The Psychology of Scent – Aromachology

We are urgently seeking technology development opportunities with key partners in the developing area

of Aromachology. Our client is a global market leader supplying materials and products for medical and

consumer applications.

Aromachology  studies the effect of aroma upon human psychology. Specific scents stimulate the

olfactory pathways in the brain and can sub-consciously induce feelings of reassurance, confidence,

relaxation, happiness and well-being, amongst other emotions. It differs from Aromatherapy, which is

associated with the use of essential oils to enhance wellbeing in a physical way.

Our client is seeking scientific evidence (academic or commercial) that such an association exists

between aroma and emotional state, and is keen to connect with experts working in this field. The

company is also keen to find commercial partners who understand how to incorporate this knowledge /

technology into a range of products.

Technology could be applied to textiles, fibres, plastics, papers, packaging or fragrance dispensers for use

in the following applications:

-  Hospital environments to reassure patients undertaking treatments  –  alleviate stress /

depression

Reduction of anxiety associated with flying, by introducing scents into aeroplane cabins

-  Impregnation of bed linen with relaxing aromas to help induce sleep

-  Building confidence around the use of medical / personal products

Reassurance of the efficacy of cleaning / hygiene products

-  Reduction of perceived pain

-  Complementing psychological counselling

Customised fragrances – e.g. energising, confidence boosting

-  Environmental marketing  – enforcing brand recognition, influencing purchasing behaviour in the

retail sector for spas, hotels, supermarkets

We have a particular interest for a variety of healthcare environments where solutions are sought that

can reinforce the consumer’s emotional well-being, by triggering feelings of confidence and

reassurance where apprehension and anxiety are more normal.

Our client is keen to find knowledgeable partners with whom to collaborate in the development of

innovative solutions. They are open to engage in a variety of activities, including joint development,

licensing and R&D relationships and are most interested in opportunities that will allow them some form

of exclusivity or enable them to be first to market.

Please send introductory information on any technology opportunity or details of appropriate persons /

companies to: Ashima Sangwan, Innovation Researcher. Thank you!
