Philadelphia leads the all-time regular season series 31-15-1, but the Browns hold a 17-6-1 advantage in Cleveland. The Browns are 27-32 (.458) all-time in season openers, but have lost their last seven. This Sunday will mark the fourth time in the last five seasons that the Browns will open the season against an opponent from the NFC. Cleveland finished the 2012 preseason with a 2-2 record. Since 2004, the Browns have finished preseason play .500 or better in seven of the last nine years. In Pat Shurmur’s first year as Browns head coach, he helped develop a draft class in which all eight members saw action in the regular season, three of whom started all 16 games. It was the first time that three rookies from the same team started all 16 contests since the 1983 San Diego Chargers. Under Shurmur’s guidance, the team committed just 19 turnovers in 2011, which tied for the fourth-fewest in the NFL and was the fourth-lowest total in franchise history. Overall, the defense finished the season ranked 10th in the league in yards allowed, a 12-spot improvement from the previous year. It marked the first time the Browns finished in the top-10 in total defense since 1994 when they finished seventh. During the offseason, Brad Childress was hired to serve as offensive coordinator after most recently spending five seasons (2006-10) as the head coach of the Minnesota Vi- kings. Childress and Shurmur spent six seasons (1999-2005) coaching the offense together on the staff of the Philadelphia Eagles. Childress brings 33 years of coaching experience on both the collegiate and professional levels to the Browns. In fact, the Browns have one of the most experienced coaching staffs in the NFL. Seven members of the staff pre- viously served as a head coach, either at the professional or collegiate level, including each of the team’s three coordina- tors. This includes Childress, defense coordinator Dick Jau- ron and Senior Assistant - Defense Ray Rhodes, who each previously served as head coaches in the NFL. The Browns enter 2012 with one of the youngest teams in the NFL as the roster is comprised of 15 rookies, one first- year player and 11 players in their second season. Of the 15 rookies, nine of them were selected by Cleveland during the 2012 NFL draft and one during the Supplemental Draft. Five rookies (RB Trent Richardson, QB Brandon Weeden, RT Mitchell Schwartz, DT John Hughes and SLB James-Mi- chael Johnson) are slated as starters on the team’s depth chart on page 34, while several others will be counted on to contribute right away. vs. Regular Season Week 1, Game 1 Cleveland Browns (0-0) vs. Philadelphia Eagles (0-0) DATE: Sunday, September 9, 2012 SITE: Cleveland Browns Stadium KICKOFF: 1:00 p.m. CAPACITY: 73,300 SURFACE: Grass Browns alumni Bernie Kosar (1985-93) and Hanford Dix- on (1981-89) will serve as honorary captains. THE COACHES CLEVELAND BROWNS - PAT SHURMURThe Cleveland Browns named Pat Shurmur as the 13th full-time head coach in franchise history on January 13, 2011. Shurmur’s ré-sumé includes 24 years of coaching experi-ence with 13 in the NFL. In those 13 sea-sons, he has been a part of teams that have qualifi ed for the playoffs seven times, won fi ve division crowns and posted one Super

Bowl appearance. In Shurmur’s fi rst year as Browns head coach, he helped develop a draft class in which all eight members saw action in the regular season, three of whom started all 16 games. Under Shurmur’s guidance, the team committed just 19 turnovers in 2011, while the defense fi nished the season ranked 10th in the league in yards allowed, a 12-spot improvement from the previ-ous year. Prior to joining Cleveland, Shurmur spent two seasons (2009-10) as the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams. He helped the Rams improve to a 7-9 record following a 1-15 season in 2009, the second-biggest turnaround in the league that season. In 2010, he helped shape quarterback Sam Bradford, the top pick in the 2010 draft, as Bradford set NFL rookie records for comple-tions (354) and attempts (590), while his 3,512 passing yards were the second-most by a rookie in league history (now third). Prior to joining the Rams, Shurmur spent 10 seasons with the Philadel-phia Eagles (1999-2008). He served as the team’s quarterbacks coach from 2002-08 and helped Donovan McNabb to three Pro Bowl selections during his tenure. Shurmur’s fi rst three seasons in Philadelphia (1999-2001) were spent as tight ends coach, where he developed three-time Pro Bowler Chad Lewis. Before joining the Eagles, Shurmur spent the 1998 season at Stanford University as offensive line coach. Prior to Stanford, Shurmur instructed the tight ends, special teams and offensive line at Michigan State University from 1990-97. A native of Dearborn, Mich., Shurmur lettered four seasons (1984-87) as a center at Michigan State University.

ABOUT THE EAGLESPhiladelphia fi nished the preseason 4-0, including a 27-10 victory over the Browns on August 24 at Cleve-land Browns Stadium. PHILADELPHIA EAGLES - ANDY REIDAfter taking over a 3-13 club on January 11, 1999, Andy Reid has turned the Eagles into one of the NFL’s elite teams. During his ten-ure, Reid has earned NFL Coach of the Year honors three times, captured six division titles and made fi ve trips to the NFC Cham-pionship game. Reid’s 14-year tenure at the Eagles helm has put him in an elite category

as well. He is one of 11 coaches in NFL history to win 60%- or-more of 200+ games (126-81-1, 60.8%). Reid guided the Eagles to a 8-8 mark in 2011. He came to the Eagles after spending seven seasons as an assistant coach in Green Bay under current Browns President Mike Holmgren. During that span, the Packers reached the playoffs six times and defeated New England in Super Bowl XXXI. During his 20-year NFL coaching career, Reid’s teams have made the playoffs 15 times (19-14 record in those games). He has coached in the Super Bowl three times, in the NFC Cham-pionship game eight times and in the Pro Bowl four times.

TOM HECKERT SAID...

(On if he was expecting to have 15 rookies on the roster coming into camp)- “I’m going to be totally honest with you, (Neal Gulkis) just told me that. I didn’t really know it was 15 so it’s obviously not something that we planned. I don’t know if Pat (Shurmur) told you guys, but you can see there are some unorthodox - maybe too many guys at one position. We talked about it in our meeting the other day and we wanted to keep the best 53 or what we consider the best 53 no matter what position, if we have to go light at one position or heavy at another one, we were willing to do it so I think it worked out that way at least right now and we’ll see how it goes.”

(On if he has ever been around a team with this many rookies before)- “I doubt it because fi rst off, most times you don’t have that many picks and you’re going to have one or two college free agents, but I think we had three college kids make it. Then we just had a lot of draft picks so most of the time you just don’t have that many picks. I don’t look at it as a negative at all. We like these guys.”

(On how he feels Josh Gordon has performed in the pre-season)- “I think he’s played well. Before the Philly game, that week he started to get into better shape, he was picking things up and you could just tell he looked better. He made plays beforehand, but it was different. I think he just felt more comfortable and he started looking like a real player out there and I think he’s done a good job.”

(On which position group is the most improved on the offense)- “I think it’s everything. You’re adding a big time running back, you’re adding in our opinion a really good re-ceiver in Josh (Gordon) and we’re adding another receiver in Travis (Benjamin). Those two positions alone and we obvi-ously like (Brandon) Weeden so if you’ve got your quarter-back, running back and receiver, that’s pretty good.”

(On what he likes about Craig Robertson and L.J. Fort and how they will have to lean on them early on)- “They’re not 100% sure how that whole thing is going to work out now depending on what happens with JMJ, but we’ve been pleasantly surprised. I’m not going to lie to you, we like them obviously, but they’ve done a good job, all those guys. Craig we watched in college and we only had him for two weeks last year. We knew he was a good athlete, but we never saw him hit anybody or any of that stuff so he’s been a really nice surprise. He’s going to play a lot for us, probably in our nickel stuff especially depending on what happens with Scott (Fujita) and the whole thing. L.J. played mostly MIKE just because D’Qwell (Jackson) wasn’t playing a whole lot,

but now he’s going to play SAM for us a little bit, but they played a lot in the preseason and looked pretty good. We’ll see when the lights come on how good they are.”

(On what he expects from Brandon Weeden)- “You guys know Brandon. This guy’s got his stuff together. I think he’s going to be really good. He knows he doesn’t have to do everything himself. He doesn’t have to go out for 500 yards and 10 touchdowns. He doesn’t have to do that. We think we’re starting to get better. Like I said, if he doesn’t turn the ball over, and we’re not saying play scared or anything, but if you can take care of the football, and we’re going to be fi ne. I hate talking about last year, but we took care of the football for the most part on offense. You’re going to be in most games if you don’t turn the ball over. That’s everybody, that’s not me. That’s 31 other teams saying the same thing. If you turn the ball over, I think the stats are astronomical. If you have more turnovers than the other team, you’re going to lose. That’s just fact.”

(On what the key is for this season)- “We’ve talked about it a million times, we can’t turn the ball over. In the preseason we turned the ball over way too much and that just can’t happen. We might be a lot better, but nobody can overcome turnovers. I think that’s a huge thing. I think defensively if we play anywhere near just not let teams score points and to obviously score more points it’s going to be a huge thing. I think defensively we should be okay and we’ll score some more points but we can’t turn the ball over. We just can’t do it.”

(On if strong-side linebacker is a thin position for the team)- “I don’t think it’s a thin area. Now, that’s a young area there is no question about it. I think you guys know the guy we claimed, Tank Carder, you add him to the mix and obviously he’s young, he’s a rookie, but we like these guys. We’ll see how they play, but all these guys, we think they performed well in the preseason and they’re going to have to play. That’s just the way it is.”

PAT SHURMUR SAID...

(On if he thinks they can win with 15 rookies on the ros-ter)- “Absolutely, we can win with 15 rookies. I’m not a guy that predicts what’s going to happen. All I know is I’ve seen these guys play good football. They have fresh legs. That’s what I’ll say. I expect that when we put them out there, ev-erybody out there, even the 15 rookies, are going to do what it takes.”

(On if he will have to coach differently with so many rookies)- “These guys have played games at other levels. I think it’s important that our veterans that are here help them get through the mental part of it. That is a lot of rookies, I would agree with that. It’s going to be fun to see the energy that they play with. I think that’s important.”

(On how prepared Brandon Weeden is for September 9)- “I think he’s very prepared. I think he’s had an outstanding camp. I thought he had an outstanding offseason. Really he’s kind of improved every day. For a guy that’s going through this for the fi rst time as a pro, I think he’s very ready.”

(On how Billy Winn has grown through the preseason)- “I think he’s improved in each of the games. He to me is like Josh Gordon. Each week I see something better and differ-ent about him. He’s done an excellent job in the preseason. I think he plays fast, there’s some quickness to him. He fi nds a way to free himself up in there, which is hard to pass-rush from the three-technique or the defensive tackle position. Especially because you’re dealing with play action and get-ting your run fi t fi rst and what not. I think he’s done a good job of creating a little bit of rush and he fl ashes. He’s a good athlete. He’s a skateboard guy, so he’s a good athlete. He can really chase things down, which I think he’s shown.”

(On his overview of how Alex Mack is coming along in his fourth year)- “I think he’s one of the fi ner centers in the league. I think he’s displayed that to me. He’s really the fi eld general up front in terms of getting everything started and getting everybody going in the right direction. Of course the quarterback is ultimately responsible, but blocking schemes and making decisions on who we’re blocking. When you’re blocking fi ve or six men, you’ve got to decide who are the most dangerous fi ve or who are the most dangerous six. A lot of times, that decision is fi rst made by the center. Now, the quarterback then comes and trumps it because he’s the one ultimately responsible, but the process of course gets started by the center. I’ve seen that become smoother. I think he’s very good in the run-game and the pass-game. He’s just kind of a solid, steady force in there, which you need for some-body that’s playing center.”

(On what Tashaun Gipson and Johnson Bademosi showed to make the team)- “Gipson I think showed us that he could play on scrimmage downs as a safety. I thought he did a nice job. He also contributed on special teams. Johnson Bademosi, obviously made his fi rst mark, in my mind, on special teams. We’ll try to develop him as a corner as well. Both guys had an outstanding camp. When you can fi nd two players, that you think are going to be good players in the way that we did, that helps us. We’re glad they made it.”

(On if there was ever doubt that Colt McCoy would be the backup)- “I went into this with an open mind trying to see what was the best combination of guys to make this quarterback room the best. I’ve said all along, I think he’s made great improvement based on a year ago. I really do feel like even though we’ve had some guys that didn’t get to compete a lot because of injury, I really do believe that everybody that we kept earned their spot.”

(On if there is a problem with the depth at tight end with Benjamin Watson missing time)- “No, as you know we kept fi ve running backs, three tight ends and six receivers. We’ll use our skill players in a way that makes sense for us. You can run the ball out of four wides and you can pass the ball out of two tight ends and a fullback. We’ll do what we have to do to match up the right way and get our right guys on the fi eld, and do what we can of course to score points and win games.”

(On Dimitri Patterson’s overall importance to the sec-ondary)– “Dimitri and Buster (Skrine) are both [important]. I see them the same. They challenge and they have speed and that allows them to play the slot as well as play outside when they’re running down the fi eld on you. I think it’s important. It’s really important.”

(On if he felt the team got used to Philadelphia’s speed in the preseason game)– “We saw how fast they were for sure. Some of our guys have learned something. Typically, you like to see improvement between the fi rst and second time you do anything.”

(On if he will use the fi lm from the preseason game to study Philadelphia)– “Yes, we watch everything that the Eagles do and the preseason is no exception.”

BROWNS PLAYER QUOTESBrandon Weeden:(On if he has progressed as he hoped)– “Absolutely, I did. I’m not where I need to be but I’m still making steps in the right direction. There’s just a comfort level. There’s a con-fi dence level/comfort level playing quarterback especially in this system, in this league. I think it takes some time. I wasn’t stressing out over what was going to happen. I was going to continue to learn. I think, moving forward in the right direction, I feel pretty good with where I’m at.”

(On chemistry with the receivers)– “Obviously, I think it takes time. You look at Josh Gordon. You look at him a month ago to where he’s at today. He doesn’t even look like the same two players. He’s fi nishing plays. He’s running full speed. He’s come a long way. He didn’t have OTAs to get a head start like all of us other guys. You got guys like that. You have Mo (Mohamed Massaquoi) and Greg (Little) and all these other guys. We get Ben (Watson) back at tight end. We have so many weapons at our disposal, but it just takes time. It takes reps. It takes confi dence. They have to have confi dence running the route most importantly, and I have to have confi dence pulling the trigger. I didn’t expect to come in day one, even day fi ve, and say, ‘Okay, we’re going to do this and it’s going to be perfect.’ It took some time.”

Josh Gordon:(On how he feels now compared to the beginning of the preseason)– “I’ve defi nitely come a long way since the fi rst preseason game building up until now. I’m expecting some good things. I’ve been working real hard. We’re ready for it. We got a good look at them (Philadelphia). We’ve been practicing and preparing for them, and we’re ready to see what happens.”

(On how far along he’s come personally)– “Defi nitely a long way. I know what I’m doing now and I’m feeling more confi dent out there. I’m in shape. I’m defi nitely working hard, so I can get out there and get at their DB’s and make some plays.”

(On what area he has improved the most)– “Really just getting an understanding of the playbook and the offense. I’m starting to dissect the defenses and reading coverages a lot better than what I used to. I didn’t really know it too well, how to adjust to it and what to do. Coach has helped me out with it and I’m getting on it pretty good.”

Jason Pinkston:(On the biggest thing he learned last season that he wants to use this season to be better)– “I could probably name a million things. I learned a lot - situations, being out there, going through it. Mainly just learning the offense, that’s the biggest thing I could learn.”

(On if he sees the offensive line being the strength of this team)– “Absolutely. It feels pretty good. I have pretty good chemistry with Joe (Thomas) and Alex (Mack) now. Last year I was just thrown in there. I was trying to learn how they block things and how they operate, and now I know, and it feels good. Mitchell (Schwartz), he jumped right in, and now we’re all gelling together.”

D’Qwell Jackson:(On his impressions of James-Michael Johnson through-out training camp)– “He’s a student of the game. Anytime you have a young kid who comes in, knows his role, wants to get better and always asks questions, it’s always a good sign to start off like that. He’s moving in the right direction.”

Dimitri Patterson:(On if he has an advantage facing Michael Vick after having practiced against him for two years)– “I know that he’s a good player and I know that he threatens the defense in so many ways. He is a good player, an all-around athlete and he just gives you problems and you have to be very dis-ciplined to be successful against him so we’ll prepare ac-cordingly and be ready to go on Sunday.”

(On how different it is facing Michael Vick compared to other quarterbacks)– “He extends plays very well and that’s an element of conditioning that you sometimes don’t know how you’re going to respond until you’re in it so he extends plays very well. That’s what he does, that’s one of his strengths and that’s something that we are going to have to have at the top of our mind going into this game this Sunday.”

Benjamin Watson:(On having such a young team but still wanting to win)- “Winning is very important. Whether you’re young, whether you’re old, it’s all about winning. It doesn’t matter if we have a young team or an old team, or you’re a young or old player, once we get out there on Sunday, it doesn’t matter how old you are. You have on the Browns uniform, whether you’re 22 or 32, it doesn’t matter. Our job is to go out there and make plays, and win the game.”

(On if he’s surprised that they almost half of the team is either a rookie or in their second season)- “It’s a tribute to them number one, that the coaches feel confi dent in them and confi dent in what they bring to the table and the fact that they can help our team win. The job of the coaches is always to put together a team that they feel gives them the best chance to win football games. Our coaches make deci-sions and they make moves that have the end in sight. The players out here are the players that our coaching staff felt would give us the best chance to win games.”

2012 POSITION-BY-POSITION SYNOPSIS(Returners include players who fi nished 2011 either on the 53-man roster or a reserve list)

Quarterback: Total – 3, Returners – 2 (Coach – Mark Whipple)Brandon Weeden, who threw for 9,260 yards and 75 touch-downs in his four-year college career at Oklahoma State, was a fi rst-round draft choice of the Browns this year (22nd overall). As a senior for the Cowboys, he fi nished second in the nation with 4,727 yards passing, while throwing 37 touchdowns. In three preseason starts, he completed 24 of 49 passes for 297 yards with 1 INT. He is slated to become the fi rst Browns rook-ie QB ever to start on opening day. Colt McCoy, a third-round draft choice in 2010, started 13 games last year. He completed 265 of 463 passes (57.2%) for 2,733 yards with 14 TDs, 11 INTs and a rating of 74.6. His interception percentage of 2.4% was the fi fth-lowest among AFC quarterbacks. He rushed for 212 yards on 61 attempts, marking the ninth time (5th QB) that a Browns quarterback has rushed for 200 or more yards in a season. In four preseason games this year, he connected on 20 of 29 passes for 250 yards with 1 TD, 1 INT and a rating of 92.6. Thaddeus Lewis, a fi rst-year player who showed fl ashes of promise over two preseasons with St. Louis (2010-11), was acquired via waivers on September 4 of last year. He did not see action on the year and was inactive for 13 contests.

Running Back: Total – 5, Returners – 4 (Coach – Gary Brown)The Browns traded up one spot in the 2012 draft to select Ala-bama’s Trent Richardson with the third overall pick. A 2011 Heisman Trophy fi nalist, Richardson set Crimson Tide single-season records last year with 1,679 yards rushing, 21 rushing touchdowns and 2,083 all-purpose yards. The winner of the 2011 Doak Walker award as the nation’s top running back, he compiled 3,130 career rushing yards at Alabama. Richardson missed the entire preseason after undergoing arthroscopic sur-gery on his left knee on August 9. Brandon Jackson spent all of 2011 on injured reserve with a toe injury. In 2010, he helped the Packers to the Super Bowl title by rushing for a team-high 703 yards and three touchdowns on 190 attempts. He appears to be fully back as he fi nished second on the team in the preseason this year with 135 yards rushing and a TD on 34 attempts. He also caught four passes for 26 yards. Chris Ogbonnaya was signed off Houston’s practice squad on October 19 of last year. He went on to play in 11 games with the Browns, including four starts. He was second on the squad with 334 rushing yards and a TD on 73 carries. He also totaled 23 receptions for 165 yards. His reception total tied for 6th on the team and led the club’s running backs. Montario Hardesty played in 10 games with four starts in 2011, his fi rst year back following ACL surgery. He fi nished third on the team with 266 yards rushing on 88 at-tempts. He also caught 14 passes for 122 yards. He was third on the team this preseason with 97 yards rushing and a TD on 30 attempts. Owen Marecic, a fourth-round draft choice of the Browns last year, saw a bulk of the action at fullback last year, where he started four games.

Wide Receivers: Total – 6, Returners – 5 (Coach – Mike Wilson)Greg Little, a second-round draft choice last year, moved into the starting lineup for a week 6 game at Oakland (10/16) and emerged as the team’s top receiver in 2011. On the year, he recorded a team-high 61 receptions for 709 yards and a touch-down. His reception total was second among NFL rookies, trailing only Cincinnati’s A.J. Green (65). His yardage fi gure was 3rd among AFC rookies and 5th among NFL rookies. His reception total was the second-highest ever by a Browns rookie while his yardage fi gure was 4th. Joshua Cribbs played in all 16 games with seven starts a year ago and came up with career-best 41 receptions for 518 yards and four TDs. He was 2nd on the club in both receptions and receiving yards. He tied for the team lead in touchdowns (4) and led the team in average per reception (12.6) among players with more than one recep-tion. Along with Evan Moore, he was the fi rst Brown to have at least four receiving TDs in a season since 2007 when Braylon Edwards (16) and Kellen Winslow (5) did it. Cribbs caught fi ve passes for 60 yards this preseason. Mohamed Massaquoi started 13 games a year ago and was fi fth on the team in re-ceptions with 31. Nineteen of his 31 catches went for a fi rst down. His 384 receiving yards were fourth-most on the team while his 12.4-yard average per catch was the highest on the team among Browns with more than one reception. Jordan Norwood showed some fl ashes towards the latter portion of the season as he caught 23 passes for 268 yards and a touch-down. He tied for the team lead this preseason with six recep-tions, totaling 65 yards. A pair of 2012 draft choices should also fi gure prominently into the Browns’ receiving plans for this season. Travis Benjamin, a fourth-round draft out of the University of Miami, possesses a plethora of speed. He totaled 131 receptions for 2,146 yards and 13 touchdowns in his col-legiate career. He averaged 16.7 yards on three receptions dur-ing the preseason. Josh Gordon was taken by the team in the second round of the Supplemental Draft. His collegiate career was limited, but in his most recent season – as a Baylor Bear in 2010 – he averaged a lofty 17.0-yard average per catch with 42 receptions for 714 yards. At 6-4, 225, Gordon possesses ex-ceptional physical attributes. He led the squad this preseason with 105 receiving yards on six receptions, a fi gure which tied for the team lead. His 17.5-yard average per catch was second among players with more than one reception.

Offensive Line: Total – 8, Returners – 6 (Coach – George Warhop)LT Joe Thomas, LG Jason Pinkston, C Alex Mack and RG Shawn Lauvao each started all 16 games in 2011. All except Lauvao took part in every offensive snap. Thomas has now started all 80 games in his career, and has been named to the AFC Pro Bowl squad in each of his fi ve seasons. Pinkston, a fi fth-round draft choice a year ago, was one of six NFL rookie linemen to start all 16 games last season. Mack, a fi rst-round draft choice in 2009, has opened each of the fi rst 48 games of his career. He earned a Pro Bowl nod following the 2010 sea-son. Oniel Cousins, claimed off waivers from Baltimore on

August 30 of last year, played in four games in 2011, starting one at right tackle. Mitchell Schwartz, a second-round draft choice this year, started 51 games in his four-year career at Cal, including 35 at left tackle and 16 on the right side. He started the fi rst three preseason games at right tackle and is scheduled to become the third Browns rookie offensive lineman to start on opening day since 2007, joining Thomas (LT, 2007) and Mack (C, 2009). Another rookie, Ryan Miller, was a sixth-round draft choice of the team this year. He set a school record at Colorado with 48 career starts, primarily at right guard. With the Browns he could also compete for time at tackle. John Greco, acquired in a trade with St. Louis during training camp last year, gives the Browns versatility, as he possesses the abil-ity to play tackle, guard and center, and is the team’s top backup at the inside positions.

Tight End: Total – 3, Returners – 3 (Coach – Steve Hagen)The tight end position, in which all three players return from 2011, combined for 91 receptions last year, tied for the seventh-highest fi gure in the NFL and the most by the Browns since 2007. Benjamin Watson started each of the fi rst 13 games last year and caught 37 passes for 410 yards and two touchdowns. He fi nished 3rd on the team in receptions and receiving yards. His two scores tied for 3rd on the squad. He spent the last three games of the year on injured reserve with a concussion. Alex Smith appeared in each of the fi rst 14 games of 2011, starting four, before being placed on injured reserve with a shoulder injury on December 20. He was used extensively as a blocker, and also caught 14 passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. As a rookie, Jordan Cameron, a fourth-round draft choice last year, played in eight games with two starts. He had six receptions for 33 yards. His one year of seasoning and work in the team’s off-season conditioning program could translate into more playing time in 2012. In the preseason, he led the team with a 21.0-yard average per reception on three catches.

Defensive Line: Total – 8, Returners – 3 (Coach – Dwaine Board)The defensive line was one of the most revamped units on the squad in 2011. Of the four starters in the group, two were rook-ies and a third had never suited up for the Browns in a regular season game. Currently, just three of the eight members of the unit were with the team last season Jabaal Sheard, a second-round draft choice in 2011, opened at end in all 16 games. He started the opener on the right side before moving to left end, where he has started the fi nal 15 contests. He registered 55 tackles, a team-high 8.5 sacks, a team-high fi ve forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and two passes defensed. His fi ve forced fumbles tied for 3rd in the NFL, along with St. Louis’ Quintin Mikell, trailing only Baltimore’s Terrell Suggs (7) and Detroit’s Cliff Avril (6). Sheard’s sack total tied for 12th in the AFC, was 2nd among AFC rookies (Denver LB Von Miller, 11.5) and was 3rd among NFL rookies (San Francisco LB Aldon Smith, 14). It led all NFL rookie linemen. Ahtyba Rubin and rookie Phil Taylor started inside for all 16 contests. Rubin led the

unit with 83 tackles, while he added fi ve sacks. His tackle total was 2nd on the team and 2nd among all NFL linemen, trailing only Giants’ DE Jason Pierre-Paul (86). His sack fi gure was 2nd on the team and 5th among AFC interior linemen. Taylor notched 59 tackles and four sacks. His tackle total was 7th on the club and led all NFL rookie linemen. His sack total was 2nd among NFL rookie interior linemen, trailing only Tennes-see’s Karl Klug (7). Taylor sustained a pectoral injury during the team’s offseason conditioning program this year and will begin 2012 on the Reserve/PUP list. Emmanuel Stephens, who was claimed off waivers from Atlanta prior to the 2011 regular season, earned a starting spot at right end in the middle of the season. He opened three games there and produced 15 tackles before a pectoral injury ended his season. The Browns signed a pair of unrestricted free agents this offseason in Fro-stee Rucker (Cincinnati) and Juqua Parker (Philadelphia). Rucker spent the fi rst six years of his career with the Bengals, during which time he amassed 147 tackles and seven sacks, in-cluding a career-high 4.0 in 2011. He is penciled in as the start-er at right end. Parker is a veteran of 11 NFL seasons, includ-ing the last seven with the Eagles. He has posted 36.5 career sacks, including 31.5 over the last six seasons. A pair of rook-ies should also see signifi cant time this year. John Hughes, a third-round draft choice, started 26 games at the University of Cincinnati and collected 141 career tackles and nine sacks. He started two preseason games this year and registered three stops. Billy Winn was a sixth-round selection who opened 41 games at Boise State, where he registered 131 tackles and 15.5 sacks. He also opened two preseason contests and collected six tackles. Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, who was in camp with Balti-more, was claimed off waivers following the cut to 53 players.

Linebackers: Total – 6, Returners – 2 (Coach – Bill Davis)The linebacker corps is the youngest group on the team as it currently consists of four newcomers, including three rookies and a fi rst-year player. D’Qwell Jackson (MLB) and Chris Gocong (WLB/SLB) both started all 16 regular season con-tests last year. Scott Fujita started 10 games at the strongside linebacker spot before spending the fi nal six contests on injured reserve with a hand injury. Jackson, who had missed the previ-ous 26 regular season contests (pectoral injuries), responded with a team-high 158 total tackles while tying for 4th on the team with a career-high 3.5 sacks. He added a team-high three fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, an interception and three passes defensed. His tackle total ranked 2nd in the NFL, while his three defensive fumble recoveries tied for 1st in the AFC and tied for 2nd in the NFL. He topped the team’s tackle chart in 13 contests, while registering double-digit tackle totals nine times. He was named AFC Defensive Player of the Month for September when he recorded 30 tackles, 2.5 sacks, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was selected as Comeback Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated while fi nishing second in the voting by the Associated Press. Gocong added 67 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and three passes defensed. His tackle total

ranked second on the squad. He started 10 games at the weak-side spot and six on the strong side, including the fi nal fi ve. Gocong sustained an Achilles injury in practice on August 4 and will miss the 2012 season after being placed on injured re-serve on August 27. Fujita tallied 51 stops, an interception and three pass breakups. He begins the season on the Reserve/Sus-pended by Commissioner list, where he is scheduled to spend the fi rst three games. Kaluka Maiava, a fourth-round draft choice in 2009, started six games at weakside linebacker during which time Fujita sat out because of injuries. Maiava recorded 24 tackles, including fi ve stops (2 for loss) in a week 15 game at Arizona (12/18). Rookie James-Michael Johnson (D4b) started the fi nal three preseason games this year and responded with nine tackles. Johnson totaled 299 tackles in his four-year career at Nevada, including 101 stops and 2.5 sacks as a senior. Rookie L.J. Fort, signed as an undrafted free agent, showed fl ashes of talent in the preseason as he played in all four games with two starts and recorded a team-high 16 tackles. Craig Robertson, a fi rst-year player who spent the fi nal two weeks of 2011 on the Browns’ practice squad, also took advantage of his playing time in the preseason as he amassed 13 stops, a fi gure that tied for third on the team. Tank Carder, a fi fth-round draft choice of the Bills this year, was claimed off waivers from Buffalo following the cut to 53 players. At TCU, he was a two-time Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year (2010, 2011) and was named the 2011 Rose Bowl MVP.

Defensive Backs: Total – 11, Returners – 8 (Coach – Tim Hauck)Sheldon Brown started all 16 contests at cornerback last year, extending his overall streak to 160 straight games played, the second-longest current streak among active NFL defensive backs, trailing only Tampa Bay’s Ronde Barber (224). He com-piled 48 stops, two interceptions, 13 passes defensed, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble. He was second on the team in both interceptions and passes defensed. Joe Haden opened 15 contests at the other cornerback spot in 2011, having missed one with a knee injury. He tallied 65 tackles and a team-high 19 passes defensed, fi ve of which came in the opener vs. Cincinna-ti (9/11). His 19 pass breakups were 4th in the AFC and 6th in the NFL. He also added a sack, a fumble recovery and a forced fumble on the season. T.J. Ward started each of the fi rst eight games at strong safety before missing a week 10 game vs. St. Louis (11/13) with a foot injury, one which forced him to sit out the following six games. He was placed on injured reserve on December 22. Prior to the injury, he recorded 38 stops, a sack, a forced fumble and three pass breakups. Usama Young opened eight games at strong safety last year in place of an injured Ward. Young, who has the ability to play both safety spots, registered 66 tackles and an interception. His tackle total was 4th on the team. Eric Hagg, a seventh-round draft choice last year, will open the season as the starter at free safety. He played in the fi nal 10 games of 2011 after missing all of the pre-season and the early part of the regular season with a knee inju-ry. He saw his playing time increase as the season went along,

and responded with 10 tackles, a pass defensed and a fumble recovery. Dimitri Patterson and 2011 rookie speedster Buster Skrine played in nickel and dime situations a year ago, but saw increased playing time as the season wore on. Patterson posted 26 stops and 12 pass breakups, including one in each of the fi rst three weeks. His season total was 3rd on the squad. Skrine notched 10 tackles, an interception and two passes defensed on the year. Three rookie defensive backs made the Browns’ 53-man roster after strong performances in the preseason. Cor-nerback Trevin Wade, a seventh-round draft choice this year, posted 11 tackles and a team-high four passes defensed this preseason. Undrafted free agents S Tashaun Gipson and CB Johnson Bademosi provide the unit with additional youth and athleticism. Gipson recorded a team-high 15 tackles in the pre-season, to go along with an interception. Bademosi produced eight stops. Ray Ventrone, a special teams ace, provides ad-ditional depth at safety.

Special Teams (Coach – Chris Tabor)Kicker Phil Dawson returns for his 14th NFL campaign in 2012. Last year he posted a team-high 92 points. He converted 24 of his 29 fi eld goal attempts and all 20 of his PATs. Of his 24 fi eld goals, seven came from 50 yards or longer, setting a new career-high in this category that he fi rst established in 2008 with three. In addition, the seven tied for the highest fi gure in the NFL last year (San Francisco’s David Akers, Oakland’s Sebastian Janikowski) and tied for the third-most in a season in NFL history. In the preseason, he converted seven of eight fi eld goals, including kicks of 52 and 53 yards. His only miss was from 56 yards away. Reggie Hodges returns to handle the punting chores in 2012 after missing all of last season with an Achilles injury. In 2010, he averaged 43.9 on 78 punts while posting a net of 39.0. He placed 29 punts inside the 20 with just fi ve touchbacks. Rookie Christian Yount was signed as the Browns’ long snapper on November 29 of last year and solidi-fi ed that position. The Browns ranked 2nd in the AFC and in the NFL in average drive start following kickoffs (24.5). Josh Cribbs fi nished 4th in the AFC and 12th in the NFL last year with a 25.0-yard average on 39 kickoff returns. He put together an 11.4-yard average on 34 punt returns. This included a career-long 84-yarder for a touchdown (at Baltimore, 12/24). His punt return average was 3rd in the AFC and 6th in the NFL. Cribbs also led the team with 14 special teams tackles, a fi gure that marked his most since 2008 when he was credited with 26. Jor-dan Norwood averaged 8.8 yards on four punt returns. Rookie Travis Benjamin, a fourth-round draft choice who possesses tremendous speed, could also fi gure into the mix as a returner after fi elding two kickoffs for a 27.5-yard average and one punt for 18 yards in the preseason. In 2011, Kaluka Maiava came up with 10 tackles on coverage units, while Buster Skrine, a fi fth-round draft choice in 2011, added nine stops. Skrine also fi elded three kickoffs for 24.0-yard average a year ago. Ray Ventrone, one of the Browns’ top special teamers since 2009, also returns this year. A pair of rookies also gave solid efforts on coverage units in the preseason. L.J. Fort produced a team-high fi ve tackles while Johnson Bademosi boasted three stops.
