Mahmooooo’s Message

We should all be extremely proud of our club's accomplishments as we close the current Kiwanis year with our last meeting. We have served our communities and our youth well. Its been possible be-cause of our members hard work, dedication, and a passion to serve (yes with a smile). We turned fifty years old this year and we contin-ue to be an effective service or-ganization in Hacienda Heights and our neighboring communities. There is hardly an event in our communities where we are not a part of the effort, not to mention the events which we initiate and invite our community to be a part of. We are represented by our

members in so many ways, that at times it seems exhaustive. We do what we do because we believe wholeheartedly in our mission statement. We are dedicated to "serving the children of the world" and we are "dedicated to improve the world, one child and one com-munity at a time". As we approach Kiwanis 100 year anniversary, lets keep the momen-tum on our sides. Lets expand our impact not just in our communi-ties, lets do it worldwide. Lets do all we can to save lives. Lets push ourselves to raise funds and do-nate to our worldwide project "ELIMINATE". It would be a great way to celebrate our 100 year anniversary in Indianapolis next year by reaching our goal of rais-ing $110 million for Maternal & Neonatal Tetanus. Lets engage and challenge everyone we know in and out of our communities to join us and make a difference.

We must continue to tell our sto-ry, invite all to join us, more help-ing hands we have, more we will be able to do. Always remember the Formula tag, "Love it, Share it, Live it". Lets refresh in our minds, the objects of Kiwanis (where can you find them, second page of this bulletin), stay enthusiastic about helping others, and always keep alive the spirit of giving. Lastly lets come together at our club's Promotion and Installation of Officers & Board of Directors on Saturday, September 27, for camaraderie, friendship, good fun, and celebration of our accom-plishments, as we welcome Victo-ria Davidson as our new President, and embark on a brand new year of great service under her leader-ship.

Our meeting was called to order by El Presi-dente at 6:00 PM. Tina Banes asked us to face the flag and led us in the pledge of Allegiance. Officer Robert Barba stood proud and patri-otic as he led us, filling in the singing of our pat-riotic song. Susan Jack-lin delivered a passion-ate invocation. Club members in attendance were Grace Chan, Tina Banes, Robert Barba, Kathy Young, Susan Jacklin, Victoria Da-vidson, Lon Salgren, Dave Wallach, Nancy Bashir, and Izzeldin Os-

man. Our guests in attendance were Ms. Jasminda Khan, Faculty Advisor to Wilson Key Club, who was intro-duced by Tina Banes. Our other guest was Kalene Wong, President Mt. SAC Circle-K who was introduced by Dave Wallach. The dynamic trio, Kathy, Susan, and Nancy led us in the sing-ing of our “Welcome Song”. We thanked Da-vid & Teri Malkin, and Anna Wu for repre-senting the club at the Golden Sparks Lab launch at the STC Cen-ter. Golden Sparks re-

cently visited our club as Anna Wu’s guests and donated $100.00 to the ELIMINATE project. Thank You Golden Sparks. We thanked Dave Wallach and Kathy Young for attend-ing the Inter-Club with Covina South Hills. Lon Salgren was offered thanks for delivering our cook trailer to Los Altos for their Band/Entertainment Boosters, and safely returning it back to the storage. We also thanked Dave Wal-lach & Lon Salgren for helping with the KI-WIN’S PTP car wash.

Dave Wallach was also thanked for attending the Key Club D35W DCM and Ice Cream so-cial. Dave Wallach and Lon Salgren were our super heroes this week-end attending multiple events. Thank You both for your dedication and hard work. We present-ed Ms. Khan with a Cer-tificate of Appreciation, a Starbucks gift card, and our club’s 50 year pin for her valued ser-vice as the Key Club Ad-visor. Ms. Khan is no longer able to serve as the faculty advisor due to her new position as a

counselor. We have a new faculty advisor to the Wilson Key Club, Ms. Jessica Delavigne, a former key clubber her-self. Lon Salgren sold the “Split the Pot” tick-ets; a winning ticket was pulled by Kalene Wong declaring a very elated Robert Barba as the winner of $120.00 ($12.00) Kiwanis Dol-lars. In Charlie Huff’s absence who was as-signed the task, Dave

Wallach in his usual helping way performed the pin & badge checks, and helped collect cans for Del Haven. El Presi-dente circulated our donation cans. We col-lected $3.00 for Chil-dren’s Hospital, $2.00 for Relay for Life, and $3.00 for ELIMINATE. A total of $22.00 was con-tributed by generous members for Happy/Sad dollars. We did not have a Mr. or Mrs. K for

this meeting but are pleased to report that all present were friend-ly, and that everyone shook each other’s hand. Great spirit guys, let’s keep it up! El Presi-dente rang the bell at 6:40 PM, at which time the meeting was ad-journed as we sang “Hail to Kiwanis”. Thank you to all who attended and made the meeting enjoyable.

Happy & Sad Dollars

Dave W – Happy we are a very busy club. Happy Miss Khan and Kalene could attend our meeting. Lon – not sure if happy or sad. His neighbor has been bringing over loaves of bread for a couple of weeks now. Not sure if it is an Cultural thing or not. He had a loaf at the meeting if anyone want-ed it, please take it. Got a new I Phone 5 and need to learn how to work it Nancy – Happy to be here. Happy Sara is doing a fantastic job in Theatre as she is playing a 9 year old girl in the current production. Sad about the hot weather. Izzey – Happy about the weather. Mahmood – Can’t believe that Izzey hired a Taxi to transport a dog from LA Puente to Ventura. Happy Miss Kahn was able to make the meeting. Happy for Kalene from Mt Sac Circle K joining us. Happy that Nancy was able to make the meeting. Happy dollar for Charlie even, though he is not in attendance. And just because he is a happy kind of guy. Grace – not sure if happy or sad – Monday after-noon she flew into Oakland with her sister. They had to take BART to her home. First they had to take the Airbus to Pleasanton to catch BART. They were on the platform waiting for BART when they were approached by some guy. He came over to them and he seemed to be drunk. There were

only 4 people on the platform and couldn’t under-stand why he came over to them. He tried to talk to them and all Grace could do was think random thoughts about what he was going to do to them, rob them, stab them, throw them onto the tracks. BART came and they hurridely jumped on, it was the longest 2 minutes of her life. Miss Kahn – glad she was able to make the meeting Robert – happy to be here and happy for a short meeting Victoria – happy to pass out the new agenda for the meetings starting on Oct. 1st. Excited as Presi-dent Elect.

Walnut Valley Installation

By Mahmood Bashir On Friday, September 19, Walnut Valley Kiwanis Club hosted their In-stallation Dinner, where they promoted their 2013-2014 officers and Board of Directors, and installed their 2014-2015 officers and Board of Directors. LTG Robert Davis was in attendance for the promotion, and LTG Designate Mahmood Bashir was also in attendance for the In-stallation. Our club members, Dave Wallach, Kathy Young, Wilson

Mach, and Nancy Bashir were also in attendance for a successfully Inter-Club, and to offer their support to our sister club. Thank you guys, specially our new-est member Wilson Mach for attending his first Inter-Club, and moving us closer than ever to our goal of completing a Su-per Round Robin. We have one more op-portunity on Tuesday, September 23 for those of members who have not yet attended an Inter-Club this year. Come and join us for La Puente Industry Club's Installation Dinner that day. Hope to see many of you there to show our support to our mother club.

By Kelley Ray, LTG, Goldstone KIWIN'S On Saturday, September 13, Goldstone KIWIN’S held our very first car wash to support our Minor Emphasis, Pediatric Trauma Program. The five clubs provided buckets and towels to use through-out the day, and, of course, the hands to wash cars. Little did we know that we had planned a car wash for the hottest predicted weekend of the year! We waved signs to advertise and washed all the cars that stooped by. We were even able to tell a few customers a little bit more about Pediatric Trauma Program and how KIWIN’S is involved. Kiwanis advisors and parents who came to drop off volunteers were our best customers, as few others wanted to stop in the scorching 108-degree weather. We are extremely grateful for their unfaltering support! Needless to say, there was a much-needed water fight with the hoses and buckets of water! Despite the heat, we were able to raise $101.00 for our Minor Emphasis!

Delhaven Work Day Part II September 20th, 2014

By Lon Salgren Saturday September 20 was the second work day at Delhaven Community Center. The purpose of the event was to plant roughly 8 magnolia trees along the medium strip between the street and sidewalk in front of the Community Center. We also prepped and installed synthetic turf on a back portion of the property. The area had already been mostly graded and leveled and interspersed with rock. We finished leveling it with a couple of garden rakes before the company with the synthetic turf arrived. They had us unload two very large and heavy rolls of turn from the back of a trailer. Then they com-pacted the area using a gasoline-powered tool similar in size to a lawnmower. I learned that the installation of the synthetic turn is similar to installing carpeting. Once the area had been leveled and compacted a roll of weed block was laid over the dirt. Next the synthetic turf was rolled out and adjusted using the same tool that you slam with your knee to set in place and stretch. Next long common nails were nailed into the turf to hold it down. Along the seam they used a long U-shaped staple. I commented that I was surprised that they used common nails which are not coated with a rust preventative as a galvanized nail would be. I was told that they want the nails to rust and get a good bite into the dirt. Earlier we also had unloaded about 20 bags of synthetic turf deodorizer. It looked like kitty-litter, but was of a finer size. I was told that it serves two purposes. They used a gaso-line-powered tool that rotates an 8" diameter plastic brush to fluff up the blades of the synthetic turf. Then they use a spreader that you would use to fertilize a lawn to distribute the TD (turf deodorizer) onto the turf. The TD helps to hold the blades of the turf up and deodorizes it if an animal urinates on it.

Meanwhile others were pruning a medium-sized tree closer to the street . I noticed they were using a folding saw with a blade no longer than 8" to cut branches on the tree. It was very tedious work and wore out those that were taking a turn at the task. I had a better tool for the job (a battery powered sawzall) in my van but unfortunately I had left the batteries at home. I returned home to retrieve the batteries which made the job MUCH easier. The lot that much of the work was being done on previously housed portable building that was being used as an eye clinic. It had recently been removed after completion of their study. Toward the middle of the lot there was a large pile of dirt that needed to be moved from a concrete slab further forward on the lot to fill in the area surrounding that tree that was being trimmed. It required MANY wheel barrel loads of dirt, but we finally finished moving that pile of dirt. We stopped for lunch of pizza, sandwiches, red beans and rice, macaroni salad and chips. Afterward those that were still on hand finished their tasks of pruning, planting and moving dirt, etc. Tim Seal of Delhaven commented several times that this was a GREAT bunch of High School kids we had there that day. Thanks to all the Key Clubbers, KIWIN'S and Kiwanis Club members (Dave Wallach, Mahmood Bashir, Izzy Osman and Lon Salgren) that came out to help complete the second phase of this project. There were also volunteers from California Pizza Kitchen, Home Depot and Sheriff volunteers there to help too.

Story by Dylan Tran Our school’s club rush took place on September 19, 2014 during lunch. It was my first time promoting Key Club to new and old students alike and it was a great experience. Every-one in our cabinet was given roles, from giving out things to having spirit battles with KIWIN’S. I had an Instagram cutout that I made and had people take pictures with it. In my opin-ion we were successful because I saw many people flocking over our booth. Overall, my experience with our club rush was good and I am hopeful that we will succeed in this com-ing year.

Key Club D35W DCM & Ice Cream Social September 13th

By Sarah Yee Key Club member from Los Altos High School At a park in Monrovia, seals gathered along to become one big family. It’s a time where we all reu-nite, and get updated on the latest key club news. Everywhere you turn was a smiling member hap-py to see others and get in spirit, and I am proud to be one of those smiling members. Activities to start off the event broke off any silence in the air, and the opportunity to meet new seals, those who are new and old to the club. Ice-breakers like trying to have just 5 feet on the ground of a group of ten, really created flipper to flipper bonds. The spirit session pumped everybody up! New year, New Cheers! Everybody was stomping, clapping, and shouting seal pride! Fall Rally is coming around the corner, and it seems like we’re going to be loud and proud! The heat was climbing up to the high 90’s and was getting to us all. A break to soothe the throats of those shouting sounded more than great. It was the perfect idea for ice cream to cool off and have a chance to socialize with oth-ers. The variety of flavors, strawberry, vanilla, and choc-olate hit the right spot. The atmosphere was full of laugh-ter, giggles, and pure joy full of friendly lionfish!

By Vivian Tiet, the Member Recognition Coordinator for Division 35 East. When I first saw the post on the D35e website for our September DCM, I was super excited to find that we would be making ribbon leis. I had always seen other members wearing them, and even people at school wore them to rallies and football games, so I was eager to learn how to make one myself. When the Google Form was released, I immediately marked the box to make not one, but two ribbon leis. I had also recently become a part of our Division Leadership Team, and was excited to introduce myself to my fellow elephants on a different level as our Division Member Recognition Coordinator. When I got to the DCM, we prepared the ribbon, and as people began to come, we played ice break-ers, which are some of my favorite things about Key Club. I met so many new people! The weather was hot, but the spirits were happy. Everyone was delighted to see each other. At the DCM, we went through the usual agenda, and new events such as our movie night fundraiser and fall rally were dis-cussed. While listening to club reports, I took many ideas from other schools’ club rush techniques, as many had already recruited new Key Clubbers, and used them at my own school the following week. I had an opportunity to introduce myself, and was able to see Daanyaal acknowledge our outstanding members, officers, and clubs. After going over the agenda, we learned some new cheers, and it was great to see the elephant pride out there. Seeing everyone so spirited really inspires me to be just as spirited as well. When it came time to learn how to make ribbon leis, Vivian Leung led us, and was a great teacher. However, ribbon lei making didn’t come naturally to me as it did to others, though I eventually got the hang of it, and even made some for my friends when I got home! At the end of the day, I was sad to leave my friends, as I always am. I love my Key Club friends so much, and they continue to inspire me every day with their spirit, dedication, service, and kindness. I hope that I am able to serve this amazing group of people and let them know how appreciated they are. Key Clubbers continue to amaze me every day, and our September DCM was just another one of those days.

By Allie Chang, Co-Historian Wilson KIWIN’S On Saturday, September 20th KIWINS and Key Club members went to the Del Haven Communi-ty Center in La Puente to help refurbish the cen-ter. The members woke up bright and early in the morning to help refurbish the community center. People came together from KIWINS, Key Club D35W and Key Club D35E to work to to-gether to serve for the community. There were about 30 members that attended the event. They first began by raking and making sure that the dirt was leveled and there were no big rocks, while others began sawing the extra dead branches from the tree. After they made sure that the dirt was leveled they watered the dirt,

while others began transferring more dirt on top of the damp dirt and began spreading it out. After they finished trimming the tree we all helped to transfer all the branches to the dump-ster. Finally we finished and all our sweat, tears, and pain all paid off. You can see the difference from when we first started till when we end-ed. Glen A. Wilson KIWINS co-historian, Meghan Hernandez says, “It felt gratifying that I was able to help in the refurbishing of the Del Haven Com-munity Center. I was able to help transport dirt and soil to another part of the community center which needed it.”
