Leader BIBLE STUDY

On the sixth day of creation, God created man in His own image. God formed the man out of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. (Gen. 2:7) Man was set apart as different from the rest of God’s creation. God did not breathe into the animals. He skillfully formed man out of dust as a potter forms a pot out of clay. (See Isa. 64:8.)

God sustained the man. He planted a garden in Eden and put the man there to work it and keep it. (Gen. 2:8,15) Then God gave the man a command. God told the man, “You must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Then God explained the consequences, “For on the day you eat from it, you will certainly die” (Gen. 2:17).

Then God made woman from the man’s rib. She was a suitable helper for him. Both man and woman were created in God’s image. The first man, Adam, and the first woman, Eve, lived in the garden and enjoyed God’s friendship.

We know Adam and Eve did not keep the command God gave, and their disobedience brought sin into the world. For that reason, God sent His Son, Jesus—“the image of the invisible God” (Col. 1:15) and “the exact expression of His nature” (Heb. 1:3). God the Son became fully man, acting as the second Adam, to bring life to those who are in Him. (See 1 Cor. 15:45-49.)

As you teach kids this week, help them understand that being made in God’s image means we are made like Him, or patterned after Him. God does not have a physical body; He is Spirit, and He has given each of us a spirit. God gives people the ability to think and to feel emotions and to make choices. He gives us the ability to understand right and wrong.Emphasize that God made people different than anything else He created. God created people in His own image (Gen. 1:26) and for His glory (Isa. 43:7).

21God the Creator

God Created PeopleGenesis 1:26–2:25

On the sixth day of creation, God made people. God created people differently than anything else He created. God created people in His very own image. God took dust from the ground and made a man. God breathed His very own breath into the man, and the man became alive. God made a garden in the land of Eden, and He put the man in the garden. God told the man to work in the garden and take care of it.

God provided food from the trees for the man to eat, and God provided a river to water the garden. Then God said, “You can eat from any of the trees in the garden, except for one.” The garden had a tree in it called the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God warned the man, “If you eat from that tree, you will die.”

Now God was not yet finished with creation. He saw the man and said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.”

So God decided to make a helper for the man. God brought to the man the animals He had created, and the man gave names to all of the creatures. But none of the animals was a good helper for the man.

So God made the man fall fast asleep. He took one of the man’s ribs and created a woman. When the man saw the woman, he was very happy.

The woman was a perfect helper for the man; she was his wife. The man’s name was Adam, and his wife’s name was Eve.

The BIBLE STORY

22 Kids Worship GuideUnit 1 • Session 2

God gave Adam and Eve good things. He put them in charge of the animals and provided everything they needed. God looked at everything He had made, and it was very good. God had done everything He planned to do. So on the seventh day of creation, God rested from His work.

Christ Connection: God created people in His own image. Adam was like God in some ways, but he was not a perfect representation of God. God sent His Son, Jesus, to show us exactly what God is like. (Colossians 1:15) Jesus is the perfect representation of God because He is God. (Hebrews 1:3)

CountdownShow the countdown video as your kids arrive, and set it to end as worship time begins.

Introduce the session (2 minutes)[As the countdown video music winds down, Logan enters with luggage. He is looking around, confused.]LOGAN • I’ve never been first to arrive when Charlie and I

go on a trip. I hope everything is OK. Have you guys seen Charlie? She didn’t leave me, did she?

[Charlie enters, dressed as if she’s headed to the gym. She looks angry and won’t look Logan in the eyes.]LOGAN • Hey, Charlie. Why aren’t you dressed for

adventure? I know you have something really big planned for us today!

CHARLIE • [to kids] Is there a mosquito near me? I could have sworn I heard something buzzing. Did you hear anything?

LOGAN •[Jump in front of Charlie’s view and crane body to make sure Charlie sees you.] Charlie! I’m right here. I know it’s hard to believe, but I’m here before you this time. Hello? Charlie? Can you see me? I can see me. I’m about 87.6873 percent sure I’m not invisible.

CHARLIE • [ignoring him] I’m adventuring without a partner in crime today. You can tell Logan that he’s not going. He did not think the majestic, mighty chipmunk experience was all that majestic or mighty. I need a co-pilot who at least pretends to care. [Pick up a large roll of paper and drop it, allowing it to roll across the floor.] THIS will be the other pea in my pod, the salt to my pepper. [Give marker to Logan. Lay down on paper.] Trace me!

LOGAN • [stuttering] I, uh, I loved those little chipper guys yesterday. What were they again? Great and graceful groundhogs? Squirrelly squirreling squirrels?

CHARLIE • Chipmunks! TRACE!LOGAN • [Quickly trace Charlie.] OK, but I hope we can

work this out. I mean, who else is going to go with you to look into the beady eyes of those little field mice? I really loved the chipmice. They were awesome.

CHARLIE • [Sit up and cut out the tracing ferociously.] This, this is my new and improved companion. Looks just like me. [Stand and make the cutout walk.] Perfect.

LOGAN • Well, I bet you’ll love our Bible story today. Especially since you made this cutout. [Exaggerate.] It is beautiful. It looks just like you!

CHARLIE • [Use the cutout to motion and pretend to talk.] Give it up, Logan.

[Charlie continues to carry the cutout throughout the session, using it to motion, pretending that it is talking, and manipulating it so that it “walks” alongside her at all times.]

Giant Timeline (1 min.)LOGAN • Remember our last story. It had chipmice ...CHARLIE • Chipmunks.

Tip: It may be helpful to trace Charlie on the rolled paper using a pencil before the session. Logan can mime tracing Charlie in front of the group.

• Giant Timeline

25God the Creator

LOGAN • It had chipmunks in it. Well, really we just talked about how God created all things, but He created chipmunks, too. Before anything was created, there was only God. Then, He spoke and the world and all in it was created! God created people in a special way, though. Do you know how He created people? [Look at Charlie to answer, but only receive a blank stare.] God created people in His image. Do you want to know more? [Look at Charlie again. Again, no answer. Look at kids.] Do you want to know more? [Encourage them to say yes.] Good. Maybe you can help me convince Charlie to forgive me for forgetting the name of the chipmilks.

Big picture question (1 min.)LOGAN • [to kids] As you listen to the story, I want you to

listen for the answer to a question. Why did God create the world? Charlie is not going to help me know the answer, so you are my only hope.

Tell the Bible story (10 min.)Open your Bible to Genesis 1. Tell the Bible story in your own words using the script provided, or watch the Bible story video “God Created People.”LOGAN • Didn’t you love hearing the story? God created

us in His image. Wow. He wanted people to be a picture of Himself, so that people could better understand His nature. Of course, people aren’t exactly like God, but we do get to share some characteristics with Him like loving others, being wise, and being creative. God loves perfectly. He is the most wise because He is all-knowing. And He is the Creator of all things! How cool?! We were created in the image of God!

CHARLIE • [begrudgingly] I guess that means that I should not be so angry at you then. After all, you were created in

God’s image, too.LOGAN • I’m so glad that you are not angry with me

anymore. I definitely messed up and didn’t handle going to the chipmilk exhibit as I should have.

CHARLIE • Chipmunk. You know what? If we leave now, we’d have time for another adventure today. [Make the cutout “whisper” into your ear.] My friend here heard that there is a wax museum across town. Everybody who is anybody is there.

LOGAN • Wax museum? Of people?CHARLIE • Yeah. They are like statues, but made of wax. LOGAN • [hesitantly] Oh boy. First, we should probably

answer our big picture question. [to kids] Why did God create the world? God created everything for His glory.

CHARLIE • Oh yeah. Glory. Last time I learned that glory is not a person. She probably won’t be at the museum.

LOGAN • She definitely won’t be there. God created us for His glory, or His fame. He wants all people to know about how awesome He is, and we can worship Him by praising Him for His greatness and showing others His greatness, too.

CHARLIE • Got it. Ready to hit the road? LOGAN • Not yet. We aren’t done talking to our friends.CHARLIE • Oh. Well I’m taking my friend with us. [Make

cutout nod head.]LOGAN • OK. The kids’ parents would miss them, though,

so we will wait until we are done. We have some important things to talk about anyway. Last time, we learned that God created everything for His glory. Everything He made was good. He created the earth, the sun, the sky, the animals, the fish, the birds, the seas, and everything on earth. After He had created all those things, God made man. He made Adam and then He breathed

27God the Creator

His own breath into Adam’s lungs. God made man in His image. Then, God saw that Adam needed a helper, so He created a wife for Adam. Adam named his wife Eve. God created people in His own image; God created them male and female.

CHARLIE • God cared so much for people that He created us in His image. Wow. It’s like we are a small picture of what God is like but not a perfect one because we mess up. By sending Jesus, God made a way for us to be made right with Him, even when we mess up! And that changes everything.

The Gospel: God’s Plan for Me (option)LOGAN • That does change everything. Because of Jesus’

death on the cross to pay for sin and His resurrection, we can have a right relationship with God!

Use your Bible and the guide provided to explain how to become a Christian. Encourage kids to ask their parents or other adults any questions they have about becoming a Christian.

Anytime you share how to become a Christian in a large group environment, try to have counselors available to meet one-on-one with kids. Make sure kids know who they can talk to and when they can talk.

Group demonstration (5 min.)LOGAN • So God created people in His own image; God

created them male and female. It’s like people are a picture of what God is like. Of course, God is perfect and never messes up, while people like me still mess up. Sorry for not being a good friend earlier, Charlie. I’m sure glad that God sent Jesus to pay for all the times that we mess up.

• roll paper• marker• scissors

28 Kids Worship GuideUnit 1 • Session 2

CHARLIE • Me too. So you’re saying that this cutout I’ve been carrying around all morning—my image—looks like me, but it is obviously not me. People could probably get a good idea of what I look like from it, though.

Choose one child to come on stage and lay on the roll paper. Trace around them and cut out the shape. Explain that this cutout is not the person, but is made in the person’s likeness. Similarly, we are not God, but we are made in His likeness. Ask kids to describe ways we are like God. We are creative, wise, loving, and kind, which can be a picture of God’s perfect creativeness, wisdom, and loving-kindness.

Review (4 min.)CHARLIE • OK, so we should probably review our story, just

to make sure everyone was listening.LOGAN • Does that mean you weren’t listening?CHARLIE • Of course not. I mean, I might have missed a

point or two. I bet these friends could help us though.Invite the kids to answer the following questions:

1. What day of creation did God make people? (the sixth day, Genesis 1:26-31)

2. How did God make man? (God took dust from the ground and made a man. Then God breathed life into Him; Genesis 2:7)

3. Where did God place the man? (in the garden of Eden, Genesis 2:8)

4. God also created a woman, whom Adam named Eve. How did God create Eve? (from Adam’s rib, Genesis 2:21-24)

5. Why did God create the world? God created the world and everything in it for His glory.

29God the Creator

Key Passage (5 min.)CHARLIE • Let’s review our key passage. Do you remember

it from our last time together? It says that God is the One who created all things and that His Son, Jesus, has given us life! Jesus gave us life when He died on the cross to pay for our sins. When we repent of our sins and trust Jesus, we get to spend eternity with God!

LOGAN • That’s right. Let’s read our key passage together.Read the key passage together. Then, guide kids to read it in slow motion, in a high pitched voice, and like a robot.

Group game (10 min.)LOGAN • Great job. Can anyone tell me what our main

point is for the day? [Wait for responses.] God created people in His own image; God created them male and female.

CHARLIE • To help us understand our main point, we should play a game of imitation. Find a partner who is close to you. Now, figure out which of you has on the darkest shirt. That person will be the leader first. The leader will face their partner and do motions with his arms and make funny faces with his face. Each partner must imitate the leader, as if the leader is looking into a mirror.

Continue play. After a few moments, guide kids to trade roles. LOGAN • That was great! God created people in His own

image, and we can be like mirrors who show other people what God is like. Of course, we won’t be a perfect picture, but hopefully people will be able to understand God’s love and care for them by the way that we show that love to them! Isn’t that right, Charlie?

[Charlie nods the head of the paper cutout.]

Sing and Offering (3-12 min.)LOGAN • Let’s praise God for all that He created by singing

to Him!Sing “All Creatures of Our God and King.” Choose other songs as time allows.Song suggestions:

• “All Creatures of Our God and King” song (unit theme)

• “Your Glory is Forever” song• “Lord of All” song• “Live to Worship You” song• “These Are the Names of God” song

Missions (6 min.)LOGAN • Oh! Do you remember learning about the

missionaries who serve along the Amazon River last time? Well, one of the countries that the Amazon River runs through is Brazil in South America. Our video today is from some missionary kids. Jackson, who is filming the video, is from Brazil. They are going to tell us how we can follow God and show others about Him everywhere we go. Let’s watch our video.

Show the missions video “Following God.”CHARLIE • Missionaries answer God’s call to go all over the

world and tell people about Jesus! But God also calls us to tell others about Jesus right where we are.

LOGAN • Yeah, there could be people who have never heard that Jesus died to pay for their sins and was resurrected three days later. This is big news that we can share with others!

Announcements (2 min.)CHARLIE • Well, I think it’s time we jet off and tell people

about Jesus at the museum.LOGAN • Yes, it is probably time to go. Let’s make

announcements first.Make any announcements from your kids’ ministry.

Prayer (2 min.)LOGAN • Before we go, let’s pray and thank God for creating

us in His image. God, thank You for creating all things for Your glory. Help us be a picture of Your character in the way that we live. Thank You for helping us understand more about You by creating us in Your image. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Additional idea CHARACTER LIST

Place a poster on the wall and write What is God like? along the top. Guide kids to help you list some of the characteristics of God. Help kids understand that God has made us in His image, so we have many similar characteristics, too. Ask kids to tell you ways they may show others what God is like.CHARLIE/LOGAN • How cool is it that God created us in

His image? I can’t wait to see what we will learn next week, but for now, we have to get to the museum! We’ll see you next week! [Charlie and Logan exit.]

The Gospel: God’s Plan for MeAsk kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means “good news.” It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids.

God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean.

We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23)

God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve. It’s something we, as sinners, could never earn on our own. Jesus alone saves us. Read and explain Ephesians 2:8-9.

Jesus gives. Share with kids that Jesus lived a perfect life, died on the cross for our sins, and rose again. Because Jesus gave up His life for us, we can be welcomed into God’s family for eternity. This is the best gift ever! Read Romans 5:8; 2 Corinthians 5:21; or 1 Peter 3:19.

We respond. Tell kids that they can respond to Jesus. Read Romans 10:9-10,13. Review these aspects of our response: Believe in your heart that Jesus alone saves you through what He’s already done on the cross. Repent, turning from self and sin to Jesus. Tell God and others that your faith is in Jesus.

Offer to talk with any child who is interested in responding to Jesus.
