Ensuring ongoing relevanceOnline MRWs, otherwise known as eMRWs, come in two forms: updating and static. Static references are one-off publications, much like a printed encyclopedia. These works may take years to compile as they collate information and data. Like any MRW, they do not cite every study ever reported, but they try to be comprehensive, relying on the contributions and discussions of world-leading experts to ensure they cover every aspect of a topic.

However, static publications soon start to age. They remain factually correct, of course, and are often useful references for background research, identifying seminal journal papers or as a quick guide to tried-and-tested techniques.

But in our information age, online publications are more dynamic: it is possible to update content regularly and independently of any print

Entries are not created on the fly, but through carefully structured research, drafting and review by experts. Accuracy is the top priority.

Users must be sure that the information they obtain from MRWs is accurate, so experts in the field offer their advice, feedback and criticism throughout the process.

In collaboration with potential authors and renowned independent experts, an MRW’s editorial board (the work’s chief editor and experts recruited in their field of expertise) develop the table of contents and flesh out what each entry should cover. Authors, each world leaders in their field, are invited to contribute to the work.

Like the journal peer-review process, before any text gets approval for publication, the

Editorial Board reviews every submission. They carry out thorough checks and evaluate the text. Does it include all the relevant data? Is the data from reputable sources? Have the authors adopted a good methodology for developing their work? How do authors source their references? Does their text answer all the questions that a user is likely to ask?

As any scientist knows, this review process can lead to heated debate, however peer-review remains the most effective way to double-check data, question assumptions, clarify confusions and fully test the robustness of all scientific work, whether a simple experiment or a review article.

WHERE DID CONTENT ORIGINATE?

First published in 1914 by Professor Fritz Ullmann in Berlin, the Enzyklopdie der Technischen Chemie (as the German title reads) quickly became the standard reference work in industrial chemistry. Generations of chemists have since relied on Ullmann’s as their prime reference source. Further German editions followed in 1928 and 1951. The printed 5th Edition marked the introduction of this major reference work to the English language in 1985, with updated volume editions publishing in 2002 and 2012.

In 1997, Ullmann’s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry became available online, allowing easy round-the-clock access and regular content updates.

WHO KEEPS THE ARTICLES UP-TO-DATE?

Fully international in scope and coverage, the contents have been compiled under the supervision of a renowned global Editorial Advisory Board. The board is also responsible for identifying articles that require an update and selecting emerging topics that will be treated in a new article. New and updated articles are published every two months.
