a sacred site in the far north. To me this is about exploring the pre-Christian era (paganism) of early England (before it was even a nation). Gain a better understanding of the ancients. I think one of the big aspects of this project I want to create is atmosphere. Another would be Old English being spoken instead of Modern English but I’ll have to see about using it. My progress of work has been good but difficult to proceed with.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words) MINIMUM 180 MAXIMUM 220The concept is set around a young man named Asc who tells us around a campfire of his story of his pilgrimage to a sacred site in the far north of England as well his encounters he faced. My aim is toexplore and understand the pagan path of our ancestors; regain an interest in our long forgotten pastand the world around us. The sole influences are my love for Dark Ages Europe andpaganism/mythology. Some of the elements that I may add is epic poetry (found in classics like Beowulf) to give the story a bit of spice and conflict. I will research the perspective and culture of 6th century England. I will also research the people that lived in the ancient world and how they understood where they livedand themselves. My target audience will be folk who have the same interests as I do, that beingAnglo-Saxon history, and paganism. I plan to play Asc, sitting around the campfire (whether day or night) and telling the stories to the audience while looking at the screen. I also have my soft kit that I willhopefully use as well, maybe borrow some too. All I would need is a camera (which I own one), a tripodand possibly a microphone for speaking.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 50 words) MINIMUM 45 MAXIMUM 55I will evaluate my production through the means of diary and photos. I would write down a basic idea and through each week add to it or replace it with something new. I would want this written down either on paper, Word or even discuss with the tutor.

Proposed Research Sources and Bibliography (Harvard Format)For my harvard referencing I will use mostly books as that will be the main source for the research into my project. I will also use web pages for referencing since the internet is another big form of research for me.

CHAPTER 1

Introduction

Write an introduction to this Chapter - This opening section’s main function is simply to get the reader into the chapter somewhat gradually rather than jumping directly into the first section. It can be as brief as one paragraph; it can be as long as three or more pages. If you prefer a briefer introduction, then begin with a paragraph something like this:

“This project portfolio (Unit 8) is an account of my Extended Project for my first-year UAL Diploma in Creative Media – Level 3 Film & TV. The project is a short film about a young man by the name of Asc in 6th century England who tells his story to us (the audience) of his pilgrimage to a sacred site in the north. The story will hopefully be told in Old English, in poetic verse. The scenery will hopefully be set in a forest at night time (may need to see about that). The aim of this project is to create an atmosphere, bring back the audience to a time long forgotten.”

The Background of my Project This section is intended to provide a context for your project. It answers this question:

“What special factors were at work that might have influenced the conceptualisation and execution of your project?”

It was something of my interest which has been for a long time now, and I’ve touched upon in my previous academic work like the ‘Who Am I’ project as well my trimester 3 work from Level 2. I never really had any personal experiences that affect my choice of project, since it has been of interest for so long. Hopefully this will express my fascinations to people I know to a higher degree. The idea of my project is to explore the themes of paganism and flesh out atmosphere. I seek to tell a story through the eyes of a man that lived over 1400 years ago, and tell us what he saw and experienced and it is to show the audience what life was like back then, travel back in time. My project relates to the target audience because it the audience would need an interest in history.

What did I learn on my course?

Skills TimelineSemiology (Chapter 2, Unit 4)I think I first learned semiology this year. Semiology is the study of signs and symbols, translate meaning through abstract means into film. Many reasons for this could be to express a message to the audience, or maybe something more. I am intrigued by the concept of symbols and signs in fiction and non-fiction, for it could show a pattern, mythology, hints to what is about to happen in the story or even what has happened before. We were shown by Jenni the show Skins, which straight away in the first scene we were struck with semiology. The bit with Tony’s bedroom; clean, tidy, well placed. Sid’s however, children’s mattress, messy, uncared for.

White Balance (Chapter 3, Unit 1 & 2)White balance was something I never heard of before this year. White balance sets out to balance the lighting and colouring of the shot, whether imagery or footage. Since I discovered this tool, it has open many new doors to how I can alter my camera’s settings to what lighting I desire. I was with a group and tested out white balance in different areas with different modes. The result? Depending on where you are, different modes suit better in different areas, like shooting with the shade mode works best in the indoors facing out, if that makes sense (inside while the outdoor light is coming in through windows).

Screen Motion (Chapter 1)Screen Motion describes the movement on screen, this including characters, environment and even the props. It is the very first thing our eyes try to see when watching a film on the silver screen. The characters (meaning something that is living e.g. human) are the most obvious ones. I never really noticed screen motion until Term 2. It is an interesting subject because it’s the most grasping thing you would expect to see on the screen yet you don’t think about it!

Visual & Audio Problems (Chapter 2)The task of Visual and Audio problems was one I struggled to understand for a while (probably due to the wording of ‘problems’), in the end I found out it was searching for the research the production team would have needed to achieve accuracy. I had to search for specific things that would have been used in the scene I chose (the 1973 office in Life on Mars), like clothing, antiques and hairstyles.

In the time of war and conflict, deep in a wald of 6th century southern England, a young man named Asc waits to tell the next person his stories of the encounters he faced during his journey to a sacred place far away. Asc is a man who considers himself a bridge between the world of Middle Earth (our world) and the one of the gods, and his songs are the tales he tells us. My film is about a man whose encounters reveal the nature of the world he lives in and how he perceives life. What Asc discovers on the way is something he has never encountered before.

I am to be the writer, director, producer, composer and actor in this film.

Why my project is important?

Describe this in general sense as a statement of why you wanted to do the project. For example, as a desire to improve something or a desire to understand something, to entertain, inform, educate, to develop skills and knowledge in given media industry context,

etc.

I wanted to do this project because I wanted to share my understanding of the world of the ancients and express that desire of my love for history to everyone. I wanted to reuse the Old English language (which I used in my Trimester 3 product in Level 2) to enhance the atmosphere within my film as well historical accuracy. This will hopefully not just enhance the atmosphere but also the viewing experience. It’s also an expression of myself to the world, what I feel and understand, not just what people of 6th century England felt and thought.

CHAPTER 2

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter

Books, web pages, fellow enthusiasts/first hand sources, documentaries and even previous work will be the research basis of my work to then be influenced into my final project as well my role of sole actor, writer, producer and director will be incorporated.

Chapter 2 will show the research sources I will use during my pre-production, how I will use them, and hopefully express that research in the film. First, I will tell each and every piece of research in detail and how and what purpose it shall have. Secondly, I will discuss what the protagonist’s story is and how it will be presented and whether I want it to be at night or during the day. I will finally then discuss about the more technical side of the project, about shot directions and the visuals as well audio.

Here is some guidance for the structure and completion of this chapter.

Tell the reader what you have learnt from previous work/literature/resources and how you position yourself in relation to previous work in chosen discipline/theme/topic/interest, within which your project is located.

Provide evidence that you are well informed.

Answer questions (What? Why? /How? /Look for specific problems and issues (theoretical and practical)/how media product communicates with the audiences/background of the artist and the project).

Literature Review

How do you create a historical film that is authentic?

There is the short answer, which is research everything about the period, from clothing to language, culture, religion etc. However, this isn’t a question that can be so easily answered. The authenticity needs to be checked and monitored throughout the entire pre-production and production process in order to succeed. Authenticity is something I want to fully achieve, and with my knowledge of 6th century Anglo-Saxon England I believe I can make this work. I have multiple arrays of books and acquaintances to help me. I already have basic soft kit to give me a head start. I would also need to ask for some help with the language, since my skills in Old English isn’t the best, and thankfully I have some good contacts for possibly translating the dialogue needed for my project.

Authenticity is something that filmmakers of a period drama or historical epic MUST be mandatory to an extent, otherwise it would cause upsetting of many historical fanatics. However, sometimes authenticity costs money and time as well viewings. If we are to be realistic though, I’m not aiming for a wide audience, so it’s fine to make it authentic as possible. In my opinion, I’d rather achieve historical accuracy over big budget dramas, no matter how difficult it will be.

How can the film be atmospheric?

Atmosphere in film is a fairly hard impression to achieve, the level of atmosphere is even more difficult to accomplish. What I would need to do to achieve atmosphere is depending on the angles of the camera shots, the colouring/saturation, the costume design, and the most important one that is known as sound. To me, sound just brings the atmosphere to life more than anything else, whether it’s in a lively pub ram packed with people, the peaceful silence of a church, the crashing waves of a stormy beach or even the eerie whistles and creaks of the cemetery. Music is also a big player in creating atmosphere.

Media Product Review

In this section you need to examine and explore existing media products, media practices and ideas in the spirit of creativity and imagination. Identify different media projects related to your media project. Record and analyse findings.

What are similar media products and how is my work related to them? (position yourself and your project in relation to similar media products)

There isn’t many films like mine, though the closest I could think of is Vikings (2013) and Apocalypto (2006). Reason being is not just due to solely being historical, but they also share certain themes I would like to plant into my project, that being dialogue entirely in a dead language (Apocalypto) and darker themes (Vikings). The atmosphere of both works that I have mentioned are very different from each other, but yet they share the same mature approach, despite one being set in Latin America before the arrival of Christopher Columbus and the other during the Dark Ages. My project may not be as dark or epic as these two, but I will try to incorporate them in through small influence.

How have similar media products influenced my project? Not so much in truth, my project will be mostly influenced by my own interests, the theme behind the film. Mostly for visual work, since I am not the best with visually pleasing material. There is one thing that has influenced me a lot is the usage of the native, historically accurate language of the time, with this project that being Old English.

How have they shaped my project? They have shaped my product through means of artistic direction, mature themes (the feeling/atmosphere, no violence, sex, language, drugs etc.), historical attraction (despite being totally inaccurate according to historians and scholars), and my favourite, the plot.

What did I learn from similar media products? (compare similar media products, how it influenced your perspective and ideas for the project)

I learnt from the fact that I am impressed with the previously mentioned films but I prefer to go down my own path while taking in influence from the elements at the same time. This meaning I enjoy Apocalypto and Vikings for their aesthetics and the usage of the dead languages (Apo: Mayan, Vik: Old Norse, Old English), but I want to take these influences and mash it in within my own direction.

Health and Safety – risk assessmentIf used, fire is one to be most concerned with, since fire can be uncontrollable. The other thing to think of is weather, weather like fire can be unpredictable and can outright cease the project or at least delay it. Conditions with the chosen environment is also to be taken with caution in case equipment or my own kit gets damaged with mud, puddles etc.

Detailed Analysis of Target AudiencesThe target audience would need to have an interest in ancient history, especially Dark Ages Britain. The target audience would also need to handle dialogue that not in Modern English, in this case Old English. Dark(ish) atmospheric themes would also be something of an interest to those that have the taste.

Legal and ethical requirementsThere is nothing to suggest that I will do anything to cross the boundaries of legal and ethical requirements. Only thing I can think of is trespassing on private land, regardless of requesting permission or not.

Detail the Design/Style/Form/Genre/Aesthetics of your projectIf I were to describe the genre or style of the project, it would probably be Historical Period Drama, but without much of physical drama so to speak.

The skills and techniques I will need are patience, planning, locating and familiarity with technology e.g. camera, editing software etc.

My inspiration is my love for history, heritage and the natural landscape that surrounds us every day, even when we don’t realise it.

Contextualisation of my study – this is, “What was your motivation to do your project?” Refer to Chapter 1 and your Project Proposal to help you answer these questions.

My motivation for the project was that of my interests in Anglo-Saxon England. Nature also plays a big part in my work due to my fascination and spiritual connection with the natural world, but also my interests in paganism and the natural connection paganism (not the modern Wicca).

Research Design Strategies and Experimentation

Introduction

The introduction should be relatively brief, simply providing an overview of the chapter.

For example

“This chapter explains the research design for my Extended Project. It starts with research questions and follows by the description of the research design and research methods used in my project.”

This chapter is the ‘How-to’ section for the original research element of your Extended Project. In this chapter you must introduce and explain the design of your research and experimentation activities and how your information/data was collected.

Examples of the original research activities you may have conducted are: -

Experiments, exercises, workshops, interviews, focus groups, photography, observations, museums, galleries, drawing, filming, visual and audio surveys, character profiles, location surveys etc.

Content research, production research, people, locations, events, other materials i.e. props, costumes, scenery etc.

Research Questions Start with stating the intent of your Extended Project – what are you trying to

achieve? Outline the key characteristics of your project. Write about your overall research aim. Ask yourself: “What do I want to find out?”

You have to base your research design on your research questions Write clear research questions, detailing what you wanted to find out and why?

Each piece of resarch needs to have a question, before you can start. The research activity should be supportive and relevant to the type of information you are trying to find out.

Research Design

In this part of the chapter, you will expand on what you wrote in your project proposal. Write about what you researched and how you collected your information/data (research activities).

Remember, in this chapter, you will only write what you have researched and what research activities you used. In the next chapter, you will write about your findings, analysis and conclusions (2.2).

Detailed below are possible methods you are could use for your research. This will be the research activities you have conducted. The secondary research about your subject will be in your Literature Review. (Chapter 2)

This primary research is anything done by you, such as:- Online questionnaire – you could ask your Facebook friends to comment on your

project idea and give you some additional ideas how you can make it better. Get the feedback from your Lecturers and peers and reflect on it in relation to your

journey. You can contact companies, the council, artists, depending on what your project is

about to get their opinion on your project idea. You can use your phone or tablet to research, take photos of possible locations

and places that you can use in your project. Practical activities such as creating models, drawings, recording, filming, working in

CHAPTER 4

Writing and presenting my research findings

Introduction

In this chapter, you will summarise the information and data that you collected and detail your analysis of your research. You should start this paragraph by briefly restating the topic/theme of your project (take it from Chapter 1).

Explain the object of each question, research activity, point out results, and present those results in a chosen form of summarised information/data. Select method of presenting data carefully.

In a quantitative study, (questionnaires, surveys etc) the results usually begin with a description of the sample (e.g., sample size, description of participants who were excluded and why, handling of missing data) then you will detail your results, and analyise how that has informed your project.

In a qualitative study, the results often include many quotes from participants who were interviewed. Here you should also present your non-textual elements such as photos, videos, audio files, maps, tables, charts, mind maps, SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis, etc.

My Project

Introduction In this chapter you should present the level of self-direction, personal initiative and commitment necessary to progress ideas and find solutions, and the practical, theoretical and technical comprehension, appreciation, knowledge and proficiency necessary to achieve identified goals. The ability to plan and organise work within a given timeframe and the efficient production of outcomes both individually and collaboratively.

Pre-Production

Produce Pre-Production Portfolio, which will formally define your project (location survey; risk assessment; treatment; script; budget; schedule, character bibles, design documents etc depending on your project.)

Identify your role - directing (managing the team) crew, actors, games designer, concept artist, foley artist, sound design, model maker, camera, yourself etc depending on your project

Collaborating and working as a team – do not worry if you are working on your own!

Dealing with production problems (delays, equipment breakdowns, changes in schedule, etc)

Use of visual, audio and interactive media skills to complete your media project Pitch your proposal to the production board (video recording of your production

board presentation) Analyse your target audience. Investigate the target demographic and record the

type of media or entertainment they consume

Production Management techniques, (notes of team meetings, or daily diary reflections if
