VERBS(KINDS OF VERBS)
WHAT IS VERB? Latin verbum meaning word.-is a word (part of speech) that in syntax conveys an action (bring, read, walk, run, learn), an occurrence (happen, become), or a state of being (be, exist, stand).
-is a word that shows an action
EXAMPLES
• I washed the car yesterday.
• The dog ate my homework.
• John studies English and French.
• Lucy enjoys listening to music.
TYPES OF VERBS
Action Linking Helping
ACTION VERB -Tells what the subject is doing

LINKING VERBS-do not express action. Instead, they connect the subject of the verb to additional information about the subject.

COMMON LINKING VERB

HELPING VERB-Helping verbs are also called ‘’auxiliary verbs’’.- have no meaning on their own.
Example
She will go to the store.
PRIMARY HELPING VERBS (3 VERBS)
be to make continuous tenses (He is watching TV.) to make the passive (Small fish are eaten by big fish.)
have to make perfect tenses (I have finished my homework.)
do to make negatives (I do not like you.) to ask questions (Do you want some coffee?) to show emphasis (I do want you to pass your exam.) to stand for a main verb in some constructions (He speaks
faster than shedoes.)
