Another phenomenal year is coming to an end, in more ways than one. So

phenomenal that it will undoubt-edly set the future scene for KJs for many decades to come. Yes, we’ve had a bit of luck here and there perhaps, but overall it has been the great support we get from all of our members, and in particular our many volunteers, club officials and sponsors that

has made the difference. This was an obvious factor that helped in once again being recognised by Athletics NSW, ranking us as a gold level club, the highest possible rank-ing. Only six other clubs in NSW achieved this level which takes place after the annual clubs review. Last year we produced the first printed edition of the annual magazine and this proved to be such a big hit that we have decided to continue the concept. I hope you enjoy the latest edi-tion.

Membership & ParticipationBoth membership and participation levels in club events surged ahead for a second straight year. We are fast ap-proaching 600 members for the year and all indications are we will make it. There were no fewer than 7 con-secutive winter events in which we exceeded a crowd of 200, including 9 events with more than 100 juniors in attendance. The third race of the season at Mt Kembla attracted a race record crowd of 228 but it was the next event that caused our jaws to drop. The cross-country meet at West Dapto eclipsed the race before with 259 runners participating, including a whopping 180 juniors! This event again doubled as our Junior Open Day and is proof positive of the success of the cross-country park in drawing juniors to the KJ fold. Overall for the winter season we recorded a total of 2757 race registrations at an average of 184 per event. This is yet another all time record and is up from 166 per event last year and 150 per event in 2007. The Summer Series was also the most popular we’ve ever had with an average of 88 per event, up from 78 per event last season. Track and mountain running events continue to be well supported by club members who enjoy the variety they provide to our other running programs.

JuniorsOur juniors continued to show us seniors how it’s done during 2009 with some fantastic results all round. Junior membership levels continued to rise steadily and this has seen a large increase in participation rates. Total junior registrations for the winter season totaled 1569 at an av-erage of 112 per race, a massive increase of 22% on last year and a 3-fold increase in just 5 years. This is a credit to our junior sub-committee and Junior Development Of-ficer Murray Smith who have worked tirelessly to ensure the kids get as much enjoyment as possible out of their involvement with KJs. I think we have easily proved to

them that keeping fit can be fun! In the ANSW events our numbers were also very strong with up to 16 KJ juniors in some age-groups competing against other clubs in the state. I must say it certainly looks awesome when almost half the state field on the start line is wearing KJ colours. Well done to all of our juniors on some great performances this year and for their noticeable improvement in form. A big pat on the back also to all of our state junior reps and especially Josh Head who won the 10 years Australian cross-country title at Nowra in August. Another KJ star in the making for sure!

West Dapto Cross-Country Park ProjectThe mother of all news came in a single phone call from a Canberra bureaucrat on 2nd September. Our application for almost $1.1 million of funding from the federal govern-ment had been successful. With the $430K already raised we now not only have enough funds to build our fantastic clubhouse but also to fully fit it out with furniture and ap-pliances etc, buy a ride on mower and tipper, and provide $330K of extensive landscaping and course excavation works. Could it get any better? I doubt it, now pinch your-self. This time next year we will already be using our new building and enjoying the benefits it will undoubtedly bring to the club and all of us as KJ members. There’s more on the project elsewhere in the magazine.

SponsorsSponsors are an important part of any club but this is es-pecially the case for KJs. Our sponsorships give us the extra capital which allows us to purchase the best equip-ment, own and operate our van and provide many other services free of charge. They have also been an impor-tant partner in helping us to win our government funding by proving we have the support of local businesses. Our major sponsor Wests Illawarra in particular has been in-strumental in this by providing the lion share of the $130K raised towards the club contribution for the clubhouse. I cannot express how grateful we are for the ongoing back-ing of CEO Phil Bragg and the Board of Wests who must surely share some of the credit for our recent good news. The Illawarra Credit Union, the major sponsor of the Fit-ness 5, has been a most enthusiastic sponsor who has helped keep this great community event as one of the best on the running calendar. We also welcomed on board new sponsors MMJ, K-Swiss and the Illawarra Sports Medicine Clinic in 2009 and hope they will be part of the exciting times that lie ahead for the club. A full list of our valued sponsors from the past year is shown inside the front cover. Please show your support in return wherever possible for these businesses that support us so much.

Club FinancesThe club’s finances have improved again thanks to record membership, sponsorship support and some success-ful fundraising efforts, headlined by the Fitness 5, Trivia Night and raffle. The Fitness 5 itself raised over $9K while the Trivia Night and raffle made over $6K combined. As mentioned earlier the club’s West Dapto project account

has swelled to almost $130K and will be used as our con-tribution to the project. The Athlete Development Fund has close to $7K and has adequate reserves to provide assistance to our growing list of representing athletes in the year or two ahead. Since its inception the fund has provided over $20,000 in assistance to KJ athletes with their travelling expenses. Club funds are as healthy as ever and should not be needed to fund any of the costs of construction for the clubhouse. Once the clubhouse is completed our usual fundraising efforts and hire fees should easily meet the costs of maintaining this facility. This means our normal club reserves will be available to keep funding all the things we currently do and to the same levels you are accustomed to.

Other EventsThe club ran another successful NSW Relay Champion-ship at Flagstaff Hill in July with a record number of teams from around the state participating. As always many club members did a sterling job in helping out in a voluntary capacity to ensure it all ran smoothly. This followed us hosting the NSW Mountain Running Champs earlier in the year. The Fitness 5 field grew in size for the third year running under the leadership of new Race Director Mur-ray Smith and the organising team. Already the Illawarra Credit Union have signed up as major sponsors for the 2010 edition ensuring the future success of the region’s longest standing Funrun. Despite all the hard work we still found time to have fun with the usual program of social events, including our Friday Feasts, Trivia Night and the City 2 Surf BBQ.

Athlete AchievementsIn the last 12 months we have witnessed some magnifi-cent achievements from our athletes. Young Josh Head winning the 10 years Australian XC Championship title was a standout as was watching Ryan Gregson finally

represent Australia at a senior level at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin. Lorraine Hince at 41 years of age finishing 6th in the open women’s event at the Aus-tralian XC Champs was impressive and followed a great year at state level. All the awards that rained down on her at our Presentation Night were richly deserved by this modest athlete. Well done also to all other KJs who repre-sented NSW at the nationals including Grace Musgrove, Natalie Van Coevorden, Hamish Paine, Lauren Shelley, Miles Waring, Kevin Batt, Kade Szakacs and Jessica Hull. At a club level it’s been great watching so many of you setting PBs or reaching new goals during the year. In particular Michael Hickman’s enthusiasm in setting age-group records in the new 75+ category in just about every KJ event has been inspiring. For the fifth year in a row we have again claimed the NSW SKINS Winter Club Premiership by a record margin and won a swag of age-group premiership titles, primarily in the junior categories where we have our "embarrassment of riches". With ev-eryone back on board again in 2010 and new athletes joining the fold every month, we can expect even better times in the year ahead.

The Year AheadYou don’t need to be a genius to know what the main focus of our efforts will be in the next year. The clubhouse construction and course upgrade will take place well into next year and will require a lot of our time to make it all happen. While we are doing this we will still be organising usual club programs plus staging the Fitness 5 and NSW Championships. The excitement surrounding the new clubhouse facility will no doubt see our membership num-bers swell in the next few years. Our Mt Kembla venue access agreement with the SCA expires next year and is likely to produce the usual fun and games in getting it renewed. If you are able to help the club in any small way with anything please let us know. Every bit of help will

make a difference in what promises to be an extremely hectic year.

Thank youMany thanks to our great committee team for yet another record breaking and suc-cessful KJ year and all the hard work put in to bring this about. I am very lucky to have the support of so many dedicated and self-less people, and so is the club. And thank you to all of our non-committee volunteers like Anne Asher, Roy Francis, Jane Cleary, Geoff Stalker, Noreen Parrish, Gareth and Kasey Mumby, amongst many others. The full thank you list is included elsewhere in this magazine so please take the time to check it out.

Best wishes,Neil BarnettPresident

Kerryn McCann Female Elite Pointscore 2009 and Winter Pointscore 2009 - Lorraine HinceLorraine won the Senior Pointscore and the Female Elite Pointscore, the Elite pointscore with a sig-nificant margin of 51 points from 2nd placed Claire Rayner. Win-ner of the Elite Pointscore in 2008, Lorraine again showed her competitiveness, participating in most races this year proving her to be a deserved winner of both awards. With steady improve-ments throughout the year, she broke 4 long standing age records and still holds many others since she re-commenced run-ning with the club again 5 years ago. After having finished in 6th place in 2008, Lorraine made her way back during the year to true form. She went on to consistently finish races in top 10 position, earning her the coveted Senior pointscore trophy.

Kembla Joggers 2009 Athletes Athlete & Most Meritorious Golden Boots Award 2009 - Lorraine HinceLorraine has been recognised by her peers as an athlete who always gives her absolute best, yet in a way that demonstrates true sportsmanship and club spirit. Lorraine is fiercely com-petitive, yet is one of the most courteous and unassuming competitors that would pass you in any race. Her perfor-mance this year has been noted as such by club mem-bers; awarding her the Athletes Athlete award. Only a true athlete could be awarded both ‘best and fairest’, whilst at the same time be recognised as having the most outstanding individual merit through-out the season. Along with her sensational club perfor-mances, Lorraine has a fantastic ANSW series; winner of her age category and 13th overall in the 10km road event at Homebush, part of the 2nd placed open women’s KJ team at both the XC relays at Miranda with the 4th fastest split of the day and the road relays in Wollongong with the 2nd fastest split of the day, 4th overall, and winning her age category at the long course XC in Nowra, 2nd over-all in the short XC at Rydalmere. These performances at ANSW events along with her National XC performance earn her the title of Most Meritorious for 2009.

Kerryn McCann Male Elite Pointscore 2009 - Paul MicaleThe year’s pointscore winner was ‘Mr Consistent’ – Paul Micale. There was no luck involved, Paul did it the logical way by finishing top 2 or 3 in all events he contest-ed. Paul seemed to be running a little quicker this year than last with low & sub 34 minute 10K’s rattled off a few times over the winter. 2nd in this year’s pointscore was last year’s winner Murray Smith, & 3rd was Elad Haas who competed in only a few events, partly due to a 1 month overseas holiday, but when he did compete it was with a lot of pace. Others in the top 10 included Done Martinoski, Josh Hewitt, and Troy Sundstrom. Troy only joined KJ’s in late June.

Over 60 Pointscore 2009 - Ray McCauleyCompeting against 18 of his peers Ray McAuley proved that not only consistency in one’s running level, but also that turn-ing up for every race on the win-ter program is the top recipe in securing this sort after award. Ray always gives his best no matter what and can always put in the “Hollywood Finish” when the finish line is in view. Pipped at the post for this award last year Ray was able to fend off the challenges from running Doc Ian Tague and Peter Asher. A worthy winner of the Over 60s Pointscore

Mt Kembla Pointscore 2009 - Trent DawsonIt would appear that Trent Daw-son loves our Mt Kembla venue. For the second year running Trent has taken out the Mt Kem-bla Pointscore. Competing in all 4 events up “The Mountain” is the major prerequisite to be in conten-tion for this award. Combined this with consistent racing and you are in with a chance. It was neck and neck up to the last race with Trent winning by the smallest of margins (1 point) from Pasco Coppolaro with Lorraine Hince a further 8 points behind. A great ef-fort from Trent and well earned.

2009 Club Person Of The Year - Pia AngelucciPia Angelucci has only been a member of KJ’s for the past 5 years. For 4 of those years Pia has been heavily involved on the club committee. Pia’s enthusiasm for the club includes many sub committee commitments including ANSW, social, medals, coaching and athlete development, Thurs-day track, race organization and junior development. This is a hefty workload that only a person of Pia’s calibre could handle. Every task she takes on is completed with thoroughness and enthusiasm. In 2008 Pia was elected club captain and has carried out that role for the past two years with aplomb. She is one of the first friendly faces that newcomers to the club see and she takes them all under her wing and shows them the KJ ropes. On top of her KJ commitments Pia manages being a wife and mother, is heavy involved with Wollongong Little A’s, holds down a demanding job as a national training man-ager that has her traveling all over Australia on a regular basis.KJ’s are very lucky to have a member such as her with such boundless energy and she is a very worthy Club Person of the Year.

2009 Kembla Joggers Most Improved Award - Janice HendersonJanice Henderson is a very de-termined competitor who can always be seen giving 100% all the way to the finish. A regular at most KJ events, she has had to step up this season to keep up with her son, Liam, who has been one of our big improving juniors. This year Janice has lowered her times across the board with many notable improvements. Some of her more significant improve-ments this year include a mas-sive 1:54 minute improvement at the tough Mt. Kembla 10km race as well as a huge 34 second improvement at the West Dapto 5km road race. On the track this year she has continued to make steady progress in her 3km times, and she is also a loyal ANSW member, always giving her best for the 35+ team.

2009 Encouragement Awards -

Susan FeiglerSusan is one of the club’s strongest and most consistent female ath-letes. Last year she was probably the form runner in the club, break-ing many club records and pretty much sneaking under the radar with her humble attitude. Her positive outlook and love of running rubs off on everyone around her and is appreciated by many members in the club. She has had a number of injuries since late last season but this has not stopped her enthusiasm for running or her support of the club or her attendance at club events. She is already back on deck ready to break more club records and like a fine wine, she keeps getting better with age. Susan is a true inspiration and we hope she’ll continue to do what she does best, perform her best and have a great time doing it.

Bridget RuttyBridget has been a member of Kembla Joggers for a number of years now with her husband, Andrew and their two children, Ben and Tom. Seemingly com-fortable to let the ‘Ruttty boys’ do their thing for a number of years, Bridget has turned things around this year. She has certainly flour-ished, improving significantly this season and showing great form on the track as well as on the road. If Andrew is not careful, she’ll be beating him soon. Bridget seems to be really enjoying her running and we hope it continues for years to come.

Nigil EmersonNigil has been a member of the club for over two years now and his steady improvement has been great to see. His enthusiasm is infectious and his ‘can do’ attitude is inspiring. He performs solidly through the range of distances and is as comfortable on the track as he is on the road or in the bush. Possibly the secret to Nigil’s run-ning success is his family, who are all good runners and keep him on his toes having to continually work hard to keep up with them. In addi-tion to his performances in club events, Nigil represented the club with distinction at ANSW events, displaying his trademark gutsy runs every time.

The 2008/2009 Kembla Joggers Summer Series was al-tered from previous seasons to allow for a shorter, simpler series with fewer venues. The Hill 60, Stuart Park 5km (original course) and Albion Park (Croome Rd Complex) venues were retired while the more popular Puckey’s and Yacht Club venues were boosted with one more race each. This was mainly due to the much easier marshal-ling and set up requirements for the courses over which the Puckey’s and IYC races are held.

During the Series a total of 777 race registrations were recorded, of which 163 of these were juniors in the 1km and 2km races. The biggest attendance for the year was 109 for the Puckey’s 5km followed by 101 for the popular 3km (female race) at Stuart Park. The attendance figures were well up on the previous year and a record amongst all Summer Series held to date.

The winner of the Hangover Handicap Running Nut tro-phy on New Years Day was the very popular Luis Cortes who recorded a time of 35.06 over the tough 4 mile Mt Kembla course. Luis dedicated the win to his late wife and fellow popular KJ, Linda Cortes. Another good crowd was in attendance for this event which is now an institution on the local running calendar.

Rafael Moriana took out the YDOIDOIT Trophy in a nail biting finish at the end. Only a handful of points separated the next wave of runners on the pointscore table, including the likes of Alan Onions, Luis Cortes, Alisa Bateman and Adrian Panozzo. Other senior runners who finished out of the placings but had good series results and showed good form included Rod Batten, Tim East, Craig Sakey, Paul Micale, Liz Meldrum and Kym Batten. With the re-cord participation levels experienced during the Winter Series just completed, the upcoming 2009/2010 Summer Series promises to be even more competitive.

The 1km Junior Pointscore was taken out by young Alex Mezedi with Casey Cleary in 2nd place, followed by Han-nah Crinnion in 3rd place. The 2km Junior Pointscore was taken out by Alex’s brother Ben Mezedi, with Scotti

Hamilton in 2nd place and this year’s big improver Liam Henderson in 3rd place. As always the ju-niors seemed to thoroughly enjoy the com-petition and relaxed format of the summer events.

The Summer Series could not have been staged without the help of a number of self-less volunteers. Many thanks to John Wilton who over the years has been a great help to me in the Summer Series. John this year is stepping down from that role to have a break. The positions for marshal organisation and junior race organisation are open and must be filled to allow us to run a safe series. Please let me know if you are inter-ested in assisting in either of these roles.

Thanks also go out to Roy Francis who is not running but still turned up to help with the marshalling for almost every race. Also to Dave Barnett, Eric and Hazel Brown, plus all of the other marshals from amongst KJ members who helped out. Thank you for your support and we hope to see all the old familiar faces during the current Sum-mer Series. Don’t forget the Hangover Handicap on New Year’s Day.

Kerryn McCann - Male Elite PointscoreThe ever reliable Paul Mi-cale wins the Male elite for the umpteenth time. Now in his 40’s Paul still shows the younger runners how it is done. Murray Smith took 2nd place just holding off Elad Haas for 3rd place. Both run-ners performed well through-out the year with Murray tak-ing 2nd place in the senior p/score as well. These run-ners were kept busy by Done Martinoski who won the last race of the year at Cordeaux Dam and Neil Barnett who always runs consistently on any course. Out of the top 5 were Joshua Hewitt and Troy Sundstrom who won the 9mile in a time of 50.20. Junior run-ners Gareth Mumby and Blake James kept the seniors hon-est and Jarred Poppett made the top 10 again.

Kerryn McCann - Female Elite PointscoreAnd the winner is Lorraine Hince, with many good perfor-mances and AGR’s behind her Lorraine had a strangle hold on the female elite p/score, not only was Lorraine good at the distance events she also ran well in the short events with 17.46 in the 3 mile and 18.30 at the Cordeaux Dam 5km. Lorraine had plenty of challengers from Clare Rayner who also had many fine performances, including a 62.56 in the 10 mile race, and veteran runner Sally Musgrove took 3rd place in what will be a memorable year for her. Other runners who performed well included junior runner Natalie Vanco-evorden, Janice Henderson who continues to improve, newly married Alisa Bate-man (nee Williams) who won the female trophy in the ½ marathon, new runner Nicle McKinnirey, junior run-ner Chloe Douglas Savage, and rounding out the top 10 was Narelle Smith who won the G Bolt trophy and Caro-line White.

Winter Senior PointscoreThe winner of the 2009 winter series is Lorraine Hince. Lor-raine only missed 1 race during the season and progressed nicely towards the end of the year. Of the many good perfor-mances her best was in the 9 mile were she finished in 3rd place overall in a time of 56.03. Her time of 36.58 in the 10km Mt.Kembla race was also outstanding. Lorraine picked up many AGR’s along the way. Congratulations on a fine win. Surprisingly finishing in 2nd place was Murray Smith who

along with co-ordinating the junior races took time out to race enough times to just sneak into the top 3. John Mezedi who had a consistent year stormed home to take 3rd place, well done to the top 3 place getters.Just out of the place getters was last years winner Trent Daw-son, el presidente Neil Barnett and the consistent Joshua Hewitt, with Paul Micale, Craig Sakey, Jana Mumby and Rod Williams, well done to the top 10 finishers and all the other runners who took part in the series.

Mt Kembla PointscoreA case of De Ja Vu for Trent Daw-son who in the closest of closest victories held onto to win the Mt Kembla p/score by 1 point, Trents run in the 9mile 61.11 and 10km time of 38.58 nailed the victory for him, and 2nd place went to Pasco Coppolaro who on several occasions before has finished in the placings, Pasco has struggled with injuries all year but ran well in all Mt Kembla races, 3rd place was the unlucky Lorraine Hince who nearly stole the trophy with a 56.03 in the 9 mile and 36.58 in the 10km, Chris Llewellyn fin-ished just behind the place win-ners along with Dean Boyten who was injured in the early part of the year, training partner Craig Sakey took 6th place, The improving Rod Williams held on for 7th place, while Paul DeNobrega, John Mezedi and Neil Barnett finished with top 10 placings.

Over 60 PointscoreAfter a great tussle Ray McCau-ley emerged as the winner of the over 60 runners. Ray has been a long time member of the club and is always on hand to help in any way possible when required. Ray now 60 is still running simi-lar times to when he was in his 40’s and is a main member in the ANSW over 55s team. Ray was kept busy by Ian Tague who ran consistently all year but injury held him back in the last couple of races, Peter Asher who has finished in a placing every year took 3rd place this year. 18 run-ners took part in the series so that shows the depth of the club for our most senior runners. Just out of the top 3 was Warren Evans and Andrew Krajew-ski, and our most senior runner Michael Hickman who at 75 ran all the races and created AGR’s in the 75+ Category in 9 of the races. Just goes to show that many of us have many years of racing left.

I want to start my 3rd annual Junior report by thanking a few people for various reasons:- to the parents of our Flying Foxes thank you for bringing your children along to our events & training. Their participation & socialising is paramount to the growth of the club.

- to my fellow junior committee members, thank you for providing the support & taking on some of the tasks needed to keep the junior members in-formed & catered for.

- to Geoff, Pia, & Noreen who turn up on Tues-days, Thursdays, & Saturdays in good weather & bad to give their time, experience, guidance, & en-couragement to coach some of the KJ juniors.

During the winter we lost long time business sup-porter of the Flying Foxes, Uncle Pete’s Toys. Our sincere thanks to Suzanne O’Brien for the years of support that she & late husband Mark gave to KJ’s. We trust Suzanne enjoys her new endeavours.

I can’t really single out any particular junior Winter Series event that was a stand out. To me they all were. Juniors everywhere, enjoying the good weather, having a go at the various races & staying on for a play and a chat af-terwards. Obviously the Junior Open Day & the Club’s Cross Country Championship drew the biggest crowds, but with a total of about 250 junior members, every race was well attended. At the recent Junior Presentation day, we handed out many awards & could have chosen many more athletes as worthy winners. There were 70 partici-pation award recipients for the 2009 Winter Series.

There were many new junior members in the club in 2009, who all seem to know an existing member or 2 in the club. Some of these new members seemed to take to the Thursday night track relays with a passion.

Performance wise we had many juniors willing to run for Kembla Joggers at the six ANSW Winter events held in Sydney, Nowra, and locally. Congratulations also to those athletes selected to compete for NSW at the National XC championships. Those athletes were Hamish Paine,

Jessica Hull, Miles Waring, Grace Musgrove, Natalie Van

Coevorden, Kade Szakacs, and Joshua Head. Top 20 finishes were recorded by most. Special congratulations to JOSHUA HEAD who won the 10yrs boys with a com-manding burst 500m from the finish line. Apart from Ryan Gregson of recent times, you may almost have to go back to Kerryn McCann for the last KJ junior to win a junior National XC title.

Memorable moment this year was from the very muddy course for the XC relays at Miranda. Down 1 runner to make up an u/20’s female team. I approached Camp-bell Rutty, who had already raced through the mud in an u/14’s team, to see if she would go around again for the u/20’s team. After an initial face drop & a glance at her mum, Campbell took up the challenge to run over/through the mud again. The girls were quite competitive & picked up a silver medal for their efforts.

Until next winter, as always take care, and stay healthy over the summer by participating in KJ’s Summer Series, Thursday night track (which has some good short races), Little A’s, or swimming/surfing at the beach.

Lorraine Hince10km Mt KemblaBy Pia Angelucci

The KJ Medal is awarded to recognize perfor-mances of true merit above and beyond what would normally be expected. Lorraine has had an exceptional year. Coming back from injury, she steadily improved beyond her 2008 best and sub-sequently gained her nomination for three events; West Dapto 10km (36.20) where she sliced 2 min-utes from her 2008 time, the National XC champi-onships where moved through a very competitive field to finish 6th in the open women’s category, but the race she was awarded the medal for was the 10km at Mt Kembla where she finished 3rd overall with a 2 minute 24 second improvement on 2008. Having represented Australia in 1994, Lor-raine is continuing to race impressively and results she is presenting, makes her a worthy recipient of this award.

The Kembla Jogger medal is one of the most presti-gious awards that our club offers. A medal is awarded only for a performance at either a KJ race or when an athlete is representing KJs or NSW/Australia. It is for a performance, which is truly outstanding, in rela-tion to that athlete and their previous performances. Therefore, a medal can be awarded to athletes of any ability, who have gone that extra mile in lifting their performance over and above what could be rea-sonably expected of them.

Thursday night track racing returned to the halcyon days of the 90s this year with week-ly attendance averaging around 50 athletes each night. Over the 12 months the average attendance split between junior and senior races was almost 50/50. Our most popular nights were recorded on the first two races of the W Squared Series when 73 and 76 attended. The 4 person handicapped team relays were also a winner as was the nomi-nated time races.

The first day of KJs track championships back in February was almost washed out with the 400m having to be delayed until the 3rd week. However, the few valiant soles that braved the soaking conditions put on a courageous performance

The relaxed and unregimented atmosphere of our Thursday night races is a big winner with the juniors with much socialising going on pre race. However, when they get on the start line it is down to the serious business of track racing. And it is just as competitive at the rear end of the race as at the pointed end. Then the socialising continues.

The list of track records broken at and away from Beaton Park in the past 12 months was once again impressive. Ryan Gregson, in his last year as a junior, rewrote KJ’s track record book from 800m to 5km in both the Open and 15-19 age group. Ryan’s consistent European campaign was re-warded with his inclusion in the Australian team for the World Track Championships in Germany. Another of our talented members in the 15-19 age group is Gareth Ryan. Gareth was also burning up the track earlier this year setting a new Open record for the 400m with a nippy 50.97.

The W Squared and the Flying Fox Series was once again a resounding success.

Hazel Brown’s canny handicapping once again ensured an exciting and tight finish to the W Squared Final. Bill William-son (whom the trophy is named after) commented that it was the closest and most thrilling final he had seen. The electri-fying atmosphere and excitement of the spectators spurred the competitors to 4 PB’s and 8 seasons’ best. There was just 35 seconds between the winner and the last to finish.

Just as spectacular to watch was the Junior Flying Fox 1500m Handicapped Final. 37 young athletes chased each other for 3 and 3/4 laps of the track resulting in 11 PB’s being recorded. Muray Smith’s excellent handicapping culminated in all but a couple of the competitors being in the final straight at the same time creating a mass finish and anxious mo-ments for the officials.

Many thanks to Jim Hennessy, Bill Williamson, Greg Mack-ey, Narelle Smith, Done Martinoski, Murray Smith, Dave Bar-nett and Pia Angelucci, for their most welcome assistance throughout the past 12 months.

Kembla Joggers would like to thank the Beaton Park management for their ongoing support with our track

fundraisers. Beaton Park management allows free entry to all competing athletes on fund raising days.

There was quite a buzz of anticipation at the start of the winter season due to quite a number of fresh faces in ANSW ranks to reinforce the already well-accomplished athletes that had done so well before. In the final analysis we had over 138 compete for the club over the season with a record 15 runners in the U14 girl’s age group alone. We also had the addition of several fine tri-athletes from Jamie Turner’s stable that also added greater respectabil-ity to our line up in terms of depth and quality.

Also included in our line-up for the season were Australian marathon representative; Lauren Shelley, Australian ju-nior cross-country and track representative, Chloe Tighe, and Kevin Batt, one of the outstanding up and coming junior runners of his age in the country. Ryan Gregson continued to excel as a track and cross-country athlete with some outstanding runs during the season that saw him represent Australia at a junior level, followed by se-lection for Australia in the World track championships in Berlin. Stephen Brown also proved his mountaineer-ing running abilities by being selected for the Australian mountain running team after finishing third in the Austra-lian championships.

At a State and schools level KJ’s had many representa-tives at the national cross-country championships held at Nowra. One, of particular mention, is former Australian representative, Lorraine Hince, who has ran particularly well this season, finishing in second place in the State Short-Cross Country championships to gain well-de-served selection for the NSW team at the nationals. All-in-all KJ’s did particularly well on the representative front in 2009, not to mention winning the prestigious Winter Club trophy for the fourth year in a row from a very wor-thy challenger, Sutherland, who always make us fight all the way. This year KJ’s had a substantial margin over all other clubs due to the quality of our runners and the great depth that we had in numbers

In terms of the 2009 Winter premiership, KJ’s did well,

particularly in the juniors where we traditionally perform at a high level. Both the U12 boys and U12 girl’s teams finished on top of the premiership whilst the U14 girl’s team showed great perseverance in recovering from a slow start to take out the premiership with some fine wins over the final stages. The U18F team showed greater consistency to lead virtually from start to finish to win the premiership for the second year in a row. The U18M team was too strong for some exceptionally good teams in the competition to also record a fine victory in the U18M pre-miership as well.

From a senior’s perspective we probably didn’t perform as well as previous years with only the Men’s 35+ team clinching a premiership. Even so we were competitive in most age groups. The senior women’s team led for much of the winter season and recorded a remarkable upset at long-course State X/C championships by taking out the gold medal. The men’s open team also went well at the State championships taking bronze after missing out on silver by the narrowest of margins. Even without Ryan

2009 continued the tradition of Kembla Joggers Mountain running with a number of highlights as follows:-

KJ Mountain Running Summer Series

This series of 8 races during the summer was only mod-erately attended but with visitors from outside the Illa-warra at every race. Again the high interest race was the scenic but difficult “Stalkys Horrible Half Marathon” held in January with 45 runners tackling the 400 metre climb from Figtree School to Mount Burelli. Phil Whitten and Alisa Bateman were worthy series winners.

NSW Mountain Running Championships

These Championship races were held on the traditional KJ uphill/downhill course commencing at and finishing at Mount Kembla lookout. KJs Ste-phen Brown and Lauren Shelley were worthy winners from Tim Cochrane/Phil Whitten and Alisa Bateman/Mela-nie Foster. The junior boys division was won by Charlie Brooks.

Australian Mountain Running Championships

These Championships were held in Victoria with KJs, Stephen Brown and Trent Dawson competing. Stephen’s 3rd place earning him selection in the Australian team for the World Cham-pionships for the 5th year in a row.

World & Commonwealth Mountain Running Championships

These Championships were held in Italy and England re-spectively with Stephen Brown coming 100th and 30th in the respective races.

The 2009 -2010 KJ Summer Series will see a reduction to 6 races plus the NSW Championships scheduled for 21 February 2010 on the Mount Kembla uphill course. Phil Whitten will succeed Geoff Stalker as race organiser. Well done Geoff for doing a top job over several years and good luck Phil who will carry on the tradition.

Mountain Running Report 2008/2009 By Dave Higgins

Gregson the men’s team won a bronze medal at the state cross-country relays at Miranda against some of the strongest opposition ever assembled at this event. The men’s Open team also caused a major upset at the Nov-ice X/C championships when it defeated a very strong Sydney Striders team to win the teams gold medal. Kevin Batt also had a strong run in taking out the individual sil-ver medal after contesting the lead for much of the race.

Overall, it could be classed as another outstanding sea-son for KJ’s and this year’s competitors should be able to look forward to some of the awards that come from run-ning for KJ’s in the ANSW winter championships, namely the opportunity of some low priced Skins which come with taking out the Winter Club Trophy.

We now look forward to an exciting summer track season before renewing our efforts for another season of road and cross-country championships next winter.

The 2009 Fitness Five Fun Run was the 20th running of the event. Held on April 5th, it attracted 550 participants which was slightly up on the last couple of years. This year seemed to attract a large number of family teams & a large number of local fitness industry groups. The weather on the day was good for both running & for the organisers.

Canberra athlete (and 2 time Commonwealth Games rep) Andrew Letherby attacked the course from the start and coming up the home straight a small but vocal crowd, including yours truly, were screaming encouragement for Andrew to break the course record. Andrew’s time of 14:22 mins was just 1 sec short of Yousef Abdi’s record of 14:21 mins. In the women’s race it was the strength of the marathon runners over the early speed of the track runner. KJ runners Chloe Tighe & Anita Keem set the early pace before Anita’s strength enabled her to pull away. Anita’s winning time was 17:04 mins. First KJ males across the line were Barry Keem 14:53 (3rd overall), from Paul Mi-cale 16:18 mins and Miles Waring 16:34 mins. First KJ fe-males across the line were Anita Keem 17:04 mins, from Chloe Tighe 17:43 mins and Claire Rayner 17:53 mins.

The Fitness Five Fun Run is the largest single day fund-raiser by the club and as such requires as many members as possible to help out on the day. The success of the event is measured by the satisfaction of the runners & their return the following years. This year’s event raised over $8,000, with the proceeds being directed to the almost commenced ‘West Dapto Cross Country Park’ clubhouse construction.

This years event received continued support from our local major sponsor, the lllawarra Credit Union and from supporting organiza-tions including Wollongong City Council, WINTV, i98FM, The Illawarra Mercury, and Rebel Sport. These sponsors generously supported the event either through financial

assistance, advertising and promotion of the event and/or through the provision of services such as vouchers. Club supporters D&D Traffic Management and Wollongong Pure Water were on hand to provide traffic control and refreshments out on the course. Kembla Joggers would like to thank all the event sponsors.

The KJ’s sub-committee that organise the Fitness Five Fun Run meet regularly in the months leading up to race day to ensure that all permits are obtained, volunteers are marshaled, entries are received & collated. The commit-tee also looks at ways to improve the event. This year it was decided to spend a few hundred dollars & get race bibs (numbers) professionally printed, as well as trial ‘online registrations’ via a third party. The online regos proved very popular with about 250 of the 350 pre-race entries being lodged this way. Being provided with regis-tration details in an Excel file dataset, the task of collating the entries was streamlined.

Special mentioned goes to veteran KJ Michael Hickman who, as he has done in the last few years, single handedly canvassed many local cafes, shops, business houses for vouchers/coupons. Michael obtained some $2000 worth of vouchers/prizes that were given out on the day or held over for Trivia Night.

Next years race is tentatively penciled in for 28th March 2010.

Kembla Joggers Coaching 2008/2009

By Coaching Team

This year saw KJ’s hold a full summer and winter coaching program. Accredited coaches; Geoff Stalker, Noreen Parish and Pia Angelucci have held regular, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday session with the valuable assistance of Time Crinnion with the juniors on Tuesday and Murray Smith on Thursday afternoon and Saturday morning track sessions.

Attendances have steadily increased, with junior numbers during the winter cross-country season at all time highs. Senior are also seeing the benefits of fartlek and speed sessions; improving their strength, stamina and race times. Track sessions are an opportunity to ‘sharpen up’ and both seniors and juniors are becoming more confident in their track abilities. Saturday morning sessions are a good opportunity to test your speed and pacing skills and even bet-ter, a great way to stay in touch with fellow KJ members during the summer.

Coaching is available free of charge to active, registered, KJ members.

…Yes, yet another fabulous KJ Social season has quickly come to an end. This year, we sampled many different restaurants throughout Wollongong and the surrounding suburbs at our Friday Feast dinners. We saw lots of new faces – young and old, who joined us for a laugh and a good feed. Friday Feasts will recommence again from March next year.

ANSW events, again this year, were attended by many KJ fami¬lies. The ongoing tradition of stop¬ping for a meal on the way home after a hard day of run-ning (and cheering) always completed a great day out. With a great time had by all, this tra¬dition will surely continue next year...

Kembla Joggers Trivia Night, held in July, was a great success again this year, raising much needed funds for the West Dapto Cross Country Park and athlete development funds. As always the teams fought it out amongst pizza and laughs. The KJ juniors got in on it too, making this a great family night out.

The ANSW Road Relays was a popular social event…and was generously supported by our KJ members with a yummy supply of cakes and other tasty sweets which were sold on the day. Our friendly KJ juniors cheerfully helped sell cakes and hot food all day long. Again, thanks to all of you who helped out on the day. The day ended, as al-ways, with lots of run-ners and helpers going to dinner at Aqua, and as always, Anna excited us with her many special delights…yum yum.

The City to Surf contin-ues to draw a great KJ’s crowd, and this year was no different. This beauti-ful day was enjoyed by all…and thanks to our amazing helpers, who on the day, cooked up a storm on the BBQ and cleaned up afterwards too!

Let us know if you have ideas for social events next year, or if you would like to help out on the committee. We hope to see you over the summer series, and stay tuned for details of the ‘Brewery Bash’ in December…our official

Christmas get together. Until next year, smile and keep on running...

What a difference a few months makes! In just April this year I was still scratching my head about how we were going to raise the extra funds which would enable us to start building our dream clubhouse. Then along came a number of federal government stimulus measures to kick-start the economy particularly in areas more prone to the effects of unemployment, like the Illawarra. One of these funding initiatives, the national $650 million Jobs Fund program, was brought to my attention by local Throsby MP Jennie George.

I was lucky enough to attend the Town Hall meeting with prime minister Kevin Rudd a few weeks later where he indicated projects would be supported that had “skin in the game”, ie had funds to contribute to the project, and were “shovel ready”. Clearly we were both and so started the sleep depriving 4 week process of getting our funding application together.

Much of our information was already prepared but we still had mountains of work to do. The construction certificate arrived from Council only 3 weeks prior so the timing of the funding process was impeccable for us. With the help of a number of our committee reps we put together what I thought was a proposal that couldn’t be ignored, after all the project really sells itself.

We could have just applied for the balance of funds to build the clubhouse but instead we decided to go for the ‘dream’ version and apply for almost $0.5 million in ad-ditional funds. These funds would be used to fully fit out the clubhouse with appliances, security systems, air-con, signage and furniture etc. The majority though would be for extensive course landscaping with feature gardens ($180K), course upgrades including returfing, levelling and drainage works ($150K). On top of this we also have approval to purchase the very best front end ride on mower and Kubota utility vehicle which will help with future maintenance and course set up. As I said before, the dream version!

On September 2nd the call came and at first the dulcet tones of the person delivering the news was more akin to someone about to inform us that our bid had failed. When the words “your application has been successful” came down the phone I literally went numb. Dreams do come true, hard work does pay off and good ideas are eventu-ally realised. With $300K of state government and council grant money already in the bag, on top of the $130K of money raised by the club, we now have over $1.6 million to turn this into one of the region’s best and most unique sporting facilities. What’s even better your club KJs will be the proud owners and managers of this facility.

As the name suggests the idea of the Jobs Fund grant money is to help create jobs in the economy so it is ex-pected that our funds will be released very soon meaning construction can start before year’s end. I expect comple-tion of the building phase will be by the middle of next year. The course excavation works will be a more pro-gressive thing but still all funds need to be expended by June 2011. In the meantime we still have to decide on the successful tender from the quotes we have, finalise our lease agreement for the Park and work with Coun-cil to decide how the project will be managed until it is completed.

So there you have it. At long last we will have our own clubhouse facility. And not your every day, ordinary one. This one will have a large function room, kitchen and sepa-rate canteen, toilets, showers, disabled facilities, meeting room, garage, storage area, paved outdoor undercover area and large balcony with a vista overlooking the park to the west. The building will be quite impressive architec-turally, like something from a Colorbond catalogue, not a four walled shed. You will be able to enjoy it at KJ events as well as possibly hiring it out for personal use.

Well done to everyone who has helped us achieve this fabulous outcome and for the patience and support you have given me along the way. It’s been a hard slog but well worth it without any hesitation. I am most apprecia-

tive also of the tremen-dous support we have received from Wol-longong City Council, Minister Dave Camp-bell MP, and federal MPs Jennie George and Sharon Bird, who have all played a posi-tive role in ensuring a successful outcome.

Enjoy!

THANK YOU THANK YOU By Hazel Brown

Neil Barnett, our club president extraordinaire and a KJ Life Member, for all the countless and thankless hours he puts into our club every year. It is, in large part, due to him that our club is counted as the best in NSW and probably in Australia.

Jim Hennessy, Life Member and dedicated Thursday track races official. Jim has served his time as club treasurer, tea lady and countless other roles. A stalwart of the club, despite the fact that he can’t race anymore.

Bill Williamson, founder member of KJ’s and a Life member, whose enthusiasm continues to support runners, both elite and beginners and encourages them to achieve their personal goals. Bill always turns up for the Thursday night track races to help out on the finish line.

Eric Brown, Life Member, KJ’s Vice President, member of the race organizing committee and the medal’s committee. Eric officiates in any capacity every Thursday track race and in any winter/summer event, without hesitation. He is, in large part responsible for the good condition and maintenance of the West Dapto cross country course. Actively involved even though he no longer races.

Hazel Brown, Life Member and non runner, who organizes the track events every Thursday night and assists Gary in handing out handicap times for winter events. She is also a member of the medal’s committee and organizes the engraving of trophies for all events.

Dave Higgins, club treasurer, registrar for KJ’s and for ANSW. Dave handles all monetary matters for our club, including investments. He is a great contact man between our club and ANSW and can be called upon to do any job, no matter how dirty at cross country events.

Darryl Weir, our web master and very hard worker. A true club man, despite the fact that he doesn’t run (although Stephanie and I are working on that) Darryl is also the first aid officer, and committee man. He drives the KJ’s van to City to Surf and sets up and cooks the BBQ so that runners have refreshment and a chance to socialize after the event. He is our club photog-rapher, coordinates the KJ’s handbook and annual magazine. Please remember to thank him when you have a chance.

Gary Howard, our race handicapper, one of the most thankless jobs in our club. He puts in so many hours to ensure that everyone has a chance to win events and as the close finishes have shown, he does this very well.

Wests Illawarra, our major sponsor, without whose support, the club would not be as successful as it is today.

Paula Crinnion, who valiantly volunteered to take several jobs this year. Paula has organized the marshalling roster (a most difficult job) and has also taken over as social secretary, extending our club socially is a major aim of KJ’s and Paula has done this magnificently.

Jennifer B. Burns, who has been a marvelous backup for Paula during the season, particularly with regard to organising the marshals for our road and cross country events.

All of the junior girls who helped to man the canteen at the Road Relays….girls you were fabulous.

Tim Crinnion, who is ALWAYS available for working bees and is a major helper at the NSW Road Relays.

Wollongong City Council, many thanks for their support and cooperation in the development of our west Dapto facility and their help in ensuring that the Fitness 5 is so successful every year.

Gareth and Kasey Mumby who have helped throughout the year in putting out the flags on our cross country course.

Hugh Motbey, who is always just a phone call away from offering his services to develop the West Dapto course. As Hugh is no longer a runner, this is really appreciated.

Roy Francis, who works tirelessly at every working bee and attends all races as a volunteer. This is to be doubly applauded as Roy has not been able to run in the last season.

Pia Angelucci, our female club captain and tireless committee worker. She puts in so many hours training athletes and sup-porting Paula with marshalling and stays cheerful all the time. Pia is also a member of the medals committee.

Narelle Smith, who is ALWAYS there to help out, whether it is with juniors or helping to issue handicaps, or helping Hazel at the track.

Stephanie Smith, who has taken charge of registering the juniors prior to each winter race…..and she doesn’t run (although Darryl is working on that)

Murray Smith, our junior development officer and director of the Fitness Five, who is ever helpful at both winter runs and track meets. He is always available for working bees, helps to stack the van after races and is a very active committee man. No wonder he got club person of the year for the last season.

Peter Issa, assistant race organizer, Fitness Five Committee member and a cheery addition to our club.

Done Martinoski, our male club captain and stand in club secretary for this season. He does an outstanding job in keeping ANSW members informed about venues and times for these winter events. Like Murray and Pia, he will volunteer for any job and forego racing if there is a shortage of marshals.

Kym and Rod Batten, our dunny men, who have ensured your comfort at Mt Kembla events for several years now. Not the most attractive of jobs, but they do it without pause. Remember to thank them sometime.

Andrew Rutty, who drove our half marathon and City to Surf bus for free so that you can all forget the hassles of parking for these events.

Geoff Stalker, who has organized the very successful mountain running series for the past few years and is also one of KJ’s coaches.

Noreen Parrish and Ian Hatfield, who give up countless hours to coach our athletes, with the results shown in improving performances both on the road and on the track. Neither of these people are runners of KJ events (although Noreen is a sprinter of great talent)

Mark Everton, our race organizer, without whom you would not be racing. There is much behind the scenes time and effort to put on our events. Mybe some of you could volunteer to help Mark out and make his life a bit easier.

Carolyn Dews, committee person and invaluable source of ideas and contacts with regard to the development of our West Dapto facility. She is a much needed level headed adviser at our meetings.

Jane Cleary, who has taken over the ordering and distribution of KJ’s clothing lines from Karen Llewellyn and her sister Liz. Jane took this job on at short notice and has filled the position very well indeed.

Greg Mackey, who is a dedicated Thursday Nighter and is ever ready to assist on the finishing line…….he is also a great motivator of our juniors both prior to and during the races.

Ann Asher, our dedicated tea lady who tends to the refreshment details of our runners at both winter events and also ANSW races.

Brian Baird, for casting his eye over our legal documents and for his assistance as a club sponsor.

Dave Barnett, organizer of special events, KJ Committee member, medals committee member, Fitness Five and statistics man for ANSW winter events.

Paul Wright, who put his hand up this year to help out in any capacity. He is a member of the Fitness Five, West Dapto and Junior committees.

John Burns, He is very supportive of KJ’s and is responsible for the detailed road management plans which have to be put in to council for all of our road runs, including the NSW Road Relays.

Beaton Park Leisure Centre and Christin Jurman, who have allowed KJ’s free entry to the park when we are organizing fund raisers such as the Jeans for Genes race.

Sonja Martinoski, who has supported Done all year as secretary, when this position failed to be filled.

To all KJ’s who marshal without complaint, often doing much more than their fair share of duties. We need more of you, for without you, we would be unable to conduct our races.

The Fitness Five Committee of Murray Smith (director),Wayne Montefiore (non runner),John Burns, Peter Issa, Neil Bar-nett, Paul Wright, Dave Barnett, Dave Higgins and Tim Crinnion, who, once more, put on a superb event.

The West Dapto Committee of Neil Barnett, Eric Brown, Carolyn Dews, Dave Higgins, Dave Barnett, Murray Smith, Sonja Martinoski, Darryl Weir, Tim Crinnion and Paul Wright, who do much work behind the scenes in order for our club members to have the best possible facility to race and train on. And soon we will have a club house….watch this space!

ALL OF OUR WONDERFUL SPONSORS, WHO ALLOW US TO DO THE INNOVATIVE THINGS WHICH MAKE OUR CLUB THE BEST IN AUSTRALIA

Wests Illawarra, Illawarra Credit Union, D&D Traffic Management, Transelect, Wilson’s Bikes, Rapidcool Airconditioning, IPS Investment and Planning Services, Illawarra Sports Medicine Clinic (Phil Parle), Kennards Hire, Rebel Sports, Premier Illawarra, K-Swiss, BlueScope Steel, Wollongong City Council, DGB Lawyers(Brian Baird), Martin Morris and Jones, Bowel Cancer & Digestive Research Institute Australia.

Many, many thanks to you all
