As we close out the 2011 model

year and prepare for the 2012

year which will be our 25th, we

want to give credit where it is

due. The 2011 Scion XB 5-door

vehicle is a good mixture of

truck like car nearly perfect to

college entry level students. First

it’s power by a proven 2.4 Liter

DOHC 16-valve VVT-I 4 cylin-

der engine that produces 158

horsepower. Cranking out 22

miles per gallon in the city and

28 miles per gallon on the high-

way, the Scion XB is perfect for

those with a small budget. This

engine is matted to a four-speed

sequential automatic transmis-

sion and equipped with electron-

ic power steering. Front and rear

disc brakes and sport tuned inde-

pendent MacPherson strut front,

torsion beam rear suspension for

some nifty handling.

Power rolls smoothly to the

pavement on P 205/55R 16 all

season tires with fancy looking

wheel covers.

For a vehicle with a price tag of

just under $18,000, we found it

to be pleasant to say the least. It

has Star Safety System-vehicle

stability control, traction control,

anti-lock brake system with

brake force distribution and

brake assist along with smart

stop technology. Feeling safe in

a small vehicle is not a very

common thing, but we must

admit we felt pretty safe in

Houston rough and tough traffic.

The fact it was raining so hard

on Christmas Eve we were

impressed with the way the

Scion XB handled in tough turns

while in bad weather conditions.

The vehicle safety features con-

tinues with driver and front pas-

senger dual stage air bags along

with driver and front passenger

seat side air bags and front and

rear side curtain air bag. Throw

in tire pressuring monitoring

system and side impact door

beams and first aid kit, kind of

makes you think we are talking

about an expensive luxury tour-

ing sedan.

Inside the Scion XB is equipped

with Sport front bucket seat with

fabric trim and 60/40 split fold-

flat rear seats. A tilt/telescopic

steering wheel with audio con-

trol give the driver a true sports

car feel.

The center console with sliding

armrest goes very well with

Pioneer 160-watt AM/FM/CD

with six speakers, iPod/USB

connectivity, Aux audio jack and

all this with Quad cluster instru-

mentation with tachometer, digi-

tal speedometer and multi-infor-

mation display.

Other features include remote

control entry, cruise control, rear

window defogger and rear priva-

cy glass.

With the New Year around the

corner we want to invite you to

roll with us as the King gets

behind the wheel of some 2012

models.

www.pvpanthers.com2012 MITSUBISHI LANCER: INSURANCE INSTITUTE FOR HIGHWAYSAFETY (IIHS) TOP SAFETY PICK FOR FIFTH CONSECUTIVE YEARCYPRESS, Calif., Dec. 15, 2011

/PRNewswire/ — For the fifth

year in a row, a vehicle in

Mitsubishi Motors North

America, Inc.’s, (MMNA)

model lineup is one of the select

vehicles to be named by the

Insurance Institute for Highway

Safety (IIHS) as a “Top Safety

Pick.”

The stylish and versatile

Mitsubishi Lancer compact sport

sedan (except Ralliart and

Evolution) joins an elite group

of 2012 model vehicles that

meet the Insurance Institute’s

stringent criteria for vehicle

crash testing.

“When we launched ‘Top Safety

Pick’ in 2005, consumers had 11

models to pick from,” says IIHS

president Adrian Lund. “It’s

tough to win, and we commend

auto manufacturers for making

safety a top priority.”

In order for a vehicle to be

named a “Top Safety Pick” by

the Insurance Institute, a car

must earn a “good” rating in the

organization’s three critical areas

of crash test analysis (the

Institute’s scoring system con-

sists of ratings of “good,”

“acceptable,“ “marginal” or

“poor”):

High-speed side impact crash

testing. Evaluation of seat/head

restraints for protection against

net injuries in rear impact crash

testing

Building upon this impressive

vehicle’s sales success and safe-

ty award recognition, Mitsubishi

Motors has expanded the Lancer

lineup by introducing a new

2012 Lancer SE AWC model

that includes the company’s

proven and capable All Wheel

Control (AWC) all-wheel drive

system - along with an impres-

sive array of standard features

and amenities - at a starting

MSRP of only $20,195.

Earnest and Maud Day saved

their best for last because Walter

Edgar Day was their youngest

child. Born in Corsicana, Texas

on March 18, 1926, Walter

would grow up to become a leg-

end and his works will live for

generations to come. He attend-

ed G.W. Jackson High School in

Corsicana and it was there he

developed into one of the state’s

finest athletes. Participating in

football, baseball and track and

field Day loved athletics. Once

he graduated (1944) his served

our country in the United States

Army, returning in 1947. Taking

advantage of a scholarship to

Huston-Tillotson University in

Austin, Day continued his career

in sports. In the spring of 1950

he graduated with a B S Degree

and was hired as the head coach

at Corsicana in the fall of the

same year. The ever popular

and energetic Day quickly got

the team rolling wining three

state titles in his nine years

there. He later would move on to

E.E.Worthing High School in

Houston as a swim coach as

well as assistant to the football

staff. But the job came open at

historic I.M Terrell High School

in Fort Worth and Day took the

position. It took a while but the

aggressive Day made them a

winner as well. His efforts the

first year in integration caught

the state’s attention and Day

moved on to become a national

figure.

Keeping his love for sports

intact, Day moved into other

fields thanks to his Master’s

Degree from Texas Southern

University and his

Administration Certification

from University of Texas-

Austin, Day entered the adminis-

tration profession. He served as

Vice Principal and Principal of

I.M. Terrell High School until it

closed in 1973. But the show

was just beginning for the leg-

endary coach turned administra-

tor. Day served as Assistant

Director of Secondary Education

and later as Pupil Personnel.

Finally Day was named the

Principal of O. D. Wyatt High

School and he remained there

until he retired in 1986.

His first 15 years of retirement

Day spent collecting data and

writing books about the success

and triumphs of all Texas Black

Schools prior to integration. He

coined the phrase

“Remembering the Past with

Pride” collecting information

dating back to 1920 setting a

standard no one can match.

That brings me to the PVILCA

and Day being one of the

founders along with the late

Marion T. “Japp” Jones the late

Johnnie People and others.

Serving as the Executive

Director of the organization,

Day made all his findings avail-

able and Reggie Brown put them

on disc and we presented them

to then University

Interscholastic League Athletic

Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt.

So when you are sitting at the

Frank Erwin Center looking at

your state championship basket-

ball program seeing the accom-

plishments of the black schools

right alongside the UIL schools,

please thank God for Coach

Day, because that is his work.

Remembering my first meeting

with the legendary coach I recall

him telling me to move forward

with King-Size View. It was cer-

tainly an honor for such a legend

to thank well our little works

when he has done so much.

Day met the love of his life in

the lovely and talented Annie

Jewel Sanford (“Wheatley

Graduate) while a freshman in

college and the couple were

together more than 60 years.

When asked about it Day would

simply smile and say “I must be

doing something right”.

On November 14, 2011 Coach

Walter Day passed way and was

buried a week later. But his

memories and the work he had

done will live for many years to

come. I thank God for the

opportunity to have met a man

of Day’s caliber and will cherish

his memories for the rest of my

life!

When taking on a difficult task,

it helps to be passionate about

the task and your goals. The one

theme of my entire interview

with Prentice Goods, founder of

The Houston Launch Pad

(THLP) was his passion for

helping. Along with Jennie

Johnson of Creative Funding

Solutions, these two filled the

room with drive and hope. We

sat in his modest office near

Reliant Stadium and Prentice

showed what passion can

accomplish.

Goods grew up on Houston’s

North Side and grew tired of

watching good people’s lives

destroyed by drugs and violence.

He is a graduate of the

University of Houston and

majored in Computer Science.

He resolved to do what he could

to change the world.

THLP is the creation of Prentice

Goods. Founded in 1998 as a

transitional living facility for

homeless men, most of who are

recovering from substance abuse

problems. Over time Prentice

saw that many of the people that

entered his program were veter-

ans. This led to a gradual shift

which focused on the needs of

displaced vets and their unique

needs. Goods believes that these

people fought for our country

and in the process something

broke inside some of them and

he wants to help repair the dam-

age. He developed a relationship

with key people at the Veteran’s

Hospital and was put in touch

with veterans that could benefit

from the programs that THLP

offers.

Early programs involved build-

ing relationships with Rice

University, The Houston

Rockets, The Houston Astros,

The Houston Texans and The

University of Houston. This pro-

vided tickets to allow homeless

vets attend sporting events and

feel like part of mainstream

society.

The success of the program led

the Texas Rehab Commission to

contact them. THLP branched

out to supportive employment

and vocational adjustment train-

ing. Programs also include

resume writing, mock interviews

and actual placement.

As things grew, Goods devel-

oped contacts with key players

in veteran’s aid organizations

and was able to write a grant

with The Department of Labor.

The grant was titled HVRP

which stands for Homeless

Veteran Reintegration Program.

The HVRP is a national program

that provides funs for organiza-

tions to assist homeless veterans

find meaningful employment in

the community.

THLP offers supportive services

such as bus passes, gas vouch-

ers, TWIC cards and licensing

assistance. These simple services

often make the difference in the

ability of the veteran find

employment or living on the

street.

The services currently provided

at the facility include substance

abuse counseling, coordinating

twelve step programs, help with

family dynamics and more basic

issues such as appropriate cloth-

ing and an address to provide to

prospective employers.

The most valuable facet of the

services offered by THLP are the

training programs. Most recent-

ly, the Launch Pad recently

began working with railroad

contractors to train people to lay

track. This six week program

teaches all aspects of track

repair and replacement.

Currently, of the first eight grad-

uates of the program, six are

working and off the streets. That

is a 75% success rate!

Another employer using the pro-

grams offered by THLP is

Aramark Services. The jobs

were based in Louisiana and

THLP was able to provide bus

transportation, interim hotel

stays and meals until the new

employees could support them-

selves. They will be cooking for

crews on offshore drill rigs.

According to Prentice, The

Launch Pad will not target day

labor or temporary jobs. They

want to locate jobs that will

offer a living wage and provide

a secure future for those that

enter the program, commit to

stay sober and work for their

future; this can be difficult as

some of the guys in the program

have criminal backgrounds.

THLP is looking for employers

that are willing to give the veter-

an with a problem past a chance

and believe that people deserve

a second chance.

One way to obtain this goal of

securing jobs is to host in-house

job fairs. During one event, a

security company was able to

interview ten candidates and

hired seven. In the fourth month

of the current grant year, THLP

is at 50% of their placement

goals and is anticipating far

exceeding their goals for the

year.

Another aspect of the program is

to offer only the training needed.

So many programs train the

homeless in several areas with

no clear purpose or end. THLP

is attempting to focus training

on the eventual job and tries to

place its people sooner so they

can become self supporting

sooner.

Many of the veterans in the pro-

gram are recruited by outreach

workers. They come from the

VA hospital, various shelters and

areas where homeless vets hang

out. They will also accept refer-

rals from friends and family.

THLP is currently managing two

halfway houses and is in the

process of securing a third. The

goal is to offer a one stop shop

for the needs of their residents.

They hope to offer training,

counseling, placement, trans-

portation and other needs under

one roof.

In order to enter the program, a

veteran has to have his letter of

homelessness and a copy of their

DD-214 (the government docu-

ment that chronicles military

history and discharge). Then an

evaluation is made. Those with-

out a criminal past are more

quickly trained and placed,

sometimes in a couple of days.

At the right side of Goods is

Jennie Johnson of Creative

Funding Solutions. Creative

Funding is an organization

devoted to grant writing and

funding research. She has been

able to work with Goods to

secure the grants that have

allowed THLP to grow and

thrive. With a father and brother

with prior military service,

Johnson is the ideal person to

lead the fundraising charge for

this program.

One of Jeannie’s goals is to rec-

ognize the unique issues that

prevent some vets from func-

tioning in the mainstream of

society and address those issues.

Factors such as Post Traumatic

Stress Disorder are often unrec-

ognized and undiagnosed. Many

veterans have no idea what serv-

ices are available and have little

idea on where to look for

answers. Often these people

“check out” and need a push in

the right direction to get them

back into society.

The model of THLP allows the

program to take the needs of the

employer and tailor the training

to the job. This allows a fast turn

around and puts people to work

much faster.

One question that frequently sur-

faces is what can an employer

do? If you have jobs and need

trained and qualified people,

THLP is a good place to start.

Employers receive many tax

credits, training reimbursements

and other benefits for using

these programs. A case manager

and employer advocate are

always available to resolve tran-

sition issues and help these

employees be the best they can

be. The success rate of placed

employees is often higher than

employees hired through con-

ventional means.

If you want to help, have jobs

that require well trained employ-

ees or know someone to refer to

this program, THLP can be

reached at: http://www.houston-

launchpad.i8.com/ or call (713)

667-1031. Sponsors are also

needed to support the new hous-

ing program. Most of all, jobs

are needed that will fit with the

needs of this apprenticeship pro-

gram.

Anyone who is familiar with

Historically Black Colleges and

Universities (HBCU) have expe-

rienced grief, disbelief and anger

because of the suspected hazing

death of drum major Robert

Champion after the Florida A &

M University (FAMU) Florida

Classic football game on Nov.

19.

While this senseless case is still

under investigation by the

Orange County Sheriff’s

Department, another recent

arrest of three other band mem-

bers of FAMU: Aaron Golson,

19, Sean Hobson, 22 and James

Harris, 23 for battery and hazing

of band member, Bria Hunter on

Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 only added

insult to this already horrific

crime. Reportedly, she was

transported to a hospital on Nov.

7th and diagnosed with blood

clots in her legs, deep bone

bruising and a cracked femur.

She fingered these band men as

the perpetrators.

Black College bands in a nut-

shell are a mainstay within the

Black community. They are

akin to the Black Church, the

cornerstone of the community.

They have performed at top-

notch events such as: N.F.L.

Super Bowls to Presidential

Inauguration activities. They

have entertained us and made us

proud for many, many years.

They have taken us on musical

journeys that last a lifetime.

They offer a marching musical

escape from our everyday has-

sles. They can take us way back

with renditions of rhythm and

blues. They can take us to

church with that good old

gospel. They can make us move

our bodies with pop music.

They can give us chills with

beautiful patriotic songs. Or

they can make us reflect on our

heritage with soulful sounds.

Whatever the genre of music,

often times, we live vicariously

through these bandsmen and

bandswomen. And as for the

dance ability, none can compare.

Simply said, “We got rhythm.”

Yes, we definitely have a long

lasting love affair with our Black

College bands.

Show-stopping, high-stepping

and titillating, are but a few of

the words that are used to

describe our iconic Black

College bands. With nicknames

like: ‘Ocean of Soul’, ‘Marching

100’, ‘Marching Thunder’,

‘Human Jukebox’, and ‘Sonic

Boom of the South’, hundreds of

Black College bands have enter-

tained millions and produced

many successful professionals in

all walks of life. So when some-

thing as antiquated and unneces-

sary as death by hazing occurs,

we collectively shake our heads,

gasp and say “OMG!”

Now that we are over the shock,

we must collectively let the

young college musicians know

that no organization, no group,

no club or band is worth the

death of one collegiate, future

professional. One can’t ever

place a value on a life.

We must mobilize! We have to

meet and get organized. We

have to spread the word, that

this is unacceptable. Stop the

violence, no more Black on

Black crime. Get involved.

This training has to begin as

early as middle school and con-

tinue on through college.

This is more than our communi-

ty being under attack from with-

in. It’s sheer survival of the

great entity known as the ‘Black

College Band’.

For those of us that choose notto follow traditions and doc-trines of men, this is not a happytime of the year, but rather a sadone. This causes pain and suffer-ing when so many of our fleshlyfamily members, and/or thosethat profess to be followers ofChrist (Christians), choose to doso. As true followers of Christwe cannot, and will not;(Matt.10:32-39; 2Tim.3:12-17;1Pet.4:1-7). This hurts ourFleshly feelings, and it goesagainst our Carnal wants, (ourBellies) (Rom.16:16-19;2Cor.10:1-7; Gal.5:16-26;Phil.3:16-21; James4:1-10).Those striving to follow Christ(Christians) are commanded byChrist through his apostles, notto observe or give heed tofables, traditions, doctrines, andcommandments of men; forthese things are Idle> (free fromlabor, at leisure) (Matt.12:35-37, 1Tim.1:4, 2Tim.4:3-4,Titus1: 13-14, Col.2:8-10 andverses 20-22). The command-ments of God through Christ andhis apostles, edifies the SpiritualMind and strengthens the NewSpiritual man in Christ Jesus,(Rom.12:1-2; 2Cor.5:14-17;Eph.4:20-24; Col.3:1-10).Christians must observe allthings that Christ commandedhis Apostles (Matt.28:20;John17: 20-21; Acts 1:1-4;2Pet.3:1-3; 1John4:5-6; Jude1:16-19). ‘Tis a season that isfull of Vanity, decorations, eat-ing in a gluttonous manner, drunkenness and fables; whichare lies. Now let’s look at somelies that have been put in placeby man, Santa (so-called), ridingin a sleigh pulled by flying rein-deer, and going down a chimney,of course we know this is a lie.“Santa Claus”, Father Christ/masand or Kris Kringle, derivedfrom Christ/Kindle, meaning,“Christ Child“ this is an abom-inable LIE. “This began inGermany, among Protestantdenominations”. How many liescan one tell, or be a part of andbe right with God? Especiallylies involving and surroundingGod’s Beloved Son: in whomHe is Well pleased (Matt.17:1-8). Christians MUST speak andDO the TRUTH, if we are ofChrist, through his apostles’Word, John17:14-21). Can any-one prove by the inspiredWord, that there were three wisemen; if we cannot, how can weknow it’s true, we cannot?

Think about it, children are

taught that lying is wrong;except in some cases, one being,of ALL things, the unauthorizedcelebrations dealing with ourLord and savior Jesus Christ. This is shameful and DEADLY,to soul salvation. Why would aChristian teach damnation toanyone, especially to theirCHILDREN? There are noexamples and or commands forChristians to observe Christmas;thereby being unauthorized byChrist and or his apostles. Thisalso sends the message to chil-dren that, participating in, orbeing involved with some lies isok, especially the ones thatMAN think he has involvedChrist in, 1John1:1-6; instead ofteaching the TRUTH; that allliars will have their part inHELL. “Rev 21:8 But the fear-ful, and unbelieving, and theabominable, and murderers, andwhoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all (1)liars,shall have their part in the lakewhich burneth with fire andbrimstone: which is the seconddeath.” Definition: (1)allliars-5571 pseudes (psyoo-dace’); from 5574; untrue, i.e.erroneous, deceitful, wicked:KJV— false, liar. Children arebeing brought up in the nurtureand admonition of fables/lies,traditions, doctrines, and com-mandments of men, rather thanof The Lord (see Eph.6:1-4).Remember Christians are toexhort to godliness, (1Tim 4:6-16) please note verses 12&13).It is so sad that so many soulsobserve in any manner thesetraditions of men, instead offollowing the WORD, which isgiven to us by God throughChrist, and his apostles. After allthe Word is our MAP to HEAV-EN and away from HELL!

Here is another ERRONIOUSstatement, “JESUS IS THEREASON FOR THE SEASON”;this is a cunningly devised fable,in other words, “believableerror”. Jesus has never been andnever will be the reason for anyseason, because JESUS IS NOTSEASONAL. Jesus Christ is aLIFESTYLE that one MUSTstrive as a Christian to live 24-7. Jesus has left instructions onwhat Christians MUST remem-ber about him, and it is not hisbirth, but his death (1Cor.11:23-34). He lived a life of suffering(Isaiah 53:1-12; Matt.21:1-7;Luke 9:57-62; John1:9-11;John12:25-26), then died mostcruelly on the cross for us all.Remember, His Father for oursake was pleased to BRUISEHis only begotten Son,Isa.53:10. Then, after His death, and the shedding of blood forthe remission of sin: raised Himup on the third day, thereby giv-ing us a chance for salvation, IF

we OBEY and follow HIM,through his apostles, (John 17:8-23; John 19:34; Acts 22:16;1Cor.1:30; 6:11; Eph.5:26-27;Heb.5:5-9; Heb.9:13-28;James1:21-22; 1Pet.3:21-22;1Pet.4:1-3; 1John1:6-10).

“KEEP CHRIST IN CHRIST-MAS”, this is another cunninglydevised fable, in that the wordChristmas cannot be found inthe inspired WORD, (theBible). So then God, the ONEand ONLY HOLY FATHER,which IS IN HEAVEN, did notput his precious Son in it. Christbeing the WORD (John1:1-14),never practiced it himself, andGOD made it clear in Matt.the17th chapter, thatChristians MUST hear hisbeloved son, in whom He is wellpleased and him ONLY (verse8). In Matt. 28:18-20 whenJesus Christ was about to ascendback into heaven, he made itclear to his apostles, that allpower in heaven and earth hadbeen given unto him, from hisFather which is in heaven. Christthen began to leave theminstructions on what they MUSTdo and teach true Christians toobserve. In these instructions“Christmas”, and the practice ofit, cannot be found. Now, webelieve this should open thedoor for some legitimate ques-tions, for those who want toknow the TRUTH, and escapeerror. For we all MUST strive toescape error, in order to haveeternal LIFE. Who made“JESUS THE REASON FORTHE SEASON”? Who put“CHRIST IN CHRISTMAS”? Ithas been proven by theApostles’ Doctrine that God thefather did not; neither did JesusChrist and his Apostles. Whoelse did Christ leave this author-ity; NO ONE ELSE. Accordingto scriptures Jesus left hisApostles the Word (John17:5-10), so that when we read(Eph.3:1-7), study (2Tim.2:15)and strive to obey (2Thes.1:7-9;James 1:21-25; 2:17-26;1Pet.4:12-19) the commands ofthe apostles (Acts1:1-4;Acts2:41-42; 2Pet.3:1-2; 1John4:5-6; Jude 1:16-19), this andonly this makes us all ONE,right (righteous) with God. Nowlet us examine the origin of thistradition.

Christmas: Date (Dec. 25), wasestablished in (A.D. 336), by theWestern Church, based at Rome. The Eastern Orthodox and theEastern Rite churches within theRoman Catholic Church chose(January 6). There seems tohave been some confusion onthe date of which this day was tobe observed. God is not theauthor of confusion(see1Cor.14:33), this only hap-

pens with man’s traditions. This is why Christians MUSTobserve all things that Christ hascommanded the Apostles, (seeMatt.28:20). Again you will notfind the word “Christmas”, orthe traditional practice of it, byChrist nor his Apostles. So, thereis no such custom in the Churchof God (see 1Cor.11:16), whichhe purchased with his blood(see Acts20:28), which is theChurch of and by Christ (seeMatt. 16:16-18; Eph.3:21;5:23-33; Col.1:18). As we cantell by the dates given, this tradi-tion came MUCH TOO late tobe of Christ or his apostles.According to Christ Himself,Christians MUST believe onHim through his Apostle’s word,(John17:20-21) and continueSTEADFAST, in the apostle’sdoctrine, as those before us(Acts2:41-42), this is SAFE.

The TREE is one of the mainthings GLORIFIED in this tradi-tion, which man has WITHOUTAUTHORITY; thereby withoutsuccess, tried to make Jesus thereason for. After all, this iswhere the so called “GIFTS” arelaid, and so much time is spentin the DECORATING of it. Thechildren of Israel were warnedof a similar custom; “Jeremiah10:1 Hear ye the word which theLORD speaketh unto you, Ohouse of Israel: 2 Thus saith theLORD, Learn not the way ofthe heathen, and be not dis-mayed at the signs of heaven;for the heathen are dismayed atthem. 3 For the customs of thepeople are vain: for one cuttetha tree out of the forest, the workof the hands of the workman, with the axe. 4 They deck it withsilver and with gold; they fastenit with nails and with hammersthat it move not.” Now man hasintroduced the tradition of the“Christmas Tree”, that manyProfessing to be Christians, “fol-lowers of Christ”, observe. Howcan this be, when this traditioncannot be found in the apostles’doctrine or in the inspiredWORD of the bible, at all?

Man himself proves the fact thatJesus is not the reason for theseason, and that he is not in it.For when the, so-called,Christmas season starts, what istruly thought of the most? Is itChrist or is it the time off, thevain carnal trees and decora-tions, the materialistic gifts, the glutinous foods and drinks, the carnal games and the flesh-ly family gatherings? Where isChrist? Let your conversation beONLY about Christ, the scrip-tures, and soul salvation while atthese gatherings and see howpopular you will be, (Philp.1:27;1Tim.4:11 -16; 1Pet.1:13-19;2Pet.3:8-12). Take the carnal,

fleshly wants of man out of theequation; there would be noobservance of these carnal daysthat Christ has not authorizedto those that are his. The proof isin the pudding; our GOD is trulyour BELLIES Phil 3:16-20,because it seems nothing can bedone without carnal food. Today, even buildings that shouldOLY be built for worship, which include the serving ofSPIRITUAL food, for the spiri-tual edification of the body ofChrist, must have KITCHENS.

Here Jesus made it clear what istruly needful; Luke 10:38Now it came to pass, as theywent, that he entered into a cer-tain village: and a certainwoman named Martha receivedhim into her house. 39 And shehad a sister called Mary, whichalso sat at Jesus’ feet, and heardhis word. 40 But Martha wascumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sisterhath left me to serve alone? bidher therefore that she help me.41 And Jesus answered and saidunto her, Martha, Martha, thouart careful and troubled aboutmany things: 42 But one thingis needful: and Mary hath cho-sen that good part, which shallnot be taken away from her. Please read what Jesus told themultitude; “John 6:26 Jesusanswered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seekme, not because ye saw the mir-acles, but because ye did eat ofthe loaves, and were filled. 27Labour not for the meat whichperisheth, but for that meatwhich endureth unto everlastinglife, which the Son of man shallgive unto you: for him hath Godthe Father sealed.” Now here isan example given by JesusChrist, for those that were to beinvited to a feast. Now this isnot the so called GIFT giving aspre-mentioned, but TRUE GIFTgiving, and Christians MUST beof the TRUTH, John17:16-17.Note the definition of GIFT(g¹ft) n. 1. Something that isbestowed voluntarily and with-out (1)compensation; “Luke14:12 Then said he also to himthat bade him, When thou mak-est a dinner or a supper, call notthy friends, nor thy brethren, neither thy kinsmen, nor thy richneighbours; lest they also bidthee again, and a recompencebe made thee. 13 But when thoumakest a feast, call the poor, themaimed, the lame, the blind: 14And thou shalt be blessed; forthey cannot (2)recompense thee:for thou shalt be recompensedat the resurrection of the just.”

It is of SPECIAL CONCERN,when those professing to be ofthe one body, the church of andby Christ (Matt.16:13-20;Eph.3:21), observe such tradi-tions and doctrines in any man-ner. There are many souls involvedin many things that are not ofthe Body that Christ is theHEAD of (Col.1:18). TheChurch that Christ is the headof, MUST be subject untoChrist in everything; “Eph5:23 For the husband is the headof the wife, even as Christ is thehead of the church: and he is thesaviour of the body. 24Therefore as the church is(1)subject unto Christ, so let thewives be to their own husbandsin every thing.” Definition:(1)Subject unto Christ -5293hupotasso; to subordinate;reflexively, to obey: KJV— beunder obedience (obedient), putunder, subdue unto, (be, make)subject (to, unto), be (put) insubjection), submit self unto.

WOE unto any man that tries toput Christ into anything, ormake him the reason for any-thing! Man is the CREATURE,Christ is the CREATOR; pleaseread John1:1-5; Col. 1:12-20.Christians MUST heed the warn-ing of the apostle Peter, whomsome erroneously calls the first“Pope”. This is error simplybecause, the word, Pope, can notbe found anywhere in theinspired scriptures of the HolyBible. However, GOD the OnlyHoly Father, Jesus the OnlyChrist (Matt.23:5-12), and hisApostles are found in the bible.Christians MUST remember thatPeter, one of the apostles andone of the elders, warns theChurch that Christ is the HEADof, to beware of cunninglydevised fables; but first notewhat the apostle Paul says, thenthe apostle Peter, as they wereguided by The Holy Ghost; “Gal2:6. But, of these who seemedto be somewhat, (whatsoeverthey were, it maketh no matterto me: God accepteth no man’sperson:) for they who seemed tobe somewhat in conferenceadded nothing to me: 7 Butcontrariwise, when they saw thatthe gospel of the uncircumcisionwas committed unto me, as thegospel of the circumcision wasunto Peter; 8 (For he thatwrought effectually in Peter tothe apostleship of the circumci-sion, the same was mighty inme toward the Gentiles:)”(KJV)

“PEACE O EARTH”Luke 2:11 For unto you is bornthis day in the city of David aSaviour, which is Christ theLord. 12 And this shall be asign unto you; Ye shall find thebabe wrapped in swaddlingclothes, lying in a (1)manger.13 And suddenly there was withthe angel a multitude of theheavenly host praising God, andsaying, 14 Glory to God in thehighest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.(KJV)Definition:(1)manger 5336phatne (fat’-nay); from pateomai(to eat); a crib (for fodder),man·ger (m³n“j…r) n. A troughor an open box in which feed forlivestock is placed.: KJV—manager, stall.

This is what the Angels declaredat the LOWLY birth of JesusChrist in the flesh. For we mustremember, Jesus was in thebeginning (John1:1-14), but hebecame a little lower thanangels, as God sent his Son inthe likeness of sinful flesh(Rom.8:1-9; Gal.4:4-5;Heb.2:7-10). This declarationthat was made by the angels isheard often this time of the year.Peace on earth can ONLY existif ALL men DENY themselves, and suffer to obey Christthrough his apostles’ word, doc-trine, traditions and commands;as God has commanded (Matt.17:1-8; 28:18-20; John17:15-24; Acts2:41-42; 2Thes.2:14-17; 2Pet.3:1-2; 1John 4:5-6).Christ’s will have always beengood toward men, but man mustfirst have a change of MIND

(repentance). “2 Pet 3:9 TheLord is not slack concerninghis promise, as some men countslackness; but is longsuffering tous-ward, not willing that anyshould perish, but that allshould come to repentance. 10But the day of the Lord willcome as a thief in the night; inthe which the heavens shall passaway with a great noise, and theelements shall melt with ferventheat, the earth also and theworks that are therein shall beburned up.11 Seeing then thatall these things shall be dis-solved, what manner of personsought ye to be in all holy con-versation and godliness,” Butman wants to have it his ownway. He wants to be able tochoose his own way to be right-eous with God, thereby causingdivision, variance and confusion.According to Christ and Hisapostles; because of man’sSCRIPTURAL ignorance(Matt.22:29), REBELLIOUSways (Luke 6:46-49); andbecause man loves his life, theWORLD and the THINGS thatare IN it (John12:25-26; 1John2:15-17), there is and there willbe no peace on earth(Matt.10:32-38; Luke 12:51-53).

Jesus said he didn’t come tosend peace, but a sword, whichis the WORD. If we areChristians we MUST believewhat Christ says. Do we notwant to know the truth? “Matt10:32 Whosoever therefore shallconfess me before men, him willI confess also before my Fatherwhich is in heaven. 33 Butwhosoever shall deny me beforemen, him will I also deny beforemy Father which is in heaven.34 Think not that I am come tosend peace on earth: I came notto send peace, *but a sword.35 For I am come to set a manat variance against his father, and the daughter against hermother, and the daughter in lawagainst her mother in law. 36And a man’s foes shall be theyof his own household. 37 Hethat loveth father or mothermore than me is not worthy ofme: and he that loveth son ordaughter more than me is notworthy of me. 38 And he thattaketh not his cross, and fol-loweth after me, is not worthyof me” (see also Luke9:57-62).“Heb 4: 11 Let us labour there-fore to enter into that rest, lestany man fall after the sameexample of unbelief. 12 For theword of God is quick, and pow-erful, and sharper than any*two-edged sword, piercingeven to the dividing asunder ofsoul and spirit, and of the jointsand marrow, and is a discernerof the thoughts and intents of theheart” (see also Eph.6:17).

“Luke 12:51 Suppose ye that Iam come to give peace onearth? I tell you, ay; butrather division: 52 For fromhenceforth there shall be five inone house divided, three againsttwo, and two against three. 53The father shall be dividedagainst the son, and the sonagainst the father; the motheragainst the daughter, and thedaughter against the mother; themother in law against her daugh-ter in law, and the daughter inlaw against her mother in law.”

Because of the insistence ofmany on following cunninglydevised fables, rather than themore sure WORD of prophecyby the apostles, there is confu-sion. Since many are resolved tofollow blindly, teachers that arefalse, without proving them bythe apostles’ doctrine, there isvariance. Because many havechosen to follow the traditionsand commandments of men, rather than those of the apostles, which would make PEACE andmake us ALL ONE in Christ, there is, and there MUST beDIVISION; Please Read: “II Th3:4 And we have confidence inthe Lord touching you, that yeboth do and will do the thingswhich we command you. 5 Andthe Lord direct your hearts intothe love of God, and into thepatient waiting for Christ. 6Now we command you, brethren, in the name of ourLord Jesus Christ, that ye(1)withdraw yourselves fromevery brother that (2)walketh(3)disorderly, and not after thetradition which he received ofus.”

2 Pet 1:17 For he received fromGod the Father honour andglory, when there came such avoice to him from the excellentglory, This is my beloved Son,in whom I am well pleased. 18And this voice which came fromheaven we heard, when we werewith him in the holy mount. 19We have also a more sure wordof prophecy; whereunto ye dowell that ye take heed, as untoa light that shineth in a darkplace, until the day dawn, andthe day star arise in your hearts:20 Knowing this first, that noprophecy of the scripture is ofany private interpretation. 21For the prophecy came not inold time by the will of man: butholy men of God spake as theywere moved by the HolyGhost.(KJV)

2 Pet 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you;in both which I stir up your pureminds by way of remembrance:2 That ye may be mindful of thewords which were spoken beforeby the holy prophets, and of thecommandment of us the apos-tles of the Lord andSaviour:(KJV)

I Jn 4:5 They are of the world:therefore speak they of theworld, and the world heareththem. 6 We are of God: he thatknoweth God heareth us; hethat is not of God heareth notus. Hereby know we the spirit oftruth, and the spirit oferror.(KJV)

Note the apostle Paul as headmonished the Church inCorinth, Philippi andThessalonica, as he and they, theapostles were guided by TheHoly Ghost: “1 Cor 11:1 Be yefollowers of me, even as I alsoam of Christ. 2 Now I praiseyou, brethren, that ye rememberme in all things, and keep theordinances, as I delivered themto you. 3 But I would have youknow, that the head of everyman is Christ; and the head ofthe woman is the man; and thehead of Christ is God.” “Phil4:9 Those things, which yehave both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do:and the God of peace shall bewith you.” “II Th 3:4 And wehave confidence in the Lordtouching you, that ye both doand will do the things which wecommand you. 5 And the Lorddirect your hearts into the loveof God, and into the patientwaiting for Christ.”(KJV)

Our hope is, that all striving tobe Christians, according to theapostles’ doctrine (Acts1:1-4;Acts2:41-42), will become in thefuture, SPIRITUALLY MIND-ED and not the SECULARLYMINDED ones that WE ARE.Please read; “ Rom 6:1 Whatshall we say then? Shall we con-tinue in sin, that grace mayabound? 2 God forbid. Howshall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein? 3 Knowye not, that so many of us aswere baptized into Jesus Christwere baptized into his death? 4Therefore we are buried withhim by baptism into death: thatlike as Christ was raised up fromthe dead by the glory of theFather, even so we also shouldwalk in newness of life. 5 Forif we have been planted togetherin the likeness of his death, weshall be also in the likeness ofhis resurrection: 6 Knowingthis, that our old man is cruci-fied with him, that the body ofsin might be destroyed, thathenceforth we should not servesin.” “Rom 8:5 For they thatare after the flesh do mind thethings of the flesh; but they thatare after the Spirit the things ofthe Spirit. 6 For to be carnallyminded is death; but to be spiri-tually minded is life and peace.7 Because the carnal mind isenmity against God: for it isnot subject to the law of God,neither indeed can be. 8 So thenthey that are in the flesh cannotplease God. 9 But ye are not inthe flesh, but in the Spirit, if sobe that the Spirit of God dwellin you. ow if any man havenot the Spirit of Christ, he isnone of his.” “2 Cor 5:16Wherefore henceforth know weno man after the flesh: yea, though we have known Christafter the flesh, yet now hence-forth know we him no more. 17Therefore if any man be inChrist, he is a new creature:old things are passed away;behold, all things are becomenew.” “Eph 4:10 He thatdescended is the same also thatascended up far above all heav-ens, that he might fill all things.)11 And he gave some, apostles;and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastorsand teachers; 12 For the per-fecting of the saints, for thework of the ministry, for theedifying of the body of Christ:13 Till we all come in the unityof the faith, and of the knowl-edge of the Son of God, unto aperfect man, unto the measure ofthe stature of the fulness ofChrist: 14 That we henceforthbe no more children, tossed toand fro, and carried about withevery wind of doctrine, by thesleight of men, and cunningcraftiness, whereby they lie inwait to deceive; 15 But speak-

ing the truth in love, may growup into him in all things, whichis the head, even Christ: 16From whom the whole bodyfitly joined together and com-pacted by that which every jointsupplieth, according to the effec-tual working in the measure ofevery part, maketh increase ofthe body unto the edifying ofitself in love. 17 This I saytherefore, and testify in theLord, that ye henceforth walknot as other Gentiles walk, inthe vanity of their mind, 18Having the understanding dark-ened, being alienated from thelife of God through the igno-rance that is in them, because ofthe blindness of their heart: 19Who being past feeling havegiven themselves over unto las-civiousness, to work all unclean-ness with greediness. 20 But yehave not so learned Christ; 21If so be that ye have heard him,and have been taught by him, asthe truth is in Jesus: 22 Thatye put off concerning the formerconversation the old man, which is corrupt according to thedeceitful (1)lusts; 23 And berenewed in the spirit of yourmind; 24 And that ye put onthe new man, which after Godis created in righteousness andtrue holiness.” “Col 3:1 If yethen be risen with Christ, seekthose things which are above, where Christ sitteth on theright hand of God. 2 (2)Setyour affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3For ye are dead, and your life ishid with Christ in God. 4 WhenChrist, who is our life, shallappear, then shall ye also appearwith him in glory. 5 (3)Mortifytherefore your members whichare upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affec-tion, evil concupiscence, andcovetousness, which is idolatry:6 For which things’ sake thewrath of God cometh on thechildren of disobedience: 7 Inthe which ye also walked sometime, when ye lived in them. 8But now ye also put off allthese; anger, wrath, malice, blas-phemy, filthy communicationout of your mouth. 9 Lie not oneto another, seeing that ye haveput off the old man with hisdeeds; 10 And have put on thenew man, which is renewed inknowledge after the image ofhim that created him: 11 Wherethere is neither Greek nor Jew,circumcision nor uncircumci-sion, Barbarian, Scythian, bondnor free: but Christ is all, and inall.” (KJV)

When one professes to belong toChrist (Christian), and choosesNOT to be doers of the Wordand work, James 1:21-25; butchooses to be spotted with theworld James1:27; and choosesto love the world and the thingsthat are in it, this makes one notof the Father 1John2:15-17.According to scripture, this alsomakes one an adulterer or anadulteress, choosing to be afriend of this world, James4:4-10. Again, according to scrip-ture, one that chooses to lovetheir life in this world, shall losetheir life (eternally) John12:23-26. Remember, because of ourown BELLIES, choosing tothink about, let alone doing thethings and the traditions that welike here on earth (mind earthlythings); this then, according toscripture makes us the enemiesof the Cross of Christ(Phil.3:16-20)! These thingsbeing so, thereby being thechoice of one that professesCHRIST, according to SCRIP-TURE, makes one a DENIER ofChrist and the Father (makingone an ATICHRIST) ratherthan a DENIER of oneself(Luke 9:22-26, 1John2:22-23)!

James 1:26 If any man amongyou seem to be religious, andbridleth not his tongue, butdeceiveth his own heart, thisman’s religion is vain. 27 Purereligion and undefiled beforeGod and the Father is this, Tovisit the fatherless and widowsin their affliction, and to keephimself (1)unspotted from theworld. I Jn 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in theworld. If any man love theworld, the love of the Father isnot in him. 16 For all that is inthe world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and thepride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. 17 And theworld passeth away, and the lustthereof: but he that doeth thewill of God abideth for ever. 18Little children, it is the last time:and as ye have heard thatantichrist shall come, even noware there many antichrists;whereby we know that it is thelast time. 19 They went outfrom us, but they were not ofus; for if they had been of us,they would no doubt have con-tinued with us: but they wentout, that they might be mademanifest that they were not allof us. 20 But ye have an unctionfrom the Holy One, and ye knowall things. 21 I have not writtenunto you because ye know notthe truth, but because ye knowit, and that no lie is of the truth.22 Who is a (1)liar but he thatdenieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is (2)antichrist, that (3)deni-eth the Father and the Son. 23Whosoever denieth the Son, thesame hath not the Father: (but)he that (4)acknowledgeth theSon hath the Father also. 24 Letthat therefore abide in you, which ye have heard from thebeginning. If that which ye haveheard from the beginning shallremain in you, ye also shall con-tinue in the Son, and in theFather. 25 And this is the prom-ise that he hath promised us,even eternal life. 26 Thesethings have I written unto youconcerning them that seduceyou.(KJV)

Please note here, the apostlePaul’s admonishment to theChurch in Corinth, as he wasguided by the Holy Ghost and ashe admonishes ALL that read(Eph.3:1-5); to examine our-selves whether we be in thefaith, OT A FAITH: 2 Cor13:5 Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith;prove your own selves. Dear reader again, the purposeof these articles is to seek theTRUTH according to THEWORD, thereby exposingERROR, for the purpose of sav-ing our souls. We believe this isbest done by definitions and thepreponderance of scriptures;which is having superior weight, force, importance, or influenceof scripture. Again we believethis allows SCRIPTURE toINTERPRET SCRIPTURE,thereby allowing a better under-standing on that topic. Again, thank you so much for yourinterest in the WORD ofTRUTH; GRACE and Salvation;John 17:17-21; Acts 20:29-32;James1:21-25. After all it is ourMap to HEAVEN!

PRECIOUS is Time. Therefore while you have

time, use it to learn and do Gods Commandments

for at the end of life is pay time and your pay will

be according as your work has been. You will find

in 2 Corinthians 5:10 the following: “For we must

all appear before the judgement seat of Christ,

that everyone may recive the things done in his

body according to that he hath done, whether it

be good or evil.” You will find in John 15:14. “Ye

are my friends if ye do whatsoever I command

you.” Solomon said in Proverbs 1:5 “A wise man

will hear and will increase learning, and a man of

understanding will attain unto wise counsel.”

How shall we escape if we neglect to great

Salvation: Hebrew 2:1-3 Salvation is to be worked

out. It will not work itself out; God will not work

it out for us. o one can work it out for us. It is

the duty of man to work out his own salvation.

KENNON BLACKSHIRE JV

COBRAS

LaMarque, Texas-The Junior

Varsity team of the Studewood

Cobras had 14 kids return from

last year’s squad and they won

the Super Bowl. It was the 6th

title for Coach Kennon

Blackshire and his staff of James

Wyatt Sr. James Wyatt Jr.

Bahker Sowell and Ronald

Hughes. The team mom is

Kenya Young. “We always put

our first year players on defense

and my veterans on offense help

our team to grow”. Blackshire

went on to say he had guys on

both sides of the ball that knew

the game well and played well

all season long. Two of the top

players on the squad are Jordan

Guidry and Kharee McDaniel

and according to Coach

Blackshire it helped a great deal.

“King, they listen to our coaches

and they know the game very

well; we’ve had them since they

played flag football with the

Cobras”.

Over time the Studewood

Cobras have been established for

35 years and some teams have

trouble dealing with their suc-

cess. “Yes King it has always

been that way for 31 years that

I’ve been with the organization.

We play the game by the rules”.

Blackshire went on to say they

made sure all players get their

mandatory amount plays and if a

kid shines they will allow him to

get more plays so he can shine.

In talking with Blackshire he is

truly pleased to have Fiesta Mart

Inc., as a cooperate sponsor.

“With Fiesta’s help the Cobras

organization has teamed with the

community and we are moving

forward and I’m happy to be

involved with the Cobras.

He went on to say he truly

enjoys working with the Cobras

and the high school and college

coaches should be watching

what we are doing. One of the

top defensive backs in the nation

is Craig Loson of LSU who

played at Eisenhower but started

out with the Cobras. “Hey King,

that’s our boy and we use to call

him Snub and he’s playing for a

national title now”.

With his 6th Super Bowl cham-

pionship under his belt, Kennon

made it clear he has worked

hard over the years and looks

forward to many more with the

Cobras. “Coach Walter Penrice

and I started around the same

time. I think he was out here a

year or two before me, but it has

been an honor to work with him

as big brother to me”.

MICHAEL KRAMER

BELLAIRE

Houston, Texas-Since 1981

Michael Kramer has been in the

Houston I.S.D. and is truly a

heaven sent presence for the dis-

trict. Since 1995 he has been

the girls head basketball coach

and his Lady Cardinals are now

an established program in the

Metro-Houston area. “Yes King

all roads to Austin leads through

Bellaire and you know we are

sort of ‘old school’ here with a

strong emphasis on academics

but we play hard as well”. The

longtime coach went on to say

with a smile if we can ever get a

big girl in here we are really

going to have some fun. “We

tell our girls they are going to

have to fight and fight against

the bigger girls we are facing”.

We talked more about the tour-

nament’s 28th year coach

Kramer who felt his team was

fighting well with three girls out

for three weeks. “We are little

light and Tiesha Taylor is about

6 feet 3 or 4 and we had a hard

time dealing with her down

low”. Quickly becoming one of

the top programs in the city,

Bellaire has four seniors, four

juniors, three sophomores and a

freshman so the future looks

great for the Lady Cardinals.

“Thanks King, I agree with you

we are getting pretty established

and we want to just keep rolling;

it’s still a lot of fun”.

Having worked a long time cov-

ering Houston area sports it’s

rewarding to see Coach Kramer

have success and working with

his girls. “My kids see us work-

ing hard and its having a snow

ball effect and we try to be good

role models the way we do

things”.

It was an honor to visit with

Coach Kramer and seeing him

work his magic. The Lady

Cardinals are once again at the

top of the heap.

WILLIE AMENDOLA

SPRING-DEKANEY

Arlington, Texas-In only their

4th season on varsity, Spring-

Dekaney has a state champi-

onship title trophy. Moments

after his team beat Cibolo Steele

34-14 to end the Knights 28

game win streak Coach Willie

Amendola talked with the press.

“Offensively we got it together

in the second half and our

defense went to work after the

turnover”. Coach went on to say

the kicking game picked up in

the second half as well for the

34-14 state champs. The soft

spoken coach went on to praise

his defensive coordinator

Darrick Vaughn in getting the

team ready for Cibolo Steele.

The rest of his staff is Brandon

Arabie, Michael Byrd, Michael

Clark, Greg Guidry, Kennard

Johnson, Jermacus Joshua,

Adam Mealey, Braxton

O’Branion, Jeff Sciba, Antonio

Singleton, Dexter Smith, Charles

West, Anthony Williams and

Rodney Young.

Austin Garrett hauled in a 40

yard scoring pass from D’Juan

Hines which tied the game with

2:11 to go in the first period.

“Yes it kind of got us going a lit-

tle bit because we fell behind at

the end of the first period and

they kind of had the momentum

on their side”. Coach added once

the fellows got a few licks and

put their feet on the ground they

were ready to play some foot-

ball.

We then asked coach Amendola

to talk about the interception by

Jarrett Irving that broke the

backs of the Knights. “Yes it did

and we kind of got going from

then on”.

JORDEN GIDREY

JV COBRAS

La Marque, Texas-The talented

Jorden Gidrey did his thing as

the Junior Varsity Cobras rolled

past the Bulldogs 18-16 to win

the 2011 Super Bowl title.

Showing a great deal of poise,

Gidrey huddled the defense up

and they came up with a plan to

step the vaulted ground game of

the Bulldogs. Gidrey, a hard

nosed middle linebacker, took

charge by knocking the Bulldogs

big back off his feet with a

rolling block. That went well

with the play of defensive tackle

Smiley LeBlanc, who took con-

trol of the line of scrimmage.

It is always a pleasure talking

with Jorden because he gives

such straight forward answers.

“I’ve got to obey my coaching

and I don’t mind playing middle

linebacker”. Jorden went on to

say the Cobras had to make sure

they took the legs away from

those big guys and that stops

them from running the ball so

well”.

As we talked more with the

leader of the team we learned

they had a real good talk at half-

time trialing 12-6. “Everyone

knew we had to build up their

momentum and get ready to play

hard for the rest of the game”.

Going back to when he first

came out for the Cobras, Gidrey

said he really didn’t know that

he would be winning Super

Bowl titles. “Yes sir I’m honored

to be a member of the

Studewood Cobras”. With a

serious smile on his face, Jorden

says he is going to continue to

work hard and maybe someday

he will be like the Studewood

Cobra who is one of nation’s top

defensive back that being Craig

(Snub) Loston of the LSU

Tigers.

A.J. ALIX-BELLAIRE LADY

CARDINALS

Houston, Texas-Junior sensation

all-around guard A. J. Alix

scored 24 points to help the

Lady Cardinals win the 28th

Annual Houston I.S.D. Girls

Tournament. The win came over

a solid Temple High School

team. We spoke with Alix about

her play and the team this year.

“Last year we lost to Westside in

the finals of this tournament and

this year we wanted to come

back and win it “. The team

came back and won the district

title despite the fact they don’t

have a lot of height, but they

still manage to win ballgames.

Big Tiesha Taylor at 6 feet 4

pretty much had her way inside

against the smaller Cardinals,

but in the end Bellaire won it

58-51. “We just had to keep try-

ing to box her out and that way

when she went on our backs we

got her in foul trouble”. Alix

went on to say they felt pretty

good about the way they were

able to keep up with the big girl.

“The key was to keep beating

them up court and even though

we had three of our best players

out with injuries our younger

players really stepped up in this

tournament”.

As the Lady Cardinals continues

to establish themselves as one of

the top girls programs in the

state, Alix is right in the thick of

it. “Too many people talk about

A. J. this and A. J. that but the

truth is we have a well-rounded

team and it’s not just about A. J.,

Look Raven (Burns) came out of

nowhere and is averaging 28

points per game”. The talented

junior went on to say she feels

the Lady Cardinals should have

gone to state in both her fresh-

man and sophomore seasons and

they want to make it this time

around. “The past two years we

just didn’t play as well as we

should have down the stretch,

but this year we plan to”.

In closing Alix says her mother

keeps her on the straight and

narrow path and makes sure she

spends her spare time very well.

KENNY HILL-SOUTHLAKE

CARROLL

Arlington, Texas-Using his

height to survey the field, junior

signal caller Kenny Hill led

Southlake Carroll to the Class

5A Division I state title. It came

at the expense of Fort Bend

Hightower 36-29 before a crowd

of 42,822 at the magnificent

Cowboys Stadium. The talented

junior connected on 19 of 24

passes for 229 yards and two

touchdowns and was not sacked

all day long. Hill also rushed

for 24 times gaining 116 more

yards and scoring twice on the

ground.

Hill’s main target of the game

was receiver Sabian Holmes

who had 11 grabs for 138 yards

including a big 59 yard scoring

play in the third period. Holmes

also had a great game on

defense as well as he went both

way all game long.

Arlington, Texas-After a shaky

start, the Spring Dekaney

Wildcats clawed their way to a

big 34-14 win over Cibolo

Steele Knights. Before a crowd

of just over 15 thousand fans,

the Wildcats spotted the Knights

seven points and exploded for

20 points in the second period to

go to victory. Tommy

Armstrong took advantage of a

turnover and found Matthew

Mayle from 19 yards out for the

early lead. But the Wildcats

responded early in the second

period when D’Juan Hines hit

Austin Garrett on a three play 50

yard scoring drive. On their sec-

ond possession the Wildcats

went ahead when Trey Williams

crashed in from one yard out.

Steele was driving and then

Armstrong threw his first inter-

ception of the season when

Jarrett Irving picked the ball and

returned it 61 yards to the

Knights 12 yard line. Two plays

later Trey Williams exploded

around left end for the score

from six yards out and a big 20-

7 half time lead. Neither team

could score in the third. But

D’Juan Hines found Sam Horn

from two yards out and a com-

manding 27-7 lead. However

Armstrong got on target and hit

Matt Mayle again from 22 yard

out to close to with 27-14. Then

it was all over when Williams

who had a 53 yard punt return

ran 24 yards and put an end to

any doubts one could have about

this team.

Williams finished with 25 car-

ries and 197 yards and three

touchdowns including a big 7.9

yard per carry average. He also

had help from D’Juan Hines

who rushed for six times for 34

yards and passed two for five for

42 yards and two touchdowns.

Sam Horn had seven carries for

34 yards and Gerald Estien

added 21 yards on four carries

for the Wildcats.

CARROLL EDGES FORT

BEND HIGHTOWER FOR

CLASS 5A

Division I title 36-29 before a

crowd of 42, 896 at the wonder-

ful Cowboy Stadium. Junior

quarterback Kenny Hill called a

near perfect game for the

Dragons as they won their 8th

state championship. But they

had to do so with one the state’s

top performers in Bralon

Addison of the Fort Bend

Hightower Hurricanes. Addison

ran 21 times for 184 yards and

two touchdowns in the loss. The

Texas A&M commitment also

averaged 8.8 yards per carry and

passed for 63 more yards and

another touchdown on five of

eight in the air. Clearly he did

his part but the Hightower

defense could not stop the well

balanced Dragons on offense.

We mention Hill who rushed 24

times for 116 yards along with

two touchdowns and through the

air he went 19 of 24 for 229

yards and two more touchdowns.

It’s no wonder he was voted the

Offensive MVP in the game.

Despite allowing Addison to get

some big runs, the defense for

the Dragons was led by line-

backer Will Davis who was all

over the ‘Canes in the second

half. He had help from Sabian

Homes who played well at wide

receiver making 11 receptions

for 138 yards and a score and

defensive back where he also

made some big plays.

Drew Brown opened the scoring

with a 25 yard field goal but

Hightower answered with a four

yard touchdown run by Jaquinn

Henderson. Carroll scored again

when Matt Swoyer had a 97

yard conversion return of the

failed P A T. The first period

ended with S.L.C. leading 8-6.

Things began to look up for Fort

Bend as Addison got behind the

defense with a 15 yard run and

Luis Gallegos Perez booted a 34

yard field goal as Hightower

was up 16-14 at the half. With a

little time gone in the third peri-

od Addison found Ryan Nelson

from 30 yards out and the

‘Canes added to their lead.

However less than three minute

later Kenny Hill hit Sabian

Holmes from 59 yards out and

closed the gap at 23-21. Still in

the third, Hill struck again this

time to hitting Corey Kemp

from 25 yard out and a 28-23

advantage. After the kickoff out

of the end zone, Addison went

80 yards for a score and the two

point pass play failed but they

still lead it 29-28 and the nearly

43 thousand fans were really on

the edges of this plush seats at

Cowboy Stadium. With a little

more than nine minutes left in

the game, Hill scored from six

yards out and then ran in a two

point conversion making the

score 36-29. It was then Sabian

Holmes and Will Davis took

over and kept the ‘Canes out the

end zone and won the game in a

thriller.

pionships for 2011 S.L.C. over

Division II game. On the Class

4A side it was Lake Travis over

Hewitt Midway 22-7 for

Division I while Aledo won over

Manvel 49-28 for their third

straight state title. In Class 3A it

was Wimberley over Argyle 21-

14 while in the Class 2A Melissa

Division I and Refugio won a

thriller over Cisco 36-35 for

Division II. Class A Division I

ALEDO WINS VS MANVEL

It was a full day of action at the

magnificent Cowboys Stadium

in Arlington, Texas as the

University Interscholastic

League hosted the final three

games of the state football

championships. The high noon

kickoff with 43,369 watching

the Mavericks of Manvel in only

their fourth season on varsity

faced the two-time defending

state champs Aledo. With

Manvel thinking of ways to stop

the exciting Johnathan Gray,

quarterback Matthew Bishop

found Willie Gibson from 44

yards out to open the scoring.

Then early in the second period

Todd Christian returned an inter-

ception 70 yards for a score and

a big 14-0 lead. The Mavericks

tried to bounce back when

Selwyn Green ran 13 yards for a

score to close the gap. But fol-

lowing a turnover, Bishop struck

again as he ran eight yards for

another score and a 21-7 lead.

Then just before the half Bishop

hit Parker Bradham from 10

yards out taking a commanding

28-7 lead at the break which

just turned out to be too much.

In the second half junior quarter-

back Shane McCarley got

rolling and found Corey

Seymour with a pair of scoring

passes from 14 and 29 yards to

close to within seven only to see

Bishop run five yards for a score

as the third period ended.

McCarley would add a one yard

run but Johnathan Gray who had

31 carries for 247 yards broke

their backs with a big 37 yard

run to put it out of reach.

Bishop who was voted the

Offensive MVP would hit Park

Bradham again from 10 yards

out and a big 49-28 victory. It

marked the third straight title for

the Bearcats and Gray goes into

the record books with a career

national record leading 205

touchdowns.

TREY WILLIAMS-DEKANEY

Arlington, Texas-After a slow

start trailing Cibolo Steele 7-0,

the Wildcats got rolling. Once

they did Texas A&M bound Trey

Williams exploded for three

touchdowns and 209 yards to

lead his team to their first state

football title in Spring I.S.D. his-

tory. In his spare time Williams

setup another score with a 51

yard punt return and had a 60

yard run in addition to all his

great efforts on the day. “I’m so

excited I can’t explain my feel-

ing now, but I love this team and

Austin Garrett made some big

plays when I was tired”.

Williams went on to tell us he’s

not the only one of this team

that can play. “We have a lot of

confident players on this squad

and I love my family, our coach-

es and all my teammates”. The

sensational setback said he

recalls people not believing in

them and some didn’t have faith

they could get it done. But in

only their fourth season compet-

ing on varsity, they go 14-2 and

win the class 5A Division II

State championship before a

smallish crowd of 15,092 fans at

Cowboys Stadium.

In closing Williams added he

thanks the Lord, his coaches,

family, friends and teammates

and said they could not have

won the state without pulling

together.

KHAREE MCDANIEL-

STUDEWOOD COBRAS JV

La Marque, Texas-Having one

of his better games of the year

5th grade straight A student

Kharee McDaniel raced a little

more than 25 yards for the game

winning score. His touchdowns

gave the Cobras an 18-12 over-

time win over the North Side

Bulldogs to win the Bayou City

Youth Sport League 2011 title.

McDaniel is noted for getting

the tough yards for his team all

year long. “I wanted to stop

them and we could win the

game”. This kid felt good about

their defense and he knew they

would hold the Bulldogs on the

last few minutes.

When asked how it felt to be a

champion, McDaniel made it

clear it felt great. “Even when

we trailed 12-6, we believed the

Cobras would come back and

win the game”. Crediting his

father with instilling confidence

in him at an early age was the

key to him and the rest of the

Cobras hanging on to win the

game.

Looking ahead McDaniel says

any high school that accepts him

he will be willing to play for. He

is one of the toughest players on

the JV squad of Coach Kennon

Blackshire. However he credit-

ed numbers 23 and 2 as a couple

of tough guys to go against on

the Bulldogs squad. He added

when the Cobras show up in

their Fiesta sponsored trailer

some of the teams don’t like

them but it doesn’t matter. “We

don’t care how far we have to go

to win the Super Bowl because

we want to win at any cost”.

The young star went on to say

the Cobras have spectacular

players who get the job done. In

closing Kharee said everything

is possible in the Lord’s world

and his father told him that

when he was a baby and never

to forgot it.

RAVEN BURNS-BELLAIRE

LADY CARDINALS

Houston, Texas-Faced with two

of their best players sitting out

with injuries senior guard Raven

Burns took care of business. She

led the Lady Cardinals of

Bellaire to the 28th Annual

Houston I.S.D. Girls

Tournament championship over

Temple 58-51. The lovely and

talented senior had 27 points to

lead all scorers in the game.

The win avenges last year loss

to Westside in the finals of this

historic tournament. Raven

teamed with junior sensation A.

J. Alix who ripped the nets for

24 points to help offset the good

effort by Tiesha Taylor who was

posting the Lady Cardinals up.

“We knew we just basically had

an all guard lineup without Lulu

McKinney and Bianca Winslow

who set out with injuries”. Burns

added she and Alix had to get it

in going early and get some

points from the outside. “We

noticed Taylor had some fouls

on her and my coaches told me

to take her on and we were able

to get inside a couple of times

on her also”. As we talked with

Burns, we learned she is well

aware of the Lady Cardinals not

having any post players so to

win against a team like Temple

that had a big girl was special

for them.

The team loves to pressure on

defense because they like to trap

in the backcourt but Taylor got a

couple of big layups and we had

to call it off a little.

In her spare time Raven says she

works hard and gets plenty of

rest when she is not playing.

English is her favorite subject in

the classroom at Bellaire High

School.

JARRETT IRVING-DELANEY

Arlington, Texas-Senior defen-

sive back and kick runner Jarrett

Irving picked off two passes and

returned them 72 yards in the

title game for the Wildcats. It

was good enough to lead the

Spring-Dekaney Wildcats to the

State Class 5A Division II title

over defending state champ

Cibolo Steele Knights 34-14.

Jarrett, who has already pledged

to attend the University of

Houston in 2012, is solid at his

position and has a good nose for

the football.

Clearly the interception and 61

yard return to Cibolo 12 yard

line setting up Trey Williams

sweeping left end score was the

key to the win. It gave the

Wildcats a 20-7 lead and basi-

cally broke the backs of the

Knight who had won 28 straight

games. “Coach Willie

Amendola said it certainly

played a role in the win. “We

kind of got it going after the

interception and went on from

there”. The talented senior

defensive back had another pick

with one minute and ten seconds

left to seal the win. “Our coach-

es told us they wanted two picks

from me and I got them and it

was lovely”. For his works he

walked away with the Defensive

MVP of the Class 5A Division II

title game. The Houston

Cougars can certainly use his

play.

WILL DAVIS- SOUTHLAKE

CARROLL

Arlington, Texas-Linebacker

Will Davis was all over the field

making eight total tackles and

recording a share of a sack but

more importantly required two

blocks all day long. Thanks to

his efforts, the Dragons won

over Fort Bend Hightower in

one of the most exciting high

school football championship

games ever. At the magnificent

Cowboys Stadium before 42,822

screaming fans, Davis made a

new name for himself with his

outstanding play.

It wasn’t just the front group

doing a good job; they had help

from Sabian Homes and Matt

Swoyer took care of plenty busi-

ness in the secondary. When you

consider the fact the Dragons

had to contend with the likes of

Bralon Addison who went for

more than 200 yards on the

ground but they held Addison to

only five of eight for 63 yards

and one score in the air. That

basically was the key to the win.

This also marks the first time

since we started covering UIL

State Championships that we

went 6 for 6 in the selecting of

the MVP both three on offense

and three on defense. Usually

we see it differently from some

of the others in the media, but

not this time. It could very well

be it was just so clear who had

the better games this time

around.

JAYLEN HILL-ALEDO

Arlington, Texas-It’s rare that a

defensive lineman dominate a

high school football game but

that‘s what happened when

Aledo won their third straight

State title. At the Wonderful

Cowboys Stadium Jaylen Hill

led the Bearcats defense to a big

49-28 win over Manvel for the

state class 4A Division II.

Before a big crowd of 43,369

fans in the Cowboys Stadium

was rocking as the Mavericks

came calling but the Bearcats

were not to be denied their third

straight championship.

With Johnathan Gray going for

247 yards on 30 carries and

scoring once and Matt Bishop

hitting on 14 of 17 for 183 yards

and three scores the Knight

rolled. Hill simply made lift

rough inside down low and it

took its toll early as Aledo went

up 28-7 at the half and never

looked back.

Breaking through the line and

disrupting the blocking assign-

ment all day long Hill teamed

with Patrick Smith Ryan

Dawsey and Todd Christian who

returned an interception 70 yards

for a score to make it along day

for the Mavericks.

It’s been 35 years since the

Studewood Cobras first put on

their pads and that certainly is

cause for a celebration. More

than 500 men women and chil-

That included the 2011 Super

the building for the event.

Gidrey teaches in the Aldine

It’s really nothing I can say but

As the Studewood Cobras cele-

brated their 35th Annual Awards

banquet we couldn’t help but

notice a set of twins on the

award stand. The lovely and tal-

ented pair are members of the

First Place Cobras Varsity

Cheerleaders under the direction

of the legendary Nikki Penrice.

Parents of the charming pair are

Tamika and John Hillsman and

they are in the fifth grade.

On Sundays you’ll find the

Hillsman family down at Christ

Way Missionary Baptist Church.

Both girls are fully active mem-

bers and love praising God.

In the classroom both like Math

as their favorite subject and

spend most of their spare time in

church and working on their

championship Studewood

Cobras routines.

Even when it comes to describ-

ing themselves both girls consid-

ers themselves to be friendly,

nice as well as easy going.

Funny, after talking with

Sandavia first and Semonyia

next their answers to our ques-

tions were almost the same.

On the subject of Barack Obama

becoming the first African

American President of the

United States, both girls says it’s

a very good thing and it goes to

show you can reach your goals

if you are willing to work hard.

When it comes to goals in life

Sandavia wants to become a vet-

erinarian because of her love for

animals. But Semonyia wants to

become a trail lawyer with plans

of keeping innocent people out

of jail.

They had different opinion about

their elementary school Durkee

in the Houston I.S.D. Sandavia

says if they made her principal,

she would pretty much leave

things the way they are because

she feels the present administra-

tion is doing a fine job. But on

the other hand Semonyia feels

the school could use a little

cleaning up and the class periods

overlaps making it tougher on

students to get all their work

done. “If we had fewer classes

we would be able to spend more

time to correctly get our work

done”.

In closing both girls praised

their parents their mom (Tamika)

in particular as being their most

driving force in life. “She told us

you go to school to learn all you

can so you can reach your goals

in life”. We agree with that and

would like to thank the Hillsman

family for allowing us to profile

their charming twins for our

La Marque, Texas-Traveling all

the way down to La Marque,

Texas, the Junior Varsity Cobras

fought from a 12-6 half time

deficit to a big 18-12 overtime

victory. They beat the North

Side Bulldogs after Kharee

McDaniel ran 27 yards for the

score to seal the win. But there

were plenty of good plays from

Trenton Dickerson, Ashton

Callaway and the hard running

Tyler Brown and Jorden Gidrey.

The line was working hard led

by Shamir Hightower and defen-

sive efforts of Smiley LeBlanc

and others.

With the cool air coming in off

the Galveston Bay, the Cobras

hung tough with the 14 returning

lettermen for Coach Kennon

The Bellaire Lady Cardinals

won the Houston I.S.D. Girls

28th Annual tournament with a

58-51 victory over Temple.

They were led by senior guard

Raven Burns who ripped the

nets for 27 points and junior

sensation A. J Alix who scored

24 points. The Lady Cards kept

the pressure on Temple and the

visitors simply could not keep

up. Shandize Waugh played

fairly well down low battling the

exceptional Tiesha Taylor who

led Temple. But for Coach

Tamarah Sanders it would tough

trying to figure out a way to

keep pace with the running Lady

Cardinals.

Hanging in there with three of

their top players who sat out the

game due to injuries, Coach

Michael Kramer and his girls

got a chance to see just how

good they could be. The sensa-

tional sophomore Lulu

McKinney did not suit up nor

did Bianca Winslow who was

nursing a knee injury while

McKinney had a twisted ankle.

Kinkaid beat Madison for third

place in the tournament finals at

Butler Field house. Comcast

channel 129 broadcasted the

game and reran it a couple of

time as well.

One thing came out of this is the

Bellaire Lady Cardinals are cer-

tainly going to have something

to say about who goes to state

from Region III Class 5A.

Houston, TX – Darrell Asberry

was named head coach of the

Texas Southern Tigers football

team today by athletics director

Dr. Charles McClelland.

Asberry was the head coach at

Shaw University in Raleigh,

North Carolina for the past five

seasons.

“If you look at his background

and his track record, he devel-

oped Shaw into one of the pre-

mier Division II football pro-

grams," said Dr. McClelland.

"He has a very high graduation

rate. We wanted somebody who

was going to come in and be a

great football coach and a great

fit for Texas Southern

University and I think Darrell

can help us achieve our goals."

As head coach, Asberry had a

40-25 overall record and a 30-

13 conference record at Shaw.

He captured three CIAA

Championships in five seasons

(2007, 2008 & 2010).

His teams ranked at the top in

the nation both offensively and

defensively. He also boasts an

impressive graduation rate for

his players.

“This is a great opportunity for

me and my family to be a part

of something great like Texas

Southern,” said new TSU foot-

ball head coach Asberry. “I’ll

give 110% to help the young

men at TSU finish school and

win championships. Texas

Southern is striving to be the

best and I want to be a part of

the best.”

Asberry served as offensive

coordinator at North Carolina

Central, Albany State, and

Jackson State. The Baton

Rouge, Louisiana native played

quarterback at Jackson State

where he received a bachelor’s

of science degree in Criminal

Justice.

Asberry becomes the 15th foot-

ball head coach in TSU history.

Kevin Ramsey served as interim

head coach for the 2011 season.

He will have an opportunity to

remain as defensive coordinator.

Asberry is the proud father of

two daughters, Arabria and

Armarni, and one son,

Armariyan.

Levine was named one of the

country’s Top 10 fastest-rising

assistant coaches by CBS

Houston, Texas – University of

Houston Director of Athletics

Mack Rhoades announced that

Tony Levine has been named

the school’s 12th head football

coach. Levine spent the previous

four seasons as an assistant

coach at UH, including the final

two as the assistant head coach

and special teams coordinator.

He was named the Interim Head

Coach on Dec. 10 before taking

the reins permanently today.

“I’m so pleased to be able to

announce Tony Levine as our

new head coach,” Director of

Athletics Mack Rhoades said.

“Before we began this process

we talked about the characteris-

tics we wanted in the leader of

our football program and Tony

embodies each of those quali-

ties. We spoke with former play-

ers, current student-athletes and

interviewed some of the top

football coaches in the country,

and all of our talks led us right

back to Tony.

The Jack Yates boys basketball

team rolled to a big 99-72 victo-

ry over Wheatley to take the

annual Houston I.S.D. tourna-

ment. Jumping off to a 7-0 start,

the Lions never looked back as

Greg Wise boys did their thing.

Melvin Swift had several big

dunks to the delight of the two-

third filled Delmar Field house.

“We feel Wheatley is a good

team and they played very hard

but we felt if we scored the ball,

played defense and controlled

the tempo we had a good chance

to win the game”. Swift went to

say Coach Wise has been a big

help to him correcting what he

does wrong and teaching us how

to do the job right”. In his fresh-

man year it was a little tough on

him, but now in his sophomore

season he is getting the hang of

it. “With the summer AAU ball,

we kind of learned what to do in

given situations and we share

the ball and feel we are going to

a pretty good team”. In closing

the talented sophomore went on

to say it’s important to listen

their coaching.

Yates also had excellent play

from Clyde Santee, Chris Wells

and others. Reaching the finals

by beating Sterling 96-76 the

Lions whipped the Wildcats for

the second time this season.

Wheatley had a pretty good

tournament run as well beating a

good Village School team 89-85

in the semi-finals.

In the third place game it was

The Village School over Sterling

69-54. The consolation went to

Aldine who beat Lamar 71-60.

Normally this time of the year

we have a profile called

Lineman of the Week, but

thanks to this very special line

player we had to change the

name of this column. Starting

out as a three year old cheer-

leader for the Studewood

Cobras JaKenya Young changed

her mind when she turned four.

The talented little girl was bored

with cheering and asked her par-

ents to allow her to play foot-

ball. Her parents Kenya and

James Young then went to the

flag coach Traurean Powers and

asked if they needed another

player to play on the line.

Just in case you are wondering,

yes JaKenya not only played

with the flag team that nearly

went all the way to the Super

Bowl, but she also was voted

the team’s best lineman.

During the Cobras 35th Annual

Banquet we noticed JaKenya

standing around the award table.

She asked me why her trophy

was not as tall and big as the

others. The only thing I would

think is flag team just didn’t get

a tall award as Freshman, Junior

Varsity and Varsity players. The

four year old told me she might

just have to play tackle football

next season because she wanted

one of those big trophies.

Time goes so fast it’s been

around five years since James

Young told me his wife was

expecting another baby girl.

Now this four year old sensation

is that baby they were expect-

ing. We are extremely proud of

James and his wife because

since we told them about the

Studewood Cobras all their boys

have gone through the Cobras

program and all of their daugh-

ters have cheered; now it looks

like one of their daughters is

going to star on the field as

well.

The Studewood Cobras are a

equal opportunity non-profit

organization with a (501) C 3

and sponsored in part by Fiesta.

We are please to announce that

our KIG-SIZE Mover and

Shaker for the month of

December 2011 is Ms. Kim

Willis. Ms. Willis is the high

school English teacher and the

high school sponsor at ABC-

West, a school in Harris County

Department of Education

Special Schools Division. Ms.

Willis’s view of education is

best described by the African

proverb, “it takes a village to

raise a child.” It also takes a

village to educate our students.

Ms. Willis knows the impor-

tance of an education and wants

to see all of her students suc-

cessfully complete the program

at her school, as well as receive

a high school diploma. She is

tireless in motivating her stu-

dents to do the right thing with

their behaviors and academics.

Ms. Willis says, “My students’

successes are also my success-

es.”

Ms. Willis holds degrees from

Delgado Community College

and University of Houston-

Downtown. She is pursuing the

Master of Education in Teacher

Leadership degree from Lamar

University. Ms. Willis brings a

diverse background to the class-

room – law enforcement, print

marketing, life experiences, and

a passion for reading. Her

daughter, Sarah, is a high school

chemistry teacher. Her daughter,

Abbey, has followed her mom’s

footsteps in the print industry.

Also in Atlanta are Sarah’s hus-

band, James, and their awesome

daughter and first grandchild,

Kenleigh.

Ms. Willis volunteered exten-

sively in New Orleans at the

Lazarus House, Super Bowl

XXXVI, and at the 2005 Junior

Olympics swim venue. In

Houston, Ms. Willis donates

platelets through the Gulf Coast

Regional Blood Center. Ms.

Willis stated that “blood dona-

tion of any type is important in

all communities and requires a

very small commitment of your

time. Platelet donations take a

little bit more time, but this type

donation serves a critical need

for patients with cancer”. If you

ever receive a transfusion, you

can thank a donor like Ms.

Willis.

Over the holidays, Ms. Willis

informed me that she will wel-

come a new family member,

Dexter. Dexter is a rescued

Great Dane and will move from

Florida to Houston. Ms. Willis

has also helped to place two

other Great Danes for a friend’s

“big dog” rescue.

As you can now see Ms. Willis

is a very busy educator, volun-

teer, and lover of man’s best

friend, that’s why she is the

KIG-SIZE Mover and

Shaker for the month of

December.

A KING-SIZE MOVER AND SHAKER: MS. KIM WILLISBy Dr. Victor Keys

A King-Size View

I was recently in attendance at

the 2011 Outback Tournament,

won by Fort Bend Travis over

Fort Bend Bush. The score was

in the fifties. I have watched

several other games and the

result have been about the same.

Thank goodness for Yates and

Wheatley in the just concluded

Houston I.S.D. tournament with

Yates scoring 99 points. I have

come to a conclusion and know-

ing full well that I will be

laughed at to even make this

suggestion won’t stop me from

laying it out there in my column.

This IS the way I see it-a shot

clock in needed in high school

basketball. It is so obvious a

need that I can attest that it will

never ever happen. Coaches will

never agree to it and will fight

like mad to stop it. Some fans

feel the strategy will harm the

sport of high school basketball.

Some athletes will feel the game

will change so drastically that

only certain types of players will

be able to play the game. I have

a response to all those comments

along with many more that some

people will come up with: ‘get

real’! The game on the high

school level is becoming

increasingly unwatchable. It just

isn’t enjoyable to sit and watch

ten players (boys or girls) hold a

ball or pass it several times and

not make any attempt to score.

This is basketball strategy? Let’s

be real here; those who champi-

on the game argue that it has the

most athletic athletes on the

planet. Athletic athletes should

be allowed to exhibit their phys-

ical talent. Maybe some think a

first quarter score where eight

points scored between two teams

is exciting, but don’t count me

as one of them. And please don’t

count fans around the globe that

enjoy the ‘great action’. The

game has changed. The athletes

are in better physical condition.

The coaches (not all) need to

teach their athletes the game of

basketball. Shooting, rebounding

and defense to name a few. How

about free throw shooting, espe-

cially late in the game (please

dear readers, I can’t talk about

how bad free shooting is-I’ll

never finish the column). We

want to see exciting basketball

on every level from little leagues

to the professional ranks. A shot

clock is not going to make the

game worse. But trust me is

going to be worse if this holding

the ball for five minutes a quar-

ter is allowed to continue. I’m

not a coach nor did I play bas-

ketball in high school. I’ve

watched the game for many

years and seen how it has fallen

over a period of time. A shot

clock won’t improve bad shoot-

ing; poor defense or free throw

shooting. It won’t help young

players to think of passing first

to other teammates and creating

better offense. It won’t make

players play defense with their

feet instead of reaching out with

their hands. Good coaching will

teach all of this! Bad teams

playing against a well-coached

disciplined team will be beaten-

like a drum. A shot clock in high

school is like a national champi-

onship tournament in college

football-wonderful to think

about but not even close to reali-

ty.

That’s just the way I see it!

Prairie View A&M football will

be well-represented in the third

annual HBCU All-Star Bowl as

four seniors have received an

opportunity to showcase their tal-

ents in front of professional

scouts at The Georgia Dome in

Atlanta.

The HBCU Bowl teams are made

up of 100 of the top eligible sen-

iors amongst the Historically

Black Colleges and Universities,

in an East vs. West style format.

The East team is made up of

players from the MEAC and

CIAA while the West team is

made up of players from the

SWAC and the SIAC.

Throughout the week, the Prairie

View A&M quartet of defensive

end Adrian Hamilton, cornerback

Moses Ellis, offensive linemen

James Dekle and Tim Tusey had

the opportunity to receive

instruction from the coaching

staff of the CFL’s Calgary

Stampeders throughout their

practice sessions. In addition,

every player participated in a

one-day NFL Combine in front of

various scouts while also involv-

ing themselves in an assortment

of community service projects

and seminars which focused on a

variety of areas from finances to

life in general.

The nation’s sack leader with

20.5 sacks and co-SWAC

Defensive Player of the Year,

Hamilton began the week on a

solid note as Wesley Bunting,

The Director of College Scouting

for the National Football Post,

observed his performance at the

combine.

“Adrian Hamilton, who had 20-

plus sacks this year continues to

boost stock, looked great last

night and ran the low 4.7 range,”

said Bunting on his Twitter

account.

For the third-straight year,

Classics Sports Radio Network

will broadcast the HBCU All-

Star Bowl on Sunday live from

the Georgia Dome. Kickoff is

slated for 2:00 p.m. and the

pregame show will begin at 1:30

p.m. During the broadcast,

CSRN will have exclusive inter-

views with players while the

pregame show will include inter-

QUARTET OF PANTHERS TOPLAY IN HBCU ALL-STAR BOWL

A View From The Stands

By Ryan McGinty

We are happy to report to you all

we have a winner in our Name

This Car Contest. He is retired

Continental Airline employee

Wilson Willis. The Wheatley

graduate says he worked for the

big airlines for 31 years before

retiring 10 years ago. For those

of you who are familiar with the

Willis family, he and his late

wife had triplets and they all

have college degrees and are

doing well in life.

As we visited with Willis, he has

a real concern for high school

sports and always keeps up with

his Wheatley Wildcats basketball

team. In addition to that, Wilson

has a love for classic cars and is

certainly a Ford man. Fact is he

has two 1976 Lincoln Mark IVs

in his drive way. One belonged

to his late father and the other

one is his.

When asked how he found out

about A King-size View

Newspaper he had a big smile.

“I always pick it up at the Fiesta

store on San Jacinto and I find a

lot of good reading in there”.

He went to say since he is a

Ford/Lincoln man he recognized

the car right off the bat and

made the call to collect his

prizes.

Photographer Jerry Woodley is

also a Wheatley graduate so he

and Mr. Willis really hit it off

and we spent more than an hour

with him.

Don’t forget all you have to do

is give us the year, make and

This block of granite represents

toughness, hard work to either

block (offensive lineman), or

defend (down lineman and line-

backers). Eligibility for the

award is limited to those unsung

heroes in the trenches. Those

work horses up front, from end to

end. The award represents the top

college lineman of the year. The

four finalists were Alabama LB’s

Courtney Upshaw and Dont’a

Hightower, Boston College LB,

Luke Kuechly and Stanford OT

Jonathan Martin. All young these

men are worthy of this Block of

Granite.

So when the announcement of

the 2011 Lombardi Award winner

is Luke Kuechly LB, of Boston

College was spoken. It would be

his second award in some days.

He had already picked up the

2011 Butkus Award. 2011

Lombardi Award winner Luke

Kuechly, LB, Boston College,

“It’s a great award,…I think for

me the biggest thing I do is think

the people who have helped you

get there, the guys on my team,

my coaches and family. But, it’s

great award you are honored

with. When you look back on

past award winners, Nick Fairley

won it last year, Ndamukong

Suh, Brian Orakpo, those guys

were all successful in college

doing well in the pros. It’s just an

honor to be recognized with

those guys.” Representing his

school, “It’s an honor, hard work

pays off, and we didn’t so well as

a team this year. It was kind of

frustrating, but we came together

there at the end, I think we’re

going to do alright. It just shows

that even though you have a

rough season things can pop out

for you. And again, I’m going to

thank my team.”

December 2011 A King-Size View Page 27

Now at 12-1, some might say it

was a pretty good year. Others,

unrealistic would say it was a bad

year. Those are the pessimistic

perceptions that can only find

good in complaining. Why?

Because that is who they are. So,

I will cater to the optimistic point

of view. Yes, the Cougars lost the

C-USA football championship

game to Southern Miss. 49-28.

Yes, they looked sluggish. Yes,

there are a lot of questions that

couldn’t be answered. And just

getting there was not good

enough for all party’s involved.

To reach the heights that team

reached this season (BCS ranked

#7 at time of conference champi-

onship game) is to be commend-

ed.

UH got behind USM early (14-

0) and still you didn’t feel like

they were too far out of the game

because they had been tested dur-

ing the season. So you figured

that as long as there was time on

the clock the Cougars had a shot

to win. Down (21-14) at the half

you figure they would find their

rhythm and get going in the sec-

ond half. Because to get in a

shoot-out with the Cougars

means you’ve got offensive

weapons you can depend on,

good offensive weapons. But a

strange thing happened. The

defense was going to have a say

in who won this game. And that

is what made it a different game.

Which team could stop whom

when time came to put the brakes

on. Southern Miss. won because

their defense was able to answer

the call. A blocked punt (28-14),

add on touchdown (42-21), a

timely interception (49-21),

BOOM! A 2011 C-USA

Conference Championship for

the Eagles. “The way they played

was Southern Miss style football

and that’s smart, fast and physi-

cal”, stated Southern Miss Head

Co Larry Fedora. When asked

about the better team he stated

“we were the better team

today…, that’s what we had to

be; we just had to be better than

they were today that’s what hap-

pened.”

The discussion about the con-

ference losing big money

because Houston didn’t win; sim-

ply HOGWASH! Speculation of

UH Head Co Kevin Sumlin leav-

ing. Also interesting in that USM

Head Co Larry Fedora, was also

mentioned as moving on from

Southern Miss. I thought that was

the least of issues going on this

day. The bigger issue was a BCS

Bowl berth that was also at stake

along with the conference cham-

pionship. To qualify for a BCS

Bowl would have spoken vol-

umes about where the program

was and is. It would have given

UH a stronger hold on Houston

area recruiting. And to not give

Southern Miss. their shot at the

brass ring was abysmal. I agree

with USM Co Fedora, “…We

won, so we should be given that

opportunity to go to a BCS

bowl.”

To know that a second non-AQ

Conference could burst that bub-

ble. It would make the next BCS

Bowl contract agreement, a much

more interesting negotiation

amongst the school presidents

that decide bowl affiliations. But,

alas it will boil down to who will

travel to these games more than

ever, if the scuttle-buck that is

being chatted about holds true. If

you want someone to come and

sit on a program, hire a coach

older than 50 to be a coaching

facilitator.
