Random Acts of Generosity and Kindness

Big-hearted gestures It doesn't take much to make a stranger feel special in our society. Just holding the door open for someone can go a long way. It seems like we do not see even those basic levels of courtesy quite often enough. That is why it's so remarkable when someone makes a real difference. When people make a decision that is so special, so jaw-droppingly generous, that they change lives forever. It happens, in big and small ways. People went out of their way for others. They donated money that they could have used themselves. They helped neighbours in crisis, or young people with medical problems. They made an effort just to put a smile on someone's face. The great thing about this kind of goodwill is that it can spread like a virus. In some of these cases, one generous act was the spark that encouraged a spree of similar kind-hearted gestures. People wanted to keep the momentum going, to maintain a pattern of giving that is all too rare.

Buying coffee for 500 strangers A man walked into a Tim Hortons in Edmonton, and ordered a large "double-double" and a Boston cream doughnut. That was just a usual customer. Then, he asked the staff how many large coffees they typically sell in a day. "A lot," the clerk answered. The man said he wanted to buy a large coffee for the next 500 customers who ordered one. He paid $895.28, and walked out. It seems the entire country took the idea and ran with it. A wave of copycats soon hit, and benefactors from Saskatoon to Calgary began buying hundreds of cups of coffee for strangers. In Ottawa, a man gave $860 to Tim Hortons cashiers and told customers to order whatever they wanted. Giving away $5 bills at an intersection What do you do when you see a person holding a poster at an intersection? If you pretend to fiddle with the radio you would have missed Doug Eaton's birthday celebration. Eaton turned 65 last year and decided to celebrate it by spending 65 minutes handing out $5 bills to people. He stood at an intersection holding a sign that said: "I have a home . . . and a car . . . and a job. Do you need a few bucks?" People didn't know what to think. Eaton also described the experience as fantastic. "Some people who don't take the money just say, 'Man, I love what you're doing. I won't take it, but would you give it to somebody who needs it?'" Selling lemonade to help a neighbour

When you are 8 years old, it can be tough to help out anyone. That didn't stop Johnny Karlinchak last year after a giant oak tree crashed through his neighbour’s house in Springfield, Virginia. Johnny first went to his piggy bank and gave his neighbour, $1.25. Then he set up a lemonade stand to raise more money. He made $21 the first day, then $108 when he tried again, and $233 on a busy Saturday.

"I lost many, many things that day," Elissa Myers told about the storm. "But things did not make me cry. The overwhelming kindness of Johnny did." The storm caused about $200,000 in damage to her house. Johnny’s 6-year-old sister Kelly died four years earlier in a car accident. His neighbours supported the family so much that they did not have to cook a meal for nine months,

Sending pizza to a hospital room Hazel Hammersley, 2 years old, has been fighting a battle with cancer. Her mother, looking for a moment of light-heartedness, wrote this message on the window of her daughter's hospital room: "Send pizza Room 4112." The photo turned up on the internet, and soon the pizzas started arriving at the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. At least 20 pizzas were delivered before an overwhelmed Hammersley family thanked everybody and said that they had received quite enough. On August 21, doctors successfully removed Hazel's stage-3 neuroblastoma in a five-hour operation. Though she must still endure a stem cell transplant, radiation therapy and more chemotherapy, doctors are optimistic. Her parents are already planning a big pizza party for the day Hazel can finally go home. Donating class trip money

Students in the Transitional Life Skills class in Tennesse, worked hard to raise money for an overnight trip to Tybee Island, Georgia. Some of them had never been to the beach before, and the class was excited to be going. But when they heard about a boy in Bridgepost, Atlanta, who died in a tornado that year, they decided to donate the $2,000 to his family instead of going on a trip. All of the students live below poverty level. It didn't take long for news of their donation to get out, though, and soon the school was bombarded with offers to help the students go on that trip.

Returning a $4,000 engagement ring Billy Ray Harris, a homeless man from Kansas City, was surprised to find a diamond engagement ring in his cup one day. A woman named Sarah Darling had taken off her ring and put it in her coin purse, and later dumped the change from her purse into his cup. Harris took the ring to a jeweller, who offered him $4,000. But he didn't sell the ring, choosing instead to wait in case the woman came back. She did, and he gave her the ring. "My grandfather was a reverend," Harris said,. "He raised me from the time I was 6 months old and thank the good Lord, it's a blessing." Darling was so moved that she went public with Harris' good deed, establishing a fund in his name. It raised $185,000. The best part? Harris' younger sister Robin, who hadn't talked to her brother in more than a decade, saw the report and was able to reunite Harris with his four siblings.

BEING KIND, IT REALLY ISN’T THAT DIFFICULT

• Read the following text • Answer the questions that follow in complete sentences

LISTEN WHEN A FRIEND NEEDS TO TALK Sometimes our friends are truly having a hard time. Of course, it is heavy to listen to. Of course, we could be anywhere else, having more fun. Of course, we know what our friend means because something similar happened to us and we would love to talk about it too. But sometimes, we must learn to be quiet, listen and try to understand the whole situation of that person who clearly needs to talk HELP OTHERS WHEN THEY CLEARLY NEED IT Once, in the subway, I saw a man who must have been 75 years old. He was very slowly going down the stairs so I helped him carry his (very heavy) stroller next to the train. He thanked me and went away and while I was wondering what he could have possibly been carrying that was so heavy, people started to come to me and tell me how wonderful I was. These people who were so impressed did not help him in the first place, but I strongly believe that they would now. SMILE Sometimes, people will not smile back, sometimes they will and sometimes you will not see them smile. They could smile further down the street because your smile would have put some happiness in an otherwise awful day. Smiling is truly underestimated… maybe that’s because it’s free? But that’s no reason not to give smiles away every time we can. TAKE THE MICROPHONE When someone is being bullied or victim of injustice, whether at work, at home or in the street, speaking out to defend him or encourage him will break the impression of being terribly lonely. You could restore his faith in humanity, right there, right then. I once saw a woman running behind a young girl who was listening to an angry boyfriend screaming at her. The woman simply told her “You don’t have to deal with this” and walked away. The look on the girl’s face changed right away, as if that woman had given her a bit of hope. This kind of action can stop violence and give a bit of courage to those who had lost it. GIVE YOUR PARKING RECEIPT Instead of letting the next person pay his parking ticket, an increasing amount of people give their receipt to the person who takes their parking spot. It’s nice, it doesn’t cost anything and it shows that with just a little effort, we can really make a stranger happy. OFFER A DRINK When the winter wind is blowing or the hot summer sun is shining, we sometimes see our nice crossing guard freezing or thirsty. If you are about to buy a coffee or a cold drink, why not buy an extra drink for her? It is very little money for someone who spends her days outside to help us out. The same goes for any other outdoor workers and for the homeless too.

VISIT YOUR FAMILY Visiting an old family member that we haven’t seen in a while or visiting our grandparents in a home or at the hospital to brighten their lonely days is another great way to make others happy. It is kind for the visited person and it shows children that families stick together. BREATHE DEEPLY BEFORE YOU TALK Patience is a virtue. With social medias, we are getting used to “talk” fast, to speak our mind and to give our opinion all the time, even when no one asks for it. However, although everyone is entitled to have an opinion, it is not always necessary to talk. It is the same at home. Breathing deeply before talking isn’t always easy but it gives people some time to choose appropriate words. TAKE TIME Taking time to answer correctly when someone talks to us and taking time to look at people makes everyone feel important and respected, this is the key to positive relations. RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS Help someone who dropped something, write to you best friend and tell her you miss her, call your auntie who was always there for you and tell her that you love her, help an old lady cross the road, help a friend build something… There are so many ways to be kind with others! Was if it was contagious? What if it was some kind of butterfly effect? What if we started looking at everyone around us as if we were part of the same team? After reading:
