From the EDITORFor a long time the summer has been playing hide-and-seek, but has finally arrived. The summer is a time of sun, sea, holiday and simply fun, fun, fun.
It is also the time when we have to be aware of the underlying dangers. Do not forget the sunscreen and the hats! Skin cancer is a fact of life and should be avoided from an early age. In this time of holiday and travel, refer to article on holiday safety on page 19.
It is also the time we have to start planning “Back to School”. It sounds ludicrous, I know, but before you know it, the new school year is upon us. Utilize the opportunity to use the back toschoolitemsasstockingfillersundertheChristmastree.
Oupa en Ouma is ‘n integrale deel van ‘n kind se lewe. Op bl 15 sien ons die grootouers uit die oogpunt van die kind.
In this edition of Connecting Kidz we have tried to cover interesting topics that concern us all. Should you have a topic you would like to know more about, feel free to contact us on [email protected] or visit our Facebook page.
Texting and driving is dangerous and we should all be more aware. To find outmore read about it onpage 45 and visit www.textinganddrivingsafety.com
Our Christmas wish for you: that this season holds for you the hope, wonder, and amazement around every turn that you felt as a child.
Until next time, God Bless and drive safely. Nicky

By nature people are learning animals.Birds fly; fish swim; humans think and
learn. Therefore, we do not need to motivate children into learning by wheedling, bribing,

sure they are learning.

Oupas is mans-oumas en oumas is ma - mense.
Oupa is iemand nes ek, net biekie slimmer, want hy kan my help met
somme wat Pappa nie kan doen nie. Ouma sal dan al die lekker warm
beskuitaandraenjoubederfmetkoffieendandrukjydiebeskuitsodiep
indiekoffiebekersonnerdatjyraaskry.
Oupas slaap graag.
Dis so goed soos tien stories.

Giving your baby a variety of healthy food when they start eating solids, may prevent chronic disease and fussy eating later in life. Between 4-7 months, babies are most acceptable toward tastes and flavours; between 7-10 months to different textures.
Babies like the food they get used to. If you give them very salty or sweet food, theywillgetusedtothesetastesandarelikelytofindhealthierfoodbland in comparison.
Baby food in jars or packets can be handy, but they taste pretty similar and often have the same texture. This means that babies get used to food tasting the same. Limit babies from sucking on feeding pouches as these may stop them from using utensils and texture milestones may be missed.
The best food for babies is food that is homemade with no added sugar or salt. That way you know exactly what your baby iseating!Umatiecookshealthyandyummymealsforbabieswhentheyfirststartweaninguntil they jointherestofthefamily for meals. Success is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out. - Robert Collier
As a teacher, I see a lot of learners that is so talented with loads of potential, but they just don’t keep the pace. This is not because they are doing something wrong. It’s simply because they haven’t grasped the correct way of thinking and organising themselves according to their own individual needs. Not one child is the same. Therefore we can’t find a recipe that will work the same for twodifferent learners. Here at the CAMI Edu-Centre we have qualified personnelnetworking with Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Play Therapists and Psychologists. We assist learners that do Homeschooling in accordance with Brainline Learning World and also provide extra classes in most subjects. We make use of different learning techniques to adapt to eachchild’sspecificneeds, forexampleCAMIEducationalComputerProgram, worksheets, visual and auditory activities, kinetic exercises and more. We can help your child to perform to his/her best ability inalleducationalareas, developingasaunique, confidentperson.Thank you to all the parents that allow us to help their children in ways they never thought possible. off. Remember to always put sun screen on your child, at least SPF 30, even in colder weather, and ensure they are always hydrated.
Lastly, when walking with your children in crowded places like shopping centers, keep your children close to you at all times. One can use a harness or a wrist strap to ensure your child does not wander off. Make sure they wear a band around their wrist (child proof and not made of paper) with the parent’s phone number on it. It should also include any illnesses the child has.
With all this taken into account, your holiday will end up being everything you dreamed of, and so much more. Be safe this summer, have fun and keep out of harm’s way. Enjoy!
The article was written by Kerri Goldberg from 4aKID – www.4akid.co.za
When you are travelling to your destination, make sure your children are buckled up correctly and legally. Children under 3 years of age must be in a car seat and children over 3 must be in a booster seat or a seat belt restraining device. Children must be buckled up appropriately, securely and at ALL times of the trip. Even going at 20km/h, without a seatbelt, children can get thrown through windscreens due to their weight. Take short breaks on your trip, to ensure the safety of your passengers.
Secondly, be very vigilant when your kids are on the beach. You need to ensure they are always in your sight, as beaches can get extremely crowded. If you can, use a child locator as a precautionary measure. Only allow your child to swim when you are with them and there MUST be a life guard on duty. One can even use a transportable pool alarm, if the kids like running
Child Safetywhen travellingYou wait anxiously, often an entire year, to go on holiday with your children. A time to relax, have fun and share beautiful memories together. However, your much awaited holiday could be over in a second, if your child getslost, drowns or you land up in a car crash.

Special Needs
Affordable services for your special needs child! As a parent it is stressful enough to deal with the accompany emotions of dealing with a diagnosis of autism or a related disorder. One on one services can cost up to R20 000 per month! Sending your child to a school for autism is an alternative, but you might be on the waiting list for years.
The solution?Affordable services should be available to any and all children in need. ABA (Applied Behavioural Analysis), Floortime, Playtherapy and other interventions are with all due respect, not rocket science. The solution for affordable services is affordable labour. It is possible, probable and logical to train a student, friend of the family, nanny or a parent up to do therapy with your child and have “updates” with a clinical ABA supervisor while getting ongoing training.
Where, when, who?ABAfrica (www.helpingautism.com) offers initial assess-ments with children, parents and a possible therapist to train for an average of 4-6 hours. After the initial assessment regular (weekly, biweekly or monthly) updates will be done to ensure consistency of program and progress of programs. This way, the cost of therapy depends on the rate the parent discusses with the student or nanny. Anyone can do ABA therapy!
Finding a student:Most Honours students need to gain experience to be accepted into a Masters degree. It’s worth researching at the various Universities in and around Cape Town to give students this amazing opportunity. If you want to help your child, there is a way that is cost effective!

Ways to Encourage Indoor Kids to Play Outside1. Take the indoors out: Toys are all open to a world of
new possibilities when taken outdoors.2. Use outdoor spaces as an extension of your indoor
space: A patio can provide shelter for play outdoors. 3. Spend time together outdoors as a family: Whether
it be an evening walk together or involving your chil-dren in washing the car.
4. Take time to explore a range of outdoor environ-ments: Think beyond your own backyard when it comes to kids playing outdoors. Go to the park, beach, farm, petting zoo.
5. Involving children in outdoor chores: Whether it be washing or walking the dog, pulling weeds or hanging washing.
6. Just add water: As a sensory activity it aids brain de-velopment, and as a cognitive activity it lays a foun-dation for later scientific and mathematical learning, not that kids care about that at all, they just like to splash, pour, stir and get wet!
7. Make it a habit: You might like to try instituting a daily ‘green hour‘ as consistently spending time outdoors everyday is important to encouraging a child’s en-gagement with natural places as playful spaces.

The chores suggested below are a rough guideline of age appropriate jobs for kids. Keep in mind that kids are different both developmentally and physically. Some children may be able to handle more than others, some less. It’s even o.k. to start with one chore, especially if assigning chores is new in your family. We want our kids to succeed so we need to set up a system that supports success!

will be done as a helper and slowly kids can graduate to doing them independently!

WHEN TO HAVE THE FIRST DENTAL CHECK UP?
New parents often ask, “When should my child first see a dentist?”
The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that children who are at risk of early childhood cavities visit a pediatric dentist by age 1. Another common piece of advice that I would give to parents is to bring the children in as soon as theirfirsttootherupts.Manyparentsseemshockedatthis,as they assume that kids teeth have no nerves, or maybe do not get decay. Other parents believe that these teeth are not important.
These views could not be further from the truth. Ask any parent that calls us as emergency when their child has been up all night with raging tooth ache.
Cavities, or holes, are not all that you will be told about at thechild’sfirstvisit.Hopefullyyourdentistwillgiveyousomeinsight into:

There are many ways you can help your kids adjust to separation or divorce. Your patience, reassurance, and listening ear can minimize tension as children learn to cope with new circumstances. By providing routines kids can rely on, you remind children they can count on you for stability, structure, and care. And if you can maintain a working relationship with your ex, you can help kids avoid the stress that comes with watching parents in conflict. Such a transitional time can’t be without some measure of hardship, but you can powerfully reduce your children’s pain by making their well-being your top priority.

Children& Divorce
As a parent, it’s normal to feel uncertain about how to give your
children the right support through your divorce or separation. It may
be uncharted territory, but you can successfully navigate this
unsettling time — and help your kids emerge from it feeling loved,
