is very simple. Our Music Coordinator studies the scripture readings for each Sunday and uses Sunday and Seasons as well as other resources to choose hymns that mirror the message of the day. Most of our music is selected out of the Evangelical Lutheran Book of Worship which has Indexes which include: Topical Index, Sources of Service Music and Hymns, Alphabetical Index of Tunes and Metrical Index.

At our monthly Worship Team meeting, the team runs through the hymn selections and either approves them or make other suggestions for hymns. The Pastor also checks through the selections, especially if the sermon hymns reflect the theme of the Sunday and what he is going to reflect on in his sermon for the day.

If there are certain hymns you would like to sing more often or if you have any other questions, please feel free to either contact the head of our Worship Team, Marilyn Fornwall, or send a note to our Pastor.

Music in Liturgy Checklist: Practical Questions about music’s role in your assembly Is the congregation’s voice primary? In other words, are people singing? Do choirs and other musical ensembles support or overshadow the congregation’s voice? Does technology enliven or overshadow the congregation’s voice? Are musical leaders sensitive to how music functions in the liturgy? Are congregation members lovingly encouraged to participate musically? Do hymns and songs relate to the scripture readings? Do hymns and songs function well according to their place in the service: gathering, word, meal or send-

ing? Does the music of the liturgy proclaim the gospel? How is community formed by what is sung? How diverse is the assembly’s song? Do you sing across space and time?

The checklist above is from the resources listed below sent out by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. This site is very helpful in understanding the active part of music in liturgy. Just hit control and click on the link to open them.
