Artist Info: Lesley Ingham ~ I have always loved art. I have always loved creating, and I have always loved pretty things, but I had never experienced the kind of inspiration that I have now with my two precious children: Allison (3), and Kahlon (1 1/2). From the moment I knew I was expecting Alli, I began thinking of beautiful theme ideas for her nursery... and we ended up with a spring time type of theme, since her birthday is in April. Butterflies and bunnies in light pastels and sheer draperies is what I came up with. I beamed with joy each time I walked into her room! It turns out that her room matched her - light and blonde-headed, and pretty!

“Happy Rooms For Happy Kids!”

You can stay up all night baking birthday cupcakes foryour child’s class and help him with his presentations, but nothing is as important as building a good workingrelationship with his teacher. “It’s the best gift you cangive your child,” says Doctor of Education Trudy Car-penter, director of special services for Ledyard publicschools in Connecticut.

Your child will thrive in school if you can create a “circleof support” that includes the three of you (your child, histeacher, and you), says Carpenter. The more freely in-formation flows back and forth between home andschool, the better your child will feel about learning.

The circle of support needs to be especially strong whenyour child first begins school, but it will remain impor-tant throughout his school years. Here are some waysto build and sustain good communication with your child’steacher:

Get to know the teacher right away. It’s best to talk tothe teacher before a problem surfaces. Although someteachers might want to wait until the first school-sched-uled conference to meet, try to arrange at least a quickconversation at the beginning of the year. Make it ca-sual; briefly introduce yourself and your child to theteacher and mention any special concerns. Let your childsee you speak with his teacher, or tell him that you did.Children feel safe when the important adults in their lives

How To Build A Good Relationship WithYour Child’s Elementary Teacher

parenting tips...work together.

Keep in regular touch. Useyour first meeting to cre-ate a plan for staying inregular contact throughoutthe year. Perhaps you canpass notes back and forthin a spiral notebook orblank journal each week;a brief comment or two willsuffice. If you choose a sys-tem such as this, involveyour child. Let him pick hisfavorite notebook, andgive him the responsibilityof carrying it between youand his teacher. If you’drather chat than write, askhis teacher when you mightcall or meet with her briefly, either before or after school.

Say thank you. Pass along compliments as well as sug-gestions and criticism. Everyone appreciates a kind word.If your child comes home bubbling over with how muchfun school was that day, let the teacher know. Thank herwhen she shows special sensitivity toward your child orpays him extra attention.

Stay involved with the class. Even if you work full time, you can still help. A small gesture goes a long way toshow you care. You could collect art supplies for a classproject and drop them off at school. You could also callparents about upcoming events. Your child’s teacher willappreciate your help and make note of your willingnessto be involved.

RTalk about school at home. Ask your child about schoolevery day. Questions such as “How was school?” aretoo vague. Try to ask specific questions, such as “Didyou start on your rain-forest project today?” or “Wereyou able to go outside at recess or was it too rainy?”Children are more likely to answer these questions andyou can use this information when talking with theteacher.

Be discreet but take action if problems arise. If you areangry with the teacher, take steps to address your feel-ings with her as soon as possible. Don’t criticize her infront of your child. He’s attached to both of you and iffeels he’s in the middle of your dispute, it could makehim anxious.

Respect the chain of command. If you have a seriousconcern about your child or the class, speak to theteacher first. Arrange a problem-solving or brainstorm-

ing meeting in whichyou and the teachertry to work out the is-sues. If you’re stillunhappy, let theteacher know thatyou want to continuethe discussion withher supervisor (if theteacher is the direc-tor of the school, you

may have to consider changing schools). By includingthe teacher in future discussions, you’re being respectfulof her relationship with your child.

Remember what PARENT stands for:Partner. Be there for your child and his teacher. Helpyour child prepare for school at home, and keep abreastof school events.

Advocate. Work for change in the classroom, school, and district. Attend school board and PTA meetings.Lobby to make a difference.

Resource. Help your child by providing his teacher withinformation about him. The more she knows about yourchild’s home life, the more she’ll be able to help himlearn.

Encourager. Support your child and his teacher. Believein them. Compliment jobs well done.

Negotiator. Be willing to talk. Be open to finding inno-vative solutions.

Team member. Do your share of the work. Teachers can’tfix everything themselves. A child’s education takes placeat home, too.

The MAAC (Martial Arts and Athletic Center) is the onlymixed martial arts program in Texas that is also a li-censed Child Care Facility. The MAAC offers an afterschool program that introduces Martial Art Education.

After School pick-up is a nice alternative to your kidsriding the bus home. This is something that the MAACoffers with their after school program. Martial Art Edu-cation offers many different disciplines for your childsuch as: Exercise, Self Defense, Self Control, Motiva-tion, Life and Social Skills, and Foremost.... RESPECT.“Every Child at some point should experience MartialArts” says Eric Braly. Eric has been under Master Listerfor 20 years now.

Master Lister knows andworks with Area SchoolPrincipals and encour-ages his kids to do welland excel in school. Be-haviorally as well as edu-cationally. He keeps aclose watch on all of thechildren’s progress andattitude throughout theschool year.

Lister has been workingin the school system forover 19 years now. He

feature article...The MAAC Attack...

teaches a Tae Kwon Do course as a P.E. credit at Ama-rillo High School every year. “The soul is healed by deal-ing with children” Lister says.

The MAAC excepts CCS and most of the children theyhave come from single parent homes. Master Lister andhis staff are excellent adult role models to have in yourchild’s life. They instill“old fashioned” valuesand teach disciplineand self control. Just60 minutes a day ofMartial Arts trainingwill make a big differ-ence in their lives.Training children inMartial Arts also helpsto keep them from get-ting into trouble atschool. They learn to direct their energy in a positivedirection.

Not only does the MAAC offer this excellent after schoolprogram but they also have a Youth Brazilian Jiu JitsuClass at 4:30pm Monday through Friday.

During the Summer they have Samurai Summer Camp. This time is dedicated and devoted to FUN! They go ona weekly field trips, Swimming, Palo Duro Canyon, MiniGolf. This past summer Master Lister took some of hisolder students that were well behaved and did well inschool to Schlitterbahn for a week!

So when you consider what to do with your child afterschool, don’t forget the MAAC and their amazing staff.Your child will feel like they have a second home there.3820 Line Avenue Amarillo, TX 79106. 806 322-1080.Email: [email protected] or [email protected]

PANHANDLE ASSESSMENT CENTERThe Panhandle Assessment Center opened it’s doors in Amarillo, Texas in March of 1990 and was the first and only facility of it’s kind in Amarillo and the Panhandle. The Panhandle Assessment Center (PAC) is an emer-gency shelter and child placing agency for neglected and abused children who have been placed into foster care. PAC operates 24 hours 7 days a week providing care for abandoned, homeless and abused children.

During 2005, Panhandle Assessment Center provided services to more than 300 young victims and their families in crisis situations throughout Amarillo, Lubbock and the surrounding communities of the Panhandle and South Plains. These children had been referred by law enforcement or Children’s Protective Services and other various government agencies all working together to comprehensively aid the abused child to prevent trauma and revictimization by the system.
