Just the break you need

Kiama might only be an hour and a half south from the centre of Australia’s largest city, but it is a world away from the stresses and strains of modern life. The district has retained its country charm, with a network of villages offering their individual character and attractions, all within a short drive of each other.

Want to enjoy rolling countryside with views that can’t be beaten? Follow roads bounded by hand-built stone walls, over Saddleback Mountain to historic Jamberoo, the birthplace of the Australian dairy industry.

Keen to learn to surf? Seven Mile Beach, in the hamlet of Gerroa, offers a majestic (but safe) place to hone your skills.

Fascinated by history? Kiama’s role as an important economic settlement in the early colony has left a rich heritage of buildings and landscapes and a wealth of stories to investigate. Your own ancestors, wherever they are from, can be traced at the Family History Centre, with its treasure of resources.

Just need to relax by the beach? Gerringong is a quintessential beach town, with panoramic views of Werri Beach dominating the landscape. Whether you are sitting on your deck, having lunch or actually having a swim, you’ll feel you are ‘at the beach’ the whole time.

Looking for relaxed family fun, like you had as a child? Our wide open spaces, boat ramps, walks, tennis courts, play equipment and cycleways guarantee to keep you busy (and wear the kids out).

So come and recharge your batteries – the fresh air alone will do you a world of good.

Come on in, the water’s fine!

Imagine finding the beach of your dreams – clean water, good surf, golden sand, plenty of towel room, rock pools – and not have to fight to get a car park nearby. In fact, it is probably in walking distance of where you are staying. This is the everyday reality in Kiama’s string of coastal villages.

With nine beaches to choose from, you’ll be spoilt for choice. We have some of the best surfing beaches on the South Coast, which explains why we produce surfers such as Sally Fitzgibbons and Dean Bowen. From Mystics in the north to Seven Mile Beach in the south, there is always a wave somewhere. With a wetsuit, you can surf all year round.

Kendalls and Easts beaches, along with many idyllic rock pools, provide perfect places to swim or just take a dip, as they are usually protected from the big surf.

Join the locals as they fish, canoe, windsurf and do just about everything else connected with the water and you might get the amazing experience of surfing with a pod of dolphins, or having a whale pass by.

Enjoy nature’s show

From left clockwise: Kiama Lighthouse, The Blowhole, The Little Blowhole

Kiama’s distinctive rocky headlands are the result of lava flows from over 240 million years ago, when Australia was still attached to Antarctica.

The Kiama Blowhole, where the water pushes with great force through a fault in the rock, is one of Australia’s best known natural phenomena. It is a ‘must do’ for anyone visiting Kiama for the first time, with Blowhole Point also offering stunning views up and down the coast.

The best displays occur when the seas are running strongly from the south east. Word gets around, and even seasoned locals go up to see the spectacular rush of water and sound that has made the Blowhole famous since first noted by explorer, George Bass in 1797.

If the ‘big’ Blowhole isn’t running, there is a good chance that the Little Blowhole will be putting on a show during your visit.

Located just a few headlands south of Blowhole Point, on the Kiama Coast Walk, the smaller opening of the Little Blowhole means its plume is tall and straight. It relies on the prevailing north-east seas, so its displays are more frequent, even in calm seas.

KiamaWhile traditionally associated with the Kiama Blowhole, there is more to this historic town than this wonder of

nature. A vibrant town of just over 12,000 people, Kiama is small enough to offer a relaxed lifestyle, but big enough to have all the conveniences of a larger town.

Its history as a prosperous quarrying town and shipping port has shaped Kiama’s natural and urban landscape, leaving dramatic rock formations and many historic buildings which have found a modern use. For example the Historic Terrace, which was built for quarry workers and their families, now houses retail shops and eateries. Major landmark buildings, such as the Post Office, Court House and the Police Station, hotels, churches and and a bank still serve their original purpose. Lovely weatherboard homes add to the legacy.

JamberooDon’t be surprised when you’re driving to Jamberoo if you have

to stop for a few minutes whilst the dairy cows make their way down the road for their daily milking. Beautiful country lanes lead to this charming little village, where the rich history of dairying continues to this day.

Relax at the historic Jamberoo Pub, galleries and cafés or be more active by visiting Minnamurra Rainforest, the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk or Jamberoo Action Park, the largest water-based theme park in NSW.

Gerringong and GerroaHeading south from Kiama, the view from Mt Pleasant

showcases the beauty of Gerringong. The sweep of Werri Beach, much admired by the artist Lloyd Rees, dominates both the view and the psyche of the place. The main street, full of eateries and interesting shops, including the largest surf shop on the South Coast, follows a ridge line so you never lose your connection with the beach.

Nearby Gerroa’s outlook over Seven Mile Beach is arguably even more stunning. Whether you are enjoying the surf, the water or just the view, you’ll feel the cares of the world lifting off your shoulders.

Explore the heart of a rainforest or walk amongst the treetops, then be back at the beach for a quick swim before dinner.

Minnamurra Rainforest, a fifteen minute drive west of Kiama, at the base of the Illawarra Escarpment, is a rare remnant of subtropical and warm temperate rainforest. It shows how the landscape was before white settlement, when the cedargetters were the first to come through.

See lyrebirds, ancient fig trees, lush ferns and maybe even a water dragon. Most of all, feel the peace wash over you.

From there, a short drive to the top of the Escarpment, and the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk allows you to experience the rainforest from a different perspective. The suspended walkways and tower offer views up and down the coast, and a feeling of being up in the clouds.

Back on the coast, Spring Creek Reserve is the place to go to enjoy a bit of bird watching. It is one of the treasures of Kiama, well worth seeking out. Many types of birds make their homes at this fresh water wetland, and the Bird Hide provides all the cover you need to observe them secretly.

Kiama Coast Walk

Whatever your level of fitness, your visit to Kiama won’t be complete without you tackling at least some of the Kiama Coast Walk. Walk as far as you want, and take time out to enjoy yourself along the way with lunch, whale watching or a swim. This spectacular walking track hugs the coastline for over 20km, from Minnamurra in the north to Gerringong’s Werri Beach.

Destined to become recognised as one of the great Walks of the world, you can be one of the first to walk its length. Broken into three natural stages, the Walk is the best way to discover the natural beauty and history of the Kiama area, with the aid of interpretive signs.

With the local train line stopping at little railway stations at Gerringong, Kiama, Bombo and Minnamurra, you can plan your trip so you won’t have to loop back. Only the Gerringong station is a fair distance from the Walk. You can join in anywhere along the route, but it breaks naturally into these three sections.

Minnamurra to Blowhole Point This northern section stretches from the mouth of the Minnamurra River, a popular place for swimming and other water sports, to the Kiama Blowhole. It takes you past Jones Beach, Cathedral Rocks and Bombo Beach, and has must-do diversions to The Boneyard, the disused Bombo Quarry and Spring Creek Reserve.

Blowhole Point to Kiama Heights Except for one small part, this section of the Walk takes you through a series of waterfront reserves, and features three beach stretches and rocky headlands. Midway, the Little Blowhole is likely to offer you a great display as you look back to the Lighthouse.

Kiama Heights to Werri Beach This is where the Walk leaves civilization behind. It takes you along cliff tops, through former dairy pastures, with only you and the sea, and the occasional whale, for company. You’ll find it an unforgettable experience.

It is the memory of the simple things you do that will bring a smile in the future – getting up close to a pelican, exploring rock pools and platforms together, getting sprayed by the Blowhole, eating a bowlful of prawns caught by local fishermen that day, driving down country lanes or simply watching the big starlit sky.

Discover our region

Kiama is the ideal place to base yourselves as you explore the beautiful South Coast and the Southern Highlands.

Within an hour, you can easily be north at the Sea Cliff Bridge and Royal National Park, west at Bowral and south at Jervis Bay. Mind you, within this imaginary border, there are so many interesting places to stop and visit that you might not reach that far.

So relax and enjoy the truism that getting there is half the fun – be tempted by our regional wineries, stop and wander through a rainforest, enjoy our pristine beaches, learn something and, most of all, make memories to treasure.

Whatever your interests, you’ll find plenty to keep you entertained, and coming back for more.

There are maps at the back of this Guide to help you get around, or use the Grand Pacific Drive signs to help guide you. Kiama is a major attraction on the Grand Pacific Drive, which takes you from Sydney to Wollongong and beyond.

Heading northBEACHES, PLANES AND TRAINS

Starting from Kiama township, drive west along the length of Terralong Street to join the Princes Highway.

Twitchers will find the first stop of interest is Spring Creek Reserve, a significant wetland haven for birds.

Surfers in the car will want to stop at Bombo, accessed by either of the turnoffs under or over the Highway, or Jones Beach, which is well signposted from the Kiama Downs overpass. The carpark at the southern end of Jones Beach is the ideal place to wander down from to explore the majestic Cathedral Rocks. Or you can follow the road south parallel to the water to view Cathedral Rocks and the Boneyard from your car.

Heading north along Jones Beach again you’ll soon find the shady Kiama Golf Club and the popular estuary of the Minnamurra River (great swimming and fishing). This is the northern most point of the Kiama Coast Walk. From nearby Riverside Drive, you can get back on the Highway to continue north.

The Shellharbour turnoff will take you to Shellharbour Village, a collection of cafés and shops on the waterfront, Bass Point Marine Reserve and Killalea State Park. At Albion Park, the airfield is home to an historic aircraft museum (featuring a fully-operational Catalina) and a light railway museum nearby.

Soon after this, the highway becomes a freeway, sweeping you up to Wollongong and Sydney. Take the lanes up to Bulli if you want to head to the northern beaches and the Seacliff Bridge.

Heading southWINE, SHOPS AND HISTORY

From Gerringong, there is a lovely round trip to suit all interests. Travel south down the main street and you’ll soon be in open countryside and passing the Gerringong Golf Course. Pull into the Kingsford Smith Lookout, at the northern end of Seven Mile Beach – the view is simply too stunning to drive past.

From this beach, pioneer aviator Kingsford Smith set out to make the first commercial flight across the Tasman. Now the beach is a mecca for surfers and windsurfers. Gerroa, on the northern side of Crooked River, is worth exploring before you continue south. Rather than taking the first turnoff to Berry, continue on along the avenue of native trees until you get to the vineyards.

You can turn off to the left to explore Shoalhaven Heads, or pull into the right and visit Coolangatta Estate, the region’s most awarded winery. Set in the historic buildings of the area’s founding family, the Estate combines history with innovation.

From here, you can drive south along the Shoalhaven River to Nowra (about 15 minutes) and on to Jervis Bay, or head back north a short way and take Beach Rd to Berry to wander through the shops and admire the gardens.

Head back to Gerringong a different way, along a scenic stretch of the Princes Highway as it winds its way through hills and farmland. You might like to stop for a horse ride or to sample some more wine on the way back.

Heading westWATERFALLS, VIEWS AND CRICKET

From Jamberoo, you have the opportunity to head for the hills. Jamberoo Mountain Road first offers you a chance to visit the Minnamurra Rainforest, featuring Minnamurra Falls, before winding its way up the Illawarra Escarpment. Half way up, you may wish to call in at the Benedictine Monastery, which is home to a contemplative order of nuns. The candles they make to fund their work are highly sought after because of the purity of the beeswax they collect.

At the top of the Escarpment, you can choose to go to Barren Grounds Nature Reserve or continue on to the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk (don’t miss the Jamberoo Lookout along the way). Just past the turnoff to the Fly is the turnoff to Carrington Falls, where the Kangaroo River falls spectacularly into its valley.

Back on the main road, keep travelling to historic Robertson, once the potato capital of Australia and backdrop for the movie ‘Babe’. From here you can either travel on to the Southern Highlands (signs to Bowral, Moss Vale or Mittagong) to enjoy wineries, shopping, antique hunting and the new International Cricket Hall of Fame, or opt to enjoy the spectacular beauty of Fitzroy Falls and Kangaroo Valley.

This latter route can be followed through to Berry before leading back to Kiama.

Feast on local produce

From top: Fresh seafood at Kiama Fisheries, Fresh local produce from the Farm Gate Trail

No visitor to Kiama could fail to notice the lush pastures and contented cows that have been such a feature of our district since early settlement. In fact Jamberoo is known as the home of the Australian dairy industry, and the famous Illawarra breed of dairy cattle.

While justly proud of this history, many are more excited about the future of this fertile area as a diversified, sustainable food region.

Kiama is the first country town on the NSW South Coast, and the gateway to the South Coast Harvest Experience. This Farm Gate Trail, developed under the umbrella of the Hawkesbury Harvest, assists farmers and other local food producers to get their produce directly to you, bypassing the middlemen.

In the Kiama district, the Farm Gate Trail will take you to the source of local wine, tea, cheese, vegetables, seafood and preserves. Travel further south to Berry and Kangaroo Valley to sample what the Shoalhaven has to offer.

You set the pace

Whether you are looking to laze on the beach, build a new skill or want an adrenalin rush, Kiama is the place for you.

We have two of the biggest tourist attractions in NSW, the Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk and Jamberoo Action Park. Both bring visitors from around Australia and overseas, but for completely different reasons. The Fly allows you a birds’ eye view from the Escarpment, and the opportunity to commune with nature in the tree tops. The Action Park is the perfect place to wear you, or your children, out through an overdose of adrenalin. Its water rides, set into the beautiful hills around Jamberoo, make for an unforgettable day of action.

As part of its Healthy Cities commitment, in addition to the Kiama Coast Walk, Kiama has a rich network of walking and cycleways for you to enjoy. While some of our hills will test your fitness levels, there are plenty of level routes from which to choose. Or if you have always wanted to learn to surf, then this is the place to do it, under the gaze of experienced teachers.

For the more sedate times, there are wineries to visit, lunches to enjoy and cultural centres to learn from.

Being able to choose from a mix of these things, as the whim takes you, makes for a holiday to remember.

Kiama Seaside Markets

Be part of our communityOur strong sense of community means there is always

something going on. Whether it is an old fashioned school fete, church rummage sale, art exhibition, or movies playing in the Town Hall, you’ll enjoy the village feel and relaxed opportunity to mix with the locals.

Groups of enthusiasts organise major annual events to a very high standard. For example, the Kiama Rugby Sevens is the largest one day Sevens’ competition in the world, the Kiama Agricultural Show, now in its 163rd year, is an important equestrian qualifying event for the Sydney Easter Show, the Kiama Regional Wine Show attracts internationally recognised judges, and the Kiama Jazz & Blues Festival has been entertaining us for over twenty years.

Monthly markets are held in Kiama, Gerringong and Jamberoo, providing an opportunity to buy local produce, craft and curios.

Meals to remember

An amazing amount of holiday time is taken up not just with eating, but with planning your next meal (often before you have finished the current one).

Whether you are after a sophisticated meal in refined surroundings, casual bistro dining or fish and chips, there is a choice to suit your taste and budget.

Alfresco dining is offered at most venues, given our climate and holiday atmosphere.

Whether you are travelling down the South Coast or looking for a great place to base yourself on your holiday, you’ll be able to find something to suit your needs in the Kiama area. There are a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury boutique hotels and bed & breakfasts to holiday houses and motels.

Kiama’s reputation as a paradise for holiday makers began when local families, the Kendalls and the Easts, opened up their beachfront dairy farms to caravaners and campers. The parks are still there as a living reminder of simpler times, although now they boast cabins and other modern conveniences.

Over Christmas and Easter, tent cities still spring up on Council ovals by Surf and Kendalls Beaches, as people relive their childhood holidays.

www.kiama.com.au is the easiest way for you to see what is available and book your accommodation.
