Definitions

Graeme Goldsworthy has summarized a definition of the Kingdom of God as

"God's people in God's place under God's rule."

Anthony Hoekema has described God's Kingdom as "the reign of God

dynamically active in human history through Jesus Christ, the purpose of which

is the redemption of his people from sin and from demonic powers, and the

final establishment of the new heavens and the new earth."

George Eldon Ladd notes that "The primary meaning of both the Hebrew

word malkuthin the Old Testament and of the Greek word basileia in the New

Testament is the rank, authority and sovereignty exercised by a king.

A basileia may indeed be a realm over which a sovereign exercises his authority;

and it may be the people who belong to that realm and over whom authority is

exercised; but these are secondary and derived meanings. First of all, a kingdom

is the authority to rule, the sovereignty of the king."

John 18: 15 Simon Peter and another disciple

followed them as they brought Jesus to Annas.

(Now the other disciple was acquainted with

the high priest, and he went with Jesus into

the high priest's courtyard.)16 But Simon

Peter was left standing outside by the door

Mark 1:

14 Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed

the gospel of God.

15 He said, "The time is fulfilled and the

kingdom of God is near. Repent and

believe the gospel!"

Colossians 3 :2 Keep thinking about things above, not things on

the earth,3 for you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in

God.4 When Christ (who is your life) appears, then you too will be

revealed in glory with him.5 So put to death whatever in your

nature belongs to the earth: sexual immorality, impurity, shameful

passion, evil desire, and greed which is idolatry. …You also lived

your lives in this way at one time, when you used to live among

them.8 But now, put off all such things as anger, rage, malice,

slander, abusive language from your mouth.9 Do not lie to one

another since you have put off the old man with its practices

12 Therefore, as the elect of God, holy and dearly loved, clothe

yourselves with a heart of mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness,

and patience,13 bearing with one another and forgiving one

another, if someone happens to have a complaint against anyone

else. Just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also forgive

others.14 And to all these virtues add love, which is the perfect

bond.

Mark 1:

21 Then they went to Capernaum. When

the Sabbath came, Jesus went into the

synagogue and began to teach.

22 The people there were amazed by his

teaching, because he taught them like one

who had authority, not like the experts in

the law

23 Just then there was a man in their synagogue

with an unclean spirit, and he cried out,24 "Leave

us alone, Jesus the Nazarene! Have you come to

destroy us? I know who you are --- the Holy One

of God!"25 But Jesus rebuked him: "Silence! Come

out of him!"26 After throwing him into

convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a

loud voice and came out of him.27 They were all

amazed so that they asked each other, "What is

this? A new teaching with authority! He even

commands the unclean spirits and they obey

him."28 So the news about him spread quickly

throughout all the region around Galilee.

1. The group displays excessively zealous and unquestioning commitment to its leader and (whether he is alive or dead) regards his belief system, ideology, and practices as the Truth, as law. 2. Questioning, doubt, and dissent are discouraged or even punished. 3. Mind-altering practices (such as meditation, chanting, speaking in tongues, denunciation sessions, and debilitating work routines) are used in excess and serve to suppress doubts about the group and its leader(s). 4. The leadership dictates, sometimes in great detail, how members should think, act, and feel (for example, members must get permission to date, change jobs, marry—or leaders prescribe what types of clothes to wear, where to live, whether or not to have children, how to discipline children, and so forth). 5.The group is elitist, claiming a special, exalted status for itself, its leader(s) and members (for example, the leader is considered the Messiah, a special being, an avatar—or the group and/or the leader is on a special mission to save humanity). 6. The group has a polarized us-versus-them mentality, which may cause conflict with the wider society. 7. The leader is not accountable to any authorities (unlike, for example, teachers, military commanders or ministers, priests, monks, and rabbis of mainstream religious denominations).

8. The group teaches or implies that its supposedly exalted ends justify whatever means it

deems necessary. This may result in members' participating in behaviors or activities they would have considered reprehensible or unethical before joining the group (for example, lying to family or friends, or collecting money for bogus charities). 9. The leadership induces feelings of shame and/or guilt iin order to influence and/or control members. Often, this is done through peer pressure and subtle forms of persuasion. 10. Subservience to the leader or group requires members to cut ties with family and

friends, and radically alter the personal goals and activities they had before joining the group. 11. The group is preoccupied with bringing in new members. 12.The group is preoccupied with making money. 13. Members are expected to devote inordinate amounts of time to the group and group-related activities. 14. Members are encouraged or required to live and/or socialize only with other group members. 15. The most loyal members (the “true believers”) feel there can be no life outside the

context of the group. They believe there is no other way to be, and often fear reprisals to themselves or others if they leave (or even consider leaving) the group.

Mark 1: 29 Now as soon as they left the synagogue,

they entered Simon and Andrew's house, with

James and John.30 Simon's mother-in-law was

lying down, sick with a fever, so they spoke to

Jesus at once about her.31 He came and raised her

up by gently taking her hand. Then the fever left

her and she began to serve them.32 When it was

evening, after sunset, they brought to him all who

were sick and demon-possessed.33 The whole

town gathered by the door.34 So he healed many

who were sick with various diseases and drove out

many demons. But he would not permit the

demons to speak, because they knew him.
