The United States is the 4th Indonesia’s biggest trading partner after Japan, China and Singapore with a trade value reaching USD 27.27 billion in 2011. Indonesia and US total trade in 2014 reached a value of US$27.7 billion. The two countries believe that this number does not reflect the full potential given the size of Indonesia’ and the US’ size markets. This is why the two countries are committed to increase its government to government and business to business relations. To promote the growth of the bilateral relations in the field of economics, trade, and investment, both countries established the Trade and Investment Council (TIC) to discuss and resolve trade and investments issues of the two countries. TIC consists of four Working Groups, which is WG on Industrial and Agricultural Prod-ucts, WG on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade, WG on Intellectual Property Rights and WG on Investment.

In bilateral trade cooperation, since 1998, Indonesia and the US have had “TIFA” (Trade and Investment Framework Agreement). TIFA serves as a forum to discuss issues related to trade and investment between the two countries. Under TIFA, delegations from Indonesia and the U.S. meet annually at senior official and/or Cabinet levels. The Indonesia-US TIFA has four Working Groups (WG), i.e. WG on Industrial and Agricultural Products; WG on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade; WG on Intellectual Property Rights; and WG on Investment. After the U.S.-Indonesia Comprehensive Partnership was announced 2010, the result of TIFA meetings have been shared and reported to the US and Indonesia’s Joint Commission Meeting, co-chaired by both Indonesia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the U.S. Secretary of State.

While in investment, US is Indonesia’s seventh largest investor in Q2 2016 with the total amount of 347.35 million USD and consists of 196 projects. In 2010 there was an agreement between Indonesia and US (ISA-OPIC) regard-ing investment protection that will attract more US investment toward Indonesia. It shows that Indonesia gained more trust from other US companies and with the growing cooperation between Indonesia and the US, the trade between these two countries will keep increasing every year.

During the G20 Summit which was held on July 8, 2017 in Germany, both countries’ Presidents met on the sidelines of the summit. The United States through its President Donald J. Trump signaled more trade between the US and Indonesia by saying that the US are going to do a lot of business compared to the previous economic relations. During the meeting, the two presidents agreed to promote mutually beneficial bilateral trade.

According to the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), the US posted a $13.2 billion trade deficit with Indonesia in 2016. Meanwhile, Indonesia’s Trade Ministry recorded a $8.8 billion trade surplus with the United States in the same period.

Regarding Donald Trump’s protectionism in prioritizing U.S.’s economic interests, trade between Indonesia and the


U.S. has the potential to be obstructed in the future. According to the USTR, Indonesia has implemented a wide array of trade and investment barriers that trigger serious negative effects on U.S. commerce. USTR is launching a self-initiated Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) eligibility review of Indonesia based on concerns related to its compliance with the GSP market access criterion and related to its compliance with the GSP services and investment criterion. Additionally, the Ministry of Trade of the Republic of Indonesia also recorded $ 9.6 billion trade surplus to Indonesia. Hence, there is high-tendency, where the U.S. will draw out the GSP program from Indonesia, where Indonesia will receive increased tariff of around 10-25% on exports to the U.S. The Indonesian government is proactively concerned regarding this issue, by maximizing the role of Ambassadors to maintain the GSP program with the U.S. and to open new market accesses, based on their host countries.

Currently, in 2019, after 70 years of fruitful diplomatic cooperation, the US and Indonesia’s relations is stronger than ever. To enliven the 70th Anniversary of RI-US bilateral relations, a number of activities in Indonesia and the US have been planned, each of which will be carried out by Indonesian Representatives in the US and US representatives in Indonesia. Activities in Indonesia and the US will be carried out in several cities, in collaboration with various universities , business chambers and local governments. All of these activities are aimed to build and strengthen relations between the two countries even more, to further embrace and educate the public, and to strengthen the foundation of RI-US cooperation for future generations.

Prasetyo’s last assignment was as a Senior Expert Staff to the Ministry of National Development Planning / National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) of the Republic of Indonesia. In this role he has been asked to assume the position of Chief Operating Officer of the PINA Center for Private Investment of The Ministry of National Development Planning / National Development Planning Agency of the Republic of Indonesia. This new special unit, under the Ministry, is tasked with the sourcing of equity financing and providing facilitation between investees and investors of infrastructure and non-infrastructure projects. Preparing investees to become feasible, bankable and ready to be invested in, identifying and negotiating with investors both domestic and foreign as well as conducting monitoring and debottlenecking functions are among the main duties of the PINA Center for Private Investment.

Prasetyo received his S.H. or Bachelor of Laws from the Faculty of Law, University of Indonesia and attended Postgraduate Studies at the Faculty of Law, University of Padjadjaran, Bandung.

Shinta has worked tirelessly to advance technology in the region since founding Bubu.com and serving as the company’s CEO, a position she still holds. Her first company, Bubu.com started as a web development company that later evolved into a full-service data-driven digital agency. This year Bubu also launched Bubu Gaming, a full-service gaming and esports agency, backed by 23+ years of experience in digital and by individuals who have more than 10 years in Esport industry. Helping brands to perform with better ROI, possessing unrivalled experience and understanding of the industry.

In 2009, Shinta was approached by TELKOM Indonesia to become the CEO of Plasa.com (now Blanja.com), a Telkom Indonesia owned e-commerce marketplace. Plasa.com attracted investments from eBay in 2012 in a joint venture between the two companies aimed to create a marketplace that connects hundreds of millions of merchants to customers both locally and globally. The desirability of the platform Shinta built during her tenure at Plasa.com, demonstrates both her experience in the digital sphere and her visionary approach to e-commerce.

After her role in Plasa.com, Shinta went on to become one of the Managing Partner at Nusantara Ventures, a pioneering technology venture capital fund in Indonesia aimed at helping entrepreneurs create and grow market-leading digital media companies throughout the region from 2011 until 2013. As one of Indonesia’s leading authorities on ICT, Shinta has also been instrumental in fostering valuable ties with Silicon Valley. She co-founded Silicon Valley Asia Technology Alliance, a non-profit organization (incorporated in 2014) whose mission is to bridge the flow of ideas and collaboration between the tech industry in Indonesia and Silicon Valley. She also initiated Angel EQ Network, a premier angel investor network that was established in October 2015 - 2017 and founded by fifteen founding members with the goal to boost the Indonesian entrepreneurial ecosystem through education, active engagement and funding. This innitiative is now thru the innitiative startup Indonesia

Last September 13-14, 2019, Shinta spearheaded a succesful esports tournament called BUBU ESPORTS TOURNAMENT, which featured both Men and Women PUBG Mobile Tournament. This tournament has given Indonesian women in esports a new platform to compete with equal prize pool and treatment as the men, which is unheard of even for the region. Shinta is currently the Head of permanent committee for Digital Business, e-Commerce and Startups Development at Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Indonesia (KADIN). For the past four years, she is also in the Board of Trustees of The Nature of Conservancy (TNC Indonesia)

Ratu Silvy Gayatri was born in Jakarta on September 24, 1962. She is currently the Secretary of the Directorate General of American and European Affairs at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry since January 2018 with a title of Minister in Diplomatic rank.

She joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1988 and was most recently assigned as the Indonesian Consul General in Guangzhou, China (2014-17). Her various other posts have included as Secretary of the Directorate-General of Asia-Pacific and African Affairs (2011-14) and as Counsellor for Economic affairs at the Indonesian Embassy in Canberra, Australia (2006-10).

She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wien in Austria and a Masters in Diplomacy from the University of Birmingham. She also holds a Bachelors Degree in International Relations from the University of Padjajaran, Bandung.

Ratu Silvy Gayatri is married to Mr. Susanto Prio Utomo and they are blessed with two children: Gatra Priyandita (born 1994) and Gatri Agatha Priandini (born 1999).

Tony Wenas currently serves as President Director of PT Freeport Indonesia, one of the largest Copper & Gold mine in the world. Prior to this from 2015 - 2017, he served as the President Director of PT Riau Andalan Pulp and Paper (RAPP), and Managing Director of APRIL Indonesia, of which he was also the President Commissioner in 2011–2012; RAPP/APRIL is one of the largest Pulp & Paper producer in the world. Mr. Wenas has held several top executive positions in major mining companies, including CEO of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk, President of PT Berkat Resources Indonesia and Country Head of Intrepid Mines Ltd.

Mr. Wenas is also the Secretary General of Indonesian Mining Association, Chairman of Permanent Committee for Europe at Indonesia Chamber of Commerce & Industry (KADIN); a Member of the Board of Advisory at The Nature Conservancy Indonesia (TNC); as well as Chairman of Indonesian Business Council for Sustainable Development (IBCSD), a member of WBCSD.

Angga Hafiiz is currently the Deputy Director of the Indonesia Investment Promotion Center (IIPC), the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board/BKPM representative office in New York. Prior to working in the United States, he served on the staff of the Chairman of BKPM and as an Investment Marketing Executive for Asia at the Indonesia Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM). Before joining BKPM, he served as a Planner at the Indonesia National Housing and Urban Development Corporation and as Assistant Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian National Commission at UNESCO.

He holds a Masters Degree in Urban Management and Policies from Ecole Nationale des Travaux Publics de l’Etat (ENTPE) of France and a Bachelors Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Indonesia.

Bonar Simeon [email protected] Simeon Bintang was born in Sibolga, North Sumatera, on January 3rd, 1994. Currently he is the Desk Officer of the US – Indonesia Bilateral Affairs under the Directorate of American Affairs I, Directorate General of American and European Affairs at the Indonesian Foreign Ministry since January 2018 with a title of Attaché in Diplomatic rank. He works mostly on political, security and defense affairs between Indonesia and United States.

After graduated a Bachelors Degree majoring in Law and Legal Studies from University of Padjajaran Bandung in 2016, he took a career as a junior associate lawyer by joining a boutique law firm, Rosetini & Partners in association with Nishimura Asahi Japan, in 2017. Afterwards, he shifted his career to be a professional diplomat by joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2018. Prior to his incumbent position as a Desk Officer of Indonesia – US bilateral affairs, he was assigned as a junior research assistant for East Asia and Pacific affairs under the Policy Analysis and Development Agency of the Ministry in 2018, focusing mainly on the development of Indonesia’s Indo-Pacific’s policy.

Bonar Simeon Bintang finished his Junior Diplomatic Training of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2018 and accomplished a short training in international relations at the Clingendael Institute of International Relations, Netherland, in 2019.

Maulana has co-founded Kravasia.com, a tech-enabled marketplace for Indonesia handmade products which enabled thousands of artisans across Java island. He was also in the founding team of Ruangguru.com, an award-winning tech-enabled education provider in Indonesia - serving over 15 million students and workers across the nation, where he was responsible for product development and managed the fund during the seeding and series A investment stage. He received his B.Sc. in Economics from the University of Indonesia where he was awarded an Outstanding Delegate in the Nusantara Model United Nations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 2012. He was also chosen as the University Delegate in the Harvard Project for International Economic Relations & Trade Council. In 2019, he completed his M.S. (Summa Cum Laude) in Technology Management from Columbia University in New York.

The first experience in Renewable Energy started in August 2012 when was assigned as the Medco Director in charge to solve the outstanding approval of Sarulla Geothermal Project in North Sumatera, the largest geothermal power plant project worldwide with 3 x 110 MW of around USD 1.6 billion investment (note: which was 7 years got stuck). The approvals from the Government of Indonesia and also PLN & PGE (Pertamina Geothermal Energy) for both Joint Operating Contract & Energy Sales Contract was obtained within 7 months assignment, then followed by the finalization of Financial Closing within a couple of months. After that, Sarulla project was then inaugurated for the operational execution in August 2013. All plants are now operated as they’re COD’s within 2017-2018. This geothermal project operated by Sarulla Operations Limited (owned by Medco Energy, Itochu, Kyushu & Ormat) with lenders of JBIC, ADB and several banks (with estimate total loan USD 1.2 billion).

Since April 2015, established own consulting business and hold advisory works for energy projects (oil & gas, geothermal and other renewable energy projects such waste to energy, wind energy, solar cell, mini-hydro etc.) in a few companies (Kaltimex Energy, Windlife Green Indonesia, Amco Bersaudara Indonesia, Haka Buton Energy)

Active in Kadin Indonesia (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce & Industry) to establish new division, called Renewable Energy and Environment since November 2015 as Head of Permanent Committee in Geothermal & Waste to Energy.
