For some lucky girls the term began with an excursion, including senior students who on Wednesday night went to the production of My Fair Lady at the Regent Theatre. Last night some Year 11 and 12 girls participated in the Justice and Democracy version of the Winter Sleep Out which involved sleeping overnight on the floor of the Kennedy Hall. As part of the experience the girls organise activities to learn about issues that lead to homelessness. However, the discomfort of the night finished with a hearty breakfast and a warm drink. Thanks to Mr Halliday, Mr O’Neill, Mrs Maree Edwards and Ms Jenna Cronin who supervised the evening. On Tuesday we welcomed our two Hong Kong students, Cindy Tang Xin and Shero Mok Wing Yan, who together with two male students, are staying in Melbourne for three weeks. The boys are attending Mazenod College, whilst the girls are at Killester. Our thanks goes to the Rae family who are hosting the girls during their time with us. The trip is organised by the Oblate Fathers in Hong Kong who work with students in disadvantaged areas as part of their outreach work. This week, despite the extremes in temperature, the students have managed the change in weather and have had the opportunity to see the Mazenod musical, Mary Poppins, and visit Healesville Sanctuary. A special mention of thanks to Ms Cannon who has been coordinating the activities for the girls. Year 9-11 students will be involved in subject selection over the next two weeks. This is often a tricky time for some students and if in doubt, the best advice is to always leave as many options open as possible. To assist students, especially Year 10 girls, a Subject Selection evening will be held next Wednesday. This is an opportune time for parents and students to find out more about subjects on offer in VCE. We hope many of you are able to attend this evening. Whilst this term has begun with a lot of energy, the holidays were also fairly busy for some Killester students. On the last day of Term 2 and the first weekend of the holidays three of our musical groups – the Jazz Band, String Ensemble and Big Band, went on tour to Castlemaine. I was able to visit them on the weekend and was amazed at how they managed to play in such cold weather, for despite the sunshine the air was icy. Undeterred, the girls played on the Steam Train, at the station, at the market and also at two primary schools. They were real troopers, especially when they plucked up the courage to busk. Sincere thanks to Ms Addis and Mr Hickey who took the girls on tour, as well as organised it. Continued next page ...... Blessed are you, winter, dark season of waiting, you affirm the dark seasons of our lives, forecasting the weather of waiting in hope. Blessed are you, winter, you faithfully guard a life unseen, calling those who listen deeply to discover winter rest. Blessed are you, winter, your bleak, barren trees preach wordless sermons about emptiness and solitude. Blessed are you, winter, you teach us valuable lessons about waiting in darkness with hope and trust. Loreto Cannon, School Operations and Community Development

We had some wonderful feedback not just from the primary schools, but many members of the public who stopped to listen to the girls. Other busy groups in the holidays were our Junior and Senior Netball Teams. The teams played from Monday to Friday in the International Competition held at Jells Park. Despite having to play two or three games a day, the girls stayed focussed and enthusiastic. Two ex Killester students, Daniela Tomaselli and Morgan Thomas, coached the teams and showed great care and support towards the players. For us bystanders, cheering the girls in the cold was made all the easier by hot chips. Well done to all the students who participated in the competition and our sincere thanks to Morgan and Daniela.

Lastly, we had twenty girls participate in our two-day holiday programme. The girls had the opportunity to go to the movies together as well as do a variety of other activities, including cooking. The programme is coordinated by Ms Mills and supported by Mrs Tucker and Mrs Curtis. From all accounts, the days were a great success.

Best wishes for a successful Term 3 for all our girls,

Leanne Di Stefano

From the Music Department

It was cold in Melbourne at the start of the holidays, but not as cold as Castlemaine, where the music students were braving the icicles to add some warmth to the local community. The first gig was played as frost lay thick on the ground and the girls were struggling to warm up their frozen instruments. The students of Chewton primary loved the show anyway, as did the Castlemaine primary students later in the day.

Friday afternoon saw the girls delighting the punters outside the Theatre Royal, before slipping in to watch the local high school concert. Then we were off to be truly terrified the Castlemaine Gaol ghost tour.

Saturday brought the Hogwarts Express train (also known as the Victorian Goldfields Train) to Castlemaine where the students performed on platform 9 3/4 then on board the train to the lovely town of Maldon. On Sunday we performed at the market and then enjoyed the lovely, local produce before setting off home, ready to thaw out and sleep in our own beds.
