We at Castlecomer Credit Union have been serving the people of Ballyfoyle, Castlecomer, Clogh, Connahy, Coon, Mooneenroe and Muckalee, since our formation on Wednesday 15th February 1967.

Our credit union is run and overseen by a group of unpaid volunteers who are elected by the credit union members at the annual AGM at the end of the year. A Board of Directors is elected to direct the running of the credit union and also a group of three supervisors are elected to independently ensure that the credit union is being directed in a proper manner for the benefit of all members.

Our Credit Union is owned by it members. The Credit Union uses member’s savings to provide affordable loans for other members. The Credit Union encourages people to save regularly and then when they have built up a savings record, to take out loans if and when they require them.

Historically, Castlecomer Credit Union grew steadily between 1967 and 2008, the collapse in the Irish economy has impacted on the Credit Union Sector, but to a lesser extent as compared to other financial institutions as the credit union has managed to continue to be able to pay a dividend to its members. The board of directors are continually examining the viability of Castlecomer Credit Union. While the possibility of merging with another credit union is a consideration the Board have agreed that no such merger will occur at present.

The Board of Directors aims to steer the Credit Union on a course that will enable it to increase its membership, while at the same time engage with its current members, and strengthen its position in the local community. To attain this, the Board of Directors are focused on the following objectives: Retain existing membership. Encourage new members. Maintain existing and provide new services to our membership to meet their changing needs. Use all available methods of communicating with our members including our website printed media, digital media and social media. Create a personal relationship with our members. Become more involved in our community through sponsorship and support. Introduce a draw for members. To improve the level of service we provide to our members. Create a relationship with all the schools within the common bond to maximise potential membership and educate future members on the operating principles of the credit union movement and the services available. Treat all our members equally Promote a good loan application experience for members, and minimise time taken for a decision on future applications. Introduce an interest rebate for members annually. Make use of the latest technological advances to improve our services to members.

Castlecomer Credit Union recently launched their website www.castlecomercu.ie. The website allows members to access their accounts, check their balance and view transactions. There is also a lot of information about the Credit Union on our website, including a loan calculator which is a very useful tool for members to assess their ability to repay a loan.

There are a number of forms available on the website such as membership application form, and a loan application form. We will be developing the website over time to include online bill payment, transfer of funds to other accounts etc. We would encourage members

to register online and enter an email address so they can receive the newsletters and information about future developments of the Credit Union. Approximately 64% of the households in the common bond have access to computers and the internet.

We will be launching a Facebook page shortly and would encourage members with a Facebook account to like and share the Credit Union page and they will then be alerted to upcoming events and developments within the Credit Union. We will have competitions on our Facebook page so watch out for that.

We are also considering the introduction of debit cards to members, which will give members access to the funds 24 hours a day seven days a week. This development will take time but we hope to be in a position to deliver these services during 2014.

As we have no transaction charges we would encourage members to transfer their wages to their Credit Union account. Anyone wishing have their wages paid to their Credit Union account should contact the Credit Union for further details.

We currently have the service for members to pay their utility bills at Castlecomer Credit Union. We are considering the introduction of budget accounts for members to assist members in mamaging the household finances.

Since its introduction there is greater demand for debit card services by members as they come to appreciate the their convenience. This facility will allow members to make a payment over the phone and the receipt is given to the member when they call in to the Credit Union.

Our opening hours are:Monday CLOSEDTuesday 9.30am - 5.00pm (open through

lunch)Wednesday 9.30am - 5.00pm (open

through lunch)Thursday 9.30am - 5.00pm (open through

lunch)Friday 9.30am - 5.00pm (open through

lunch)

Saturday 9.30am - 5.00pm (open through lunch)

As a Credit Union operates within a what is called a common bond area, we are not competing with other credit unions for a share of the market. Our main competitors for loans are Banks, Finance Companies, and money lenders. The following tables show the cost for

similar loans from the Credit Union and their competitors.

The results show clearly that borrowing from Castlecomer Credit Union is cheaper on each example above. The Credit Union rate used in the above examples was the personal loan rate of 10.52% APR. The Comparison betwen Provident Ireland and Castlecomer Credit Union needs no explanation as the advertised interest rate of 157.3% APR for Provident is not competitive.

The interest rates of Castlecomer Credit Union are only charged on the remaining

6 11 2013 KILKENNY REPORTER ADVERTISING FEATURE | 37

balance of a loan. We have three interest rates which we apply to loans:

Standard Personal Loans 10.52% APRStudent Loans 6.18% APRGuaranteed Loans 5.65% APR

Guaranteed loans are loans granted to members which are less than the value of their shares. An amount of shares equal to the loan balance are held as security againast the loan. This amount reduces with the declining loan balance. For futher information on any of the above rates or to apply for a loan please call in to the Credit Union and speak to one of the loans officers. There is no need for an appointment.

The competitors which have not been analysed in the above examples are the Car Finance Companies. There is a significant difference in the way the Finance companies operate in comparison to the Credit Union. The finance companies operate a hire purchase agreement with the consumer. This agreement means the ownership of the vehicle does not transfer to the consumer until the final payment has been made by the consumer. The finance companies require an initial deposit of between 10% and 30% of the retail price of the car being purchased. They also require a baloon payment at the end of the term of the hire purchase agreement.

Apart from the Credit Union being cheaper, the Credit Union member has full ownership of the car from the begining of the agreement.

The research on all the competitors demonstrates the competitive position of Castlecomer Credit Union. The interest rate used for Castlecomer Credit Union in the examples above was 10.52%, which is the personal loan rate. This is the highest interest rate charged by Castlecomer Credit Union.

The layout of the the Credit Union has changed recently with the erection of a partition at the loans counter. Members privacy is very important to the Credit Union and it is envisaged this partition will give members

more privacy when making a loan application. We offer the following services to our

members:

Shares Loans to Members Household Bill Payment Savings Stamps MABS payments County Council Morgtage Payments Life Savings Insurance Loan Protection Insurance Death Benefit Insurance

Health Insurance GroupScheme Debit Card Payments Express Lodgement Facility Scholarships

Our main product is loans to members at very competitive interest rates. The other products and services are provided at no cost to Credit Union members. The range of products and services could be extended to include budget accounts, online bill payments, online loan enquiries, direct debits, debit cards, and an

APP for mobile phones. We want to meet the needs of our members in the current economic climate.

One method of meeting the needs of our members is to offer an interest rebate to our members with performing loans. The rebate will refund a percentage of the interest paid by the member during the financial year. This would equate to a cut in the loan interest rates and would reward the borrowers whose repayments are up to date. The rebate would be paid to members in early December, in time for Christmas and the members would be allowed to withdraw the rebate for their own personal use.

We will work with all the schools in the common bond to educate the children on how to use the credit union from an early age. We will talk to their families annually on the best ways to prepare for third level education for their children starting as they enter secondary school which gives families up to six years to prepare. We are currently working with the transition year students in Castlecomer Community School on a project which will benefit the students and Castlecomer Credit Union. This project will come to fruition early in 2014.

Castlecomer Credit Union has a scholarship which is awarded to one student each year. All student members can enter the draw for the scholarship which takes place at the Annual General Meeting each year. The Scholarship is for a three year period. For further details contact Castlecomer Credit Union.

We will introduce a newsletter for our members which would be freely available. The personnel of the Credit Union know the members by name and have built a relationship with the members. This is very important for the members and for the future of the Credit Union.

We are very competitive with our interest rates. If we introduce an interest rebate annually and a dividend our membership will grow. This will make Castlecomer Credit Union viable and secure for the next generation. This is your Credit Union, and we encourage you to make the best use of your membership to meet your own needs.

Fight the Winter

WOBBLE

6 11 2013 KILKENNY REPORTER

FIVE WAYS TO FIGHT

Ward off winter weight gain and combat comfort food cravings with these tips.Do you find sticking to a

healthy eating plan during

the cooler months a bit more

difficult? Or is it that bulk

layers are such good camou-

flage for extra kilos? Follow

these steps to ward off the

winter wobble.

1. Eat low-GICommon winter vegetables

such as potatoes, pumpkin,

and parsnips tend to have a

higher glycemic index (GI)

than summer produce such

as carrots, cucumbers or

capsicum. Foods with a high

GI cause a rapid rise in blood

sugar (glucose) levels, which

causes a spike in insulin that

results in fat storage. Instead

fill your plate with dark leafy

greens, such as kale, silver-

beet and spinach, or Asians

Greens – all of which have a

low GI values, and are at peak

during the cooler months.

Toss them in a smoothie,

make soup or garnish pastas.

RECIPE:

Green smoothie (serves 1):1/2 cup milk of your choice

(cow’s soy, almond, rice)

1 banana

1 cup spinach leaves or kale

2 tbsp live natural yoghurt

1 tsp LSA (linseed, almond

and sunflower) meal

Couple of ice cubes

Cinnamon and honey to taste.

Place all ingredients into a

blender and blitz until smooth.

Serve with 1 wholegrain toast

and spread of your choice.

2. Add protein early. While this is important all

year-round, with busy-sched-

ules and shorter days, you

may find yourself scrimping

on morning nutrition. Eating

a protein-rich breakfast does

more than just fill your belly.

It can help control appetite

and curb the late afternoon

munchies. Opt for poached

eggs or omelete, multigrain

bread with nut spreads, cot-

tage cheese or beans, or fruit

smoothies made with natural

yoghurt.

3. Keep an eye on comfort foods. With less sunny hours, your

stored serotonin (“feel-good”

brain chemical) starts to

decline. Your cravings for

high-carbohydrate comfort

foods are your brains plea

for more serotonin. Mashed

potato anyone? Opt instead

for a variety of whole grains

(brown rice, rye, oats, quinoa,

barley). Couple this with a

warming bowl of home-made

soup, steamed vegetables, or

THE WINTER WOBBLE

a slow-cooked casserole made

with lean meat and legumes.

RECIPE:

Mushroom Barley Risotto (serves 4)1 tbsp olive oil

1 cup pearl barley

1 medium onion, finely diced

1 zucchini, thinly sliced diced

1 cup diced mushroom

1 tspn dried oregano

2 gloves of garlic, crushed or

finely chopped

2 cups of reduced- salt

chicken stock

1 cup parmasan, shaved

Heat a large saucepan over

medium heat and add oil,

onion and garlic until soften.

Add mushroom, zucchini and

oregano, stir a little, season

with salt and pepper, then turn

down the heat and stir in the

barley, until lightly coated with

oil. Add the stock and bring

to the boil. Reduce to simmer,

and let cook with the lid on for

50 minutes. Season with salt,

pepper and grated parmesan.

Option to serve on it’s own, or

use 1 cup with 100g of grilled

chicken breast or red meat

4. Snack with purpose. There’s a big difference be-

tween mindless munching and

strategic snacking. Snacking

with purpose means keeping

blood sugar and energy levels

steady, and filling the nutri-

tional gaps between meals

– rather than an opportunity

to comfort yourself with more

food. Sensible choices include

natural yoghurtfresh fruit,

plain popcorn, veggie sticks

with hummous, and nuts.

5. Increase exercise. When the outside tempera-

ture drops, it’s easy to let your

fitness regime fall by the way

side. Here’s the good news:

you can significantly increase

your overall calorie burn with

small bursts of ‘incidental’

activity or everyday activities:

parking the car further away

from where you need to be,

taking the stairs instead of the

lift, or doing push ups during a

commercial break are all easy

ways to keep moving and burn

calories.

Coming from the creator of Love Actually, Four Weddings and a Funeral and Notting Hill, you

might understandably expect About Time to be a romantic comedy. After all, it is fronted by Rachel McAdams and Anna Karenina’s Domhnall Gleeson. Don’t be fooled. This is not a movie about romance. It’s about a far more encompassing idea of love, embracing lovers, friends, and family in a way that makes About Time a rich and wonderful narrative.

If you could relive moments of your life until you get them just as you want, what would you do? “For me, it was always going to be all about love,” says young Tim (Gleeson), the eager but naïve romantic at the center of Curtis’s latest dramedy. On his 21st birthday, Tim’s loving father (the deeply charming Bill Nighy) tells him of the incredible inheritance to which he is now entitled. It’s not money, but rather the Y-chromosome imprinted ability to travel back within his own lifetime. His father warns him this gift should be used as a tool to help him get what he really wants in life. And for the first half of the film, Tim really wants a girlfriend.

He uses his powers to get a second chance at a first kiss or make a better introduction to a girl he thinks might be the one.

Science-fiction fans may gnash their teeth over the inconsisten-cies in Curtis’s brand of time

travel, as clarity and consistency are sacrificed in favor of dramatic pacing. Here, time travel is used as a tool to discuss the choices we make to do what’s best for us or what’s best for our loved ones, which sometimes means giving up on living in the past. Curtis’s exploration of this theme is emotionally profound, underlined by a pitch perfect soundtrack that includes songs from Nick Cave, Ben Folds, and Jimmy Fontana-- guaranteed to draw tears as he presents a pocket of possibility for time travel that is beautiful and bittersweet. Yet Curtis’s ear for snappy dialogue gives About Time an effervescence, while the cast imbues it with a rich warmth.

Gleeson is darling as our lanky hero, handling the awkward romantic introductions as well as the father-son plotline with a vibrant humor. Outstanding sup-port is given by Lindsay Duncan as Tim’s brusque mother, Lydia Wilson as his wild child sister, Richard Cordery as the lovably befuddled Uncle Desmond, and Tom Hollander as Tim’s ever-furious playwright friend Harry. But it’s Nighy who grounds the movie with his role as the time-traveling bookworm who is an easy-going patriarch to this clan. His performance seems so effort-less that his and Tim’s relation-ship feels authentically lived-in, making the film’s final act all the more powerful.

Sadly McAdams is a weak

spot. She’s cute and affable as Mary, but she seems miscast, especially with the costuming department desperately playing down McAdams’s natural beauty, saddling her with a bad haircut and clunky matronly clothes. And her charm, while welcome, is wasted on a character that is more a plot necessity than a person. There’s no conflict or complexity to her character. She’s just a tool to teach us about Tim. Mary doesn’t care about the details of her wedding to Tim. He can pick the when, where and who of it all. She’ll just show up in an unconventional dress and look glorious and be a perfect symbol of marital happiness achieved.

Aside from this underwritten character and bizarre casting choice, Curtis has made a fan-tastic and inventive modern-day fable. Tim’s extraordinary ability sets him apart from the rest of the world, giving him a chance to relive any day of his life again. Yet in doing that he discovers he really isn’t that different from the rest of us. His choices are just like ours, deciding to get caught up in what has passed, or to live for to-day and accept that life goes on. Curtis creates this narrative with a sensational sense of joy and a ribbon of tragedy that makes the former all the sweeter. Beyond being a movie that will make you laugh and cry, About Time is that rare cinematic treat that can make you better appreciate life itself.

ABOUT TIME

6 11 2013 KILKENNY REPORTER

For decades people have claimed that Orson Scott Card’s heralded science-fiction novel was brilliant but unfilmable. Set almost entirely in space and featuring massive battle scenes, the budget requirements alone would have understandably scared off studio execs. With major advancements in computer graphics, writer-director Gavin Hood was apparently confident he could make this book into the movie it deserved to be at long last. But could he condense an intense book about mind games and the innermost emotions of a young soldier into a captivating adventure? In a word: absolutely. Ender’s Game is set in a world brought together by alien attack. 50 years before the film begins, a bug-like race invaded, but was ultimately squashed by human forces. Still, Earth’s casualties were world changing. To defend against presumed future attacks, The International Military was created, and a relentless train-ing program was formed to groom children to become commanders, who will direct the movements of gigantic space warships. Ender Wiggin (Asa Butterfield) is a boy in this program whose skill for strategy sets him apart in the eyes of the ruthlessly pragmatic Colonel Graff (Harrison Ford). Be-lieving Ender could be the one to put down the alien threat for good, Graff puts the boy through an especially brutal training regi-men that will not only test his tactics but also his very sanity in hopes of making him the greatest commander the world has ever seen. While preparing for this interplan-etary battle, Ender must not only concern himself with the task before him but also confront his own crisis of identity. Of course, all of this might have meant nothing if it weren’t for the supremely solid performance from young Butterfield. He has an incredibly difficult role in Ender, a boy who is self-assured in his skills but not cocky, who is kind but not weak. Butterfield is in nearly every scene of Ender’s Game and whether he’s staring down Graff, fighting with Bonzo or flirting with the bold and beautiful cadet Petra (Hailee Steinfeld), he is engaging and emotionally honest. This isn’t the movie kid who is endlessly quip-ping and too cool to cry. In one particularly disturbing sequence, Butterfield’s eyes brim with tears and he screams in frustration that makes his voice crack. It’s details like this that ground all this heady sci-fi in an emotionally captivating reality. All this--the spectacular special effects, the deft storytelling and the strong ensemble performances--blend together to create a pretty remarkable movie that I believe both kids and grownups can appreciate. It’s not just a thrilling adventure about space and war. It’s also a thoughtful story about grow-ing up and figuring out not just who you are, but who you hope to become. And with a third act that refuses to pull its punches, it’s easy to imagine that many will cling to this more mature take on a child savior tale just as millions have to the book on which its based.

Give your cat a stimulating home environment. This is particularly important if it is an ‘indoor’ cat. Think three dimensionally by providing comfy sleeping places high up as well as offering a variety of different level shelves for the cat to climb on.

Cardboard boxes with a hole cut in the side, as well as paper bags, make great cheap toys for your cat, and can be easily replaced.

Cats can be trained too! Clicker training is a kind and fun method of training your cat all sorts of tricks

In multi-cat households make sure that there is enough space for each of the cats to have some privacy. All cats like to have their own space.

Do not assume that cats in the same house are happy to share their food bowls. Provide a choice of feeding locations - some cats prefer to eat on the ground, others in a high location.

Do not tell your cat off if it is having toileting problems as this may make the problem worse. Take it to the vet for a check up.

Never force a cat to interact - they like to feel in control.

Hide dried food around the house for your cat to find during the day or provide it with a spe-cial activity ball so that it has to ‘hunt’ for its food. Cats need to hunt so make sure that suitable games are available to cater for this instinct.

Use fishing rod type cat toys to play with your cat or kitten and not your fingers as you may get scratched! Remember that adult cats need to play too – so play regular games with suitable toys.

A coir door mat securely fixed to an upright wall makes an ideal scratching post and helps to keep your cat’s claws healthy. Spray or rub some ‘cat nip’ on it to make it even more attractive to your cat.

FILM

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)There is something so inherently disturbing about the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, a wrongness that gets under your skin and makes the film more horrifying now than even the latest hor-ror tripe flooding the box office. The film is a definitive piece of German Expressionism and the sets reflects this, instead of filming in a real location we are given a landscape of jagged, thorned architecture and twisting roads that make the film feel incredibly uneven and askew. While most films of the era were infatuated with capturing the real world, Dr. Caligari gives us something completely unique that has never

truly been replicated. The fact that the film is both foreign and extremely old also aids in making it feel as it does since it’s a culture com-pletely alien from our own. I would argue that the film is actually more horrifying now than it was in 1920, though we wouldn’t scare as easily as crowds then would. The opening of the film is completely surreal with the main character of Francis sitting beside an old man. The first lines out of the old man are seemingly without context: ‘Spirits surround us on every side… They have driven me from hearth and home, from wife and child’. After this the woman who is apparently Francis’s fiancé’s walks by looking like a ghost which prompts Francis to tell the story of Dr. Caligari. This main story is of an-other old man and his somnambulist, a creature

that can predict the future. When the Somnam-bulist predicts that Francis’s friend will be dead by dawn (and then is dead by dawn) it prompt Francis to discover who this man is and whether he is responsible for the murder. Though, like a great many horror films, the plot is not what makes the film so great, it’s the atmosphere. It’s how everything in the film is so disjointed and unnerving. From the characters to the music to the sets to the plot, everything is crooked and nothing is familiar; the only way I could find to describe it was just to outline the opening scene. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari will always have a place in history as one of the most influ-ential films of all time, but the finished product is still an incredibly fascinating and engaging piece that should definitely be experienced.

BOOK

J.M Coetzee- Life and Times of Michael K. (1983)Even if you don’t like most or even all of his works, one can’t deny that the style and themes employed by Coetzee are never the same twice. Of his thirteen novels published over the last 39 years, two have won Booker prizes; Disgrace was one of them and the other was this: Life and Times of Michael K. The two books couldn’t be more differ-ent, while Disgrace is a straight-forward work examining the world of post-apartheid South Africa through the eyes of a learned though morally bankrupt University professor, Michael K is a completely allegorical work, highly reminiscent of Kafka whose main character is implied to be mentally handicapped. It’s his most famous Apartheid-era novel and deals with the subject heavily even though it is never mentioned by name. The story

is about Michael K, a simple gardener with a harelip living in South Africa during a fictional civil war in the 1970’s. He has no wife or children, just his mother who is now ill and whom he lives to serve. After the mother decides that she wants to return to the farm she grew up in to live out her final days, Michael makes a barrow and intends to carry her the hundreds of miles to Prince Albert. Over the course of the book Michael is harassed and imprisoned and faced with hardships every step of the way. Seemingly Michael’s goal is to just live with decency, to not be imprisoned or in hospital or given charity, just to be treated as an equal. Coetzee’s writing in the book is absolutely superb; his prose is simple but full of depth and will reward repeating readings. He makes use of ex-tremely lengthy and descriptive metaphors that are rarely seen in literature. As I said previously, Michael K is a work reminiscent of Kafka (even the character’s name is a reference to Josef K

of The Trial) and so the book is full of surreal, philosophical moments and situations that lend the book an extremely unique feel. Overall, Life and Times of Michael K is an extremely well-crafted and endlessly evocative experience from one of the most critically acclaimed authors of

ALBUM

The Velvet Underground- White Light White Heat (1968)With the recent passing of one of rock’s true innovators, Lou Reed, it seems fitting to cover what is prob-ably his most daring and experimental album (with the exception of Metal Machine Music of course). For those who listened to the band’s debut, did you like European Son? Because if you did you’ll like this album. On their first album the band creates huge variations in tone and style from track to track. The soft and subtle Sunday Morning was followed by the fast and cacoph-onic I’m Waiting for my Man and after that was Femme Fatale. Their next few albums didn’t share this, White Light White Heat is constant cacophony and their follow up in 1969 was the com-plete opposite. The only exception to this rule is the short ‘Here she Comes Now’ which is one of the album’s biggest surprises, soft and utterly beautiful. The band expands on the ex-perimental nature of their debut with heavy use of distortion, lengthy jams and spoken word sections. In regards

to these spoken word sections we have The Gift. A surreal eight minute story told by John Cale over a bed of squeal-ing instrumentation. The opening song is glorious; completely embodying what is so fantastic about the album in just over two minutes and is probably the best song on it. The album’s most famous or infamous work is undoubt-edly the 17 minute closer Sister Ray. It really is as far as you could possibly get from the short accessible opener; Cale hooked an organ up to a dis-torted guitar amp and creates a sound completely unparalleled in rock music. In the words of Lou Reed about Sister Ray: ‘I wrote about this scene of total debauchery and decay. I like to think of “Sister Ray” as a transvestite smack dealer’. ‘I Heard her Call My Name’ opens side two and is an absolute romp and actually catchy, remove all the extreme noise, distortion and Lou Reed and you could probably play it at a party. Every song on the album is up to the quality described above, it’s both varied while still being extremely consistent. Overall, White Light White Heat is an exhilarating, surreal and comedic adventure by this great band and will be remembered as one of rock’s greatest anomalies.

Sunday’s solar eclipse may be thought of as a sophisticated New Moon and projects begun soon after have great impact. That’s true of ideas - though perhaps at a different pace. Bearing in mind Mercury’s retrograde status, it may be that these aren’t fully launched until position next May.

Sunday’s solar eclipse is followed, midweek, by an alignment of the Sun and Saturn. In his role as ‘cosmic head-master’, Saturn requires good performance and the delivery of your best-ever homework. Yet that does depend on the teacher. It may be time to find a new guide.

Sunday’s solar eclipse is, within days, followed by an alignment with Saturn. Recall that your ruling planet, Mercury is retrograde. It may be that there has been some misunderstanding and that you are called to account midweek.

A solar eclipse (Sunday) is a special kind of New Moon. As with any lunation it takes a few days before the Moon is actually seen. This week, just as the silvery Moon appears once more, the Sun aligns with Saturn. For you this could bring a stop-and-think moment.

Sunday’s Scorpio solar eclipse highlights the very base of your solar chart and the high probability of you laying foundations for the next whole Saturn cycle (approx. three decades). Whether you’re doing up on old house, opening a fresh career path or forming a partnership.

Mars, the energiser, continues to work its way through your sign. Despite this, energy levels might not be very high until a few days after Sunday’s solar eclipse. You could view this as recharging time when you monitor what’s going on around.

Venus (your ruling planet) arrives at the base of your solar chart and by mid-month aligns with Pluto. This change of planetary gear, coupled with Sunday’s solar eclipse (think fresh starts) and the Sun’s alignment with Saturn shortly afterwards suggests you may be preparing to make a large investment.

Sunday’s solar eclipse in your sign is unusual in that just a few days later, the Sun aligns with Saturn - also moving through your sign. This suggests you may have reached a plateau: though perhaps through physical or financial - or even family obligation -feel limited.

Having made a decision and, perhaps, confronted a fear, it may be time to recharge your batteries. Your ruling planet, Jupiter arrives at a station on Thursday. For a few days after this, it might suit you to have down-time and to reflect on all that’s happened since late June.

Sunday’s New Moon is also a Solar Eclipse followed, a couple of days later, by the Sun’s annual meeting with Saturn, your ruling planet. It would be understandable if you were to identify new goals and ambitions. You may also find that you have increased status within the family.

Sunday’s solar eclipse puts focus on both career and property. If changes haven’t happened here yet (and much depends on your actual birthdate), then this coming week could bring the first hint of a timeline for develop-ment.

This is an important week - and not just because of Sunday’s solar eclipse in another of the Water signs (Scorpio). This marks the start of a significant new phase for everyone. In your case though, it’s Jupiter’s station on Thursday that could have even greater impact.

Next Sunday on the 10th of November our city will be holding the Kilkenny Diecast Model Toy Show.

The event will take place at The Hub at Cíllin Hill and feature an incredible collection of fifty different model displays including train sets, model construction quarry dioramas, and a large range of model trucks to name just

a few. The event will be in support of Enable Ireland and Beat FM will be broadcasting at the event.

This is its third time in Kilkenny and its huge success in previous years has led it to being expanded greatly for 2013. The Kilkenny Diecast Model Toy Show is a fantastic event for our city and should definitely be looked into.

Pub- What is there that can really be said about Tynan’s? In the words of an online review for this pub: ‘Atmosphere, Guinness, Service, Cleanliness, Price, Craic’.

Well what else is necessary once you’ve ticked those boxes? Amazing that’s not all the pub has to offer, on top of this we get live bands and

the pub has some of the best live acts in the county. Everyone has their own story about gigs in Tynan’s and are never disappointed with the experience.

Famed for its ability to turn a quick drink into a night out, the pub’s extremely friendly staff and clientele will have you coming back again and again and again.

The Returned is a French television series that aired its first sea-son last year and is set to start again in early 2014.

The show is about a small mountain town where people who had been dead suddenly reappear seemingly unscathed. Those who return include a victim of a road accident, a suicidal bridegroom, a small child killed by burglars and a serial

killer. While they are trying

to resume their lives a whole host of strange phenomena begin to occur such as power outages and strange marks appearing on those both living and undead.

The series has received phenomenal reviews both inside and outside of France and should definitely be seen before the show’s return next year.

Pub of the week

Before MidnightThe term ‘romantic drama film’ doesn’t roll off the tongue very well, though this could be possibly be due to the fact we’re so used to the former word being paired up with ‘comedy’ that anything else doesn’t sound

right. Before Midnight seems to be a film that has completely flown under the radar.

The film garnered a 94 on metacritic, a 98 on rotten tomatoes and an 8.2 on imdb and is the finale of a trilogy spanning 20 years. And yet of all the people that I’ve talked to at least,

none have any idea that it even exists.

I suppose it comes down to genre really, though the film certainly has its humour, it is used to compli-ment the plot as opposed to in the vast majority of ro-mantic comedies where the plot supports the humour. Probably worth watching.

I was not planning to read this book. I recall watching an interview with the legendary Smiths frontman a few years ago and if I had been English I would have called the man an absolute ponce.

Sadly I couldn’t resist the temptation any longer and thankfully

the book supplies practically everything you would expect from Morrissey.

You get flowery prose that even rhymes, the second line of the book is ‘Streets that define you and streets that confine you, with no sign of motorway, freeway or highway’

so you could probably stick on ‘Heaven knows I’m Miserable Now’ then pick up the book and read to the songs rhythm.

You also get his classic sense of humour and the cover is nice so if you’re a fan of The Smiths you’ll probably enjoy this book.

Spotify is a modern success story, a completely legal music streaming website which fantastic functionality and a myriad of labels attached to it such as EMI, Sony, Warners and Universal. As of December 2012 the website had 20 million

users. For those who don’t

know, the website allows you to stream any song or album held by these labels or by practically any independent or local one for an extremely low cost.

When you register for an account you are

given a six month trial of the website, after that you either pay €5 a month or continue with the website but with the presence of ads. The app on its own is free and for those who haven’t you should definitely try spotify. It is a very, very good deal.

This is a film that, previous to seeing it, I was extremely sceptical about. As some will know, Blockbusters are generally released in Summer and talkies in the Winter in time for the Oscars.

Generally if a film is released off season then it’s a telling sign that the movie isn’t great but thank-fully this is not the case here, not by any means. Scepticism is uncalled for with these films,

after all The Avengers, one of the best blockbusters in years, came out in April of last year which is about as far from the start of Summer as we are from the end of it now.

I’m quite certain at this point that the people behind these films wouldn’t put out a product that wasn’t excellent so you should definitely go see Thor: The Dark World.

Frances Black is an Irish singer who came to prominence in the late 1980’s playing with her family’s band The Black Family. She plays a mix of contemporary and modern Irish music.

Over the course of her career she has recorded seven studio album, two best-of albums and has been a constant in the Irish music world

throughout.She has toured the

world many times after starting her solo career in the early 90’s. Next Saturday will see her playing at Kilkenny’s newest music venue, the Stoneyford Community Centre. Tickets will be €22 and it will start at 8pm, she is certainly worth seeing.

Three years after 2010’s pretty awful album, Recovery, Eminem is back with his sequel to 2000’s Marshall Mathers LP, and it’s good! More than that it’s actually pretty fantastic. The Marshal Mathers LP 2 is easily the man’s best album since 2002’s The Eminem Show.

Singles Rap God and Berserk now seem like an attempt to curb enthusiasm for the album as their easily some of the album’s worst songs.

With Headlight Eminem proves that he still has topics to rap about and is one of the best songs he’s ever made, Love Game really captures the pure fun of his first few singles with a fantastic verse from Kendrick Lamar, and Rhyme or Reason along with others really captures the idea of Psychedelic Hip Hop that people have been wanting for years now. It’s an ex-tremely accomplished new album by Eminem.

Batman Arkham Asylum took the entire gaming world by surprise when it first came out back in 2009.

The game was expected to be, as most license games are, a cheap and poorly designed throwaway product that was expected to sell purely because of

the name Batman. Instead we received a fantastic stealth action game with some great writing com-ing from people who had written for the character in print.

2011 then saw Batman Arkham City, an open world experience just as strong as or stronger than its predecessor. To be hon-

est Origins is the worst of the three but not by much, it’s still a great experience

and certainly better than the other big game coming out this week.

Juniors Golfing YearWhat a year it has been for the

junior section of our club. The action packed year began back in April with competitive golf and ran the season through. Ian St John became our teaching professional and proved a marvellous asset putting the young golfers through the basics of the game. When the major competitions came around one young man dominated the honours list. Robert Kerwick played superbly to capture the Kinshella Trophy (donated by 2013 President John Kinshella and his two grandsons Dylan and Luke) and compiled 40points to sweep the honours.

Robert then went a step further when he came good on Junior Captains Day (it was Davy Walzer and Aoife Donnelly who celebrated their Captains Prizes) when he completed a famous double with another 40 point total. Robert is an exceptional talent and enjoyed his days but he is not alone as a golfer of great potential. Blade O Gorman took the Golfer of the Year award after a string of scoring which marks him as a player for the future. Eoghan Scriven and Therese Donnelly took the most improved improved golfers awards.

The highlight of the year is the Summer Camp which this year attracted over 40 participants. There were two days in Mount Juliet to the putting green aswell as a trip to Lacken for a round of pitch and putt while the final

Saturday 23rd November RACE MEETING

day was in Callan when the young people had coaching from Jennifer from Junior Golf Ireland and a barbeque capping off a wonderful week.

The most enjoyable part of the week is the role played by the more senior young members as they volunteer to help out with the organisation of the year. Joe Cuddihy and Liz Cashin are the junior conveynors and do a wonderful job organising the junior calendar.

There are many who also help to make the junior section such a success as it goes from strength to strength and hopefully next year will be as enjoyable a one for the young people of Callan Golf Club as the one that has just ended.
