This magazine is pub-lished before most local football teams have begun their season—except for one important squad. The defending state champion Chilton Christian Academy Patriots started off their second season in style, with a convincing win over Victory Baptist. You can read all about

CCA inside the magazine; you’ll also want to catch up with another team, Maplesville, that is a perennial title con-tender.

Chilton County High School, Jemison and Billingsley are each looking for sig-nificant improvement in their coaches’ second seasons at the helm.

Isabella, Thorsby and Verbena, mean-while, will try to bounce back from 2011 campaigns that didn’t end the way they wanted.

Jemison’s football team was primed for its best season in years, and then the bottom fell out.

The Panthers entered Week 7 in 2011 with a

5-1 r ecord and sitting firmly in the driver ’s seat for a play-off berth. Then came three consecu-tive losses to region opponents West Blocton, Sumter-Central and Greene County, and JHS found itself miss-ing the playoffs for the first time in eight years.

To have a differ-ent result in Year 2 of coach Merritt Bowden’s tenure, the Panthers obvi-ously need more mental toughness. Bowden said he thinks that will start with the players being physically stronger.

Bowden has an impressive back-ground in strength and condition-ing (he headed up the effort at Jacksonville State University, among other coach-ing gigs) and set about making the Panthers stronger when he first took the job. With a full offseason under Bowden’s guidance, fans might start to see the results this season.

“I could tell right away that our physical strength just wasn’t where it needed to be,” Bowden said. “All of that has gotten much better. That’s going to help us a whole lot.”

Bowden wants the players to be

stronger, sure, but the focus isn’t on big muscles, it’s on exercises that will actually benefit the players on the football field.

For example, training with tires as weights is a traditional football strength technique, but Jemison incorporates a harness with a pulley system that keeps constant tension on the player as he performs foot -ball moves.

“It’s basically creating power and speed within the movements that

you play with,” Bowden said. “The kids have really picked up on that. It’s competitive, and they really seem to like it.”

As a result of their work, fans might see a differ-ent type of Jemison team this season. Last year, the Panthers leaned heavily on a group of ball handling players--quarter-back Trey Bryant,

running back Javae Swindle and receiver Eddie Hubbard--to make explosive plays. This year, JHS will be more likely to grind it out.

“It’s hard to replace those kind of people,” Bowden said of the depart-ed seniors. “But at the same time,

you tend to lean on someone like Javae more than you lean on the team, so to speak.

“I think our guys know that they’re going to have to work to move the chains. We’re going to have to run the clock. Everybody’s role is going to be a little expanded without someone like Javae Swindle.”

Jemison will compensate for the losses with a deep group of runners—Kevin King, Tyler Henderson and Keyshawn Jemison—and a front seven on defense that returns every starter from last year.

“We were young up front on defense last year, but having to play a whole year like that, I hope it pays off now,” Bowden said.

When the Maplesville football team takes the field on Friday

nights in the fall, fans expect the Red Devils to win.

Players and coaches expect it, too, but in more of a we-worked-hard-to-get-here-and-nothing-is-guaranteed sort of way.

MHS hasn’t lost a regular season game since Oct. 2, 2009. The Devils have gone 34-4 over the past three sea-sons. Coach Brent Hubbert earned his 100th career win in last year’s 47-26 vic-tory over Pickens County.

All that winning is great. It enhances school pride; gives students a reason to play football, where they learn discipline, teamwork and the value of hard work; and it adds weight to Hubbert’s voice in the locker room.

But winning on a regular basis--and seemingly so easily--can do something else. It can cause those associated with the program to start to feel like this is the way it’s sup -posed to be, and this is the way it always will be, no matter what.

Hubbert doesn’t think that way because he remembers too well tak-ing over a program with a 10-game losing streak, struggling to a 5-6 record in his first year and the work it took to get Maplesville to where

it is now. Players’ histories don’t go that far back, and fans forget quickly.

“We’re trying to make sure that complacency doesn’t become a prob-lem,” Hubbert said. “This group, this particular team, has not won any games.”

So far, though, so good. Hubbert described the 2012 squad’s attitude as “great,” not least because of a sea-soned senior class.

“We’re looking for big things from this senior group,” he said.

There are eight seniors and 13 juniors that bring experience to the team, but the largest class represented on the roster is the 16 freshmen.

Providing moti-vation to carry the players through those grueling off-season workouts and August prac-

tices is a schedule that features two traditional rivals: Sweet Water and Jemison.

Sweet Water, which has moved up to the 2A classification, defeated Maplesville in the state playoffs in 2005, ‘06 and ‘07 on its way to state championships.

Maplesville and Jemison played annually through 1971, and then resumed the series from 1994 through 2001, at which time Hubbert

the little school down Highway 191 owns a 16-9 edge over its big cousin.

“Our guys always look to see when and where the Billingsley and Autaugaville games are going to be,” Hubbert said. “They’re excited about both of those

games. And then with Sweet Water and Jemison being added to the schedule, of course they’re excited about those chal-lenges.”

A team that aver-ages scoring 35 points per game would expect to win a lot of football games.

Isabella won six games in 2011, but the Mustangs lost five games, including their first-round playoff game. Allowing more than 28 points per game was largely to blame.

“Defense has been the No. 1 pri-ority,” IHS coach Scott Booth said about the offseason. “We gave up too many points last year. We scored some points, but we had a lot of trouble stopping people.”

The team’s defen-sive shortcomings were especially apparent in the losses, which included giving up 70 points to American Christian, 72 points to Vincent and 54 points to Leroy in the play-offs.

But Booth said steps have been taken to improve the defense.

“We’ve moved some people around and should have more depth this year,” he said. “We’ve done a few things scheme-wise; we’ll go back and forth between a four-man front and a three-man front so that we can have fewer line -men in the game, allow them to get

more rest.“Also, that lets us get more

people involved in the secondary. That’s another area where we strug-gled. We gave up too many deep passes.”

Offense, meanwhile, should again be no problem.

Quarterback Tyler Smith, who accounted for more than 1,500 yards rushing and passing as a freshman,

returns and will be joined by backfield mates DeRodgus Campbell, Mason Pate and Bobby Knox.

Smith is a natu-rally gifted run-ner, and most of his yards came on the ground. Booth wants to have more balance with what Smith contributes--to save his body from the wear and tear, and to make the offense more dangerous.

“If we’re a threat to throw the ball, that’s going to help

our offense because these defenses can’t load the box against us,” Booth said.

year and has the exact same number this season--but the coach said the players are more experienced.

“Last year at this time, we were still trying to figure out

where we were going to line up,” he said. “This year, we’re thinking about what we’re going to do once we’re line up.”

The Billingsley football team was good last season.

The Bears definitely weren’t bad. They won seven games and made the playoffs, turning things

around in coach Tyson McLean’s first season after a 2010 campaign that included seven losses.

Billingsley was good, but it wasn’t great. The four losses—by a com-bined score of 178-24—serve as proof the squad has a ways to go to com-pete with and defeat the likes of rival Maplesville.

“I’m just looking for us to build on last year,” McLean said. “Last year we kind of turned things around; now we want to build on that success, get some excitement back in the program and try to close the gap on the good teams.”

That task will be made difficult by the loss of 10 seniors from last year’s squad, many of whom were important contribu-

tors. The Bears will likely count on some help from players who last year were members of the school’s unbeaten junior varsity squad.

Included in the losses are BHS’s entire backfield. The battle for the starting quar-

terback position could last all the way to Aug. 31, when the Bears take on Prattville Christian in their first game of the sea-son—and then some.

McLean said senior Tyler McLean (the coach’s son) and sophomore Thomas Nichols are neck-and-neck, and both could wind up playing.

“They could almost be twins out there,” coach McLean said. “They’re close in size and ability.

Thomas maybe has a little more quickness; Tyler maybe has a little better grasp of the offense, being a senior.

“I’m not opposed to both of them play -ing. At least the first game or, why not give them both a shot and see which one separates himself.”

One wouldn’t know it by look-ing at Chilton County’s 3-7 record in coach Donnie Hand’s

first season, but the Tigers were close.

No, a game or two wouldn’t have made the difference in CCHS mak-ing the playoffs, but the Tigers were awfully close in an awful lot of games. Five of their losses were by one posses-sion—eight points or less.

Hand hopes familiarity will help the team get over the hump.

“Last year, we were playing catch-up the whole year,” he said. “Right now, the kids are more comfortable; I’m more comfortable. We’re 1,000 years ahead of where we were last time.”

It’s Hand’s sec-ond time around, sure, but he also has the advantage of coaching many of the same players from his inau-gural season. Four starters—line-men Logan Baker, Chase Brown, Delondre DeJarnett and Dyquan Floyd—and six total players were lost to graduation from last year’s team.

The 2012 senior class is much deeper.

“They’ve been in the program

a long time,” Hand said. “They’re working hard; they’re good leaders. They know they can’t say, ‘Wait ‘til next year.’”

Still, all four of those lost starters were linemen, a tough situation for a team whose success will depend on its ability to run the football on offense and stop the run on defense.

Many CCHS players will again contribute on both offense and

defense. That’s unusual for a Class 5A program, but Hand said it says more about the players’ talent.

“We’ve got kids that are too good on offense and defense not to play both sides,” he said.

Even with the losses, the offen-sive line should be a team strength, thanks in no small part to senior Anthony Neece.

“We’re still going to run the football,” Hand said. “Last

year, we had a little problem with depth at running back, but this year we’re practicing five tailbacks and three fullbacks that can play in a game.

Verbena began its 2011 campaign with five seniors manning crucial positions and leadership roles.

Quarterback Christian Coston went down in the first game of the season, a win over Thorsby, and others soon followed. By the end of the year, only two members of that group of seniors were left playing.

It was a difficult situation at the time as VHS won only two games, but coach Mike Harris and his play-ers hope the experi-ence will pay off for the players that return this season with a fresh slate.

“They’re com-ing along with it,” Harris said. “We’ve had good practices and good attitudes.”

Of the five gradu-ating seniors from last year’s team, only one was a line-man, which makes the offensive and defensive fronts a good place to start when looking for strengths for this year ’s team. Senior Latrail Jackson is a Preseason All-Area Team selection, and junior Jon Cleckler should also be a standout.

“Our line will be stronger than it’s been in several years now,” Harris said.

The linemen will be blocking for a new set of backs looking for yards in a new offensive system.

VHS in the past has run a double wing offense, but new offensive

coordinator Scott Doss has brought a single wing, Notre Dame Box style attack. Fans that have seen Isabella play the last couple of years will recognize the scheme; Doss worked with IHS coach Scott Booth for years.

“We’ve run a touch of it in the past,” Harris said. “Our blocking back is in a different position--that’s the only difference, really. Coach Doss has run it in the past, and he’s really good at teaching it.”

The runners benefitting from the system will be Jeronskie Williams and Jacob Montgomery. Williams is

a senior who didn’t play last year after ACL surgery during his sophomore year. His addition will excite the offense.

Most importantly, Verbena will have to capitalize on any chance it gets to build momentum. The Devils won their second game of the year last seaosn in Week 5, against

Isabella. They could have made it two wins in a row the next week but fell at Fayetteville, 21-20.

VHS lost the four games remaining on the schedule in 2011 and came up at least 29 points in each contest.

“We need to avoid those injuries again, and we need something to go our way,” Harris said.

What can the Chilton Christian Academy football team possibly do for an encore?

In their first year as a team, the Patriots won the very first Christian Football Association state championship—in dra-matic fashion, no less, 58-50 over a team they had lost to just two weeks earlier.

As much as CCA play-ers, coaches and fans would like some more time to soak up the joy of the accomplishment, the time to don the helmets and pads draws near again.

And the Patriots expect to be right back in the mix in a CFA that will feature some additions. Only one player, Will Hamby, was lost to graduation from last year’s team, though he played perhaps the most important position on the field: quarterback.

“Our goal is to be back up ther e again,” coach Todd Stephens said. “We’re a lot more prepared this year, in every aspect.

We know what to expect; we know mor e about getting the field ready, the equip-ment...We’ve had a lot more preparation.”

Indeed, the first time CCA took the field, players alternated emotions between confused and overwhelmed. They lost, 42-26, but wouldn’t drop another game until the end of the regular season. The

setback to Marion pro-vided motivation for the playoffs.

But motivation is hard-er to come by when your last memory on a football field includes hoisting a state championship trophy. A trio of seniors will try to keep this year’s squad hungry and focused—center/nose guard Ryan Powell, run-ning back/safety Chris Lassinger and offensive

lineman/defensive lineman Damion Jones.

“One of our key points of emphasis for spring practice was avoiding compla-cency. That’s in the past,” Stephens said of the championship run. “It’s not going to do a single thing for us this year. All it’s going to do is put a target on our back.”

You’d be hard-pressed to find a high school football team in Alabama with a tougher task this

season than Thorsby.The Rebels were barely moved

up to the 3A classification with the latest re-alignment. They’ll have one of the smallest enrollments in the classification this season, and they weren’t particularly successful in Class 2A last season, compiling a 2-8 record.

And the schedule will include pre-season No. 1 Leeds, plus traditional power Trinity, and Midfield and Tarrant, two teams that competed in Class 4A last sea-son.

“We’ll have about 45 kids on varsity,” coach Billy Jackson said. “That’s good for a 2A program, but for a 3A program, we don’t have the numbers. Trinity will have 70-80 kids.”

Still, the Rebels have had some success under Jackson—in 2010, they went 8-2 in the regular season and earned a playoff berth—and the coach wants the team to have the attitude that they can win against their new competition.

“Some are excited about the chal-lenge, and some are not so sure,” Jackson said. “Our first game with Verbena dictates a lot. They’re

always well-coached. It’s important that we win that first one--if for nothing else than confidence.”

How the Rebels develop through the season, of course, will also be important. Jackson said the 2011 team never developed an identity, and instead of improving, finished the season on a sour note. After winning their only two games in a three-week span in the middle of the season, THS finished with lack-luster performances in three con-secutive losses.

“We have some easygoing kids, not a lot of strong personalities,” he said. “We’ve just got kids that are out there trying to do the best that they can.”

Thorsby should be strongest near the line of scrim-mage on both sides of the ball. Senior offensive linemen Gauge Brown and Brady Garrigus are

Preseason All-Area Team selections. But without much explosiveness, the Rebels might walk a fine line between winning and losing.

Jackson said the coach staff, like the players, is determined to show more resolve. The coach said he thinks the staff might have gotten away from its plan last year when
