Term 1 ‘Learning for the Future ‘ 10th February 2016

Kia ora koutou, Greetings to you all!I am so excited to be the new Principal of Kamo Primary!! I certainly now know the words from Mr Ward are true, as he would say at Principal meetings “Kamo Primary is a great school!” Every one has been highly supportive and friendly; and to that I impress a very big thank you!! I know I made a great decision to be at this school! School has started well and teachers are planned, organised and energized for a great 2016. This year we are changing newsletters to fortnightly, however should any information be required to get to you, we will not hesitate to communicate. As you are aware we have Facebook, School Website and our School App as methods of communication. In urgent cases a printed newsletter will come home so everyone is informed.

how learn and making the link to home. Working together for 2016!

Term 2 School Reports How your child is progressing to date.Term 3 Three-way conferences Teacher, student and whanau/family will determine how to

enhance learning further.Term 4 School Reports Lets celebrate learning and develop thinking around

building on learning for the new year.

The Term 1 Whanau-School meeting will be Wednesday17th February. The following times allow you to access all teachers.

• Kowhai Classes 13, 15, 16, 17, 18 & 19 will be 5.30 – 6.00pm• Rimu Classes 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 will be 6.15 until 6.45pm• Kauri Classes 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, will be 7.00pm to 7.30pm

Getting to know a little about me - HomeworkI wish to convey recent studies continue to show that the best form of homework is reading, word work, posing maths questions small amounts of writing all from authentic contexts – that is from the living your child is currently involved in. All combined with a good dose of play! Waikato University Professor Terry Locke advocates, “No more than 20 minutes or it then becomes a waste of time. Children learn “by being kids”. Homework needs to be personalised for the individual so that learning can be built on. If your child has been out playing then ask those relevant questions:

• What did you play?• Who played?• How long did you play for? • Were there any rules?• What was good about what you played?• Would you change anything about your game?

If your child enjoys reading then just let them go, however if they don’t sharing the load of reading makes it feel so much better for your child and growth will be made. Take turns with reading pages and even break it down further to paragraphs, 10 minutes for a reluctant reader will lead to great gains. If there is a real reluctance then build up 3 minutes of reading for a week, 4 minutes the next week and so on. Look around a room at home and take turns naming objects eg; stool, table, dresser, ornament etc aim to locate 10 or 20 words then go back and add an adjective to describe eg; shiny stool, black table, wooden dresser, precious ornament. This word work will build quicker recall in class for writing making it easier to be a writer in class. It the experience is not positive then it will not be effective.

Term 1We will now settle into the term after the luxury of two long weekends and will work steadily till Easter with Good Friday being 25th March, Easter Monday 28th March, Easter Tuesday 29th March. We then carry on till Friday 15th April, which completes term1.

Please share your ideas, thoughts or concerns with me so that I can continue to build on to the great school Kamo is!

SunhatsAll children are required to wear a hat at school when outside. No children will be allowed to play in the grounds unless they have a hat. Hats are compulsory Terms 1 & 4.

SwimmingDuring the swimming season each child swims regularly and requires named togs and towel, kept in a bag. A note is required whenever a child is not swimming. The reason for non-participation should be medical only. Each teacher carefully considers the conditions each day. Children are free to leave the pool if they are cold. Children with open sores and head lice are not permitted to swim. It is important that all children with ear problems use the appropriate preventive measures when swimming and their class teacher is informed by the parent. It is a good idea, particularly for the younger children, to wear clothing that they can manage without requiring assistance when changing.

Staff Car ParkPlease do not use the staff car park to pick up or drop off children. This area is limited in size and simply cannot accommodate this every morning and afternoon.

Road SafetyPlease do not cross the road on the Clark Rd/Bush Rd corner. This is a very dangerous corner and many children would not be able to negotiate this area alone.

As the school is situated on two very busy roads, it is essential that care is taken by children crossing when coming to and from school. Two children provide crossing management under the control of a duty teacher on the Bush Road crossing. This is manned between 8.30-8.55am and from 3.00-3.15pm approximately. All children should observe the rules and parents should likewise set a good example by observing the rules also.

The Clark Road crossing is only patrolled after school. Parents in cars waiting to collect children on Clark Road are reminded of the need to observe the yellow lines prohibiting parking on sections of the school side footpath. Cars parked illegally are reported to the police.

School Rules: GuidelinesThese rules are based on children learning how to take responsibility for their own actions and understanding that whatever course of action they choose, they also choose the consequences that go with it.•Behaviour Care for others and help other children Use manners when meeting, introducing, welcoming, farewelling others Wait courteously for your turn Listen carefully to instructions Look after our property•Out of Bounds The following areas are out of bounds for play -carpark -native reserve•Trees Children are to be encouraged to look after the many trees on the grounds. •Playground Occasionally balls are kicked or hit over the school boundary. One child should seek permission of the duty teacher before retrieving the ball.

No pupil is permitted to leave the grounds at any time unless given specific permission by a teacher. Everyone should be outside on fine days. Children may go inside for toileting or to return lunch boxes etc to bags. On wet days when children can go outside, areas unsuitable for playing will be marked with a flag. When a child behaves unacceptably they will be temporarily removed from the playground. No collectible cards are allowed at school at any time
