OBITUARY

It is with sadness that we announce the death of Tom Leather.

Tom lived at Meeting House Farm at Newton for nearly 50 years with hiswife Pam. During his time there he ran a small market garden and atvarious times kept, pigs, hens, goats and sheep. He played an active role invillage life, notably with Kingsley Cricket Club where he was involved withthe youth team, captained the second 11 and was club chairman for manyyears.

After Pam died he found the large home and garden difficult to managewithout her and so moved to Top Road Kingsley. He continued to live there, until failing health forced him to move nearer family in Worcestershire inJune last year. Despite deteriorating health Tom tried his best to settle in,making links with neighbours and village institutions. However, his heartwas always in Cheshire and on 30 April it gave up the battle and he passedaway peacefully in hospital.

His funeral was held at Redditch Crematorium on 18th May for family only.No flowers, but donation to MacMillan Cancer Care, who supported Pamand Tom through her illness, are welcome.

Kingsley BookwormsNext meeting 14th June 2018 at the Hurst Chapel at 7.30pm

Last month we talked about “Miss Smilla’s Feeling for Snow” by Peter Hoeg. It istranslated from Danish and has had excellent reviews. On balance, this book waswell received by the group. Although it was quite wordy, most people found itinteresting. Many of us had been unaware of the colonisation of Greenland byDenmark which is referenced throughout the book. The thriller was a good read aswell. We scored the book 3.7 out of 5.

This month’s book is “The Far Cry” by Emma Smith. It is set in the 1940s andtells the story of a teenage girl’s journey to India. Emma Smith wrote The Far Cryin 1949 when she was 26. She had travelled to India in 1946 with a team ofdocumentary film makers including Laurie Lee. The book was revived in 2002 bySusan Hill (novelist) who found a paperback edition in jumble sale.

In April we visited a number of events at Weaver Words, Frodsham’s literaryfestival. The programme was varied and really enjoyable. We saw Gyles Brandreth,Ian McMillan and Zia Chaudhry among other. We’re very luck to have this on ourdoorstep. Another literary festival, close to home, is Gladfest at the GladstoneLibrary in Hawarden. We’re looking forward to seeing Sarah Perry, an authorwhose books we have read and enjoyed. The festival runs over the weekend inearly September.

We meet on the second Thursday of each month and everyone is welcome to joinus at any of our meetings or events. We also have a number of friends who followour reading list and send it comments from time to time. Meetings start at 7.30pmand are held at the Hurst Chapel. If you want more information, please contact meon [email protected] or call me on 07799 067 457. We have also gotour own Facebook page called Kingsley Bookworms.

Kingsley Walking Group

On 25 April, we enjoyed a walk from Ness village. Starting from TheWheatsheaf pub, we walked down to the Dee estuary, then through theancient village of Burton, with a diversion for an impromptu guided tour of theparish church, before heading back to Ness via Burton Wood. Aproximately5.5 miles. An attractively priced lunch followed at The Wheatsheaf. Twelve ofus took the walk, on a fair-weather day.

This month’s long walk was on and around Hope Mountain, starting in Caergwrle. We had glorious weather and the spring flowers were at their best. The views fromthe top of Hope mountain were wonderful taking in everything from Snowdonia toHelsby Hill. While we ate our lunch, we were able to watch the Airbus Beluga takeoff from Broughton.

Kingsley Walking Group have two walks each month: on the second Tuesdaythere is a long walk of 7 - 8.5 miles (bring a packed lunch); on the lastWednesday a short walk of approximately 5 miles with a coffee break andpub lunch. We meet at the Community Centre at 9.30am for the short walksand for the long walks in January and February. Note however an earlier starttime of 9.00am for the long walks from March to November.Information on the walks programme may be found on the Walking Club pageof the Kingsley Village website. The Red Bull Spring Fayre

To see a horse and its rider trotting gracefully upon the by-ways of Kingsley is a fairlycommon occurrence. To see a rider in top hat and tails wearing a gold effigy of a bull's headon a chain around his neck, ringing a bell and sitting astride a unicorn is a different matteraltogether. So it was on a beautiful spring afternoon in early May.The horseman, the new and self-appointed Mayor of The Red Bull Kingsley, wassummoning the village folk to attend the Spring Fayre and crowning of the May Queen. The villagers heeded the call and were not disappointed. The weather was glorious and the scene magical as the Mayor sat upon his unicorn, addressed the multitude and invited Isabelle to sit upon her throne and be crowned MayQueen for the coming year.Beside her stood Martha, last year's queen, who graciously relinquished her crown. The festivities began and the sun beamed upon them all. It was really a day for children whoplayed games and shrieked with glee. The poor adults had to console themselves with beer,it's always tough on the parents. The afternoon wore on and the laughter never abated; on such a wonderful day everythingseemed to be going to plan and then.....oh dear! We'll come to that later! No event can be staged without careful thought and the organisers, the helpers and thecontributors should all give themselves a pat on the back for their efforts. The beneficiarythis year is Kingsley Youth. There is one group who deserves special mention as they busy themselves behind thescenes and can sometimes be forgotten. A huge thank you then to the staff of The RedBull; to Tim who manned the patio bar, to Emma, Mary and Imogen who tended the mainbar and hurrah to the burger queen herself...Lindsey!The afternoon grew late and it was soon time for the ultimate event, the golden finale, thefinal conflict....the ill- disciplined, the unprincipled fiasco that is the Tug o' War.Last year there were cries of foul play and cheating; this year's event veered towards theshortcomings of a late night brawl in the bar of the House of Commons. Ciaran began bychanging ends and taking the 'muscle' with him. Then someone informed the referee thatCiaran's rope was attached to a tree; could it get worse? Ciaran had more 'tuggers' thanTerry and again the referee was found wanting, a pitifully inept adjudicator who laterconfessed he was bribed by Ciaran to the tune of three pints of lager. Terry's team didn'tstand a chance, in fact they didn't stand up at all. It was all over in a flash, or a heap! Terrygraciously offered his hand but Ciaran was too preoccupied with an Irish jig and taunts of "Iwon, I won, I won."As I intimated before, it really was a day for the children! The afternoon crept imperceptibly towards evening and the revellers sat outside or retreatedto the music in the bar. A few sat out in the front and watched as the sun droppedmelancholy behind the trees as it bid its last fond farewell to Kingsley's 2018 Spring Fayre.

Clerk to the Mayor.
