ALOHA FROM PASTOR DAVEAt the end of August, I received a very interesting email from the Direc-

tor of Evangelical Mission for the South Dakota Synod of the ELCA. The email asked me to participate in a survey that this pastor was taking. That, in and of itself, is not terribly fascinating news. We receive surveys all the time. Howev-er, the criteria he used to choose congregations to send this survey to grabbed my attention. He stated: “I am approaching congregations that were organized

since the ELCA’s inception 25 years ago. Your congregation was selected from among that group because it ranks among the healthiest new congregations in the ELCA when consider-ing measures of growth in attendance, numbers of adult baptisms or affirmations of faith and per confirmed member offerings as a percentage of household income.” (his emphasis, not mine).

In looking at that comment, I found myself readily agreeing with what he stated. KLC is a healthy congregation in so many respects. However, is it perfect? Hardly! But that’s not ex-pected either. If there’s one thing I was reminded of in my studies while on sabbatical, it’s that it’s normal for congregations to consist of people who have widely differing opinions about things. And sometimes those folks disagree with how things ought to be handled. (Shocking, isn’t it?) But in the end they find a common ground that works for the entire group through tak-ing the time to communicate with each other. That’s the healthy way to do things, and it’s the way things frequently happen around here.

As a result of my studies this summer, I want the leadership of the congregation (church council members, chairpersons of teams), including as many members and friends of KLC as possible, to take part in a workshop entitled “Healthy Congregations”. It’s not that I believe KLC is unhealthy. I’m convinced that such a workshop can take our healthy situation and make it better. That will especially be important as we continue to experience this transi-tion from being a pastor-led to a program-led congregation.

I have learned that Pastor Paul Kirchner of Lihue Lutheran Church on Kaua‘i is trained to lead such a workshop. It would probably consist of a 3 hour session on a Saturday morning, followed by a two hour session on Sunday afternoon. There would then be a follow-up session of 2 hours in length a month later. He’s offered to lead this workshop for KLC, and is thinking of doing so in January/February of next year. I mention this to you now so that you might make it a priority on your calendar. In 1 Thessalonians 5:12ff., Paul encourages us to “Live in peace with each other” and to “be patient with everyone”, as well as to “strive to do good for each other and for everyone else”. This is what we do when we serve in ministry with each other in a healthy way. Please watch for more on the “Healthy Congregations” workshop in the weeks ahead. God be with and surround you with his grace!

    Ke Akua me ke Aloha,

    DaveKrueger

We NEED You!! Due to the volume of pictures/documents that have been returned to KLC in an-ticipation of our anniversary celebration, we find that we are in desperate need of another person to assist in copying this data onto a flash-drive. Please contact Vicki or Jessica Nelson at 879-6908 if you can help with this important project. Mahalo nui!

ALOHA FROM THE PRESIDENTOh My Goodness, Oh My Gracious—OH MY GOD! Three expressions that easily de-

scribe the month of September 2013 that this congregaon just went through-- “God’s Work-Our Hands”- celebrang the 25th Anniversary of the ELCA, we collected almost a ton (1938 lbs,) of canned food and goods for Keolahou Church’s food pantry in less than 6 weeks. Over 500 lbs. of foodstuff was also collected in the same period to support the “BackPack Buddies” program that is island wide through the efforts of the Maui Food Bank- Mahalo to everyone who helped out and supported this Churchwide celebraon focusing on “Community Service”, The Aloha Spirit is alive and well here at Kihei Lutheran Church ,a fact that connues to be demonstrated by this Congregaon each and every me it has been called on to “serve” our Lord.

The Facility Expansion is proceeding accordingly, with the usual hiccups and bumps in the road one would expect from a project this size. Your KLC Building Team is sll hard at work making sure things progress as smoothly as possible. All the permits are in place, the financing is covered so far, and I am honored to report that I have signed the contract with Viking Construcon Company. Demolion and reconstrucon is slated to begin by the end of the monthd. Here we go folks, Are we ready for some CHANGE?

Speaking of CHANGE, Your Worship Team made the hard decision to start holding two (2) Services on Sundays at 8:00am and 10:30AM. Beginning Sunday November 24th . This is due to the fact that our worship space will be reduced by approx. 30% when we move about 38 chairs out of the way for the new side wall construcon to be completed. So realiscally there will only be 100 seats inside the house at each service. Given the fact that November and December are tradionally when we see our aendance numbers rise to 200 plus people per Sunday, it just made sense to start two services nowinstead of waing unl January. We will try to accommodate everyone who comes to worship at KLCas comfortably as possible. With everybody’s kokua and cooperaon things should progress smoothlyand quickly and before you know it we will be in the “New” House. What an excing me we are ex-periencing in the life of this congregaon. All of us should be proud to have ownership of what is to transpire in the next six months. So…..Keep sending in those pledges.., (Money Talks…)Mahalo’s to you , my Brothers and Sisters in Christ. God’s Work- Our Hands, Alive and in living color here at KLC, just look around.

    In HIS Service,Zel Terluin

MEET PAUL EMANOVSKYSubmitted by Pastor John

Paul was born and raised on rural Long Island Sound, New York. His father was a boat-builder, a true craftsman, who by example led PAUL to choose his life-long occupation as a commercial fisherman. At the age of 13. Paul bought his first boat, and began his career bringing freshly-caught fish to market. Spending all of his life at sea, PAUL has some fascinating stories to tell about "the ones that got away" and the ones that didn't!

PAUL spent much of his life going after clams--hard shell and razor. He also fished for striped bass, eel and shark. If it lived in the Atlantic Ocean, PAUL saw it, caught it and ate it. He con-sidered his fishing fun, not work. When the storms blew and the waves crashed over his boat--30 miles off the coast--he always made safe harbor, and gave Jesus all the credit and thanks.

PAUL has two adult children: his son Paul has a Ph.D. in forensic anthropology, and works at JPAC on Oahu, where his task is to identify remains of military personnel who have lost their lives in other countries so long ago; his daughter Jennifer is married to a North Carolina State Trooper helicopter pilot, and is the mother of two boys, ages 4 and 1.

PAUL and his wife moved to Maui in 2003, where she fought a battle with cancer until the Lord called her home in 2004. PAUL was blessed by God who united him in marriage with DEB-BIE, who works as office manager at VIP Tax Services.

Probably busier now than when he was working, PAUL takes constant care of his rental prop-erties. "If it's broken, PAUL can fix it!"

    BERT SCHIFFERLING:

A huge Mahalo to Bert Schifferling for the time and energy he put in being part of the Deposit Counting Team. Bert worked tirelessly week after week for the past few years making sure our offer-ings and donations made it to the bank. We are grateful to Bert for volunteering and want him to know how much he is appreciated for doing so.

PASTOR JOHNMany Mahalos to Pastor John Cassidy for filling in for Pastor Dave as he took his sabbati-cal. Pastor John kept the congregation ‘s at-tention with his humorous sermons, visual ef-fects and special keiki messages. We appreci-ate Pastor John’s willingness to serve in this capacity, it was a fun summer for all who at-tended KLC.

    BLESSING OF THE PRAYER SHAWLS

Aloha and God’s Peace to you this day. Our next BLESSING OF THE PRAYER SHAWLS will be SUNDAY OCTOBER 13 at the 9AM Service. Please know that you are welcome to receive a Prayer Shawl for any reason. They are for joyous times, sickness, devotion time, or for any reason that someone might want to be

wrapped in prayer and know that God is with you. At this time in our ministry we are in need of money to supply the yarn that is used for each prayer shawl. This ministry began in February 2007 and IS NOT in our budget at KLC. We have been blessed by donations to keep this min-istry going. If you would like to donate to this ministry please make out a check to Kihei Lu-theran Church and then please mark the MEMO PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY as this is a re-stricted fund. We thank you ahead of time for your generosity to keep this ministry going. In the last six and a half years we have given out 2,055 which is 26 shawls a month. Mahalo la-dies for all the hours of knitting and prayer and mahalo to all who give money for the yarn.

God bless you!...The Prayer Shawl Hui

    HERE WE GO!

The weekend of September 14-15 was very significant at KLC as the contract with Viking Con-struction was signed, and the congregation participated in ground breaking as part of the Sun-day morning worship service. The expansion of the church facilities is officially underway. Vi-king is scheduled to begin work the week of September 29th. At first it won’t seem like much is happening, but it won’t be long before things will start moving. The schedule calls for construc-tion to be completed around mid-March of next year. Watch for pictures and updates in the days and weeks ahead.

God’s Gifts Our Hands Final Update and Mahalo:On Sunday Sept 8th an electricity filled the walls of KLC, and it did not come

from the solar panels...it was the awesome excitement shared by all who helped, gave so generously, loaded, prayed, and then joined in the delivery of the 1958 (approx) pounds of food that was donated to the Keolahou Food Pantry and Back Pack Bud-dies. Not all the food went right away on Sunday but was held waiting for Back Pack Buddies volunteers to take it to the Maui Food Bank for storage. Around 60+ congre-gation members, keiki and visitors drove to Keolahou Church to deliver the food. We were met by the waiting arms of the Keolahou Church members and in short order the boxes made it inside to the empty shelves of the pantry. Refreshments were served by the members of Keolahou, pictures were taken and a prayer was given. It was a special time for all who participated and a true reflection of “God’s Work Our Hands”.

There is no real way to express the gratitude to everyone who had a HAND in this amazing project, however a special Mahalo to the Terluins, Nelsons, and Kistlers for their roles in making this day happen, and to each and everyone who donated all the food and helped achieve the goal that was set.It truly was a “God Thing”.

KLC WORSHIP SCHEDULEPerhaps you’ve heard by now. Due to the ex-

panding of the KLC facilities, which involves the sanc-tuary, the Sunday worship schedule will shift to two services at 8:00 and 10:30 a.m., starting Sunday, November 24th, and remain so through Easter Sun-day, April 20th.

Why are we moving to two services a month earlier than usual? It has to do with the expansion project. Starting on November 18th, Viking Construc-tion will be building “false” walls on the interior of the sanctuary, roughly around the inside edge of the sof-fit. This needs to be done in order to tear down the current outside walls to make the opening into the new space that’s being built around the outside of the current building. This will cause the loss of approxi-mately 30-35 chairs, which means the sanctuary will only be able to hold 100-110 people. It would be diffi-cult to accommodate the numbers we normally have in December with the restricted number of seats. That’s why the change to two services, starting on November 24. Please make note of that.

You should also know that the worship sched-ule for Christmas Eve will be expanded to three ser-vices this year, at 4:00, 6:00, & 8:00 p.m., for the same reasons. The plan is to make the 4:00 p.m. ser-vice one that is family/keiki friendly, while the 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. services will be the more traditional style. Speak with Worship Team Chair, Zel Terluin (874-5049), or Pastor Dave if you have any questions.

    ONLINE SPIRITUAL GIFTS

    ASSESSMENTThe KLC Spiritual

Gifts Team reminds you that you can take an online spiritual

gifts assessment that will help you discover what your particular spiritual gifts are. Even if you have taken an inventory in the past, you’re being encouraged to take the 10 minutes needed to complete this new assess-ment. The results will immediately be given to you at the time you’ve completed the in-ventory, as well as be sent to the Spiritual Gifts Team via email. Please go to the KLC website (www.kiheilutheran.org) and click on the link posted there to take the spiritual gifts assessment and learn how your gifts can best be used to serve our God. For more in-formation, or a “hard copy” of the assess-ment (if you don’t want to take it online), please contact Jan Porter at 283-6111.

We are indeed “Blessed to Be a Blessing” and that is our theme for this year’s Stewardship Program.

We will start with a great breakfast party on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 8:00–8:40 am. The Men’s Hui is supplying the food and the hap-py cooks! Please come early to church and share in the tasty food and the fellowship.

During October we ask each of you and your families to thoughtfully consider what it means to be blessed by God, His Church, friends, and family. How has God blessed your life through this church?

On Oct 27, Nov. 3, and Nov. 10, please bring pictures, po-ems, lists, and stories of your many blessings to post on our “Blessing Bulletin Boards.” We hope to have them overflowing with blessings!

The biblical focus for each of the above weeks will be listed in each Sunday’s bulletin, so you can get a head start. Your valuable Pledge Packet should arrive by mail during the last week of October.Last year 73% of the active members participated in the Stewardship Response Program by offering to financially support our church. This year we have a short three-week program. We are hoping for 100% response from active members. Wouldn’t that be a BLESSING?

worship bags are located on the back table to assist kids in worship during the service. Please return bags after service.

name tags for kids are available at the back table next to the Worship Bags. Please take a moment each Sunday to put a name tag on your child so that our wonderful ohana can learn each child by name!

the keiki message takes place just before the scripture readings. Children under 12 are invited to come forward for a message just for them.

keiki time immediately follows the Keiki Message. Children age 8 and under are invited to the education room where they have circle time and a short Bible story/lesson. Children return to parents in time to participate in Communion.

nursery care for ages birth to 3. Parents will soon have a special designated place to bring their babies, toddlers, & preschoolers during 9:00 AM Worship. We will offer loving childcare for children, age 3 & under, in a clean, sanitized, and baby-safe enclosed space. A Bible lesson will be provided.

worship leaders we love to see & hear our children! If your child would like to help lead worship, here are some ways that they might do so: distribute the grapes during communion, pass out bulletins & greet people before service, say a prayer during the service, sing, play an instrument, or dance during special music time. Another way to participate as a family is to sign up to provide refreshments for after service on a Sunday. Kids can actively plan what treats to bring, go shopping, and help distribute refreshments to the congregation. Contact Dawn at 250.3557 or [email protected] to talk about these opportunities.

Cn Byr!!Do you love to babysit? We are putting a list together of youth in our congregation who babysit. We will pass this list out to our families with young children and have it available for congregation member referrals. If you would like to be included on this list, please talk to Dawn or email her at [email protected].

We also need babysitters for Sunday in our nursery. Please speak with Dawn if you would like to be part of this baby & toddler care rotation.

SEPTEMBER ANGELSThis month there is a large contingent of angels that needs to be

lifted up for their extra efforts and commitment. Rather than try to name them all, and risk forgetting someone, a couple of different groups get a KLC angel “shout out”, which all has to do with the facility expansion program. A huge mahalo nui loa to the Building Team, the Church Council, and the KLC Administrative As-sistant, who have all put in many extra hours in the past couple of weeks getting everything in order for applying for a loan with the Mission Investment Fund, as well as getting the contract signed with Viking Construction. Because of the self-less efforts that so many people have made, the expansion of the facilities is ready to begin. Mahalo ke Akua! Thanks be to God!

Thanksgiving “Adopt An Angel” ProjectAll Sunday School keiki and Jr/Sr high students will

be asking the congregation to participate in ADOPT AN AN-GEL, to benefit the recipients at the Keolahou Food Pan-try. Due to the expansion of the facilities we will not be col-lecting food to make the Thanksgiving Meals. Last year the Sunday School provided 100 meals and various additional food items to be distributed before Thanksgiving. The food pantry has requested GIFT CARDS be purchased , so we are asking for everyone to pick up a Thanksgiving ANGEL beginning Sunday October 6th, decorate it by coloring, painting, or whatever moves you and return with a donation to be used to purchase the gift cards. Once we receive back the ANGEL, a gift card will be attached on the back and then given out by the Food Pantry on November 8th and 15th, that way the family can use the gift card to assist in providing a Thanksgiving Meal. We have 120 ANGELS to be decorated and the Sunday School will be working on them during class time, but we need your help too. So please continue the generosity displayed during God’s Gifts Our Hands by coloring an ANGEL an donating for the gift cards. You will find the ANGELS and coloring material along with a donation box are located on the side of the lanai under the bulletin board. Mahalo for your support! ...Submitted by Marjorie Terluin
