Out and About ......

On Tuesday morning at 11.00am the College community paused for the ANZAC service. The Year 12 leaders: Tasneem Usman, Karina Diaz, Martina Duong, Isabella Jenkins, Sandy Thai and Kim Le, presented a wonderful reminder to the students regarding the Gallipoli campaign and that "we have a legacy of responsibility, that the heritage fought at so costly a price should not suffer in our hands; so that the word ANZAC does not so much commemorate an event as a standard of character in action which we must maintain in all circumstances - in peace as in war." Thanks also to Mr Jeff Vague (Music teacher here at the College, and ex-Navy, and Mikayla Lowther (bugle) for their roles in the service.

We have two inter-school sporting events next week - SCSA Badminton and SESG Basketball / Badminton / Futsal - good luck to the teams. All Year 11s will be attending the performance of Medea at the Drum Theatre on Thursday. The Music Tour to Mt Gambier commences at 6.30am on Friday - it will be a long drive and a busy weekend, but there is great excitement within the Music students and faculty staff.

Next week is also "Student Council" week, so there will be many activities organised for lunchtimes by the committee.

Last Sunday five Killester student leaders attended the Springvale RSL ANZAC Memorial Service. Student representatives from all Primary and Secondary schools in the City of Greater Dandenong attend this event yearly.

The ceremony is marked by reflections, readings, music and solemn prayer. This year Abigail Bartha, Year 12 Leader, recited In Flanders Fields. Her rendition was heart felt and praised by many of the RSL members.

Other Killester leaders took part in the laying of a wreath at the Springvale cenotaph. Thank you to these leaders for representing Killester College at this important event, remembering our history how our culture has been shaped through our involvement and sacrifice in a number of world conflicts.Thank you to Sarah Lui, Veronica Maroun, Martina Duong and Stephanie Nguyen.

FeesA reminder that, unless you have a confirmed instalment payment arrangement with the College, the due date for payment of fees was 28/2/18 and all fees are now overdue. If there is some difficulty in managing this payment, please call today and make an appointment with the Business Manager, Sandra Rotunno, to discuss other payment options. If we do not hear from you, it is expected that all fees will be paid by the end of this month.

CSEFIf you currently hold a valid Health Care Card or Pension Card you are eligible for the CSEF (Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund) payment from the State Government. To receive this payment, (that will be credited to your fee account), you will need to come to the Finance Department of the school front office and complete an application form. You need to present your concession card when submitting the application. If you are eligible and have not submitted a form as yet, please do so now to receive the allowance. Without a completed form you will miss out on the $225 credit per student.

The Year Seven students have participated in the final phase of the leadership process at Killester College. Prior to the Orientation Camp at Phillip Island, the students nominated themselves for the fourteen leadership roles from the Committee and House Leaders positions. Many of the students have held leadership positions at Primary school and were eager to nominate themselves again as part of the Year 7 transition process. We had a large number of students applying for the positions. The nomination forms were displayed in the Year 7 area for each student to read and make notes about their suitability for leadership. The students established new friendships at camp and became aware of the qualities a leader exhibits and expectations required of that position. They learned more about each other at camp.

The students completed a one minute speech in front of their cohort, many taking notes regarding important aspects of the individual speeches. The final voting took place at lunchtime, with students using correct voting procedures with ballot slips and boxes present.

The Year 7 team counted the votes to determine the winners.

On behalf of all Year 7 level team and students I am proud to announce the following Year 7 Student Leaders 2018. These girls will be receiving their badges in the next Year 7 Level Assembly. They will also be working extremely hard for their level and with Senior Leaders. Well done to all students who nominated for a position.

A huge thank you to Ms Doko and the Year 8 Student Leaders who conducted the voting on the day. It was much appreciated.

Important FINAL Reminder from the Finance Office

Last Term Year 11 went on an educational tour of our national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy. The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes some funds under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate or PACER program. We acknowledge the PACER program's contribution to our trip to Canberra and we thank them for their support so we could explore the wonders of Canberra.

On Thursday the 19th of April the Year 10 Photography class travelled into the city to take photos on the theme ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’. The students used analogue SLR cameras to capture the magical sites of the Melbourne CBD. They explored the Arts district in Saint Kilda Rd; the spire, water features at the Art Gallery and the sculpture garden were great photo topics.

We then ventured to Southbank, where there was ample opportunity to photograph the Yarra River and its riverside restaurants. The students took advantage of the beautiful misty Autumn morning to take lots of photos. By this stage they were getting used to their cameras, clicking the shutter and rolling the film.

Our adventure then took us to the charming laneways of Melbourne with their cramped outdoor cafes, cobbled streets and Art Nouveau street lamps.

Then, just like Alice, we were thrown into another world; the enchanting world of arcades. The girls took many photos of the Hopetoun Tea rooms; the window display of scrumptious desserts would bring delight to any Mad Hatter’s tea party. In the arcade we also encountered Gog and Mago, who have been chiming bells for over a hundred years.

The students emerged from the arcades to the bustle of Burke Streets and, for many, the challenge of changing films.

After a quick lunch our next photo point was Federation Square with its interesting architecture, many steps and people scattered everywhere on lunch break.

Lastly, it was a hop, skip and jump to Hosier Lane. The students enjoyed photographing the amazing graffiti and it provided one last chance to use up film before we made our way home……exhausted!

Intermediate VCAL students work with parents from the Family Learning Centre

On Monday 23 April 2018 the Intermediate VCAL students met the parents at the Family Learning Centre. We introduced ourselves and then did a multiple choice quiz about Australia. The parents went well and we were surprised at how much they knew about Australia.

Then we and the parents talked about what country we came from and when we moved to Australia. Each student showed the parents a picture of the flag from their country of origin. We went through the recipe for the Anzac biscuits which we will make together next week and we then sang the Australian National Anthem.

On Tuesday 24 April both the Senior and Intermediate VCAL students went to the South East Careers Expo at the Cranbourne Race Course with Mrs Wilman and Mrs Campion. There were many stalls at the expo such as Holmesglen, Monash University, Chisholm, McDonalds, the Police and a mobile barista van. I especially liked the Police because I got an insight into what they do. I also liked the Navy because I am considering this as a future career. While we were there we received many complimentary items such as jelly beans, dog and cat accessories, drink bottles and rulers. Some students got their hair done and looked stunning. Some students learnt how to make barista coffees, and decorated cupcakes. Overall it was a successful day.

On Monday the 23rd of April, during our Homeroom lesson, the Year 9s saw a play which was about respecting yourself and others in a variety of situations. The performance was funny but covered serious issues which really made the message effective. The play was performed in a way which made it easy to connect with teenagers. The performance was also quite interactive and made the students think quickly about all the information they had just learnt. All the Year 9s really seemed to enjoy the performance and take something out of it.
